Physical health of Post-9/11 U.S. Military veterans in the context of Healthy People 2020 targeted topic areas: Results from the Comparative Health Assessment Interview Research Study

Large-scale epidemiological studies suggest that veterans may have poorer physical health than nonveterans, but this has been largely unexamined in post-9/11 veterans despite research indicating their high levels of disability and healthcare utilization. Additionally, little investigation has been conducted on sex-based differences and interactions by veteran status. Notably, few studies have explored veteran physical health in relation to national health guidelines. Self-reported, weighted data were analyzed on post-9/11 U.S. veterans and nonveterans (n = 19,693; 6,992 women, 12,701 men; 15,160 veterans, 4,533 nonveterans). Prevalence was estimated for 24 physical health conditions classified by Healthy People 2020 targeted topic areas. Associations between physical health outcomes and veteran status were evaluated using bivariable and multivariable analyses. Back/neck pain was most reported by veterans (49.3 %), twice that of nonveterans (22.8 %)(p < 0.001). Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) for musculoskeletal and hearing disorders, traumatic brain injury, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) were 3–6 times higher in veterans versus nonveterans (p < 0.001). Women versus men had the greatest adjusted odds for bladder infections (males:females, AOR = 0.08, 95 % CI:0.04–0.18)(p < 0.001), and greater odds than men for multiple sclerosis, CFS, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome/colitis, respiratory disease, some musculoskeletal disorders, and vision loss (p < 0.05). Cardiovascular-related conditions were most prominent for men (p < 0.001). Veteran status by sex interactions were found for obesity (p < 0.03; greater for male veterans) and migraine (p < 0.01; greater for females). Healthy People 2020 targeted topic areas exclude some important physical health conditions that are associated with being a veteran. National health guidelines for Americans should provide greater consideration of veterans in their design.

Nonviolence and Catholic school sport: recommendations for supporting mission as drawn from a historical case study

For centuries, Catholic schools have promoted extra-curricular activity as a means to develop well-rounded students. Sports programming has been a vital aspect of this work, but there is little research into how these programmes can support the combined educational-religious missions of the schools. In response, this paper relies on archival and interview research to present a historical case study of Canadian coach-educator Father David Bauer, who spent his lifetime as a Basilian priest educating through sport in the face of its violent tendencies. We discuss how Bauer, as an educator and prominent international figure in ice hockey, identified difficulties arising from violence over several decades. Influenced by his military experience and his religious community’s educational charism, we see how Bauer drew from a Basilian intellectual tradition and other experiences to push back against several types of violence arising in sport: physical, psychological, structural, media-driven, and others. The paper concludes with seven recommendations of nonviolence for Catholic school sports programmes, where leaders can learn from Bauer’s story and enable programmes of human development and bridge-building, and thereby, positively enhance school mission.

“You get past the packaging”: young women smokers’ resistance to standardized cigarette packaging

ABSTRACT We examined how young women construct and experience plain tobacco packaging. Forty-one Australian young women who are current smokers took part in this qualitative interview research. Data was analyzed using constructivist grounded theory, with the core category about the strategic ways young women resist plain tobacco packaging. The majority of women reported that plain packaging was unappealing and that the larger health warnings were shocking and offensive. However, almost all reported being desensitized to the graphic health warnings. The graphic warnings were seen as “fake” or lacking in credibility, and irrelevant to the women’s life stage. Importantly, the majority of women engaged in practices to strategically resist and avoid health warnings on the packs as a way to continue smoking. Our findings point to the need to develop health warnings on tobacco products that are gender specific and focus on proximal social consequences to increase salience for young women smokers.

Adults’ ad hoc practices in interviews with children - Ethical considerations in the context of adultness and generational ordering

The paper reflects on researchers’ adultness in the context of two central motifs that accompany interview research with children, “ascertaining children’s perspectives” and “meeting research objectives (the researcher’s objectives)”. Sequential re-analysis of conflictual interview sequences reveals “ad hoc practices” in which researchers (re)produce adultness and generational orders. Reflection on such practices in connection with ‘turning points’ in adult actions may assist in fine-tuning the appositeness in the approach to interviews with children and helping researchers advance their individual research skills.

