The Current Role of Analytical Psychology in Maintaining Fictitious Boundaries that are Promoted through the Race Lie: A call to dismantle the virtual wall that exists through attitudes of white supremacy.

In 1928, the American Anthropological Association declared that "Anthropology provided no scientific basis for discrimination against any people on the ground of racial inferiority, religious affiliation, or linguistic heritage" (Guthrie, 1976/1998/2004, p. 30). In 1945, Jung denounced race theory as a pseudo-science. In 1950, UNESCO released its statement denouncing race. Long discredited as scientifically invalid, the race concept still holds uncanny value and significance for Americans and Europeans. In effect, the concept seems to be mysteriously linked to the limited accessibility and the limited economic support that is allotted to people of colour, internationally. This paper will explore the global implications of Jung's expressed attitude towards people of colour prior to 1945, which I identify as an attitude of white supremacy, an attitude that stands in direct contrast to the analytical ethos, as expressed by the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). This attitude may promote the continuance of racialized beliefs and behaviours within the planning and provision of care to individuals in need of medical and mental health services. It is requested that a written acknowledgment of harm be added to the works of C. G. Jung.

The current situation and the cultural background of psychological type theory in China.

As analytical psychology in China develops, especially with the China Society for Analytical Psychology approved for membership in the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP), many Chinese, who are already familiar with MBTI®-based personality testing in corporations, are interested in learning more about Jungian theory and practice with regard to psychological types. The author, a Chinese psychologist, emphasizes current problems standing in the way of this development, such as the common opinion that MBTI is equal to psychological types. He reports his recent research that highlights the present understanding of psychological types within China. Noting that Jung combined two attitudes with four functions to form eight function-attitudes of consciousness, the author explores the possible connection between Jung's eightfold system and the eight trigrams that organize the wisdom that the I Ching brings to emergent situations requiring exceptionally conscious decision-making. He compares I Ching translator Richard Wilhelm's naming and description of these eight Gua with Jungian analyst John Beebe's descriptions of the eight function-attitudes and finds striking parallels. This amplification sheds light on the archetypal nature of psychological consciousness as well upon the typology of it that Jung advanced.

Time for space at the table: an African American - Native American analyst-in-training's first-hand reflections. A call for the IAAP to publicly denounce (but not erase) the White supremacist writings of C.G. Jung.

This article provides an African American-Native American analyst-in-training's first-hand reflections on Jung's firm depiction of Blacks of African descent and America's First Nations People (the Red man) as inferior, through a theory of primitivity that unveils Jung's belief in and support of White supremacy. With no intended disrespect or neglect intended toward America's First Nations, this article focuses primarily on Jung's apparent disdain for Blacks (the Negro). Utilizing writings from Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois and Na'im Akbar, this article highlights ways in which Jung's biases align with the White supremacist perspective of the Negro as a problem, detrimental to social order. The paper concludes with an Appendix which outlines a call to the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) to take corrective action and to publicly denounce those facets of Jung's writings that diverge from the core of his theory and that promote toxic attitudes of bigotry, perhaps discouraging many people of colour from enrolling in analytic training.

Healing cultural trauma and its application to the Router programme

This paper explores the issue of cultural trauma, which is an area of concern in psychology generally and has emerged as one within the International Association for Analytical Psychology's Router training programme. A summary of responses to the issues of cultural trauma and complexes (alongside cultural differences) within analytical psychology are presented, followed by an overview of findings from the IAAP's evaluation of the Router training programme. These findings are then aligned with contemporary sociological research. The significant issues involved in healing cultural trauma seem to be 'working through', as well as the place of imagination, dreamwork, symbolism and metaphor. Research in Poland has specifically highlighted the importance of good governance, economic vitality, personal and social capital (as in education and social participation), a meaning system, certain external contingencies, channels of mobility and ritualism.

Il nostro articolo è un ampliamento della relazione che abbiamo tenuto del convegno "Art and Psyche: Conference IV. The illuminated imagination" organizzato dallo IAAP (International Association for Analytical Psychology), e svoltosi a Santa Barbara (California) lo scorso aprile. Vorremmo dare un contributo nell'ambito della riflessione sulla potenza evocativa e terapeutica delle immagini e con questo fine abbiamo provato a far dialogare pratica clinica e riflessione teorica, partendo dai contributi sull'argomento di C.G. Jung, D. Kalsched, V. Kast ed altri. Nell'esposizione si alterneranno momenti descrittivi, riguardanti un'esperienza di gruppo di psicoterapia espressiva (arteterapia) con donne rifugiate e vittime di tratta, e momenti di riflessione sulle possibilità che l'arte offre quale lingua comune, che permette di instaurare relazioni immediate, divenendo così strumento di integrazione. I materiali, il processo creativo e l'accoglienza ristabiliscono gradualmente un senso di controllo sugli eventi, andato perso col trauma: lavorare sulle proprie immagini offre delle possibilità riparative, a fronte degli effetti disintegrativi propri dell'esperienza traumatica. The Predictability of Synchronicity Experience: Results from a Survey of Jungian Analysts

