Unveiling Masculinity in Motion: Exploring the Dynamics of Masculine Identity through Reog Dance in Javanese Culture

This research explores perceptions and expressions of masculinity within the Reog dance tradition in Javanese culture. Through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and thematic analysis, the study uncovers diverse perspectives on masculinity, revealing its rich symbolic meanings and cultural significance. Findings illuminate the intricate interplay between tradition and modernity and how gender dynamics manifest in Reog dance performances. The research also highlights the role of the Reog dance in shaping and negotiating gender identities within Javanese society while acknowledging the evolution of masculine ideals over time and across different social contexts. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of masculinity as a culturally constructed phenomenon, shedding light on its manifestations, variations, and transformations within traditional performing arts in Java.

Gender Awareness in Achieving Marital Satisfaction Among Young Professional Families in Indonesia

ABSTRACTGender awareness is considered a significant contributor in determining and impacting marital satisfaction amongst couples and making a strong family. This study explores the role of gender awareness in achieving marital satisfaction among young women professionals residing in Surabaya, Indonesia. The study deployed a qualitative research design, and 56 in‐depth interviews were carried out with women professionals who had been married for less than 5 years. The results show that gender awareness among young professional families varies based on decision‐making. The young women were aware of marital satisfaction about gender roles. There are two groups of women supporting distinctly different ideologies. The first group supports patriarchy, whereas the second group opposes the prevalence of a patriarchal culture. It further seeks to offer novelty in studying gender and marital satisfaction among professional families in Javanese society.

Peran Adipati-Adipati Mangkunegaran Dalam Pelestarian Kepurbakalaan Jawa Kuno (1853-1944)

The dukes of Mangkunegaran have always been interested in Old Javanese heritage. As the leader of the area that contains Old Javanese artifacts and sites, there are several efforts to keep the memory of Old Javanese alive. This article explores the role of Mangkunegaran dukes, from Mangkunegara IV to Mangkunegara VII, in Old Javanese heritage. Historical research was conducted in this article. Various sources, such as letters, newspapers, magazines, and buildings were used in this research. It is known that each duke has undertaken different endeavors. Mangkunegara IV was quite active in Old Javanese history writing and artifact collecting. During the time of Mangkunegara V and VI, little was done due to the economic crisis. Mangkunegara VII supported Old Javanese archaeology activities due to his agenda of reconstructing Javanese society with the foundation of Java’s glorious past. This article is important to understand the role of the colonial era kingdom in heritage protection.

Baptism and discipleship are two things that cannot be separated. In the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus, they are intertwined. One of the concepts contained in baptism is union with Christ found in Romans 6:3-6. This is an important theme that believers must understand, especially through discipleship. On the other hand, the author sees the dominance of the Javanese tribe among the Indonesian population. This dominance occurs in the government, economic sectors, and church life. This fact drives this research to actualize contextual discipleship carried out by the Church towards Javanese congregations. One of the concepts of Javanese thought with a common theme of human unity with God is the concept of manunggaling kawulo gusti. Through the literature research method, this concept is explored in depth. This exploration will be seen and interpreted from the baptism perspective in Romans 6:3-6. As a result, there are points of convergence as well as points of difference. The findings obtained will then become material for the actualization of contextual discipleship in Javanese society.

The Colonial Java Town and Beach: Chronotopical Analysis of Augusta de Wit’s Two Travelogue Chapters

When the twentieth century was around the corner, the plurality of residents and newcomers grew in numbers, forming a dynamic and heterogeneous urban society in colonial Java. Augusta de Wit was one of the Dutch authors who wrote about Java during her stay there in her book form travelogue titled Java: Facts and Fancies. Her experience in Java had left an influence on her, which is shown in her fiction works. One of them is the short story Vijandschap that portrays mostly the rural and idyllic life of a coastal community, yet includes the participation of the town (Batavia) as a commercially promising place. This qualitative study aspires to illuminate how the rural beach community reconciled with the town and to confirm what she means by natural beauty by focusing on two chapters “The Town" and “On the Beach.” It is conducted by employing a close reading method and Torop’s chronotopical analysis consisting of topographical, psychological, and metaphysical chronotopes in Augusta de Wit’s perspective while considering the notion of tropicality. This study discovers that there is a relational function of town as a dynamic marketplace to the local folks on the beach and a “space of home” for the Europeans, while the beach as fruitful home to the native beach community and a soothing recreational place to de Wit. Moreover, natural beauty is not confined to nature solely, but includes the locals alongside their character and habits, who are an intrinsic tropical part of Java.

