Indonesian Shariah Hospital Implementation Helping The Halal Industry’s Ecosystem: The Swot Analysis

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of implementing sharia hospitals in Indonesia to help the halal industry ecosystem in Indonesia. Design/Method/Approach: This type of research is qualitative, using descriptive methods and SWOT analysis. Secondary data comes from DSN MUI Fatwa Number 107/DSN-MUI/X/2016 on Sharia-based hospital organization. Secondary data also includes Sharia hospital journals, proceedings, reports, news, and websites. Documentation is used to collect data. Data is evaluated and interpreted, and conclusions are drawn using applicable references. Findings: This study found that the implementation of sharia hospitals in Indonesia is supported by the strength of DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 107/DSN-MUI/X/2016, the enthusiasm for halal lifestyle, and the development of the MUI halal-certified medicine, food, and beverage sectors. Opportunities in the form of high market demand due to the large Muslim population and support from the tourism sector. Weakness factors include the lack of qualified human resources for Islamic hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry, which still imports raw materials that do not meet halal standards. The threat is the conventional-based Indonesian public health insurance (BPJS), which contains usury elements that do not meet Sharia principles in Islamic hospitals. Originality/Values: This research contributes to increasing awareness of the importance of sharia hospitals in Indonesia and helps formulate appropriate sharia hospital development strategies for the sustainability of the halal industry ecosystem based on the SWOT analysis results. Keywords: Health Services, Sharia Hospital, SWOT Analysis, Halal Ecosystem.

Research methods for aging populations in tourism and hospitality: a systematic review and critical reflection

PurposeThis study aims to systematically review and critically assess research methods for studying aging populations in tourism and hospitality. It identifies gaps and provides recommendations for advancing methodological innovation in response to emerging research agendas.Design/methodology/approachFollowing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of existing literature on aging populations in tourism and hospitality. Searches were performed in major databases, including Scopus and Web of Science, to collect peer-reviewed, English articles published in Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)-indexed tourism and hospitality journals from 1965 to 2025. The methodologies employed in the selected studies were thoroughly analyzed.FindingsA total of 184 articles were included in the final analysis. The review revealed that current research methods predominantly rely on surveys and interviews, with limited methodological diversity. Gaps were identified, and a conceptual model was proposed to advance cross-disciplinary integration and foster innovative methods that could more comprehensively capture the complexities of senior tourists, particularly those with health conditions.Originality/valueThis paper is likely the first to synthesize research methodologies within this specific context, outlining a path forward for researchers to adopt more innovative, multidisciplinary approaches. This study lays the foundation for future empirical investigations into the behaviors and experiences of senior tourists, as well as the potential role of tourism in promoting healthy aging. Additionally, it provides valuable insights for tourism marketing practitioners to better accommodate this growing segment.

Beyond metrics: shifting measures of research impact from citations and journal rankings to meaningful impacts on society

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to point out that most research published in hospitality and tourism industry journals is of no value to the visitor industries or society. It argues that a primary reason is the academic practice of evaluating the utility of its research with the inappropriate metrics of journal impact factors and citation counts. To become relevant, academic leaders must refocus evaluation of the field’s research on its meaningful impacts on society.Design/methodology/approachThis study reviews the literature that differentiates the constructs of research quality and research impact and identifies their limitations.FindingsThe contention that either journal impact factors or citation counts adequately measure the usefulness of research is challenged. It is suggested that reliance on them has resulted in an academic self-serving “echo chamber.” The author argues the field should refocus away from the echo chamber to shift the primary evaluation of research to societal impact. Illustrations are offered from the author’s recent experiences that illustrate the fallacy of confusing citation counts with impact. The challenges of shifting to an impact assessment from the existing system are acknowledged, and a way forward is proposed.Research limitations/implicationsContinuing to embrace beguiling measures that are invested with a conventional, but false, aura of truth inevitably means the field’s scholarship will continue to be ignored.Originality/valueAn analytical critique of the prevailing metrics is undertaken, and a five-step process to shift the emphasis to societal impact is offered.

