The mediating role of green knowledge sharing on the relationship between green transformational leadership and green innovation

Purpose This study aims to examine the mediating role of green knowledge sharing on the relationship between green transformational leadership (GTL) and green innovation. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research design was adopted, with data collected from small to medium enterprises (SME) respondents. The hypothesised relationships were tested using partial least squares-structural equation modelling, which enabled the simultaneous assessment of measurement and structural models, as well as mediation effects. Findings The results of this study indicated that GTL has a significant positive effect on green innovation and green knowledge sharing. Green knowledge sharing also significantly influenced green innovation and partially mediated the relationship between GTL and green innovation. These findings suggest that leadership influences environmental innovation both directly and indirectly through knowledge-based processes. Practical implications The findings of this study highlight the need for organisations to develop leadership capabilities that foster not only environmental commitment but also knowledge-sharing cultures that enable innovation. Originality/value By integrating the Natural Resource-Based View and the Knowledge-Based View, this study provides a process-oriented explanation of how leadership capabilities are translated into environmental innovation outcomes. The findings revealed that green knowledge sharing is a critical mechanism linking GTL and green innovation, thereby addressing the “black box” in prior research. This study also contributes empirical evidence from Zimbabwean manufacturing SMEs, a context that remains underexplored in sustainability research. Overall, this study advances understanding of green innovation as a knowledge-driven organisational capability.

In the context of global digital transformation, open science, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), cyberspace has emerged as both a catalyst for knowledge innovation and a breeding ground for digital social threats, including misinformation, cyberbullying, online fraud, data privacy violations, and other forms of online social deviance. These challenges have imposed increasing responsibilities on higher education institutions, particularly private universities, to reposition their roles in fostering safe, ethical, and sustainable digital academic ecosystems. This study examines the strategic role of private universities in combating cyber-social deviance through interdisciplinary approaches encompassing digital university governance, open science, digital citizenship education, and knowledge security. The research employs a qualitative methodology integrating policy analysis, international literature review, and comparative approaches to explore governance models, educational mechanisms, and adaptive capacities of private higher education institutions in the era of global digital transformation. The findings indicate that private universities possess significant potential to act as pioneering institutions in promoting digital ethics, strengthening cyber-risk awareness, advancing safe academic cultures, and cultivating responsible digital learning environments. Furthermore, the study proposes an integrated governance framework that combines AI, open science, and digital citizenship education to enhance the effectiveness of cyber-social threat prevention in higher education. The study contributes theoretically and practically by extending scholarly discourse on digital universities, digital social security, and the social responsibility of higher education institutions within the global knowledge society.

Innovation capability characteristics among nursing undergraduates: a latent profile analysis.

Innovation capability is a core competency for nursing college students to adapt to the development of modern nursing and meet clinical demands. This study applied innovation ecosystem theory and aimed to identify the latent profile types of nursing college students' innovation capability and their associated factors, to provide a basis for formulating targeted training strategies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,086 nursing college students using a self-designed "Questionnaire on Innovation Capability of Nursing College Students" with good reliability and validity. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to classify the innovation capability types. The innovation capability of nursing college students was divided into four latent profile types: Low Innovation Capability Type (22.65%), Low-Medium Innovation Capability Type (32.97%), Medium-High Innovation Capability Type (29.93%) and High Innovation Capability Type (14.46%), showing a distribution characteristic of "larger in the middle and smaller at both ends". Multiple linear regression analysis showed that weekly self-directed learning time for innovation knowledge (β'=0.298), number of innovation competition participations (β'=0.234), clinical internship experience (β'=0.189) and age (analyzed as a continuous variable, β'=0.123) were significant positive predictors of innovation capability (all P < 0.001). The total score of innovation capability of nursing college students was 67.64 ± 8.36, with the lowest average score in the Innovation Environment dimension (2.58 ± 0.52) and the highest in the Innovation Motivation dimension (2.92 ± 0.50). Nursing college students' innovation capability presents obvious heterogeneous characteristics with four distinct profile types. Weekly self-directed learning time for innovation knowledge, participation in innovation competitions, clinical internship experience and age were identified as key factors associated with higher innovation capability. These findings suggest that targeted training strategies such as differentiated cultivation, strengthening clinical innovation training, improving self-directed learning ability and optimizing innovation incentive mechanisms may help enhance nursing college students' innovation capability. Longitudinal and interventional studies are warranted to confirm these effects.

