A philosophical and practical approach to an inclusive community chorus

Abstract This holistic study explores the inclusive community chorus ‘Singing Songbirds’ in Millbrook, Dutchess County, New York. The chorus is part of the Institute for Music and Health’s (IMH) programming. This article investigates the important philosophical approach and its practical application. Underpinning all the work of the IMH is the Diamond Method. This method is based on the work of John Diamond, MD, which includes the Outreach Principle. The choir’s weekly rehearsals, the repertoire and a performance are discussed. The specific accommodations and support for each member, non-disabled and those with disabilities, are also described. Questions posed include the following: in what way is this choir different from other community choruses? Are the various accommodations for members successful? What are the attitudes of the non-disabled choir members to the members with disabilities? The author was a participant/observer during the development of the chorus over four seasons of the choir’s history.

In Morte Media Jubilate [2]: A study of cancer-related pathographies

This article is the second in a two-part series examining media depiction of individuals who are dying from cancer. The first focused on how television documentary film represents individuals with the disease; this second, and complementary, study explores the development and evolution of textual accounts. It begins by charting the history of auto/biographical books, based on the individual cancer experience, and locates the root of this form of document as far back as the Medieval era. It then draws on appropriate examples to conduct a comparison between models from the mid-nineteenth and late twentieth centuries. The paper argues that, although temporal shifts may appear to exert significant change, these differences are largely superficial, as detailed scrutiny of these texts suggests that the essence and needs of the core self remain unchanged. To afford a comprehensive understanding of why these texts continue to be written and sell well within an aggressive market, the paper presents extracts from interviews held with the author of one of these books, a journalist, the late John Diamond. Drawing upon these conversations as evidence, the paper concludes by suggesting that the socio-temporal conditions prevalent in present-day Western society still lack sufficient strength to countenance an open confrontation with the very real traumas involved in dying.

Journalist John Diamond died of cancer in March 2001. His posthumously published Snake Oil and Other Preoccupations is essentially his uncomplimentary look at the world of complementary medicine and a chronological selection of his articles written since the late 1980s.

‘Let me explain’: narrative emplotment and one patient's experience of oral cancer

Recent research has investigated the way in which serious illness potentially poses a threat to peoples’ sense of ontological security by throwing into doubt assumptions about time and the future. One of the main ways in which people adjust to such threats is through the use of narrative (either consciously or unconsciously) which helps to make sense of illness. Of particular relevance to people learning to live with a cancer diagnosis, is the concept of ‘therapeutic emplotment’ developed by Del Vecchio Good et al. (1994). This concept refers to the way in which oncologists are taught to structure temporal horizons for their patients in a particular way in order to instill and maintain hope in the context of arduous and toxic treatments. Using a case-study of one man's process of adapting to oral cancer (John Diamond's posthumously published serialised diary entries in The Times), this paper investigates the way in which such ‘therapeutic emplotment’ is implicitly incorporated by the patient, providing an underlying plot structure to his story. Following Diamond's diary entries over the 4 years duration of his illness, this paper analytically divides them into six main stages, documenting the underlying temporal structure and themes accompanying each stage of adaptation. The paper illustrates the way in which ‘therapeutic emplotment’ encourages the patient to focus on the immediate present and to place faith in the efficacy of specific treatments. However, it also explores how the attempt to live in the context of such a plot is fraught with anxiety for the patient, and how it co-exists with other largely ‘unspoken narratives’ of uncertainty, fear and skepticism in relation to the power of medicine. The main aim of the paper is to document, for the first time, the process of ‘therapeutic emplotment’ from the oral cancer patient's point of view.

Experimental melting of crustal xenoliths from Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico and implications for the contamination and genesis of magmas

Experiments (P=6.9 kb; T=900–1000°C) on four crustal xenoliths from Kilbourne Hole demonstrate the varying melting behavior of relatively dry crustal lithologies in the region. Granodioritic gneisses (samples KH-8 and KH-11) yield little melt ( 900 ppm Ba in high-temperature melts coexisting with a K-feldspar-free restite. Although REE were not measured in either feldspar or melt, the high Kspar/melt Kds for Eu suggests that the melts coexisting with K-feldspar will have strong negative Eu anomalies. Isotopic and trace element models for magma contamination need to take into account the melting behavior of isotopic reservoirs. For example, the most radiogenic (and incompatible element-rich) sample examined here (the pelitic granulite,87Sr/86Sr=0.757) is refractory, while samples with far less radiogenic Sr (87Sr/86Sr=0.708-0.732) produced substantial melt. This suggests that, in this area, the isotopic signature of contamination may be more subtle than expected. The experimental results can be used to model the petrogenesis of Oligocene volcanic rocks exposed 150 km to the NW of Kilbourne Hole, in the Black Range in the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. The experimental results suggest that a crustal melting origin for the Kneeling Nun and Caballo Blanco Tuffs is unlikely, even though such an interpretation is permitted by Sr isotopes. Curstal contamination of a mantle-derived magma best explains the chemical and isotopic characteristics of these tuffs. Both experimental and geochemical data suggest that the rhyolites of Moccasin John Canyon and Diamond Creek could represent direct melts of granodiorite basement similar, but not identical, to the Kilbourne Hole granodiorites, perhaps slightly modified by crystal fractionation. The absence of volcanic rocks having87Sr/86Sr>0.74 in the region is consistent with the refractory character of the pelitic granulite.
