IN German technical literature there are excellent exhaustive treatises on the metallurgy of iron, and students' manuals exite in abundance, but Mr. Simmershach's work on the economics of the iron trade opens up an entirely new field. The leading principles and practices of the German iron trade are made clear and a careful study of the information set forth cannot fail to prevent much waste of time and misapplication of energy in the conduct of business. The various chapters are well worthy of attentive study, and the book should find a place in the library of all who have any connection with the iron industry.

SIR BERNHARD SAMUELSON, F.R.S., who died on May 10 in his eighty-fifth year, will be remembered as one of the pioneers of the Cleveland iron trade, and a strenuous advocate of technical education. He exerted a great and formative influence upon an industry which owes its progress largely to the application of scientific methods, and the extension of facilities for technical education is largely due to his efforts.

IN France, as in the rest of Europe, consumers have during the past winter been complaining of the difficulty of obtaining an adequate supply of coal, the chief cause of the increased demand having been the activity in the iron and steel trades. At the same time, prolonged strikes in Austria and elsewhere, and the temporary cessation of the production of the collieries of Natal and Cape Colony, have lessened the supplies usually available. The prevailing scarcity of coal is a matter of serious moment to France, where, owing to the increasing depth of the collieries and the costly nature of mining operations, the quantity of coal that has to be imported from other countries grows larger every year. At the present time about two-thirds of the coal consumed in France is raised in the country; and last year the imports amounted to 10,500,000 tons, of which quantity 6,000,000 tons were obtained from Great Britain. France being so largely dependent on Great Britain, it will readily be seen that the duration of the British coal-fields is a subject of no little importance to French economists. M. Loze has, therefore, been induced to devote two bulky volumes, covering together 1229 pages, to a critical consideration of the investigations of Prof. Stanley Jevons, the Right Hon. Leonard H. Our coal resources

The subject of this paper formed the chief topic of the address of Sir William (now Lord) Armstrong, when the British Association met at Newcastle-on-Tyne in the year 1863. Since then a quarter of a century has elapsed, manufactures and commercial undertakings have progressed by leaps and bounds, and, concurrently, coal-mining has been developed to an extent much beyond the anticipations of many who looked at that time with some anxiety on the rapid increase of coal-consumption, especially in some districts of more than ordinary commercial activity. At that time the recent discoveries of extensive deposits of Liassic iron ore in the North Riding of Yorkshire, in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and Oxfordshire, together with those of the richer haematites of North Lancashire and Cumberland, had given a powerful impulse to the manufacture of iron; and this was sustained by the gradual substitution of iron for wood in ship-building and other arts. The quantity of pig-iron smelted in the British Isles at the beginning of the century was only about 200,000 tons; in a quarter of a century (1825) the estimated amount (as given by the late Professor Jevons) was 581,000 tons; in 1854 the production of pig-iron had reached 3,069,838 tons; and in 1863, the year of the previous meeting of the Association at Newcastle, the production had reached 4,510,041 tons; a development largely due to the great expansion of the iron trade on the banks of the Tees. The Iron and Steel Institute

THE annual autumn or country meeting of this Association was held last week at Liverpool, in the concert room of St. George's Hall, the proceedings being opened with a few hearty words of welcome from the Mayor. The report of council showed that the institution continued to flourish in spite of the hard times in the trade, fifty-eight new members having been added to the list on the last ballot and the proposal papers of thirty-eight received. The President then announced that the Council had accepted an invitation, numerously signed by representative firms in the iron trade of Westphalia to hold the autumn meeting of 1880 at Düsseldorf, which proposal was unanimously confirmed by the meeting.