The growing concentration of national influence in global science.

Scientific influence, or the capacity of ideas and concepts to shape future research, is crucial to developing and disseminating knowledge and sustained innovation. Here, using nearly 240 million scientific works published between 1990 and 2023 from OpenAlex to construct international networks of influence, discursive influence, which represents what global scientific communities consider important and worthy of investigation, is shown to be disproportionately and increasingly concentrated in a small group of resource-wealthy countries, including the United States, Canada, Western Europe and East Asia, in comparison to attributional influence. This concentration raises issues of equity and innovation in global scientific discourse, perhaps narrowing research perspectives, exacerbating biases and creating echo chambers that are associated with stifling innovation and marginalizing contributions from countries that are peripheral to global scientific discourse. The findings underscore the need to promote diverse and inclusive global research enterprises.

Impact of perceived organizational support on green innovative behavior in small and medium-sized enterprises

The research focuses on the role of perceived organizational support in workers’ green innovative behavior in Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and explains the roles of green self-efficacy and green transformational leadership in this behavior. The article contributes to the green innovation literature by focusing on SMEs, an area under-researched despite their growing significance for sustainable development. Data were collected from 394 employees working in Chinese SMEs using a structured survey, with participants selected using purposive sampling. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships, and importance-performance analysis was conducted to provide additional managerial information. The results reveal that perceived organizational support directly facilitates green innovative behavior and enhances the self-efficacy of employees to be green. Green self-efficacy, in turn, significantly promotes green innovative behavior and partially mediates the influence of perceived organizational support. Besides, green transformational leadership supports the beneficial impact of green self-efficacy on green innovative behavior. These findings demonstrate that green innovation in the workplace is fostered when supportive organizations, confident employees, and environmentally oriented leaders collaborate to advance it. The research expands knowledge of employee-based green innovation among SMEs and provides managerial advice on enhancing sustainable innovation through supportive practices and leadership development.

Bridging the Digital Gap: Factors Influencing Digital Economy Adoption in Small Enterprises

The digital economy has emerged as an important driver of enterprise growth, productivity, and innovation across various industries in recent years. Nonetheless, the implementation of a digital economy presents numerous challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in states such as Kelantan with low gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Additionally, the presence of web technology is among the lowest in Kelantan compared with other states in Peninsular Malaysia, especially in the small- and medium-sized enterprise sector. This paper examines the key determinants affecting the adoption of the digital economy by small enterprises in Kelantan. As digital technologies persist in transforming economic activities, comprehending the factors that facilitate or impede their adoption is crucial for maintaining small business competitiveness. A quantitative approach was utilized, and structured questionnaires were administered to small business proprietors across diverse industries in Kelantan. Data analysis was performed utilizing SPSS (version 29.0.2.0) and SmartPLS4 (version 4.1.1.4). This research, led by the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, identified and studied the technological, organizational, and environmental aspects influencing adoption decisions. The findings indicate that organizational and environmental factors, including innovation culture, employee skills and knowledge, market competition pressures, government restrictions, and financial support from the government, greatly affect adoption levels. These findings provide important insights for policymakers, technology providers, and support agencies to formulate policies that might effectively advance digital transformation among small enterprises across the nation.

Cocreating service innovations in European public libraries

ABSTRACT This study uses survey data for 543 European libraries to investigate the effect of co-creation and other factors on the usefulness of knowledge for innovation obtained from four groups: library users, non-management staff, non-profits and businesses. The study finds that 24.3% of libraries develop a ‘high priority’ innovation through co-creation with library users. Co-creation has a substantial positive effect on the usefulness of knowledge obtained from all four groups. The knowledge of non-managerial library staff on user needs can partly substitute for user engagement. The results support the importance of drawing on multiple knowledge sources within a library innovation ecosystem.

We Rise or Fall Together: Internal Knowledge, Collaboration and Employee Innovation in Public Sector Organizations

Collaboration is a leading driver of innovation in both public and private sector organizations. However, while the influence of inter-organizational collaboration has been well established, the impact of intra-organizational collaboration on employee innovation has remained underexplored in public management studies. Therefore, drawing on social exchange theory, this research examines how internal knowledge and collaboration influence the innovative work behavior of public sector workers. Using data from a large survey of employees in Australia’s public service (n = 121,590), we found significant evidence of a positive relationship between the knowledge/skills of public employees and their innovative work behavior. Furthermore, collaboration within workgroups was also associated with an increase in innovative work behavior. Finally, our results show a close, complementary, and positive relationship between knowledge and collaboration, implying that collaborative teams are also more knowledgeable and that knowledge mediates the influence of collaboration on innovative work behavior.

