Acrylic resins for manufacturing dental prosthetic restorations – microstructural, micromechanical and tribological tests
  • Jun 23, 2025
  • Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences Technical Sciences
  • Łukasz Bojko + 3 more

When planning and manufacturing a removable dental prosthesis, efforts should be made to optimally distribute pressure without exceeding the threshold of the physiological capacity of tissues, especially since this type of restoration often causes prosthetic stomatopathies and atrophy of the bone substrate. The aim is to evaluate acrylic prosthetic structures in terms of microstructure, micromechanical parameters, resistance to movement in sliding friction, and wear resistance in the environment of physiological saline and artificial saliva. The research material includes removable prosthetic restorations made of acrylic resins manufactured in the Materials Science Laboratory at the Department of Dental Prosthetics of the Jagiellonian University Medical College. The clinical functionality of the restoration consists of adapting to individual biomechanical forces and creating the most favorable conditions for proper occlusion. Microstructure tests allowed the identification of the surface layer in wear defects and indicated the Vertex Rapid Simplified material as the least susceptible to internal defects and cracks, which may constitute potential places for the growth of fungi and bacteria. Micromechanical tests showed similar values of microhardness and longitudinal elastic moduli of the biomaterials tested. They may determine the strength and extent of the plate. Premacryl Plus had different and lower micromechanical parameters. Tribological tests facilitated a positive assessment of the effect of saliva on friction coefficients and forces. Reducing its value protects the tissues of the prosthetic base against the irritating effects of forces generated by the restoration under chewing and occlusion conditions.

Excited Electron Production at the SPPC-based \(ep\) Colliders via Contact Interactions
  • Jun 23, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B
  • A Caliskan

If a linear electron accelerator is installed into the SPPC (Super Proton–Proton Collider) complex, \(ep\) collision options will be available in addition to \(pp\) collisions. We consider the production of excited electrons with spin-1/2 at the future SPPC-based electron–proton colliders with center-of-mass energies of \(8.44\), \(11.66\), \(26.68\), and \(36.88\) TeV. In the \(ep\rightarrow e^{\star }X\rightarrow e\gamma X\) signal process, excited electrons are produced by contact interactions and decay into the photon channel by gauge interactions. Taking into account the corresponding background process, the pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the final-state particles are plotted. We reported on the discovery, observation, and exclusion mass limits of excited electrons by applying appropriate kinematical cuts best suited for amplifying the signal of the excited electron signature. We also investigated the highest achievable values of the compositeness scale for the discovery of excited electrons at these colliders. • Jerzy Hohendorff + 5 more

Introduction and Objective: CGM systems may support glucose control in patients in cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). We aimed to assess the accuracy, feasibility and tolerability of Dexcom One+ against standard blood glucose measurements. Methods: From September to December 2024, we included patients with known diabetes or hyperglycemia at admission >140 mg/dl hospitalized in the CICU due to acute coronary syndrome and/or heart failure. The accuracy was assessed by the mean absolute relative difference (MARD). Clinical performance was assessed using Consensus Error Grid (CEG) analysis. Feasibility outcome included number of early sensor detachment and sensor failure. Safety outcomes included skin reactions. Results: We obtained 567 paired samples from 27 patients (15 males), aged 72.3 ± 11.4 years. Among participants there were 22 patients with previously diagnosed T2DM. The mean HbA1c was 7.3 ± 1.4%. Overall, 419 paired samples were obtained during oxygen therapy, while 199 during vasopressor infusion. CGM use duration was 4.4 ± 3.2 days. The were 2 reference readings <70 mg/dl, 352 within 70-180 mg/dl range, and 213 >180 mg/dl. Overall MARD was 12.3%. Clinical accuracy is summarized in Table 1. We observed 1 mild hematoma at insertion site, 1 sensor failure and 2 early detachments. Conclusion: In patients in CICU Dexcom One+ demonstrated acceptable accuracy and could facilitate glucose monitoring. Disclosure J. Hohendorff: None. B. Zawislak: None. M. Bagienski: None. M.M. Role of Neutron and Proton Systems in the Entropy of \(^{210,211}\mathrm {Po}\)
  • Jun 9, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B
  • A Abyar + 2 more

The intrinsic level densities and entropies of \(^{210}\)Po and \(^{211}\)Po nuclei have been extracted within the BCS theory that includes pairing interaction. Then, total level density considering the collective effects is obtained. The results agree well with the recent data obtained from experimental-level densities for the considered nuclei. In addition, the entropy excess of \(^{211}\)Po compared to \(^{210}\)Po has been extracted. Also, the entropy excess ratio, which was introduced in our previous publications, has been calculated as a function of temperature for the neutrons and protons. The neutron system plays a major role in the entropy excess of \(^{211}\)Po at low temperatures. Abstract Published by the Jagiellonian University 2025 authors

