Diversity of Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera) in Sumber Clangap and Waduk Selorejo, East Java

Diversity of butterflies in various habitats very diverse, and it is one of them in the region Sumber Clangapdan Waduk Selorejo. It has seen from the combination of colors and which wing shape varies. In this, bothregions were chosen because it had been affected by Mount Kelud eruption, which causes damage to thesurrounding area. The purpose of this research is to know the diversity of butterflies (Lepidoptera:Rhopalocera) in the region of Sumber Clangap and Waduk Selorejo, East Java. This research wasconducted on 26-29 January 2019. Sampling has taken by the method of Belt transect along the transectpath randomly with a technique snapshot experiment and a sweeping technique. Based on theobservations obtained 3 of the same family, Nymphalidae, Pieridae, and Papillionidae. The butterflydiversity in Waduk Selorejo belongs to low, whereas in Sumber Clangap are classified by index Shannon-Winner = 0.38 H ' and H ' = 2.47. Found eight types of butterflies from 3 families with a total of 13 speciesand has a value of H ' =2.47.

Landslide Susceptibility Mapping (LSM) in Kelud Volcano Using Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation

Mount Kelud eruption on February 2014 has a tremendous impact on the surrounding physical environment which ejected more than 200x106m3 of material. Thus, triggered secondary hazard such as landslides in the surrounding area. The purpose of this study is to map landslides susceptibility using Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) approach in Kelud mountainous area in particular within KRB 1 and 2. The identification of landslide occurrence was conducted based on remote sensing data and field observation along with four considerations criteria; topography, hydrology, soil, and environmental characteristics. Each factor then reduced into several sub-criteria such as slope, aspect, topographic position index, topographic wetness index, stream power index, rainfall, soil texture, soil structure, COLE index and land use. The SMCE method was also engaged with expert judgment provided by academic university’ view and the BPBD agencies. The result showed that the river channel and surrounding areas categorized as landslide high prone area. Furthermore, eruption material found as the sources of landslides occurrences.

Dynamics of Lahar Material Deposition Post 2014 Kelud Eruption of Bladak River

Kelud volcano eruption on February 2014 has a tremendous impact on several around volcanic prone areas. Bladak catchment on the west flank of Kelud Volcano is the most affected area post-eruption in 2014. This area covered by pyroclastic material and lahar. Lahar is the most potential hazard in the study area. Lahar hazard in Bladak river has long records not only from the current eruption but also from several past eruptions. The dynamics of lahar material deposition necessary needed to study in order to understand the physical characteristics of lahar. Field survey and GIS was used to gain information about lahar deposition characteristics. The results showed there were two different factors on lahar depositions behavior: 1) natural geomorphologic process and, 2) human-induced on river environment. The natural process shows that lahar on Bladak has different materials from the lithofacies analysis. Human activities on the river have a positive impact on normalizing the flow of the Bladak river to reduce the danger of lahar floods.

The level participation in efforts mount Kelud eruption disaster mitigation in East Java

Indonesia location is between four plates, there are: Eurasian, Indo-Australian, Philiphines, dan Pasicic. Subduction between plates make Indonesia disturbed a natural incident such as mountain eruption. One of disturbed mountain eruption disaster area is District Ngancar, Kediri Regency. This case because Ngancar location near Kelud slope. People participation for efforts mitigations is very important for reduced natural incident impact. The aim this paper to discuss form and level people participation in District Ngancar for efforts Kelud mountain eruption disaster mitigation. This research is survey with sample 100 from 5.340 head family. The data collected with interview and documentation, then analized by quantitative description with scoring and percentage. The research result showing that people in disaster disturbed zone I, II, and III get participation score each the amount of 1.425, 935, and 1.133. The participation action, include: elucidation disaster, organizing disaster preparedness, preparing self, making early warning system, and saving property.