Journal editors’ views on altmetrics in tourism and hospitality research

ABSTRACT This study explores the awareness, perceived usefulness, and potential future roles of altmetrics among journal editors in the tourism and hospitality field. Altmetrics measure online engagement and research mentions, providing impact measures beyond citation-based metrics. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining altmetrics data analysis with qualitative interviews of editors from the top 25 tourism and hospitality journals. The findings reveal a range of awareness and perceived usefulness among editors. The study suggests altmetrics could increasingly assess the broader societal impact of research, though editors need more publisher support to leverage these metrics effectively. By offering insights into the application of altmetrics in tourism and hospitality literature, the study contributes to the understanding of alternative metrics in evaluating research impact.

Balancing Tradition and Modernity: The Brand Personality of Santiniketan as a Tourist Destination

The present case study rigorously investigates the brand personality of Santiniketan, a prominent tourism destination in West Bengal, India. This research aims to explore the dominant personality dimensions that define Santiniketan’s identity and to examine potential differences in perceptions between tourists who have visited the town and those who have not. Santiniketan’s unique identity, rooted in its cultural heritage, customs and the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, is communicated through diverse marketing campaigns and promotions. A strong and positive brand personality can set a destination apart, providing a significant competitive advantage and facilitating increased visitation rates. To evaluate Santiniketan’s brand personality, traditionally associated with peace, tranquillity and spirituality, while exploring additional dimensions such as sustainability and environmental consciousness, this study used the rigorous Destination Personality Scale by Kumar and Nayak (2018, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, 42, 1, 3–25). The study employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative tools, to gather data from 97 respondents through focus group interviews and surveys. Participants aged 18–70 were divided into those who had visited Santiniketan and those who had not but were knowledgeable about the destination. The findings indicate that courteousness, conformity, creativity and tranquillity significantly influence tourists’ perceptions of Santiniketan, with notable differences between visitors and non-visitors. This research contributes to the literature on destination branding by comprehensively understanding Santiniketan’s brand personality, emphasizing its cultural attributes and rich heritage as critical factors in its success as a popular tourist destination. The insights gained can assist destination marketers in aligning their strategies to enhance tourists’ perceptions and increase visitation rates. This study addresses the gap in academic inquiry into Santiniketan’s brand personality, offering valuable implications for developing and promoting similar cultural heritage destinations.

Well-being of hospitality employees: A systematic literature review

The hospitality industry employees' well-being is relevant for practitioners and researchers alike. Academic interest in hospitality employee well-being (EWB) has been steadily rising. Yet, the unintended result has been a fragmentation of the field, with at least 42 different theories addressing issues of EWB in hospitality. This study adopts a systematic literature review approach to re-balance a fragmentation that can lead to myopia and assesses relevant literature on EWB in hospitality. The study identifies 122 articles in 19 relevant hospitality journals listed in Scopus utilising the PRISMA process and analyses them with the help of a framework derived from well-being reviews in corresponding fields, such as human resource management. The findings account for individual, group and organisational level stressors, resources and practices affecting EWB in hospitality, and they are subsequently related to the theoretical landscape in the field, suggesting future avenues for research.

Beyond the Metrics: Call for a Holistic Approach for Evaluating Hospitality and Tourism Journals

ABSTRACT Journal ranking serves as an important reference for research individuals and institutes in various academic activities such as promotion and position application. Currently, there are two major approaches in evaluating journal rankings, namely quantitative and qualitative approaches. However, each approach has pros and cons. In addition, two typical issues of adopting metrics-related journal ranking systems are identified, which are self-citation and incomparability among different areas. The purpose of this paper is not to propose an advanced evaluation method. Instead, this study advocates that researchers should prioritize conducting high-quality studies and look beyond the metrics.

