A Comprehensive Study of Datasets for Research Works in IoT Networks

Internet of Things is a trending subject in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology. When a research scholar tries to find a problem statement in the arena of IoT, he or she probably Google the phrase “Security Issues in Internet of Things”. On this day August 22, 2024, when we searched the Google with this phrase, we got about 48,40,00,000 results in 0.46 seconds. When we searched Google Scholar with the same phrase, we got about 40,70,000 results (0.52 sec). This shows that lakhs of researchers are toiling to find solutions for Security Issues in IoT. There is a new and trending way of research that is finding solutions for issues in IoT using Machine Learning and Deep Learning Models. ML and DL algorithms need large sets of Data to train and test the algorithms. This made us to take up a study on available Datasets for this research topic. When we made review of literature, in this arena of study, we found that researchers are working on only a few datasets, though numerous datasets are available freely on the internet for academic purposes. Hence in this paper we made a comprehensive study of Datasets available for research works in Internet of Things.

The Impact of Internet Addiction on Academic Performance Among Medical Students in Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study and the Potential Role of Yoga.

Excessive internet use is a growing concern globally, and internet addiction negatively impacts academic performance. Limited research has been conducted on this topic among undergraduate medical students in Bangladesh. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of internet addiction and its impact on academic performance among medical students in Bangladesh, with a focus on the role of yoga in reducing Internet addiction as a proposed intervention. A cross-sectional study was conducted among third-year medical students in four colleges in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Simple random sampling techniques were used to select participants, and data were collected using pretested questionnaires and a checklist for office records through face-to-face interviews. SPSS version 25 was used for data processing and analysis. Out of 312 students, 84% were addicted to the internet, and only 16% were normal. In total, 64.4% had good results in the first professional examination, while 35.6% had poor results. In total, 85.9% had good attendance, while 14.1% had poor attendance. The association between internet addiction level and first professional examination results and class attendance was highly significant. This study highlights the high prevalence and negative impacts of internet addiction among medical students in Bangladesh. The study suggests that promoting awareness about healthy technology use, establishing a better balance between internet usage and academic study, and encouraging the practice of yoga can help alleviate this problem. Further research and interventions are needed to tackle this emerging public health issue. Encouraging students to use the internet for academic purposes and providing education and resources can help promote healthy technology use. Healthcare professionals should also be aware of the risks and encourage seeking help if needed.

Internet addiction during the COVID-19 pandemic among adolescents in southeast Nigeria and implications for adolescent care in the post-pandemic era: A cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of internet addiction amongst adolescents in Southeast Nigeria during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 10 randomly selected secondary schools, 2 (one urban and one rural) each from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi Enugu and Imo states of southeastern Nigeria between July and August 2021. Data on demographic variables were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire. Young's Internet Addiction Test was used to assess the extent of internet use. Analysis was done using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 23. The level of significance was set at a p-value of <0.05. The mean age of the respondents was 16.2 ± 1.8 years and the male: female ratio was 1:1.6. Most of the adolescents (61.1%) used the internet for academic purposes, while 32.8% used it for social interactions and the majority (51.5%) used their phones. The prevalence of internet addiction was 88.1% (24.9% had mild, 59.6% had moderate, while 3.6% had severe addiction) and a good proportion of the respondents (81.1%) perceived addiction as bad. Internet addiction was significantly associated with the respondent's age (p = 0.043), mother's level of education (p = 0.023), family size (p = 0.021), place of residence (p = 0.035), alcohol intake (p = 0.017), smoking (p = 0.015), substance use (p = 0.001) as well as the duration of internet use (p < 0.001). Internet addiction was predicted by the male gender (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 2.054; confidence interval (CI): 1.200-3.518), early adolescent age group (10-13 years) (AOR: 0.115; C1: 0.015-0.895) as well as the duration of internet use (AOR: 0.301; CI: 0.189-0.479). The prevalence of internet addiction among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic era was high. The predictors of addiction were the male gender, early adolescent age group and duration of internet use.