RITUAL TOLAK BALA PADA KOMUNITAS ORANG JAWA DI MABAR HILIR

This study aims to see how the process of Rejecting Bala Ritual in Javanese Society and to see the social function that exists in this ritual of rejecting reinforcements. This research was carried out in the Mabar Downstream Village, Medan Deli District, Medan City, North Sumatra. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. data sources used are primary and secondary data with key informants as research informants. Data obtained by observation, interview, and documentation methods. researchers use the structure of Functional analysis to see further the problems that exist in the field. Based on the results of this research, it was revealed that the Rejecting Bala Ritual Tradition had existed for a long time, in 1973. And the process of Rejecting Bala Ritual was by way of reciting the word Tauhid, until later at the Penpodo Afnawi Noeh.

The Hydromythological Perspective in Literature on Tuk Bima Lukar: the Source of the Serayu River

Water is not only used for basic life needs such as drinking, bathing, cooking, and washing but also for irrigation and other needs, as it is a source of life. In Javanese society, there are many myths related to water, one of which is the myth of Tuk Bima Lukar, the spring source of the Serayu River. This oral literature myth can be analyzed to gain a deeper interpretation of its contents. Therefore, a multidisciplinary literary approach is needed for a more in-depth discussion. This research employs a hydromythological literary approach. The research reveals that Tuk Bima Lukar is considered holy water, believed to bring eternal youth and blessings to those who use it. Beyond the belief that the water from Tuk Bima Lukar can keep one young, it is also believed to bring its own blessings. This aligns with the concept of hydromythology, which assumes that water is a source of life, implying that the water from Tuk Bima Lukar brings blessings because it provides a source of life to the creatures around it.

Floral Lexicons in Javanese Proverbs: An Ecolinguistic Study

This study aimed to analyze and elaborate on the dimensions of meaning in the floral lexicons in Javanese proverbs. Employing an ecolinguistic approach, this study focused on the expressions in Javanese proverbs that entail floral lexicons. The data were collected using an uninvolved observation method, as well as documentation, observation, and interviews with relevant informants. The data were then analyzed using the referential identity method, translational identity method, and immediate constituent analysis or distributional technique. Further, data triangulation was also conducted to validate the data with the following steps: discussion, re-checking, and expert consultation. The result shows that the floral lexicons entailed in Javanese traditional proverbs take the form of words and phrases. In word or morpheme form, the lexicons are categorized as nouns and polymorphemic expressions consisting of affix, reduplicative, and compound words. The floral lexicons in Javanese proverbs, in accordance with the cultural values they embody, include depicting attitudes and worldviews; reflecting negative attitudes; being related to strong determination; portraying the relationship between humans and God; and illustrating human interactions with other humans, as well as their connection with nature. The lexicons also represent the thought process and cultural values of Javanese society.

Primbon Pernikahan Masyarakat Jawa Desa Suka Mulia Kecamatan Tungkal Ilir Kabupaten Banyuasin