μPPET: Investigating the Muon Puzzle with J-PET Detectors
  • Jun 2, 2025
  • Universe
  • Alessio Porcelli + 41 more

The μPPET [mu(μ)on Probe with J-PET] project aims to investigate the “Muon Puzzle” seen in cosmic ray air showers. This puzzle arises from the observation of a significantly larger number of muons on Earth’s surface than that predicted by the current theoretical models. The investigated hypothesis is based on recently observed asymmetries in the parameters for the strong interaction cross-section and trajectory of an outgoing particle due to projectile–target polarization. The measurements require detailed information about muons at the ground level, including their track and charge distributions. To achieve this, the two PET scanners developed at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland), the J-PET detectors, will be employed, taking advantage of their well-known resolution and convenient location for detecting muons that reach long depths in the atmosphere. One station will be used as a muon tracker, while the second will reconstruct the core of the air shower. In parallel, the existing hadronic interaction models will be modified and fine-tuned based on the experimental results. In this work, we present the conceptualization and preliminary designs of μPPET.

Application of the Riemann–Hilbert Approach and \(N\)-soliton Solutions for the Generalized Fokas–Lenells Equation
  • May 30, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B
  • Y Zhao + 1 more

This paper investigates the generalized Fokas–Lenells equation by the Riemann–Hilbert approach. A gauge transformation is introduced to symmetrize the originally asymmetric spectral problem. A novel Riemann–Hilbert method is developed for the generalized Fokas–Lenells equation, performing spectral analysis on the temporal component of the Lax pair rather than the spatial part. \(N\)-soliton solutions are rigorously derived by solving the Riemann–Hilbert problem with this complex spectral symmetry. Additionally, the dynamics of the one and two solitons of the generalized Fokas–Lenells equation are discussed. Abstract Published by the Jagiellonian University 2025 authors

Introduction. This study examines students’ use of ChatGPT for information retrieval and creative tasks, integrating AI literacy into library and information science (LIS) models and addressing gaps in AI-mediated processes and ethics. Method. A literature review and case study of 84 Jagiellonian University students, submitting 72 tasks, analysed transcripts, evaluations and authorship attributions. Analysis. Thematic analysis revealed eleven themes, including motivations, ethical issues, iterative strategies and AI literacy gaps. Strategies aligned with LIS models like berrypicking but exposed training deficiencies. Results. Most students (78%) claimed sole authorship; 18% cited co-authorship. Key strategies included iterative refinement (69%) and exploratory dialogues (67%). Outputs highlighted usefulness (82%), confidence (54%) and concerns over biases and authorship. Conclusions. Curricula must incorporate AI-specific competencies, such as prompt engineering, to promote ethical AI engagement. Future research should adapt frameworks like AUTOMAT and assess long-term AI literacy outcomes.

  • K Dimitrova

The PADME experiment at Laboratori Nationali di Frascati is designed to study possible dark matter explanations relying on the presence of a light particle that acts as a mediator between the visible and the hidden sectors. Three data-taking runs have resulted in the collection of more than \(10^{13}\) positrons-on-target. The experimental setup was initially designed to the search for associate dark photon production and later modified for the search for resonant production of a new \(X17\) particle, originally proposed by the ATOMKI Institute. The setup for the different runs, the data taking, and background studies are presented, as well as the first physics results and the prospects for the next run of PADME. Exclusive Production of \(\eta \) Meson in Proton–Proton Collisions at FAIR Energies
  • May 12, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B Proceedings Supplement
  • P Lebiedowicz

We discuss the exclusive production of \(\eta \) meson in proton–proton collisions in order to learn about the relevant production mechanism at the GSI-FAIR energies. The nucleon and baryonic-resonance amplitudes are derived within an effective Lagrangian approach. Assuming that for the \(pp \to pp \eta \) reaction the dominant contribution is due to an excitation of \(N(1535)\) via the \(\rho ^{0}\) exchange, the present model reproduces data for both total and differential cross sections, for instance, the distributions of the polar angle of the \(\eta \) meson in the center-of-mass system. The role of vector-meson-fusion processes \(\omega \omega , \rho ^{0} \rho ^{0} \to \eta \) is specified. Comparisons with currently existing data from the DISTO and HADES experiments are made, and predictions for higher energies (HADES, PANDA, SIS100) are given. The performance of the kinematic fit analysis tool (<span class="sf">KinFit</span>) has been tested in reconstructing the \(\eta /\omega \) mesons in the simulated data of \(pp \rightarrow pp\eta /\omega \ (\rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0})\) reactions at \(\sqrt {s} = 3.46\) GeV with a missing mass constraint. For the fitting procedure, the detector resolutions were calculated based on the simulations, and the goodness of fit was studied. The results show a significant improvement in the mass resolution and the mesons mass values. Abstract Published by the Jagiellonian University 2025 authors