Internet Use and Mental Health Among Students

Studying the relationship between students' internet usage level and mental health was the purpose of this study. As respondents, 200 students from various schools in Mandaue City participated in this study. The internet use and mental health questionnaire were used to collect data. A weighted mean and chi-square test were used to analyze the data. There is a correlation between internet usage and mental health among students, according to the study. Students used the internet for academic purposes and to interact with each other. Students used the internet to purchase items and for any other purpose. Students had experiences that pushed them to learn and improve as individuals.

How Internet use patterns affect scholastic performance of Moroccan high school students: a correlational study

ABSTRACT The aim of the current study is to explore the effects of Internet use patterns on the scholastic performance of Moroccan high school students. To answer its research questions, the study used a random-sample sampling method to select its subjects. 373 participants have been recruited and were asked to answer a questionnaire about their Internet use habits. Analyzing the obtained data, the study runs four Spearman's Rank Correlation tests to measure the strength and direction of the relationship between the variables using a two-tailed test of significance. The findings reveal a negative correlation between academic performance and time duration online. In terms of specific online activities, a negative correlation was found between academic performance and time spent on social networking websites, listening to music and playing games. However, a positive correlation was detected between using the Internet for academic purposes and good academic performance. This study has important implications for policymakers.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF UNDERGRADUATES USE OF INTERNET FOR SOCIO-ACADEMIC REASONS

The internet today is a universal entity whose nature cannot be quickly defined. The internet has provided essential services in the education sector. Perhaps, people in academia rely heavily on the internet for academic purposes. However, observation suggests that a large number of students use the internet for purposes other than academics. The present study aimed to determine the differences in internet use for social or academic purposes among undergraduates in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. A total of two hundred undergraduates comprising male and female drawn from three tertiary institutions participated in the study. The participants completed a self-report measure on internet use for academic and non-academic purposes. A 2x2 contingency Chi-square analysis revealed that female participants used the internet more for non-academic purposes when compared to their male counterparts. A one-way ANOVA showed that the participants differ significantly on the use of the internet for academic purposes according to their levels of study. Discussion and conclusions are discussed.

Measuring Internet-Specific Reading Motivation and Engagement in an Academic Domain

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a new measure of motivation and engagement when reading for academic purposes on the Internet. Confirmatory factor analysis of the scores of 386 Norwegian pre-service teachers showed that a seven-factor model including the positive reading motivation and engagement constructs of intrinsic reading motivation, perceived competence in reading, valuing of reading, and dedication to reading, as well as the negative reading motivation and engagement constructs of perceived difficulty of reading, devaluing of reading, and avoidance of reading, fit the data well. Moreover, regression analyses showed that these reading motivation and engagement constructs contributed to time spent on the Internet for academic purposes and academic achievement over and above gender, educational level, teaching practice, and total time spent on the Internet. Taken together, these findings provide preliminary evidence for the construct validity of the measure. The discussion highlights how this measure may be used in future research on the roles of reading motivation and engagement in Internet reading contexts.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Learners’ Perceptions on the Effectiveness of the Internet to Enhance their Learning

This study attempted to investigate the vital role of the internet in enhancing the learning of reading. In addition, the study aimed to measure the students’ attitudes towards the internet and to identify to what extent the internet was employed in their reading classes. Moreover, the study aimed to explore the challenges that they encountered while using the internet in their learning of reading. In order to achieve these goals, the researcher used the descriptive analytical approach and used the questionnaire as the main data collection tool. The study sample comprised 50 Saudi EFL male students in the preparatory year at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. The findings of the study showed that students perceived that the internet is important in the process of reading comprehension learning and teaching with positive attitudes towards the internet. Results showed that the top challenges of using of the internet for reading learning/teaching are lack of students’ knowledge to know what to read on the internet, the short time of the class, and the students’ lack of the skills and knowledge to use the internet for academic purposes. Furthermore, the results showed that the students mostly used the internet for playing games, social networking, and learning vocabulary. It is recommended that English language teachers should be encouraged to use the internet in their language classes as it is valuable for their students to enhance their reading comprehension skills.