Special Issue on Integrated Study on Mitigation of Multimodal Disasters Caused by Ejection of Volcanic Products: Part 2

Our research project titled “Integrated study on mitigation of multimodal disasters caused by ejection of volcanic products” began in 2014 under SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) and is now coming to an end in 2019. Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes distributed along its archipelago making it a high risk location for volcano-related disasters. The target volcanoes in our study are Guntur, Galunggung, Merapi, Kelud, and Semeru in Java, and Sinabung in North Sumatra. Guntur and Galunggung are currently dormant and are potentially high-risk volcanoes. Merapi generated pyroclastic flows along the Gendol River in 2010, which resulted in over 300 casualties and induced frequent lahars. New eruptive activity of Merapi began in 2018. The 2014 eruption of Kelud formed a gigantic ash plume over 17 km high, dispersing ash widely over the island of Java. Semeru continued minor eruptive activity, accompanying a risk of a dome collapse. The aim of our research includes disaster mitigation of the Sinabung volcano, whose eruption began to form a lava dome at its summit at the end of 2013, followed by frequent pyroclastic flows for approximately 4 years, and the deposits became the source of rain-triggered lahars. Our goal is to implement SSDM (Support System for Decision-Making), which would allow us to forecast volcano-related hazards based on scales and types of eruptions inferred from monitoring data. This special issue collects fundamental scientific knowledge and technology for the SSDM as output from our project. The SSDM is an integrated system of monitoring, constructed scenarios, forecasting scale of eruption, simulation of sediment movement and volcanic ash dispersion in the atmosphere. X-band radars newly installed by our project in Indonesia were well utilized for estimation of spatial distribution not only of rain fall in catchments but also of volcanic ash clouds. Finally, we hope the SSDM will continue to be utilized under a consortium in Merapi, which was newly established in collaboration with our projects, and extended to other volcanoes.

Ash Particles Detected in the Tropical Lower Stratosphere

AbstractWe report here on measurements of relatively large (up to ≃5‐μm maximum dimension) particles detected in the tropical western Pacific lower stratosphere. The particles were observed at low relative humidities and contain no detectable ice mass. We conclude that these particles are silicate ash injected by the Mount Kelud eruption in Indonesia a few weeks prior to the aircraft observations. The Kelud ash particles were detected by cloud probes on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global Hawk between the lapse rate tropopause (≃16.5 km) and the aircraft ceiling (18.5 km). The ash particles detected in the lowermost stratosphere by the aircraft extended well into the northern subtropics. The concentration of ash particles dropped off rapidly below the lapse rate tropopause, presumably because of rapid removal by ice nucleation scavenging. Although ash particles are very effective ice nuclei, the low particle concentrations detected in the upper troposphere precludes a significant impact on cirrus clouds.

Globally detected volcanic lightning and umbrella dynamics during the 2014 eruption of Kelud, Indonesia

Volcanic lightning shows considerable promise as a monitoring and research tool to characterize explosive eruptions. Its key strengths are rapid and remote detection, because the radio signals produced by lightning can propagate thousands of km at the speed of light. Despite these tantalizing properties, the scientific work on volcanic lightning has only recently started gaining momentum. Much more is needed to understand what lightning reveals about the evolution of an eruption in near-real time. Here we examine the timing and energy release of lightning generated by the eruption of Kelud volcano in Indonesia on 13 February 2014, as detected by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN). The eruption column reached at least 26 km above sea level, representing the highest plume since the advent of global lightning networks in the last decade. Therefore, it provides valuable constraints on the electrification of end-member, sustained Plinian columns. We investigate the lightning in context with satellite images, photographs, and other published studies. Results show that the earliest satellite-detected activity was a thermal anomaly at ~15:46 UTC, corresponding to a directed blast at the onset of eruption (and only a few lightning strokes). Following a brief pause, the eruption produced a sustained column and umbrella cloud that spread outward into the tropical stratosphere. Rates of umbrella expansion provide an average mass eruption rate (MER) in the range of 8 × 107–1 × 108 kg s−1. A more nuanced picture emerges from the time-varying MERs (determined between each satellite pass), which show rapid intensification during the first hour of eruption, followed by constant MER for about an hour, and waning toward the end (after ~17:50 UTC). At this stage, decreasing flux into the umbrella cloud coincides with column instability and formation of pyroclastic density currents, as recorded by photos from the ground ~17:45 UTC. We infer that some of the erupted mass partitioned into ground-hugging currents, leading to a lower apparent MER. Interestingly, there is not a 1:1 correlation between lightning intensity and MER over the course of eruption. Stroke rates increase sharply within the first 30–40 min (during rapid intensification of the plume), and then drop below 2 strokes per min once the MER remains constant. This suggests that electrification was controlled by the rate of increase in MER—in other words, the acceleration of particles out of the vent. We also show that lightning stroke-rates and energies are greatest within 50 km of the vent, even when the ash cloud extends >200 km downwind, indicating that lightning was focused in the regions of highest particle concentration and turbulence. Overall, we conclude that abrupt changes in lightning rates are clearly linked to changes in eruption behavior, and that rapid detection could aid monitoring efforts to characterize eruption rates or styles.

