Treatment for progressive hemifacial atrophy: paradigm shift from 2D photograph to 3D stereophotogrammetry.
  • Aug 1, 2026
  • Journal of cranio-maxillo-facial surgery : official publication of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery
  • Xiaoshuang Guo + 6 more

Progressive hemifacial atrophy is a rare craniofacial disease that commonly involves withered skin, soft tissue, cartilage, or bone on one side of the face. The author proposed a therapeutic algorithm tailored to PHA's severity, which revealed a paradigm shift from subjective evaluation on 2D photographs to more objective assessment using 3D stereophotogrammetry. This retrospective observational study comprised all patients diagnosed with PHA between February 2000 and August 2025. Patients were categorized into three tiers according to deficits in soft tissue, facial skeletal contour, and occlusal function. Photographs, three-dimensional laser scanning, and computed tomography were obtained if needed to evaluate facial asymmetry, the defective area, and depth. 186 patients were treated. Thirty - three patients (17.7%) had concurrent linear scleroderma (mainly en coup de sabre). 59.7% underwent sequential autologous fat grafting as the primary therapeutic method. 29.6% underwent adipofascial tissue transplantation combined with subsequent procedures, including graft debulking or lipofilling. 10.8% had bony and soft tissue reconstruction approaches. The complication rate (3.8%) was acceptable with rational treatment. Treating PHA is a challenge, and 3D stereophotogrammetry is a useful adjunct for formulating therapeutic modalities. The authors shared their personal experiences and proposed a therapeutic algorithm. Although there is no "perfect" strategy, hopefully, this algorithm will enrich the current body of literature and inspire further thoughts.

Regional disturbance predisposition assessment to support management in Norway spruce-dominated mountain forests
  • Jul 1, 2026

  • Leon J Bührle + 12 more

Mountain forests provide essential ecosystem services, including protection against natural hazards. However, climate change and the predominance of structurally homogeneous Norway spruce stands increase their predisposition to disturbances such as windthrow, bark beetle infestation, and snow breakage. Given limited resources for proactive and reactive forest management, prioritizing silvicultural interventions is crucial. We present a framework for the spatially explicit assessment of forest predisposition to snow breakage, windthrow, and bark beetle infestation at 10 m resolution across regional scales. The approach integrates high-resolution forest structural and site factor attributes primarily derived from nationally available airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. These attributes are weighted using an expert-based model according to their influence on disturbance predisposition. Weighted values are aggregated and classified into four predisposition classes, from low (< 50th) to extreme (> 95th percentile). Validation of local foresters at 142 reference sites showed significant correlations between forester-rated and modeled predisposition for windthrow and bark beetle, but not for snow breakage. New bark beetle infestations were strongly associated with increasing predisposition classes. Forest structural parameters such as forest mixture and spruce share, development stage, and canopy layering were key predictors and could be determined with high accuracy, enabling detailed and accurate predisposition mapping even in steep terrain. Assessing predisposition to snow breakage remains challenging due to the high stochastic variability in the location, characteristics, and amount of snow fall. As the main predictors are derived from nationwide ALS data, the methodology is transferable to other mountain regions. Developed in close collaboration with practitioners, the framework supports operational forest management by improving prioritization of interventions. • Framework for spatially explicit predisposition mapping in mountain forests. • Use of detailed forest structure parameters based on nationwide airborne laser scanning. • High correlation between predisposition mapping and on-site forester assessment. • Increase of detected bark beetle nests with increasing predisposition class. • Support of spatial prioritization of forest management interventions.

This study investigated the potential of Cucurbita moschata and Cucurbita maxima as functional ingredients in cookie formulations. Pumpkin powders were incorporated as partial wheat flour substitutes to evaluate their effects on the physicochemical, nutritional profile, and functional properties of cookies. The results showed that pumpkin incorporation improved moisture retention and water absorption capacity, contributing to enhanced technological performance of the dough and baked products. Nutritional analysis revealed significant increases in protein, dietary fiber, fat, ash, and carotenoid contents in enriched cookies compared with the control formulation.Texture profile analysis demonstrated variety-dependent effects. Cookies enriched with C. moschata showed increased hardness at lower substitution levels but a softening effect at higher concentrations, whereas C. maxima maintained relatively stable firmness across formulations. Thermal analysis indicated improved thermal stability in enriched cookies, while mineral analysis confirmed better retention of essential elements. Confocal laser scanning microscopy further revealed a more homogeneous ingredient distribution and stronger matrix integration in cookies containing C. maxima powder.Furthermore, the incorporation of pumpkin powders significantly enhanced the bioactive profile of cookies, as reflected by higher total polyphenol content and increased DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity. These results highlight the potential of pumpkin powders as valuable functional ingredients for improving both the nutritional quality and functional properties of bakery products. The study supports the development of nutritionally enriched cookies with enhanced health benefits and technological performance.