Does loneliness, self-esteem and psychological distress correlate with problematic internet use? A Bangladeshi survey study.

Researchers have claimed that problematic internet use (PIU) and internet addiction (IA) is a global mental health problem. However, little research has addressed this issue in Bangladesh and no previous study has examined the relationship between PIU and potential psychological risk factors. The present study examined the prevalence of PIU and its associated risk factors including socio-demographic variables, internet use behaviors, and other psychological variables including loneliness, self-esteem, and psychological distress. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Bangladeshi students (N = 605). Measures included the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire. Using a cut-off score of ≤60 (out of 100) on the IAT, the prevalence of PIU was 16.5% (n = 100). Regression analysis showed that sleep disturbance (more or less than 6-7 hours sleeping time), not using internet for academic purposes, and online chatting were risk factors for PIU. Loneliness and psychological distress were positively correlated with PIU, whereas self-esteem was negatively correlated. The present study highlights that PIU among Bangladeshi university students is an issue of concern and that targeted prevention is needed among emerging adults to help overcome the potentially negative effects of problematic internet use.

Exploring the Students’ Attitudes toward Internet Usage for Academic Excellence

The Internet is being widely used as an educational tool with numerous potentials. The students who use the Internet for academic purposes especially they can gain more knowledge and enhance cumulative grade point average. The aim of the study is to explore the students’ attitudes toward Internet usage for academic excellence. A cross-sectional survey questionnaire was used to collect data from 150 students at Dhaka University, Bangladesh. The study used descriptive statistics to analyze the collected data through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results of the study identified that 94% of the students use the Internet and only 6% of the students do not use the Internet currently. The study also determines that the majority (59.33%) of the students use the Internet for both academic and non-academic purposes. In addition, a vast majority of the students agree that Internet usage increases their academic performances greatly. The findings suggest that policymakers should invest more in information technology to ensure Internet facilities for 24 h a day so that students can easily access the Internet anytime for completing their academic and research work. Moreover, the study identifies future research areas that provide scholars opportunities to push theoretical and empirical boundaries and offer further insights into the study of students’ attitudes toward Internet usage.

Computer science students’ use of the internet for academic purposes: difficulties and learning processes

ABSTRACTHigher-education students now have more alternatives for searching for information than previous generations had. The Internet is a vast ocean of information sources, albeit with diverse reliability and quality. In Web 2.0 platforms, any participant can be a content creator. This reality is challenging for both the instructors and the students. We conducted interviews with 12 Computer Science students and 8 instructors from two universities to (a) identify the difficulties students encounter, if at all, (b) identify the learning processes that students undergo, if at all, when using the Internet for their CS studies, in particular, programming tasks; and (c) elicit instructors’ perceptions of students’ use of the Internet. Both students and instructors agreed that although using the Internet is not trivial, direct teaching of this skill is unnecessary. Instructors differed in their attitudes towards students’ use of the internet. We found that in the first year the students’ use of the Internet and their difficulties are similar to reports in the empirical literature, and echo the instructors’ concerns. However, after extensive experience, students undergo a learning process, and their ability to navigate the myriad sources, as well as to search, manage, and effectively evaluate Internet sources improves. Students mentioned their improved abilities to code as a means to effectively evaluate information sources.