Characteristics of Trace Elements in Volcanic ash of Kelud Eruption in East Java, Indonesia

The eruption of Mount Kelud that occurred on February 13, 2014, ejected a huge plume of ash and sand exceeding 26 km into the air which moved west over the island. The elements content in volcanic ash is important information for further study such as the possibility to utilize the ash. In this study, the volcanic ashes collected from four affected areas in Java were analyzed using neutron activation analysis (NAA) with HPGe detector and X-ray fluorescence. Method validation was applied using the standard reference material SRM NIST 2711a Montana Soil with recovery and accuracy in a good agreement for all elements. The analysis results of volcanic ashes showed a wide range of elements, major elements Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Si and Ti, trace elements As, Cd, Cu, Co, Cr, V, Zn, Hf, Th and U, and rare earth elements were identified. The results showed heavy metals As, Cd, Cu, Co, Cr, and Pb were ranged 3.23–4.42, 17.63–24.09, 49.26–77.10, 10.86–16.03, 11.19–17.79 and 31.4–42.7 mg/kg, respectively, while rare earth elements such as Ce, Eu, La, and Sm were 9.84–18.43, 0.73–1.02, 2.25–5.66 and 1.34–2.63 mg/kg respectively. Comparison with other volcanic ashes from Indonesia such as Merapi and Sinabung and world volcanic ashes were applied. The results of the characteristic of elements in Kelud volcanic ash would be valuable information as reference data for their potential utilization.

Provisioning and Cultural Services of Restored Ecosystem in Mount Kelud After 2014 Eruption

Mount Kelud eruption in 2014 was recorded as the largest eruption in the history of Mount Kelud volcanic activity. The ecosystem restoration was implemented after eruption, and so far there are few studies regarding the value of the restored area, especially in the perspective of ecosystem services values. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the ecosystem services of restored area of Mt. Kelud after three year or eruption restoration program and develop appropriate restoration strategies based on the potentiality of its cultural services. Field survey was done at the restored area after mountain eruption in 2014. The location of Mt. Kelud is administratively located at Sugihwaras Village, Ngancar District, Kediri Regency, East Java. Ecosystem service was observed following Wunder and Thorsen ecosystem service classification. Interviews with informant was performed to generate data regarding the socio-ecological aspect of restoration program and determining the ecosystem services in the perspectives of local community. In order to describe the strategy for the development of nature-based tourism as one of the important cultural services in Mt. Kelud, a SWOT analysis was performed to evaluate the possibility strategy to developed nature-based tourism in restored area. Results of this study shows that after three years of restoration, two ecosystem services were observed in Mt. Kelud, the provisioning services and cultural services. These services were identified contribute to the local community through numerous forestry program and nature-based tourism activity. The potentiality of nature based tourism development in restored area depend on the ability to drawn restoration planning which is combined by sustainable recreation activity in restoration area. IMPLEMENTATION OF GRAMEEN BANK PATTERNS IN INCREASING AND STRENGTHENING THE MIDDLE ECONOMIC SECTOR POST-ERUPTION OF KELUD MOUNTAIN