The influence of digital transformation on enterprise innovation capability: the intermediary functions of knowledge absorption and R&D cooperation

ABSTRACT Digitalisation is reshaping the operational landscape for enterprises, offering new avenues for innovation while simultaneously imposing strategic demands on how firms manage knowledge and collaboration. As digital transformation becomes increasingly central to competitiveness in emerging economies, understanding its nuanced influence on innovation capability – particularly through internal learning processes and external partnerships – is both timely and necessary. Drawing on knowledge management and innovation network theories, this study examines how and under what conditions digital transformation enhances firms’ innovation capability. Using longitudinal survey data from 285 technology innovation enterprises in Guangdong, China, the analysis reveals that digital transformation does not directly boost innovation capability in isolation; rather, its effects are fully mediated by absorptive capacity and R&D cooperation. Furthermore, the size and diversity of a firm’s innovation network serve as important boundary conditions, strengthening the positive effects of knowledge absorption and collaborative R&D on innovation outcomes. These findings offer theoretically grounded and context-sensitive insights for enterprise managers and policymakers seeking to harness digital transformation for sustained innovation in digitally evolving environments.

The role of knowledge integration capability, reconfiguring capability, and innovation orientation in sustainable performance

Purpose This study aims to build upon dynamic capabilities (DC) and triple bottom line (TBL) theories and investigates the influence of knowledge integration capability (KIC), reconfiguring capability (RC) and innovation orientation (IO) on sustainable performance (SP), and the impact of IO on KIC and RC. Design/methodology/approach This study uses structural equation modeling-partial least squares methodology on a sample of 156 employees of Egyptian small and medium-sized enterprises that operate in the food manufacturing industry. Findings The findings indicate significant positive effects of KIC, RC and IO on SP, which is consistent with DC theory principles. Furthermore, the statistical analysis emphasizes the significant impact of IO on KIC and RC. Originality/value First, this study reconceptualizes KIC, IO and RC within the sensing, seizing and transforming framework proposed by David Teece and colleagues (1997), offering a more granular operationalization of DC. Second, it reveals the central role of IO and its synergistic interaction with KIC and RC in driving SP. Third, the study advances the DC literature by positioning these capabilities as integrated antecedents of SP rather than examining them in isolation. Finally, it provides robust empirical evidence from an underexplored context, strengthening the explanatory power of DC theory in enhancing firms’ competitive positioning and sustainability outcomes.

School Leaders Igniting the Fire of Desire Amid External Accountability Pressures: From Passion to Innovation

ABSTRACT In the context of increasing external accountability pressures within educational systems, this study examines the role of harmonious innovation passion as a critical motivational factor influencing school leaders’ innovative behaviours, innovative knowledge sharing, and innovative self-efficacy. Drawing upon a sample of 555 school leaders from diverse educational institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong, this research employs quantitative methodologies to elucidate the relationships between harmonious innovation passion and key leadership outcomes (e.g. innovative behaviours, innovative knowledge sharing, and innovative self-efficacy). The findings indicate that harmonious innovation passion significantly enhances both innovative behaviours and knowledge sharing, among school leaders, as well as bolstering their confidence in executing innovative initiatives. Moreover, the study also identifies the moderating effect of external accountability pressures, which complicate the dynamics of knowledge sharing; while passion generally fosters collaboration, heightened accountability pressures can inhibit open exchanges of innovative practices.

Assessing the Role of Knowledge Management and Innovation in Indonesian Tuna Fishery Performance

The Indonesian fishery industry, a major part of the economy of the country, needs to raise its abilities in knowledge absorption, human intelligence, and innovation. In a study conducted in Bali, Indonesia, this article attempts to clarify the impact of absorptive capability, intellectual capital, and innovation on the performance of tuna fishery companies. This research uses a descriptive quantitative method. Data was acquired through a survey of 85 tuna fishery companies in Bali, Indonesia. This study employed the partial least squares (PLS) method with the aid of SmartPLS 3. The results of our data indicate that absorptive capacity doesn't significantly affect a company's performance since absorptive capacities in fact are ordinary capabilities, while intellectual capital and innovation represent extraordinary capabilities and bring good influences to a company. Therefore, this study proposes that the tuna fishery enterprises in Bali should strengthen absorbing power, develop intellectual capital, and use innovation as a leverage point for competitive advantage.