We discuss the role of gluon dynamics in \(\eta '\) physics and in nucleon resonances where excitations of gluonic potentials may also be important. Interesting phenomenology includes a possible narrow near-threshold resonance in \(\eta '\) photoproduction and whether the parity doublets observed in the higher-mass nucleon resonance spectrum might be hinting at a possible second minimum in the confinement potential corresponding to supercritical confinement. The JEF program aims at performing precision measurements of various \(\eta \) and \(\eta ^{\prime }\) decays with emphasis on rare neutral decays. Since the production rates of \(\eta \) and \(\eta ^{\prime }\) are similar under the JEF experimental conditions, the same data set will offer sensitive probes for decay modes. Compared to the existing and planned \(\eta \)/\(\eta ^{\prime }\) experiments worldwide, the unique feature of the JEF program is to offer a clean data set in the rare neutral decays of both \(\eta \) and \(\eta ^{\prime }\) with a significant reduction in background. Experiments to Detect the Hypothetical X17 Particle

Recently, when examining the differential internal pair creation coefficients of \(^8\)Be, \(^4\)He, and \(^{12}\)C nuclei, we observed peak-like anomalies in the angular correlation of the \(e^+e^-\) pairs. This was interpreted as the creation and immediate decay of an intermediate bosonic particle with a mass of \(m_{X}c^2\approx 17\) MeV, receiving the name X17 in subsequent publications. In this paper, I will give a mini-review of the experiments related to X17 the results of which are already published, and the ones closest to being published. Investigation of the Exclusive \(pp \rightarrow ppKK\) Process Using Data Collected by HADES
  • May 12, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B Proceedings Supplement
  • V Kladov + 2 more

This study presents the exclusive analysis of the \(pp\rightarrow ppK^{+}K^{-}\) reaction with data taken with the HADES detector in February 2022 at a center-of-mass energy of 3.47 GeV. A neural network-based particle identification was developed that compensates for simulation-experiment discrepancies through domain adversarial technique. The background was suppressed by means of kinematic refit with 4 overconstraints corresponding to the conservation of 4-momentum, which allowed us to obtain a high-purity sample of data with \(S/B\approx 15\). Clear signals from \(\phi (1020) \to K^{+}K^{-}\) and \({\mit \Lambda }(1520) \to pK^{-}\) decays were observed with their parameters consistent with those published by the PDG. Moreover, the importance of \(K^{+}K^{-}\) non-resonant final-state interactions was confirmed. This paper discusses the details of our event selection, efficiency corrections, and presents a number of intermediate results. Abstract Published by the Jagiellonian University 2025 authors

The REDTOP Experiment: an \(\eta /\eta ^{\prime }\) Factory to Explore Dark Matter and Physics Beyond the Standard Model
  • May 12, 2025
  • Acta Physica Polonica B Proceedings Supplement
  • M Zieliński + 1 more

The REDTOP experiment is a proposed super-\(\eta \)/\(\eta '\) factory aimed at exploring physics beyond the Standard Model in the MeV–GeV range and rare \(\eta \)/\(\eta '\) meson decays. With projected production rates exceeding \(10^{13}\) \(\eta \)/year and \(10^{12}\) \(\eta '\)/year, REDTOP will enable studies of symmetry violations and all four portals to the dark sector. preliminary studies show sensitivity, which could open a broad possibility for exploring New Physics and contribute to a deeper understanding of fundamental interactions within the Standard Model. Such high-statistics experiments and the required sensitivity can only be achieved with a high-intensity proton or pion beam, available at several accelerator facilities worldwide. This article discusses the physics potential of the REDTOP experiment, the detector design, and the future beam requirements. Abstract Published by the Jagiellonian University 2025 authors

A Tough Man: Biographical Sketch of the Peasants’ Movement Activist Edward Kaleta(1913-2000) The article is about Edward Kaleta, a lawyer and politician, who in 1933 became a member of the Peasants’ Party (Stronnictwo Ludowe – SL), a party of Polish farmers, active in the Second Polish Republic. During World War II, under the German occupation, he was the SL’s Silesian representative in the underground Political Consultative Committee at the Government Delegation for Poland (a secret structure of the Polish Government in Exile in London). Kaleta then served as head of the office of the Regional Delegation of the Government in Exile in Krakow. After the war, he became a member of the Supreme Executive Committee of the Polish Peasants’ Party, the only political group in opposition to the communist authorities installed in Poland by the Soviet Union, led by Stanisław Mikołajczyk. During this time, he was arrested several times by the communist security apparatus. In the 1970s, he supported the activities of the Student Solidarity Committee, an anti-regime organisation established after the death of Stanisław Pyjas. The article is based on, among other sources, archival materials collected at the Archives of the Institute of National Remembrance in Krakow, the Archives of the Jagiellonian University, the Museum of the History of the Polish Peasant Movement, and the Wincenty Witos Museum in Wierzchosławice.