The natural disasters of the Mount Kelud eruption that occurred in Malang Regency in 2014 had a negative impact on the economic conditions and the level of welfare of the communities affected by the eruption. After the eruption of Mount Kelud as a large part of the community that became victims will begin the condition of their economic activities starting from the beginning considering that most of the capital and production factors owned have been damaged and destroyed by the eruption. Meeting capital requirements is a major problem in starting the economic activities of the surrounding community. Capital adequacy by making loans to banking institutions is considered difficult by the community because the community is considered not bankable by financial institutions. The research methodology used in this study is to use descriptive methods by using literature review from various sources and data. The results of this study conclude that the capital shortcomings and difficulties experienced by the surrounding community after the Mount Kelud eruption can be overcome by implementing the Grameen Bank pattern, where the pattern is considered effective and in accordance with the conditions and attitudes of the community that uphold mutual cooperation and family values because of the Grameen Bank pattern adhering to a joint responsibility system.

Disaster risk reduction of Mount Kelud eruption based on capacity building: A case study in Kasembon District, Malang Regency

The ability to respond and recover from disasters is highly dependent on the community’s capacity. This study assessed the community’s capacity level in Kasembon District, an area that was impacted by the Mount Kelud eruption in 2014. Capacity level assessment is done by identifying pentagon asset components, covering human capital, social capital, financial capital, natural capital and physical capital. Bayem is a village with the medium capacity in spite of the low ownership of natural capital, financial capital and physical capital as it has been supported by the active participation of the community within the village organization. Pondok Agung, Kasembon, Sukosari and Pait are four villages which are almost the same with Bayem, but the involvement of the community is not as active as in Bayem. Based on the results of the research, villages that are socially active, tend to have a higher capacity.

School Preparedness toward Kelud Eruption Hazard (Case Study on Kelud Disaster Prone Area)

Preparedness is an important thing to be prepared by schools in disaster prone areas. One of volcanic disaster prone areas is Kelud. Schools around Kelud are known not to have good preparedness in the face of eruption hazard. This study aims to understand the school preparedness, especially primary school in the face of Kelud eruption. The research is located in disaster prone area II Gunung api Kelud in Kediri and Malang Regency. Site selection is based on the impact caused during the eruption period of Kelud Volcano in 2014 includes: SDN Puncu 1 and SDN Pandansari 3. Research subjects include: Principals, Teachers, Students, and Parent Students. The research design used qualitative descriptive technique through in-depth interview data collection and documentation. The results showed that preparedness in the face of disaster is low. Student knowledge is based only on the experience of eruption Kelud in 2014.

Furthering the investigation of eruption styles through quantitative shape analyses of volcanic ash particles

Volcanic ash morphology has been quantitatively investigated for various aims such as studying the settling velocity of ash for modelling purposes and understanding the fragmentation processes at the origin of explosive eruptions. In an attempt to investigate the usefulness of ash morphometry for monitoring purposes, we analyzed the shape of volcanic ash particles through a combination of (1) traditional shape descriptors such as solidity, convexity, axial ratio and form factor and (2) fractal analysis using the Euclidean Distance transform (EDT) method. We compare ash samples from the hydrothermal eruptions of Iwodake (Japan) in 2013, Tangkuban Perahu (Indonesia) in 2013 and Marapi (Sumatra, Indonesia) in 2015, the dome explosions of Merapi (Java, Indonesia) in 2013, the Vulcanian eruptions of Merapi in 2010 and Tavurvur (Rabaul, Papaua New Guinea) in 2014, and the Plinian eruption of Kelud (Indonesia) in 2014. Particle size and shape measurements were acquired from a Particle Size Analyzer with a microscope camera attached to the instrument. Clear differences between dense/blocky particles from hydrothermal or dome explosions and vesicular particles produced by the fragmentation of gas-bearing molten magma are well highlighted by conventional shape descriptors and the fractal method. In addition, subtle differences between dense/blocky particles produced by hydrothermal explosions, dome explosions, or quench granulation during phreatomagmatic eruptions can be evidenced with the fractal method. The combination of shape descriptors and fractal analysis is therefore potentially able to distinguish between juvenile and non-juvenile magma, which is of importance for eruption monitoring.