Preliminary Study on Waste Incineration and Electricity Conversion in Macau

Under the rapid development of the city, our city also produces a large amount of garbage, including ordinary household garbage, construction waste, and hazardous waste. Macau is a small area. If the domestic landfill method is adopted, the land area occupied by it will be the same as the land area of the entire Macau Peninsula. Therefore, as early as the mid-1980s, Macau established a waste treatment mode based on incineration and landfill supplementation. Since the waste incineration center’s completion in 1992, it has received three pieces of garbage with international advanced levels. In the treatment line, the exhaust gas reached the current EU emission standards. With the advocacy of the concept of eco-city construction, Macau’s urban waste treatment has also added a number of sustainable development measures, such as waste incineration, the production of fertilizer, and the recycling of household food waste. Based on field investigation and interview research, this study finally puts forward corresponding suggestions for the predicament of waste incineration in Macau.

METHODS MATTER: LEARNING FROM INSTITUTIONAL ETHNOGRAPHY AND INTERSECTIONALITY TO INFORM INTERVIEW RESEARCH METHODS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN STEM EDUCATION

In this methodological paper, I share methodological developments within an institutional ethnography (IE) guided by intersectionality. I argue both theories and methods that address how institutions operate through discourses of gender, race, and class inequity, which need to be used to guide interview research for pursuing equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Drawing on a political commitment to social justice foundational to intersectionality to guide the work, I detail methodological development for interview-based STEM social justice research. I describe how I developed interview methods on entry-level data by drawing on tools of storytelling, a post-interview reflection guide, and the Listening Guide. I reflect on how I adapted these tools for use in an IE to investigate the experiences of women who were parenting while pursuing STEMPhDs. Developing methods with theory was found to be generative for examining researcher and participant relationships, as was drawing on narrative approaches for greater examination of these relationships. Rather than presenting the work as settled, this paper grapples with the commitment and self-reflection needed in interpretative research with a social justice aim. Implications are shared for early career researchers and others who are interested in interview research for equity in STEM education.

Cash Transfer Program and Socio-Economic Empowerment. A Study on Communities in Dadaab Refugee Complex, Kenya

Decent work and economic growth is outlined as one of the seventeen sustainable development goals which is framed on ensuring that all the individuals in the world as a whole are socio-economically empowered irrespective of their status or their countries as outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. Cash transfers programs are proven to be a powerful poverty-reduction instrument, with positive impacts on poverty, dietary diversity, school attendance, investment in productive assets, child labor and empowerment indicators. The study purposed to establish the effect of cash transfer program on socio-economic empowerment of communities in Dadaab refugee complex, Kenya. The study objectives were: to examine the influence of funding of cash transfer program on socio-economic empowerment, to examine the influence of governance of cash transfer program on socio-economic empowerment, to examine the influence of needs assessment on recipients transfer program on socio-economic empowerment and to examine the influence of monitoring and evaluation of cash transfer program on socio-economic empowerment of communities in Dadaab refugee complex, Kenya. The study adopted universalism theory and theory of change and cash transfer programs to underpin this study. The research design used was descriptive survey design. The study targeted a population of 27,285 comprising of cash transfer officers, key informants and refugee households. A sample size of 427 of the respondents was carefully selected using probability sampling. The research relied on interview guides and research questionnaires as tools for data collection which were subjected to reliability and validity tests to ensure they achieved the recommended status before they were used in the actual study. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, standard deviations and means and also inferential analysis such as Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The study established that established that there was positive relationship between funding of cash transfer program and socio-economic empowerment, there was positive relationship between governance of cash transfer program and socio-economic empowerment, there was positive correlation between needs assessment and socio-economic empowerment. Lastly, the study revealed that there was positive relationship between monitoring and evaluation of cash transfer program and socio-economic empowerment. The study concluded that both funding of cash transfer programs, governance of cash transfer programs, needs assessment on recipients and monitoring and evaluation of cash transfer programs had positive and significant effect on socio-economic empowerment of communities in Dadaab refugee complex. The study recommends that there is need to ensure that more stakeholders are brought to board so as to ensure funding is well achieved and that the organizations have adequate funds to reach all the refugees that may be needy. The stakeholders should also come up with various strategies and programs to ensure the beneficiaries are educated on financial literacy as well as providing coaching and mentorship to apply in the various economic activities that promote economic empowerment. There is also need to ensure that more professionals are engaged by the support groups to ensure that there is proper governance and that the cash transfers only reach the intended and needy beneficiaries. Finally, the study recommends that through monitoring and evaluation of cash transfer programs, the support groups should ensure that any shortcomings that may result from the programs are quickly traced and proper correction measures undertaken for the benefit of the beneficiaries. The intention of this article is also for resource mobilization for refugees in Dadaab refugee camp, Kenya, as well as for other marginalized communities in the world.

Implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation in Romania: problems, perspectives, solutions

In the context of the accelerated development of new technologies and the evolution of artificial intelligence programs, in the context of more and more discussions related to the digitization of public services, interoperability, cross-border data transfer, Big Data, fake news, deep fake, hybrid warfare and cyberattacks we must admit that it is necessary to find quickly solutions to give to all data subjects the right to have control over their personal data. Legislative solutions are not enough. Can a state, through a correct, coherent, constant information of citizens and their institutionalized training in the field of privacy protection to reach through prevention, to ensure effective protection of personal data? Using comparative analysis as a research method, we have identified good practices of implementing GDPR in several European countries. The results obtained through the analysis of the data collected by the open-ended questionnaire and the interview research methods revealed to us the real needs of the Romanian citizens. Having good practices models for implementing GDPR in several European countries and the real needs of the population regarding the data protection field, we aim to provide solutions to improve the implementation of the GDPR in Romania.

Planejamento e Governança para Metrópoles Resilientes no Brasil e na Alemanha - Arranjos para Ação Coletiva Institucional

Abstract Metropolises are a fundamental characteristic of the 21st century due to the unprecedented urbanization that has seen cities transcend their traditional boundaries. At the heart of the metropolitan question, there is the need for collective decisions and coordinated joint action in a territory characterized by the existence of multiple governments and social actors with different interests, preferences, and resources. Consequently, new institutional arrangements for metropolitan management have continued to evolve aiming to overcome the dilemma of collective action. In this article, we present some principal findings of a study that examines the institutional arrangements of metropolitan governance in the metropolises of Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte (Brazil), as well as Stuttgart and Hannover (Germany), based on the institutional collective action framework. The research is based on the analysis of the relevant literature, reports, secondary studies, and the conduction of a semi-structured panel interview researchers, revealing varied vertical and horizontal cooperation arrangements, the strengths and weaknesses of their institutional design, and contextual factors that have shaped the governance and planning structures and the possibilities of resilient metropolitan development. The article concludes with some recommendations for the implementation of institutional arrangements at the metropolitan scale for emerging metropolises, particularly in the Global South.

Communication Lapses in the Adoption of Improved Cook Stoves in Kenya

The effective improved cook stoves have been designed to offer environmental, socio-economic and health benefits that facilitates the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. However, there is low adoption of effective improved cook stoves among the rural populations in Kenya. This study therefore sought to analyse communication lapses in the adoption of improved cook stoves in Kenya. The Research Questions of the study is: What are the communication lapses in the adoption of the improved cook-stoves in Uasin Gishu County? The study was anchored on Constructivist Paradigm and Qualitative research approach was adopted for the study. The study is a case study of Uasin Gishu County in Kenya. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 20 respondents for the study and the Qualitative data was collected using interviews research instruments. Thematic data analysis was used to analyse data qualitatively. The collected data was presented in the form of narratives. From the study findings, the study concludes that communication lapses have led to the low adoption of improved cook-stoves. There is limited use of Participatory communication strategies and media channels have not been utilised adequately to sensitise the rural populations on the health, environmental and socio-economic benefits of improved cook-stoves. It is anticipated that the study will be significant in emphasising the importance of using effective communication strategies to educate, create awareness and campaign for the adoption of improved cook-stoves and thus lead to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