Students’ internet access, internet self-efficacy, and internet for learning physics: Gender and grade differences

This paper aims to analyze the differences between internet facilities, internet usage purposes, internet self-efficacy (ISE), and internet perceptions in learning physics, regarding students’ gender and grade. A total of 798 senior high school students were surveyed randomly from 10 schools in the urban area of Lampung Province, Indonesia. The data were analyzed with Chi-square tests, t-test and ANOVA test for parametric, and Mann-Withney test and Kruskal-Wallis test for nonparametric. The results showed that by gender, female students were better at the ownership of computers and internet access via mobile phones. For the purpose of accessing internet, They were also identified more frequently in using internet for academic purposes, social media, and doing physics homework. Additionally, females were better at the perception about the benefit of the internet in learning physics. Besides, males were higher in using internet for entertainment and accessing physics’ video and animation. For experience and frequency in accessing internet and ISE, there were no significant gender differences found. Meanwhile, the differences were found between grades in some general usage as well as in ISE. Overall, the higher the students’ grade, the greater the percentage of students who use them, except in internet perception.

Readiness and utilization of computer-assisted learning among dental students and faculty

Introduction: An assessment of computer literacy and readiness is required for successful implementation of a structured computer-assisted learning (CAL). The present study was aimed to assess and compare computer literacy, attitude toward implementation of a structured CAL, and the current level of use of computer/laptop for academic purposes by students and faculty. In addition, the difference in attitude toward structured CAL and the current level of use of computer/laptop, based on computer literacy were evaluated. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study 316 undergraduate students and 57 faculties of a dental school in India. Computer literacy, the current level of use, and attitudes toward a structured CAL were assessed using a questionnaire. Participants were divided into basic user, intermediate user, and advanced user based on computer literacy. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: Most of the students and faculty were intermediate users. Faculty used the internet for academic purposes at a significantly higher frequency and accessed a wide variety of internet sites and material as compared to students. Most of the students and faculty favored introducing a structured CAL. The favorable attitude toward structured CAL and the better utilization of laptops for academic purposes were associated with the level of computer literacy among students. Conclusions: Both faculty and students favor the use of structured CAL. Higher computer literacy results in more use and favorable attitude toward structured CAL among students. Further training of faculty and students is needed to improve the readiness and utilization of CAL.

Introduction: This study was conducted to find the nature, impact, whether beneficial or adverse, the e-Devices are having on student’s academics, physical and mental health and, is making their life convenient or harming them. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in a private medical college in central Kerala and proportions, test of significance like Chi square, t test was used. Objectives: To find the prevalence and pattern of utilization of electronic devices; to evaluate the pattern, purpose of internet usage and factors influencing it; and to assess the need for incorporating computer education in medical curriculum. Results: 350 students participated in the research; 90(25.7%) of students don’t spend money to get access to internet; 255(79.45%) spend 2 hours or less on the internet; 296(84.6%) of students use internet for academic purposes; 152(43.4%) felt that e-Devices made their academic performance better while 40(11.4%) of the students felt it to be worse. 88(25.1%) prefer reading e books over conventional textbooks. 213(60.9%) do not have any problem while using internet but 96(27.4%) students had problems of eye strain while using internet. Conclusions: Most students seem to be able to balance the e-Device used and use it for academic purpose and making their lives efficient. But few got their academic performance worse, and some are suffering from eye strain, so efficient management of time on e-devices and internet without hindering their academic performance is needed.

Utilization of internet by health colleges students at the University of Dammam

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to explore students' attitudes towards using the Internet and various search engines, social media websites, usage purposes, and the barriers faced by students while using Internet in five health colleges at the University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Methods An online survey was administered to all 2nd year students in the five health colleges. The questionnaire included details about demographics, 13 questions with five Likert-scale responses, and some open-ended questions. Results Of the 231 students, 138 responded (response rate; 59.7%). The health colleges' students perceived that using the Internet was very crucial for their academic success. Google and Facebook were the most visited sites by the participants. The students' responses were not significantly different across the five health colleges at the University of Dammam. Conclusion Health colleges' students at the University of Dammam showed a positive attitude towards using the Internet for academic purposes. There is a need to provide wireless facilities on campus which will enhance the usage of Internet for educational purposes. Training courses about the appropriate usage of Internet sources are also emphasized.