This study describes the meaning of primbon in marriage in Javanese society in Suka Start Village, Tunggal Ilir District, Banyuasin Regency through cultural diffusion as well as describing marriage according to Islam. Primbon are the prophecies of the ancestors of the Javanese people that have been preserved until now and have spread due to transmigration during the Suharto people's government. Evidence of the existence of primbon can be found from Javanese primbon books that regulate people's lives. The framework of thought is needed to provide an explanation of the object (variable) of the subject matter in order to be more detailed, the main issues include: 1. The religious system of the people in Suka Mulia Village towards Javanese tradition and the way of primbon calendar in general. In this study there are several stages of data collection methods, history, such as observation, interviews, documentation and data analysis to reveal a research regularly and accurately. The theory used in this study uses the symbol theory, because primbon is part of a symbol that has its own meaning for the Javanese people. The object/variable to be studied is interpreting the marriage primbon script and the meaning of the primbon which has symbols. The results of this study reveal that in determining a good day (in this study, the matter of marriage), Javanese people believe in ancient primbon and predictions of good days in the implementation of marriage and the consequences of these violations so that primbon has an important meaning for the Javanese people.

MOCK IMPOLITENESS AND SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM IN KI SENO NUGROHO’S JAVANESE SHADOW PUPPET SHOW

This research aims to investigate the use of mock impoliteness in Ki Seno Nugroho’s shadow puppet performances and the formation of symbolic interactionism between the puppeteer and the audience. This is due to the evolving forms of politeness within Javanese society, particularly in the realm of shadow puppet performances in the modern era. Additionally, there is a public perception of Ki Seno Nugroho as a humorous puppeteer using Bagong as a means of communication during his performances. The analysis of conversations between Bagong and other characters is used to explore the context of mock impoliteness and symbolic interactionism in Ki Seno Nugroho’s shadow puppet shows titled “Bagong Duta,” “Bagong Maneges,” and “Semar Mbangun Kayangan.” The results of this study indicate that the use of mock impoliteness serves to create a humorous atmosphere, thus enhancing the entertainment aspect of Ki Seno Nugroho’s shadow puppet performances. Moreover, it seems that Ki Seno Nugroho successfully portrays Bagong in three forms of symbolic interactionism: as a physical entity (the youngest son of Semar, the father of all panakawan characters in the Javanese puppet shadow story), a social entity (a representation of resistance by the common people towards authority), and an abstract entity (an entertainment element in shadow puppet performances).

Tradisi Nyabuk Gunung Pada Masyarakat Lereng Gunung Sumbing, Jawa Tengah Sebagai Upaya Konservasi Lahan Pertanian

Central Java has a variety of cultures and customs that are very unique and interesting to learn, one of which is a farming system for people who live around the mountains with uneven and sloping land. The writing of this article aims to describe a farming system in Central Java society called 'Nyabuk Gunung', namely how to grow crops by making rice terraces formed according to contour lines. The research method used in this research is to use a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques of literature studies, field observations and farmer interviews. Literature study is a method used to collect data or sources related to the topics raised in a study. The results of this study indicate that the Nyabuk Gunung farming system was created by the surrounding community in addition to utilizing existing land, also to prevent erosion and landslides on their land. Plants planted by the community in the form of suitable plantation crops are located in the highlands, such as tea, coffee and other vegetable crops. The Nyabuk Gunung farming system can be a solution for agriculture in the Central Java region which has mountainous topography as land conversion and prevents natural disasters such as landslides.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE KARTINI FILM ON GENDER EQUALITY PERSPECTIVES: A CASE STUDY OF ADOLESCENTS AT SMAN 24 CENTRAL JAKARTA

In Javanese society, women are traditionally expected to embody qualities like gentleness, obedience, and loyalty. Indonesian culture dictates specific roles for men and women, with men typically occupying public spaces and women confined to domestic spaces. The film Kartini represents a modern resistance against patriarchal norms by showcasing women's equal capabilities and potential contributions in various sectors, challenging societal expectations. By portraying women as equally capable in domestic and public spheres, the film challenges the prevailing patriarchal culture in Indonesian society. The main focus of the current study will be to focus on the Kartini film in knowing the effect it produces on the perspective of gender equality. This research will be useful based on two aspects, namely academic benefits and practical benefits. The expected practical benefit is that the results of this study can be useful for students to change their perspective on gender equality, and academic benefits can also be taken, namely to make this research as a basis for students if they will conduct research that is in line with this discussion. In the context of the current research using quantitative methods by involving active respondents from SMAN 24 Jakarta students. The data collection process uses a questionnaire distributed through the Google Forms link and then processed using a simple linear analysis technique. The results showed that the Kartini film had a significant influence on the Gender Equality Perspective of Adolescents at SMAN 24 Jakarta.