Ketersediaan dan Serapan Ca Pada Kacang Tanah di Tanah Alfisols yang Diberi Abu Vulkanik Kelud dan Pupuk Kandang

<p class="Default"><span>Volcanic ash actually need agent like an organic matter to mineralized. The study aims is to determine the effect of volcanic ash of Kelud and manure on the availability of calcium in Alfisols, the absorbent of calsium and their status for peanuts growth.This is greenhouse experiment arranged in factorial completely randomized design with single treatment. The result have been analyzed with analysis of variance by F test at 5% and the average comparison test using DMRT at 5% than will continued with Pearson Corelation test for analyzing the relation of intervariable. The results showed that volcanic ash of Kelud eruption and manure treatment significantly on leaves, chlorophyll, nodules, weight of wet crop stover, pH, CEC, Ca-total and Ca plant tissue but no significant on height of peanuts, stover dry weight, exchangable Ca and Ca uptake.Volcanic ash of Kelud and manure are better used as ameliorant than as a planting media.</span></p>

The Role of Communication in Mount Kelud Eruption Disaster Management Program (Case Study in Ngantru Village, Ngantang District, Malang)

Mount Kelud erupted on February 13, 2014 causing severe damage to public and private facilities in 8 villages in Ngantang, a district in Malang. Post-eruption, the social system was severely damaged, while the local society attempted to survive the disaster. This study aimed to analyze the role of communication in disaster management assisted by the existence of social capital in the aspect of cultivation of crops and agricultural infrastructure. The method used was descriptive qualitative supported by scoring data. Thfindings revealed that the role of communication was to bridge the gap in every aspect of social capital. Besides that, communication functioned as a liaison from every aspect of social capital that was used as disaster management during Mount Kelud eruption The type of communication used was interpersonal communication, where members shared activities and information face-to-face or face-to-face activities on disaster management in Mount Kelud.

Dynamic Land Resources Management at the Mount Kelud, Indonesia

There is a contradictive situation between the theory that believes that high volcanic hazard areas should be for limited production zones and those areas that are intensively utilised for several production activities. This paper tries to discuss that contradictive situation from both the perspective of natural hazards and natural resources, therefore, the best options for the land utilisation pattern might be formulated at these high volcanic hazards areas. We conducted landscape analysis that covers volcanic morphology, volcanic materials, and both natural and artificial processes that modify the morphology and materials characteristics. The natural processes occurring in the high volcanic hazard might cover non-volcanic processes such as erosion and landslide. The artificial processes were usually considered as land utilisation activities by the local community. In such areas where both natural and artificial processes occurred, we conducted in-depth interviews to assess the community perception on thread and benefits of the last Kelud Eruption in February 2014. We evaluated the current land resources utilisation and portrayed the local adaptive land resource utilisation. There were three types of land resources available at the active volcano: space, natural scenery, and volcanic materials. The availability of these land resources was in a dynamic condition both in terms of quality and quantity. Immediately after the eruption, the natural scenery made the area attractive as a tourist destination. Following the high intensity of rainfall, the volcanic materials might be used as high-quality construction materials. The available space might be utilised for any purposes after the situation became relatively stable. The current space was mostly used for agricultural enterprises which accommodates the physical and socio-cultural characteristics of the active volcano environment.

Determination of the mass eruption rate for the 2014 Mount Kelud eruption using three-dimensional numerical simulations of volcanic plumes

Using a three-dimensional fluid dynamic model for eruption cloud dynamics, we present numerical simulations of the development of a volcanic eruption column and umbrella cloud formed during the 13 February 2014 eruptions of Mount Kelud, Indonesia. The model used in this study quantitatively reproduces the observed data and, in particular, the plume height and the horizontal expansion level and rate of the umbrella cloud. The simulation results suggest that on the basis of the plume height and structures and the horizontal expansion level of the umbrella cloud the mass eruption rate (MER) for the 2014 Kelud eruptions was 3×107 to 4×107kgs−1. On the basis of the horizontal expansion rate of the umbrella cloud, on the other hand, the estimated MER was 1×108kgs−1. The difference between these two estimates implies the strong diffusion in the umbrella cloud or the efficient entrainment of ambient air by eruption column.