Research on digital economy Promoting the Construction of innovation ecosystem in Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle in the era of artificial intelligence

In order to explore how the digital economy reshaped the innovation ecosystem of Shuangcheng Economic Circle in Chengdu-Chongqing region, this paper proposed an artificial intelligent-driven construction framework that integrated multi-source innovation factor clustering, spatio-temporal graph neural network and dynamic feedback update. Firstly, the framework divided enterprises, research institutions, platforms, funds and policy resources into collaborative units from heterogeneous regional data. Then, cross-regional knowledge flows, industrial linkages, and innovation interactions are modeled through spatio-temporal graph representations to infer ecosystem association strength. The feedback update module is further introduced to correct the structural bias and stabilize the evolution estimation. Experiments were carried out on 42,318 records collected from 38 districts and counties. The results show that the proposed model achieves 93.4% construction accuracy and 91.7% collaborative recall rate, and the overall performance is stable better than that of comparison methods and similar models. The verification results provide a computable analysis basis for the regional innovation governance, resource allocation and smart policy adjustment of the twin-city innovation network under the background of digital transformation.

Brain drain refers to the selective emigration of highly educated people, who often have stronger incentives to migrate and face fewer barriers. At first glance, this seems to be an adverse situation: losing doctors, engineers or teachers could hinder development. However, migration can also be beneficial by spurring investment in skills, fueling remittances, fostering innovation, business links, and transfers of knowledge and norms. The net impact depends on the skills involved and the context, creating an opportunity for policies that transform emigration into a driver of development.

From innovation to sustainable transformation: a multidimensional approach

Purpose In this study, we analyse the multidimensional drivers of innovation in Polish bioeconomy enterprises and how internal-external interactions enable sustainable transformation. We test a model combining technological know-how, key enabling technologies, innovation potential, process innovation and the resulting innovation in traditional and specialised markets. Design/methodology/approach The project used a mixed-method approach, combining an entrepreneurial discovery process, interviews with experts and a survey of 252 companies in the LifeScience cluster. Measures were assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Comparisons of market types were made using Bayesian structural equation modelling. Common methodological variance was assessed using latent factor tests and univariate tests. Findings In specialised markets, technological know-how is positively related to innovation potential, which in turn strengthens process innovation and contributes to innovation outcomes. The effects associated with key enabling technologies are not statistically significant in the current sample. Although indirect effects are observed, their statistical reliability is limited due to the small size of the subgroups analysed. Research limitations/implications The study has a limited regional scope, focusing on bioeconomy enterprises in Malopolska, which limits the generalisability of the results. The cross-sectional design and sample size limit the identification of indirect effects and the assessment of long-term innovation dynamics, especially with regard to key enabling technologies. In addition, there was no in-depth analysis of employee skills, sustainability factors and technological heterogeneity. Future research should employ longitudinal and comparative designs, larger samples and improved measurement models to better capture capacity development, technological heterogeneity and policy-driven innovation processes in the bioeconomy sector. Practical implications The results suggest that managers can benefit from prioritising the development of internal capabilities such as process maturity, organisational knowledge and overall innovation capacity. From a policy perspective, the results suggest that supporting sector-specific skills development, cluster collaboration and targeted R&D incentives may be more effective than broadly defined technology push-based programmes, particularly in the context studied. Social implications Strengthening the capacity of bioeconomy enterprises can accelerate sustainable transformation, reduce resource consumption and bring social benefits through eco-innovation in food, materials and environmental services. Originality/value The study presents a multidimensional, market-contingent model and shows that internal capabilities outweigh external technologies in driving sustainability-oriented innovation.

Digital infrastructure and regional innovation disparities in China: a core-periphery analysis with policy implications

ABSTRACT Digital infrastructure, as the foundation for urban innovation, has reshaped China’s regional innovation landscape. This study examines whether digital infrastructures’ rapid growth has bridged or widened the regional innovation gap, using a core-periphery perspective. Based on a sample of 270 Chinese cities from 2006 to 2020, empirical results show that digital infrastructure significantly widens the innovation gap between centre and periphery cities. The widening of the gap is mainly attributed to the limitations of the peripheral cities in terms of innovation adaptation capacity and knowledge absorption capacity, resulting in the failure of the innovation-enabling effect of digital infrastructure to be optimally used. The effect of digital infrastructure on the urban innovation gap presents a ‘U-shaped’ curve with geographic distance, with the inflection point at about 300 km from the central city. In addition, heterogeneity analysis indicates that the gap-widening effect of digital infrastructure is more pronounced in the following contexts: the pre-2016 period, the central region, peripheral cities with lower innovation levels, and those with higher market integration. This study offers both theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence to support the collaborative innovation and development of cities as they modernize their digital infrastructure systems.