Struktur Sintaksis dan Makna Semantik Ungkapan Tradisional sebagai Representasi Masyarakat Jawa

This article aimed at describing syntactic structures and semantic meanings in Javanese traditional expressions that represent Javanese local wisdoms. The local wisdoms that were reflected in the Javanese traditional expressions were traditions and noble values used by Javanese society as life patrone managing the community behavior in the context of social and spiritual life. The Javanese traditional expressions were part of culture as they were formed from ideas, behaviors, and works of the Javanese society. Traditional expressions were rapidly growing among the community as advice, thoughts, and educations in life. The Javanese traditional expressions could be in the form of “bebasan”, “sanepa”, “pepindhan”, “saloka”, and “paribasan”. Data of this study were phrases, clauses, and sentences covered by the Javanese traditional expressions. The data of this research were taken from Kamus Ungkapan Bahasa Jawa 1990 released by the Department of Education and Culture, the Republic of Indonesia. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. While the collected data were analyzed by using syntactic and semantic approaches. Findings of this study inferred that the language structures that construct the Javanese traditional expressions were in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences. In addition, the semantic meanings contained in the Javanese traditional expressions represented the common characteristics and the behaviors of Javanese society.

Serat gumuyu: Sumber pengaruh untuk membentuk persepsi kebahagiaan dan kesehatan mental masyarakat

The manuscript is one of the cultural relics of the past which is a source of cultural institutions of the community. The manuscript is also used as a reflection of local wisdom and a foundation for oral traditions, art, and Javanese values, as is the case with the Serat Gumuyu script. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to obtain complete information about laughter can shape the perception of each individual to manage a more positive mindset so as to form happiness and improve people's mental health from Serat Gumuyu. The theory used is Seligman's mental health theory, which focuses on the psychological aspects of mental health and which focuses on positive psychological theories, especially happiness. This research data is in the form of quotes derived from Serat Gumuyu. The source of this research data is Serat Gumuyu, serial number NB 1567 code obtained from manuscripts in the collection of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. The data collection method uses content analysis techniques to describe the manuscript, editing and transliteration. The text is hermeniutic analyzed by Ricoeur to explore the axis of the roots of cultural forces socially and mental health in Javanese society. This research presents how laughter in Serat Gumuyu contains the benefits and factors that make someone laugh. This serat invites us that the positive influence of laughter can provide many benefits and is not visible physically but in human mental health also becomes better and optimal. Kedampingan Hewan Penghela pada Industri Gula di Jawa Abad XX

This research discusses the relationship of draft animals and humans in Java has been historically intertwined, reaching a turning point at the end of the 19th century. This period saw the initiation of various industries, especially sugar factory, ethical awareness regarding the welfare of animals, as well as a collective awareness of the identity of a new of Indonesian society and workers. Consequently, the concept of human-animal relationship periodically undergoes changes to harmonize with the new world order. As a result, the values of human-animal relationship, and especially humans with nature, are now characterized by relationships that are always based on transactional relations. This results in the dissolution of the identity of Javanese society, which has a close relationship with nature and animals in line with the concept of “underworld and upperworld”. This article uses historical method with the approachment of environmental history. The primary sources for this article are contemporaneous newspapers, PG Gondang Baru’s 1958 Annual Report, and other documents in the form of contemporaneous photographs, complemented by other secondary references.