Background: Internet increasingly being used globally in imparting and delivering medical education. Not onlyfor health care training of professionals but also the material available there for medical students is lacking in developing countries.Aims: To evaluate the access, pattern of use in general and for professional purposes by medical students.Methodology: The study was descriptive and cross-sectional in nature, the questionnaire was self-administeredsemi-structured and was pilot tested on a sample of 5 students from Muhammad Medical College before the finaladministration on students from different colleges. The study was carried out in4different colleges (Punjab Medical College, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Nisthar Medical College and Muhammad Medical College) of twoprovinces (Punjab and Sindh) of Pakistan. The sample size taken was 200 students from 3rd year to Final year,response rate was 97 (48.6%). Data analysis was done using SPSS 17. Ethical approval was taken from ourHospitals Research Ethics Committee No. 140911/REC/042Results: Amongst the 97 respondent, 59 (60.8%) were males and 38 (39.2%) were female users of internet, majority students started using internet in last two years (n=35.1%),Majority students (36.2%) spent up to 5 hoursweekly on internet, while 26.6% spent more than 10 hours per week. 91.7% said that they used internet for nonacademic use whereas only 13.4% used for academic purpose. In non-academic use, 20.1% used to playgames, 12.8% on watching movies and 32.3% on non-academic study. For academic purposes majority (32.9%)used internet to get better understanding of subjects, 24.7% for research purposes, 30.9% for making presentations and 24.7% for making assignments. Regarding academic benefit of internet 48.8% said it was useful while50.5% said it was of no use. Among all users 48.4% (61% males and 39% females) said that they have missused internet (eg. Watching porn, chatting with opposite sex, hacking etc.).Conclusion: Our study shows that most students do not use internet for academic purposes as much as they dofor other activities. Negative use of internet is common practice.Remarks: Steps should be taken to encourage students to use internet in more positive and discourage negative use.Keywords: Internet, Medical students.

Query classification and study of university students' search trends

PurposeThis study is an attempt to develop an automatic identification method for Arabic web queries and divide them into several query types using data mining. In addition, it seeks to evaluate the impact of the academic environment on using the internet.Design/methodology/approachThe web log files were collected from one of the higher institute's servers over a one‐month period. A special program was designed and implemented to extract web search queries from these files and also to automatically classify Arabic queries into three query types (i.e. Navigational, Transactional, and Informational queries) based on predefined specifications for each type.FindingsThe results indicate that students are slowly and gradually using the internet for more relevant academic purposes. Tests showed that it is possible to automatically classify Arabic queries based on query terms, with 80.6 per cent to 80.2 per cent accuracy for the two phases of the test respectively. In their future strategies, Jordanian universities should apply methods to encourage university students to use the internet for academic purposes. Web search engines in general and Arabic search engines in particular may benefit from the proposed classification method in order to improve the effectiveness and relevancy of their results in accordance with users' needs.Originality/valueStudying internet web logs has been the subject of many papers. However, the particular domain, and the specific focuses on this research are what can distinguish it from the others.

La búsqueda de información con fines académicos entre el alumnado universitario

This paper presents the results of a study of undergraduate students at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) focused on 1) a self-assessment of their knowledge and skills for using library services and the Internet in searching for information for academic purposes; 2) the frequency of their use of library services in general, and of the UIB’s library catalogue and the Internet for academic purposes, in particular. The study is based on a questionnaire sent to 1,025 randomly selected university students. The results obtained suggest that university students consider themselves, in general terms, competent in using the Internet for searching information for academic purposes, but not in using libraries for the same purpose. Logically, the frequency of Internet usage is also far superior to that of other resources used to search for academic information. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to improve the documentation skills and strategies for students’ use of libraries. This should not exclude the use of the Internet, but rather complement it for enhancing search results in regards to rigor, reliability and the potential to cover informational needs of an academic nature.