The Construction and Application of an Automatic Scoring System for English Writing

This article utilizes big data technology to design an automatic scoring system for English writing. The research of this thesis specifically answers the following questions: (1) whether the automatic scoring system can effectively improve university student' English writing ability. Which is better to use only traditional teacher feedback or a combination of automatic scoring system and teachers in English teaching feedback? (2) How does the automatic scoring system affect university student? (3) Do students prefer teacher feedback or a combination of automatic scoring system and teacher feedback? Through pre-test and post test, pre-test and post test questionnaires, and interview research methods, the experiment analyzes the impact and changes of writing feedback teaching combined with automatic scoring system and teachers on students' writing learning. In the process of the experiment, two classes of university were selected as the objects of the experiment. The experimental results show that 93% of the students in class A and 92% of the students in class B scored above 90 points at ordinary times. The two data values are similar. The students in both classes have a certain English foundation and the English foundation is similar. More than half of the students can well understand the writing feedback provided by the website. Most of the students held a positive attitude towards the feedback of the automatic scoring system to promote writing revision. The system builds a teaching model with complementary resource advantages to maximize the benefit of feedback teaching in English writing.

'It's not just about me': a qualitative study of couples' narratives about home death when one of the partners is dying of cancer.

Most cancer patients state a preference for home death. Care and support from primary caregivers are important to enable dying at home. A preference for home death from the perspective of couples has rarely been investigated. To explore how a preference for home death is understood and enacted in couples where one of the partners is dying of cancer. A qualitative interview research design with a narrative approach was used. Five couples participated in dyad interviews. During the analysis, two interviews that particularly illuminated couples' shared and individual views were chosen as the primary cases. The interviews show, in two highly different ways, how a preference for home death is a significant relational matter. The interviews are presented as two cases: 'Struggles in an Unknown Terrain' and 'Reliance at the Kitchen Table'. They show how a preference for home death can be understood and enacted as a struggle or as reliance based on the couple's shared biography and the partner's ability to care for the partner during the end-of-life phase. The analysis highlighted the negotiations that underpin a preference for home death. In these negotiations, the couples drew on idealised understandings of home death. These ideas were supported by cultural values related to autonomy and independence as well as participation and citizenship. Thus, in the negotiations about being cared for and caring, legitimate dependency and the maintenance of a reciprocal relationship were balanced. The presence of healthcare professionals and medical devices in the home had to be balanced with the need to maintain a sense of self and an authentic home. A relational perspective on a preference for home death made us attentive to couples' negotiations. These negotiations give couples the opportunity to re-evaluate and reconfirm individual and mutual needs in the end-of-life phase.

Inter-religious Harmony Between Hindu and Muslim Religious Communities of Miya Patan of Pokhara

Most Hindus see Muslims as the opposing faith to their own, although Hindus attend Muslim celebrations and Muslims attend Hindu festivals in Pokhara. Muslims in Pokhara dress in Nepali attire, which is not Islamic, and communicate in Nepali rather than Urdu or Hindi, which are peculiar to Muslim fundamentalism. Religious harmony is always vital for maintaining peace and harmony in a multi-religious country like Nepal. Despite the fact that Nepal is a secular country with a Hindu majority, Muslims are important and integral parts of Nepalese society. Unlike neighboring nations, there have been no severe religious riots or confrontations between Hindus and Muslims up to this point. When two cultures meet and interact, religious ideas will be transferred. The Muslims of Miya Patan have never contemplated a separate identity or attempted to break from society. They are quite proud of their national identity and identify more as Nepalese than Muslims. For ages, the Muslims of Pokhara have coexisted peacefully with their Hindu neighbors. This study attempts to explain the underlying causes influencing religious harmony in a multi-religious community of Miya Patan of Pokhara. In order to address the problem of study, discussion, in-depth interview and library research methods are applied. It is based on qualitative research method. It underlines the importance of components responsible for religious harmony in Pokhara. The findings may inspire other minority religious groups to maintain solid relationships in different parts of the country.