Javanese Inheritance Traditions Seen from Islamic Inheritance Law and Inheritance Law

The tradition of inheritance of Javanese people has a peculiarity that combines Islamic values and local customs. Allah Almighty in the Qur'an regulates and explains in detail about the division of inheritance, as in QS: An-Nisa verses 7-12, verses 33 and verse 176. Allah the Just does not neglect and does not neglect the rights of every heir with very clear and perfect rules. God determines the rights of every heir with justice and wisdom. Because wealth is a milestone enforcer of life for both individuals and community groups. This study aims to analyze the inheritance tradition of Javanese society in the perspective of Islamic Inheritance Law and Customary Inheritance Law. The Javanese tradition of inheritance has several main principles, namely: a) Equality: All children are entitled to receive inheritance, both male and female, b) Wisdom: Heirs can give more inheritance to certain children based on certain considerations, such as needs, achievements, or filial piety, c) Deliberation: The distribution of inheritance is carried out by consensus between heirs. The Javanese tradition of inheritance is basically in line with Islamic Inheritance Law, although there are some differences in the technicalities of inheritance distribution. This research uses normative research methods by conducting a positive legal approach to laws and regulations and case studies using qualitative data types. The data sources used are secondary data obtained from sources in the form of official documents, books, journals, the internet and other sources related to this research. This study recommends that socialization and education be carried out to the Javanese people about Islamic Inheritance Law and Customary Inheritance Law to avoid disputes in inheritance.

REVEALING JAVANESE TRADITIONAL ORCHESTRA SONGS MEANING DURING THE VILLAGE PURIFYING RITUAL 'NYADRAN'

Indonesia, as a multicultural country, has many indigenous cultures; one of those cultures is the village purifying ritual usually held by Javanese society. This study investigates the relationship between the Javanese traditional orchestra songs meaning and the village purifying ritual in Sonoageng Village, Nganjuk Regency. This study employs the descriptive qualitative method with a narratological approach. The results show a relationship between the implicit meaning of analyzed gendhing and the village purifying ritual.

PERSEPSI GURU TERHADAP INTEGRASI PELESTARIAN LINGKUNGAN HIDUP DALAM KURIKULUM MUATAN LOKAL BAHASA JAWA

The integration of environmental preservation in the local Javanese content curriculum is expected to be able to collaborate two fields of science which will later provide mutual benefits. The aim of this research is to find out and analyze teachers' perceptions of the integration of environmental conservation in the local Javanese curriculum. This research methode uses a quantitative approach with survey methods. The population of this research is Javanese language teachers at middle and high school levels spread across the provinces of East Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta. The sample in this research was 40 teachers taken using accidental sampling technique. The survey in this research used a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The data in this research will be analyzed using descriptive statistics consisting of min, max, mean, standard deviation and variance with the help of SPSS 25. The results of the research show that overall teachers have a positive perception of the integration of environmental conservation in the local Javanese content curriculum. Teachers are aware of the positive benefits that students can experience from this integration. Apart from that, it needs to be emphasized that the choice of learning methods, approaches and assessments must remain adapted to the values and cultural characteristics of Javanese society.

Misi Bagi Pertumbuhan Gereja Melalui Kontekstualisasi Praktik Ibadah Penghiburan Dalam Tradisi Slametan Di Masyarakat Jawa

Abstract: This article aims to explain the importance of contextualizing the practice of consolation worship in the slametan tradition in Javanese society as one of the church's missions for church growth. Slametan is a Javanese tradition that involves ceremonial offerings of food to ancestors and gods as a form of spiritual honor and respect. In the context of the church, the practice of consolation worship can be an effective means of connecting with the Javanese community and strengthening the relationship between the church and the community. To achieve the objectives and discussion, the researcher used a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through literature study, direct observation, interviews with church leaders and Javanese community members, as well as content analysis of relevant sources. Data analysis was conducted to identify challenges and opportunities in contextualizing the practice of consolation worship in the slametan tradition. The results show that contextualizing the practice of consolation worship in the slametan tradition can produce a positive impact on church growth, strengthen relationships with Javanese communities, and provide relevant and meaningful pastoral care. Contextualization helps the church to build an inclusive community, where Javanese people feel valued, recognized, and accepted in the context of their faith. This research can also contribute to the importance of contextualizing the practice of consolation worship in the slametan tradition in Javanese society as one of the church's missions for dynamic church growth.