Use of respiratory protection in Yogyakarta during the 2014 eruption of Kelud, Indonesia: Community and agency perspectives

The 2014 explosive eruption of Kelud volcano, Indonesia ejected fine-grained volcanic ash in a plume which travelled westwards across the island of Java. In Yogyakarta, without warning, up to 5cm of ash was deposited within a few hours. This paper investigates the community and organizational response to the respiratory hazard of the ashfall, in the city of Yogyakarta.In any location where ashfall is a rare event, people located away from the primary volcanic hazards will be concerned about whether volcanic ash in their environment is dangerous to inhale, and how they should protect themselves. The World Health Organization primarily recommends that people stay indoors, or use light-weight face masks if outdoors. In the first study of its kind, we undertook a rapid questionnaire survey (with 125 respondents) on the use of community respiratory protection when ash is in the air. We documented the types of masks people wore, where they had got the mask from, why people wore masks, who advised them to wear a mask, and whether people thought their respiratory protection was effective.We also conducted informal interviews with a range of emergency management and health agencies, NGOs and a children's charity, to understand how those involved in mask procurement and distribution responded to the crisis, and to determine their understanding of the effectiveness of the masks that they provide.The study showed that a wide range of respiratory protection is used by those who choose to protect themselves, from cloth through to highly-efficient face masks, but with most people wearing surgical masks. Masks are widely available, from street stalls and shops, but are also distributed by government agencies, NGOs and employers. The organizations interviewed mainly distribute surgical masks to the public. Most people wore masks through their own initiative because they understood that there could be a health hazard, although some people wear them anyway when riding scooters (to protect from inhaling vehicle exhaust and street dust). Around 40% of the respondents thought that their existing protection was not sufficiently effective and around 30% of the respondents took measures to try to improve the effectiveness of their chosen protection method (e.g., wearing two types concurrently).This pilot paves the way for the Health Interventions in Volcanic Eruptions (HIVE) project which aims to provide an evidence base on effective respiratory protection for community use when ash is airborne, so that health agencies and other suppliers can provide reliable protection for the general population. The HIVE project will experimentally test the effectiveness of the range of types of respiratory protection identified in this study, as well as understanding the behaviours and environmental and cultural issues which affect whether people will wear masks when ash is in the air.

The Eruption of Mount Kelud and It’s Impacts in Blitar 1919-1922

This study is meant to deal with the aftermaths of Mount Kelud Eruption from 1919 to 1922 in the region of Blitar, which is focused on the effects of Mount Kelud eruption on the economy and its impacts for the three years following the eruption. The aftermaths of Mount Kelud eruption of 1919 had caused many of the residents lose their livelihood, families and damages to the plantations in the region of Blitar. The damages affecting the plantations made the local economy in the region of Blitar drop. This economic slump certainly impeded the development progress in the Gemeente of Blitar, a Gemeente had been formed in the region of Blitar shortly before that. The extensive environmental devastation, inside the gemeente and the outer parts of the regency’s regions forced the regional government of Blitar Regency to allocate aids funds to handle the casualties, make the repairs and constructions of the facilities in the region of Blitar.

The Development of Local Wisdom-Based Natural Science Module to Improve Science Literation of Students

<p>The vulnerability of communities in facing volcano disaster is one of the indicators of the low literacy of science. The low knowledge about volcanic material causes it needs to be packed in an attractive learning so that it can tap into the ability of students’ science literacy by using teaching materials that are closer to student learning environments. This research aims to develop the local wisdom-based natural science module on the theme of Mount Kelud eruption, which is both theoretical and empirical. The type of this research development is Research and Development (R & D) by adapting the ASSURE instructional design. The results of this research are the validation results of theoretical feasibility of teaching materials based on the components of material feasibility of 87, 5% with very good category, components of presentation feasibility of 91, 7% with very good category, components of language feasibility of 88, 9% with very good category, components of local wisdom values of 87, 5% with very good category, and components of science literacy feasibility of 88, 9% with 88, 9% with very good category. The results of empirical feasibility are the test results of students’ science literacy with N-gain variation value of 0,2; 0,3; and 0,4 respectively with low, medium, and medium category. The results show that the developed local wisdom-based natural science module is suitable to improve the ability of students’ science literacy either theoretically or empirically.</p>