THE PRACTICE OF ESTABLISHING ISLAMIC LAW BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLE: A STUDY OF FIVE VILLAGES IN KEDEPATIAN SEMERAP, KERINCI REGENCY

Every fatwa issued by the ulama for a particular village in Kerinci refers to the adage, specifically in the five towns of the Semerap Kedepatian. In these five villages, the fatwas were issued and legitimized by the adat community. This article aims to determine what decisions are made and how the practice of establishing Islamic law by indigenous peoples in the customary area of the Kedepatian Semerap, Kerinci Regency. This type of research is qualitative field research. The data sources in this study are divided into two, namely, primary sources and data originating from traditional stakeholders, including elements of four types of adat, namely depati ninik mamak, tonggak pemarang, cerdik pandai, and ulama. While secondary data, namely documentation of customary decisions in the Semerap Kedepatian customary area. Data collection techniques were used in the observation, interview, and documentary research. The data analysis technique used is data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing (verification). The study results show that the decisions of Islamic law determined by the adat community are Islamic legal decisions which are furu’iyyah (branching), not ushul (principal) issues. The issues of the Islamic law that were decided included marriage (dowry), sunnah worship (terawih prayers and distribution of qurban meat), and once agreed on the issue of ushul (zakat). The practice of establishing Islamic law in the Kedepatian Semerap area was carried out at the gedang house, which was attended by four elements consisting of elements of depati ninik mamak and elements of ulama, elements of tonggak pemarang (post-duty ninik mamak), and elements of cerdik pandai. Determination of Islamic law is carried out by deliberation and consensus, and if no agreement is reached, the depati will use his prerogative rights in making legal decisions.

Peranan Remaja Masjid dalam Penguatan Aqidah Remaja di Daerah Kelurahan Sukamaju

Teenagers as the nation's next generation are the only hope of the nation where if the teenager is a strong believer then he can solve the various problems he faces. Adolescents who are physically and mentally strong in dealing with various kinds of life's problems, will be people who are always useful for religion, homeland and nation. Society as a place for youth is well formed, one of which is through organizations in the community, namely mosque youth. This research uses qualitative research with observation, interview and documentation research techniques to obtain the resulting data. This research was carried out at the Ar Rahman Mosque Youth, Suka Maju Village. The results showed that 1) The role of mosque youth in strengthening adolescent aqidah in the Sukamaju area was in the low category. The lack of roles and participation carried out by the youth members of the mosque in carrying out activities in the youth of the mosque causes no motivation to be generated for the youth of the region like to progress. 2) The aqeedah in the youth association of mosques in this advanced area is still low based on the research conducted. In the last two years, the situation has decreased, slowly the number of members collected is starting to decrease, teenagers are starting to be lazy to carry out the practices that they have been able to do at the mosque, such as praying in congregation, reading the Koran at sunset, conducting regular recitations, filling out materials and lectures.

Women And Work Choices In The Tourism Sector: A Form Of Women Empowerment

The covid-19 pandemic profoundly influenced the Balinese economy and tourism industry, particularly in Canggu's growing economy. The general purpose of this research is to discover how Canggu women's career options have changed since the rapid development of tourism in recent years, as the effect of tourism downfall during and after the COVID-19 epidemic. The research objective is to analyze the internal and external elements that impact women's decision to enter the workforce. This study adopted a qualitative descriptive analysis based on the research purpose. Female Canggu Village Youth Organization members were explicitly chosen as informants for this study. The interview process findings and researchers' involvement in the field revealed that women's decision-making in Canggu Village was influenced by internal factors, such as education level and personality traits, and external factors, such as cultural customs and the influence of those closest to them. Despite the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, women in Canggu Village are mainly confident that tourism will become the leading industry driving the Canggu Village economy. The findings of this study are likely to assist local governments, academics working on women's empowerment, gender equality, and sustainable tourist development, as well as other communities working to achieve sustainable development.

