Genetic control of allozymes from the juniper tall (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) of Crimea

The genetic control of nine enzyme systems has been analyzed in the preserved juniper species (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) from a natural population of the Mountain Crimea. Isozymes were extracted from endosperms of the haploid seeds to be studied by electrophoresis. As a result 16 loci have been identified, of which 14 loci were polymorphic (Gdh, Got-1, Mdh-1, Mdh-2, Mdh-3, Acp-1, Acp-2, Acp-3, Lap-1, Dia-1, Fdh, Sod-1, Sod-2, and Sod-3). Analysis of allele segregation in heterozygous trees confirmed monogenic inheritance of these alleles.

Structure and regeneration patterns of the Juniperus excelsa Bieb. stands in the central part of the Nestos valley in the northeast of Greece, in the context of anthropogenic disturbances and nurse plant facilitation

AbstractIn order to analyse the structure and regeneration patterns of the Juniperus excelsa Bieb. stands on the slopes of the Nestos valley, 40 sample plots were established and more than 120 J. excelsa trees and seedlings were cut and collected. The main results of this research indicate that stand structure, species mixture, age structure and stand development patterns were strongly determined by the interaction of anthropogenic disturbances such as grazing and illegal cuttings, and the facilitation of adult J. excelsa trees in the establishment of the J. excelsa seedlings. Their effect was influenced by site quality and J. excelsa together with other species ecology. Under present conditions, almost all J. excelsa seedlings, except for a small number of plants, are found under the facilitation of nurse plants that belong to the same species. It seems that the layer of litter underneath the nurse plants combined with the protection of seedlings against grazing play an important role in the establishment and growth of J. excelsa seedlings.

THE STAND STRUCTURES OF KOVADA LAKE NATIONAL PARK FORESTS

The aim of this study was to find out the actual structures and dynamics the mixed stands of Taurus Fir (Abies cilicica Carr.) and Anatolian Black Pine (Pinus nigra Arn. subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe) and pure stands of Brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.), Oak (Quercus spp.) and Crimean Juniper (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) of “Kovada Lake National Park” located in Isparta Regional Forest. In the study, 10 sample plots have been separated to represent the pure and mixed stands of the National Park. In this contex, 3 sample plots for Taurus Fir and Anatolian Black pine mixed stands and 4 sample plots for Brutian pine, 2 sample plots for Oak and 1 sample plot for Crimean Juniper pure stands have been selected, respectively. The distributions of volume and volume characteristics of the top, middle and bottom stories of stands have been determined in the representative of those selected sample plots. DETERMINATION of PROPER SOWING TECHNIQUES for CRIMEAN JUNIPER (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) and SMALL FRUITED JUNIPER (Juniperus oxycedrus L.)

In this study, the effects of sowing depth, seed cover material, mulching, sheltering and irrigation on the seed germination percent of Crimean Juniper (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) and Small Fruited Juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus L.) were determined. The study material (seeds) was collected from a natural population of each species located in Egirdir-Cire forest district. The experiments related to the study were laid out according to “Completely Randomized Design” with three replications in Egirdir Forest Nursery. Germination percents relating the different sowing techniques were analyzed by using SPSS statistical software. The variance analysis and Duncan test showed that the best sowing depth in terms of germination was 2 mm depth for Crimean Juniper. However, the sowing depth should be set out according to the cover material to be used for Small Fruited Juniper. Keywords: Crimean Juniper, Small Fruited Juniper, Sowing tecnique.

Chemical Composition and Antifungal Activity of the Essential Oil from Juniperus excelsa Berries

Essential oil of Juniperus excelsa Bieb M (Cupressaceae) was evaluated for antifungal activities against 17 micromycetes (Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. versicolor, A. flavus, A. terreus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium tricinctum, Penicillium ochrocloron, P. funiculosum, Phomopsis helianthi, Trichoderma viride, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. tonsurans, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis). Among tested fungal species were the food poisoning species, plant, animal, and human pathogen. The essential oil showed antifungal activity.