Fibonacci time patterns may predict future synchronistic events (SEs) by forecasting nonlinear dynamical interactions. This study examined if there were differences between observed distributions of Fibonacci time patterns matching SEs compared to expected distributions based on chance. An online survey link was e-mailed to a random sample of Jungian analysts drawn from membership lists of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). Two experiments tested the hypothesis that Fibonacci algorithms would predict increased synchronicity matches compared to chance. The two Fibonacci algorithms studied were a golden section model (GSM) and harmonic model (HM). Participants reported a total of 41 synchronicities. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p < .001) between observed and expected frequencies of matches based on chance for the HM algorithm, and no significant difference in matches predicted by the GSM algorithm. Synchronicity dynamics were found to exhibit a horizon of predictability between ±34 and ±89 days. The article discusses, among other issues, what these findings might mean for theoretical explanations of synchronicity and clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION to Special Edition of JAP on the 'Who is My Jung?' conference held at the British Library in October 2017 to mark the 40th Anniversary of the foundation of the Association of Jungian Analysts (AJA).

The paper reviews the processes which went into the creation of an exceptionally comprehensive conference on Jungian analysis and psychology. The conference brought together all five of the constituent societies based in London of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). The personal nature of the conference contributions is highlighted together with observations about the passage from spoken to written modes. The idea of 'conference space' is reviewed and this leads to a discussion of the often overlooked benign role of conferences in professional life.

The role played by Gerhard Adler in the development of analytical psychology internationally and in the UK

The Jungian analyst Gerhard Adler left Berlin and re-settled in London in 1936. He was closely involved with the professionalization of analytical psychology internationally and in the UK, including the formation of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and The Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP).The tensions that arose within the latter organization led to a split that ended in the formation of the Association of Jungian Analysts (AJA). A further split at AJA resulted in the creation of another organization, the Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists (IGAP). Adler's extensive publications include his role as an editor of Jung's Collected Works and as editor of the C.G. Jung Letters.

C.G. Jung: 50 years after his death

The article describes one individual's journey with analytical psychology from the time that Jung was still alive until the present. The author began his career in psychiatry one year after Jung's death, having met Jung prior to his death. He has experienced what it has meant to be Jungian for the past 49 years, and how the image of Jung has changed over that period of time. His experience is mainly in the English-speaking world but also as president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) he has experienced the growth of analytical psychology around the world.

Freud Meets Jung: A Centenary Celebration

The Freud Meets Jung conference held in November 2007 was organized jointly by The British Psycho-Analytical Society, The Society of Analytical Psychology, and The Journal of Analytical Psychology to celebrate the centenary of the first meeting between the two pioneers of psychoanalysis. Speakers and Chairs were from the three organizations with the addition of two historians of depth psychology, Ernst Falzeder and Sonu Shamdasani. The conference was sponsored by the International Association for Analytical Psychology and the International Psychoanalytical Association. A tribute was paid to Dr. Joseph Henderson who died at age 104 the week before the conference.

Impressions of the XVII International IAAP Congress in Cape Town, South Africa

The International Association for Analytical Psychology, or the IAAP, is the international umbrella organization for all Jungian analysts in the world. Every three years, it organizes a week-long Congress where papers are presented in many different languages and on many different subjects around a given theme. It is also a time to renew international friendships and catch up with our colleagues from around the world. This year’s conference theme was entitled “Journeys, Encounters: Clinical—Communal—Cultural,” and the conference took place in Cape Town, South Africa. This was only the second time that a Congress has taken place outside of Europe or the United States. There was concern about how many people would make the long and expensive journey to South Africa, but in the end, more than 500 people attended the conference. The program committee had received numerous proposals so that concurrent papers, panels, and films were scheduled every afternoon except when the delegates met, making it impossible for any one participant to hear all the presentations. In the morning, the plenary sessions were open to all participants. There were two unique features, besides location, to this Congress. One was the fact that local speakers from the surrounding community were invited to speak early on. The second was members of the Jungian academic community, the IAJS, were prominent speakers. For a country that experienced many years of apartheid, South Africa is now governed by the black majority. On the first morning of the Congress, we learned about the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Incredibly moving stories were told of what happened when perpetrators met with the families of the victims. This relationship is seen to have been contentious as well as complementary in promoting an interdisciplinary approach to Jungian clinical practice. The complementary aspects are evidenced in the training programmes of IAAP constituent Societies and in papers presented at the Cambridge Congress of 2001 and the Barcelona Congress of 2004. The role of the Journal in holding together different, sometimes divergent, views relating to Jung's concepts and theories, and in subjecting these views to discussion, debate and assessment as to their clinical relevance and effectiveness, is explored.

Deepening the soul: An interview with murray stein

Murray Stein is a graduate of Yale University, Yale Divinity School, and has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. In 1973 he received his Diploma from the C. G. Jung Institute in Zürich. He has been in private practice since 1976 in Wilmette, Illinois, where he is also a training analyst with the C. G. Institute of Chicago. Dr. Stein is an ordained minister in the United Presbyterian Church. He is a founding member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and was the first president of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. He is the current president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology. He is the author and editor of a several books, including In Midlife, Transformation and Jung's Map of the Soul, and Jungian Analysis. Dr. Stein and his wife Jan have two children, Sarah and Christopher, and a Maltese terrier named Papageno.
