We report that soluble serine proteases such as trypsin and chymotrypsin trigger the shedding and/or detachment of SARS-CoV-2 particles bound to lipid membranes. Shedding kinetics were evaluated upon fluorescence imaging of the labeled virus particles on native membrane mimics. The temporal change in the fluorescence signal, supported by kinetic data from SPR, confirms the fastest shedding of the Delta variant. B.1.1.8 (near Wuhan) and Omicron exhibit comparable shedding kinetics. Membrane-bound Delta variants become laterally mobile upon protease treatment. The other variants are shed from the immobile state. The mean square displacement and probability distribution of lateral displacements of the particles evaluated upon single-particle tracking reveal Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion, arising from the intermittent mobility of the Delta variant. These findings are discussed with a model that describes the "hopping motion" of the Delta variant caused by dynamic membrane binding in the presence of a soluble serine protease.

The objective was to determine if 2-yr old cows differing in residual feed intake (RFI) would differ in forage intake and digesta kinetics. Previously classified 2-yr-old lactating Angus × Hereford cows (12 efficient, [EFF]; 12 inefficient, [INE]) were given a pulse dose of an alkane marker and outfitted with grazing collars. Fecal samples were then collected repeatedly over 4 d in June and August. Daily digestible organic matter (DOM) and crude protein (CP) were estimated from fecal near infrared spectroscopy. Data were analyzed by fitting a non-linear digesta kinetics model to individual cows. A mixed model with RFI treatment, period, and their interaction as fixed effects, and cow within treatment as a repeated random effect, was fitted to the combined kinetics data. There were no treatment differences (P > 0.05) between EFF and INE cows for the variables measured, but period differences were present (P < 0.05). Fecal output tended to increase from spring to summer (P = 0.08) and for INE cattle from spring to summer (P = 0.06) but EFF cattle did not differ from spring to summer (P = 0.59). Total marker residence time in the gastrointestinal tract (RTG) was 38.3 and 40.5 ± 1.2 h for INE and EFF cows, respectively in June, and 44.0 and 42.9 ± 1.2 h for INE and EFF cows in August, increasing (P < 0.001) for INE and tending to increase for EFF (P = 0.097). Period RTG was 39.4 vs. 43.4 ± 0.8 h for June vs. August (P < 0.01). Dry matter intake (DMI) in June was 15.6 ± 1.15 kg for INE cows and 17.6 ± 1.10 kg for EFF cows (P = 0.22). August DMI was 17.0 and 16.3 ± 1.10 kg for INE and EFF cows, respectively (P = 0.67). The DOM was 58.9% vs. 53.8% ± 0.36% for June vs. August (P < 0.0001) and CP was 15.0% ± 0.23% vs. 14.2% ± 0.22% (P < 0.05). The CP in the diet declined from spring to summer for EFF cattle (P < 0.05), but not for INE cattle (P = 0.22). The compartmental mass of undigested dry matter (fill) was 6.6 vs. 8.6 ± 0.42 kg for June vs. August (P < 0.01). Bite rates increased from spring to summer (P < 0.05) and for EFF cattle (P < 0.05), but not INE cattle (P = 0.52). Grazing time tended to increase from spring to summer (P = 0.06), and for INE cattle from spring to summer (P = 0.07), but not for EFF cattle (P = 0.41). Reasonable, though slightly inflated, estimates of DMI with the pulse dose procedure were obtained, but differences in DMI for RFI in a feedlot setting did not translate to a range setting.

Iron and manganese are important water quality parameters, as their presence can lead to undesirable color and odor. Here, hydrochars (HCs) were synthesized from banana peels via hydrothermal carbonization to produce a sustainable adsorbent for efficient iron and manganese removal from water. A 23 factorial design with a central point was carried out to evaluate the variables: (i) activating agent (H3PO4 or NaOH), (ii) temperature (100 and 200 °C), and (iii) residence time (8 and 14 h). HC9 was performed in water at 150 °C for 11 h. Optimal performance was evaluated from Fe2+ and Mn2+ removal. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) confirmed functional groups in all HCs, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) broad peaks between 15-30° indicated an amorphous structure. HC9 showed the best performance for the adsorption of both metals. Equilibrium was reached at 200 min, and the kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption data were best fitted by the Langmuir model for Fe and the Freundlich model for Mn, with maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) values of 33.18 and 19.00 mg g⁻1 for Fe and Mn, respectively. Thus, adsorption using this biochar is a promising and environmentally friendly method for removing those metals from aqueous systems.

Muscle synergies, defined as coordinated activations of muscle groups, are thought to simplify motor control by reducing dimensionality and providing a repertoire of adaptable motor solutions. While prior research has investigated synergy adaptation in clinical populations and healthy individuals, most evidence stems from constrained or low-degree-of-freedom (DOF) tasks. A critical gap remains in understanding how synergies are refined in high-DOF, performance-driven contexts that demand full-body coordination. To address this, we examined neuromuscular strategies in professional and amateur golfers performing a 7-iron swing. Electromyographic recordings from 27 muscles, along with kinematic and kinetic data, were analyzed to identify kinematic predictors of clubhead speed and their associated muscle activation patterns. Muscle synergy and clustering analysis of these key muscles revealed two group-invariant synergies, pelvis rotation and plantarflexion, whose peak activation timings were significantly correlated with clubhead speed. A significant subject-specific synergy and a significant amateur-exclusive synergy further highlighted how adaptation involves both individualized tuning and filtering of suboptimal strategies. These findings suggest that expert performance in complex, high-DOF tasks relies on temporal refinement of existing synergies rather than structural reorganization, highlighting the importance of managing, rather than minimizing, motor complexity in the acquisition of advanced motor skills. Furthermore, our approach for identifying neuromuscular patterns linked to performance outcomes provides a foundation for targeted training interventions aimed at enhancing or restoring complex movement patterns.