Study of Nepali Sculptures Reveals Hindu-Buddhist Religious Harmony in Nepal

In a multi-religious country like Nepal, religious harmony is essential for sustaining peace and calmness. Religious discord in society may result if religious concord is not addressed. Despite the fact that Nepal is a secular country with a Hindu majority, Buddhists remain crucial and inseparable elements of Nepalese society. They have lived in religious harmony in Nepal. At the period, there were no religious riots or tensions between Hindus and Buddhists. According to the Principle of Religious concord, when two cultures meet and interact, religious ideas will be exchanged, with the dominant culture prevailing. Harmony in cultures and customs evolved in Nepal for a variety of reasons. Because of their social acceptance and respect in society, Buddhists have become a vital part of it. Buddhism is seen as a component of Hindu philosophy by Hindus, and vice versa. In recent years, however, they have sought to differentiate themselves by religiously violating decades of peace and harmony. The purpose of this research is to examine the critical factors that contribute to religious harmony in a multi-faith society, as well as the reflection of religious harmony in Nepali sculptures. An in-depth interview and library research technique are used to investigate the topic of religious harmony. The goal of this article is to examine the underlying factors that lead to religious harmony in a multi-religious community, as well as its reflection in Nepali sculptures. This study also looks at the elements that influence harmony in the setting of Nepali sculptures. As a result, the conversation strives to foster long-term religious harmony between Nepal's Hindu and Buddhist religious communities. The findings may motivate them to keep strong connections.

Managing Cost and Schedule Evaluation of a Construction Project via BIM Technology and Experts’ Points of View

This research examines the beneficial contributions of project management to manage the cost and schedule of construction projects providing higher accuracy and reliability levels. The study depended on two main research approaches quantitative (online survey questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews) research techniques. The questionnaires and interviews aim to predict the importance of BIM technology in managing the cost and schedule of construction projects. Also, a third research method is employed, which represents a case study of a building, to make a comparison in terms of accuracy, effort, and budget of quantity take-off between manual (hand calculations) and numerical (REVIT Software estimations) approaches. The results revealed that adopting project management principles could significantly cut considerable budget, time, and effort to execute and complete construction projects. Also, project management is vital to prevent any financial losses or resource problems resulting from cost overruns or delays. Moreover, the results indicated that using modern project management techniques (including BIM technology and REVIT Software) could support engineers and project managers calculate the cost and schedule of their projects more accurately, avoiding errors. Besides, the results confirmed that using the REVIT software could aid project managers and civil engineers in evaluating the budget and time required to accomplish the construction project with less effort, time, and cost and provide a lower number of human errors compared with hand calculations. It was found that the manual and numerical results are greatly approximate to each other. Still, the results of the REVIT software offered more significant precision because of the accuracy in the modeling and the few engineers’ mistakes in calculating quantities manually.

The role of the hidden curriculum in the development of horizontal gender segregation, as a result of an interview research with teachers

The impact and influencing power of educators and teaching aids used in education systems is an internationally researched area as they play a key role in the development and study of students’ personality. According to the literature, the teacher is one of the most significant „tools” of the hidden curriculum behind the official curriculum, but the presentation of the phenomenon in teaching aids strengthens gender stereotypes and reduces the possibility of gender equality. In this study, we examine the role of a hidden curriculum in the development of gender horizontal segregation, with particular reference to the influence of teachers and textbooks. In the empirical part of the study, we did conduct a semi -structured interview with 18 elementary school teachers through a non-probability expert sampling, which was analyzed by categorization and interpretation. Our results show that traditional gender roles have prevailed in the family of educators. During their studies, they observed a difference depending on their educators in terms of behavior and expectations – but they believe that they themselves do not differentiate between students. According to their views, the personality of the teachers is of particular importance regarding the personality development and academic progress of the students, however, the career orientation of the children is mainly determined by the parents family patterns that appear in the family.