Viewing hospitality from an interdisciplinary lens: a systematic review of 30-year research on hospitality in health care

PurposeThis study aims to examine the conceptual and empirical operations of hospitality at its intersections with health care, which includes medical and senior care.Design/methodology/approachThis study conducts a systematic review of literature on hospitality in health care published in hospitality, tourism and leisure journals spanning from 1990 to 2023. A total of 50 studies meeting the inclusion criteria are reviewed, providing insights into how hospitality is conceptualized, its practical implementation and the proposed outcomes in health-care settings.FindingsHospitality in health care is conceptualized by hospitality scholars in three main ways: as service functions, as a service exchange and as an organizational culture. There is a significant overlap between the notion of hospitality and the concept of person-centered care in gerontology and health-care literature. Also, hospitality contributes positively to patient/resident experiences, organizational performance and societal impacts.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited by its focus solely on the theoretical and practical aspects of hospitality in health care within hospitality, tourism and leisure journals, excluding relevant literature from gerontological and health-care journals.Originality/valueInterdisciplinary research requires scholars from different disciplines to develop a common language and understanding of key concepts. This study presents the conceptual and practical domains of hospitality and its relevancy to health-care research and offers future directions to strengthen the interdisciplinary research between hospitality, health care and gerontology.

Publishing in Hospitality and Tourism Journals

This study aims to identify the criteria reviewers use to determine whether to accept or reject empirical manuscripts and to define which criteria are more significant. In this exploratory study, which utilizes qualitative research methods, 16 members of the Scientific Committee of the National Tourism Congress of Turkiye were asked to identify the primary areas they focus on when reviewing a manuscript. The data was analyzed using content analysis to determine the most significant criteria. The study identifies six criteria for acceptance and seven for rejection. The most important criterion for acceptance is the appropriateness and adequacy of the research method, while the most crucial criterion for rejection is methodological weakness. Other criteria influencing the reviewers' acceptance or rejection decisions focus on similar issues. The critical factor that distinguishes them is how the manuscript meets the requirements established by the reviewers. The study provided recommendations for future researchers.

Value formation in AI-integrated service system: review and implications on hospitality and tourism research

ABSTRACT The ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and other disruptive technologies, has attracted a surge of AI studies. Previous reviews primarily offered a bird’s view of AI research and were somewhat one-sided focusing on AI’s bright sides. Reviews on the networks of resources, process dynamics, and divergent outcomes of this complex system are rare, if any. This review article aims to fill this research gap by deconstructing how value is formed in the AI-integrated service system. Guided by the SPAR-4-SLR protocol and interactive value formation framework, this study reviewed and analyzed state-of-the-art AI studies (i.e. 2019–2023) published in six selected top-tier hospitality and tourism journals. This review makes contributions by outlining the resource orchestration, resource integration practices, and divergent outcomes of value formation in the AI-integrated system in hospitality and tourism. Future research directions and implications were also provided to advance the field.

A simplified approach for food traveller segmentation based on involvement

ABSTRACT This study reveals a simple but effective method of segmenting food travellers (also called culinary travellers or food tourists) based on involvement. Respondents are asked a three-item battery measuring purchase involvement adapted from the Mittal & Lee's article “A causal model of consumer involvement”, published in the Journal of Economic Psychology. By adding up the scores, three segments of food travellers (high, medium, and low food travel involvement) can be identified. The three segments are significantly heterogeneous in attitudes toward food and drink, role of food and drink in destination choice, social influence on food and drink, and food and drink activities. For each attitude or behaviour, high food travel involvement travellers rate higher than medium-involvement travellers, who rate higher than low-involvement travellers. This research supports three-cluster segmentation of food tourists provided by Levitt et al.'s article “Food tourist segmentation: Attitude, behavioral intentions and travel planning behavior based on food involvement and motivation” published in the International Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Administration, while providing a new approach that can be simply implemented by researchers and destinations without complicated statistical analysis or long lists of questions.

Charting a Course for Sustainable Hospitality by Exploring Leadership Theories and Their Implications

A literature review was undertaken to examine the present state of research on sustainability-related leadership in the hospitality field. Twenty-two articles from renowned hospitality journals were carefully selected for analysis. The review findings indicate that several leadership theories, like transformational and responsible leadership, have been employed to comprehend the influence of leadership on sustainability performance in organizations. Most of the research conducted so far has focused on Asian cultures and hotel settings, with quantitative surveys being the predominant research method utilized. Notably, environmental sustainability has received more attention than social sustainability concerns within the existing body of literature. Based on the identified research gaps, this paper sets the groundwork for future research on sustainable leadership. By addressing the limitations observed in current research, further investigations can expand our knowledge and understanding of sustainable leadership practices within the hospitality industry.