Purpose The purpose of this article is to analyze data-driven insights as a technological factor capable of generating knowledge from the failures of the organization's previous innovation projects. Furthermore, this new knowledge plays a critical role in expanding the organization's knowledge resources, enabling it to better access and leverage the knowledge provided by its external partners. Design/methodology/approach The three-way interaction model was tested on a sample of 197 Colombian firms operating in medium- and high-digital-intensity sectors, which are characterized by the development of more sophisticated projects and the use of more advanced digital technologies. For this purpose, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed due to its explanatory and predictive capabilities. Findings The main findings reveal that innovation failure is a traumatic experience that triggers evasive and cautious behaviors within the organization and among its members. Moreover, this behavior, which is counterproductive to digital innovation, can only be reversed through prescriptive insights. This is because the nature of such insights enables the automation and decentralization of decision-making, thereby fostering greater agility and responsiveness to market needs. Research limitations/implications This article emphasizes the importance of broadening the organization's innovation approach to include external knowledge and technology, aiming to expedite the development of digital solutions and maximize their potential for market success. Moreover, this study challenges the dominant perspective that views technological and market knowledge gained from unsuccessful innovations as sufficient to prevent failures in subsequent innovation projects. Finally, it addresses the recent call in the literature for the design of innovation models integrating tools or mechanisms aimed at transforming the traumatic experiences of innovation failure into new knowledge assets to improve the performance of subsequent projects. Practical implications The main practical contribution of the article lies in recognizing the significant differences between descriptive and predictive insights versus prescriptive insights in decision-making, due to their distinct nature. Accordingly, the primary recommendation is to prioritize prescriptive insights, which requires the organization to ensure the availability of adequate technological infrastructure, data architecture and quality, as well as specialized technical expertise. Finally, the organizational learning strategy should be oriented toward the systematization of innovation failure in order to generate inputs for data analytics. Social implications This study has important social implications, as it encourages a cultural shift toward viewing innovation failure as a valuable source of collective learning. By highlighting the potential of prescriptive insights to transform failure into actionable knowledge, the article promotes more inclusive access to organizational learning, fosters interorganizational collaboration, and emphasizes the need for knowledge management practices. Moreover, the automation and decentralization of decision-making processes imply evolving skill requirements, underscoring the importance of digital literacy and workforce adaptability in an increasingly data-driven society. Originality/value The originality of this article lies in the application of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive insights to generate organizational knowledge from past innovation failures. This responds to the call in the literature to identify technological tools capable of fostering organizational learning, as well as to the practical need for organizations to recover value from resources invested in failed innovation projects. Furthermore, the study contributes to understanding the combined effect of failure-based learning, enabled through insights, on the organization's ability to leverage both internal and external knowledge for digital innovation.

The Impact of Leadership, Strategic Flexibility, and Organizational Ambidexterity on Entrepreneurial Innovation

With rapid technological progress and fierce competition in the market, businesses must prioritize entrepreneurial innovation to maintain their competitive and secure long-term success. This study, based on a thorough review of relevant theories and empirical research, examines how leadership, strategic flexibility, and organizational ambidexterity collectively affect entrepreneurial innovation. Specially, it clarifies entrepreneurial and transformational leadership, investigating their direct impact on innovation and how they adapt in different contexts. It further explores how strategic flexibility and organizational ambidexterity jointly enhance innovation: strategic flexibility enables market responsiveness, while ambidexterity balances exploration and exploitation, with leadership coordinating both. Besides, it explores the interactive relationship between innovation climate, knowledge management, and key elements, highlighting how leadership influences the innovation climate, fosters knowledge sharing, and boosts resource bricolage to strengthen start-ups’ adaptive capacity. The results show that combining leadership, strategic flexibility, and organizational ambidexterity boosts entrepreneurial innovation, serving as a useful reference for start-ups and highlighting future research opportunities.
