Spatially oriented correlated emission based on selective drive of diatomic superradiance states

<sec>In recent years, the radiative properties of atomic systems have been a hot topic in the research fields of quantum optics and quantum information. With the continuous development of nanophotonics, quantum antennas have become an important model for studying atomic radiation. In order to investigate these phenomena in depth, we investigate a system composed of two two-level atoms, and study the two-photon emission phenomenon of diatomic system under conditions of driving directional tunable laser field, interatomic dipole-dipole interaction, and spontaneous emission coherence.</sec><sec>In this study, we diagonalize the atomic Hamiltonian to obtain the eigenvalues and entangled states of the system (symmetric and asymmetric states of two atoms), and use the rotating wave approximation to rotate the system into the laser frame. The evolution of the system is characterized mainly by the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric state, as well as the evolution of coherent terms. In our studies it is found that for identical atoms, certain laser directions and geometric configurations can exclusively drive the superradiant and subradiant states of atoms, which can enhance the first-order interference effect of the atoms and markedly increase the probability of two-photon emission in a specific detection direction. When the superradiant state of the atom is solely driven, there will be no coupling between the superradiant state and subradiant state, resulting in a correlation function angular distribution that is symmetric along the direction perpendicular to atomic axis. Further adjusting the laser direction causes the atomic interference patterns to shift, and the system will exhibit two-photon emission characteristics on one side or both sides.</sec><sec>For nonidentical atomic systems, due to detuning between the two atoms, the laser cannot drive the superradiant state or subradiant state individually, and the influence of changing the laser direction on the coupling strength diminishes with the increase of detuning between the atoms. When the laser is in resonance with one of the atoms, due to the atomic interactions, the other atom can achieve the strongest coherent effect without resonating with the laser. This research reveals that atomic detuning is crucial for the correlation values and angular distribution of the correlation function. By adjusting the atomic detuning and laser direction, the system can display highly directed one-sided two-photon emission characteristics. However, different dissipation rates will lead the probability of two-photon emission to decrease. Our studies can achieve highly directional two-photon emission on one side or both sides, which provides a theoretical basis for studying the two-photon emission of nanoantennas.</sec>

Spatially dependent Lamb shift in a waveguide and its influence on the optical polyatomic cooperative effects

We show that the Lamb shift can significantly affect the nature of the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction in structured reservoirs. The effect is explained by the difference in the Lamb shift for atoms located at different positions due to the inhomogeneity of the spatial structure of the modes of the electromagnetic field. Based on the model system involving two atoms in a waveguide, we demonstrate that this difference can be the same order as the natural linewidth of the atomic transition.

Ground state of the polaron in an ultracold dipolar Fermi gas

An impurity atom immersed in an ultracold atomic Fermi gas can form a quasiparticle, so-called Fermi polaron, due to impurity-fermion interaction. We consider a three-dimensional homogeneous dipolar Fermi gas as a medium, where the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) makes the Fermi surface deformed into a spheroidal shape, and, using a Chevy-type variational method, investigate the ground-state properties of the Fermi polaron: the effective mass, the momentum distribution of a particle-hole excitation, the drag parameter, and the medium-density modification around the impurity. These quantities are shown to exhibit spatial anisotropies in such a way as to reflect the momentum anisotropy of the background dipolar Fermi gas. We also give numerical results for the polaron properties at the unitarity limit of the impurity-fermion interaction in the case in which the impurity and fermion masses are equal. It has been found that the transverse effective mass and the transverse momentum drag parameter of the polaron both tend to decrease by $\ensuremath{\sim}10%$ when the DDI strength is raised from 0 up to around its critical value, while the longitudinal ones exhibit a very weak dependence on the DDI.

Cooperative spontaneous decay of local excitation in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms near a charged conductive surface

On the basis of the general quantum microscopic theory we study the process of spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms embedded into transparent dielectric and located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We have analyzed the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the character of interatomic dipole-dipole interaction. This leads to the modification of the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and the spontaneous decay dynamics. We have shown that the electric field changes the cooperative Lamb shift, as well as the character of sub- and superradiant decay.

Mirror and cavity formations by chains of collectively radiating atoms

We search for mirror and cavitylike features of a linear chain of atoms in which one of the atoms is specially chosen as a probe atom that is initially prepared in its excited state or is continuously driven by a laser field. Short chains are considered, composed of only three and five atoms. The analysis demonstrates the importance of the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction, which may lead to a collective ordering of the emission along some specific directions. We examine the conditions under which the radiative modes available for the emission are only those contained inside a cone centered about the interatomic axis. Particular interest is in achieving one-way emission along the interatomic axis, in either the left (backward) or the right (forward) direction, which is referred to as a mirrorlike behavior of the atomic chain. A direction-dependent quantity called the directivity function, which determines how effective the system is in concentrating the radiation in a given direction, is introduced. We show that the function depends crucially on the distance between the atoms and find that there is a threshold for the interatomic distances above which a strongly directional emission can be achieved. The one-sided emission as a manifestation of the mirrorlike behavior and a highly focused emission along the interatomic axis as a characteristic of a single-mode cavity are demonstrated to occur in the stationary field. Below the threshold the directivity function is spherically symmetric. However, we find that the population can be trapped in one of the atoms, and sometimes in all atoms, indicating that at these short distances the system decays to a state for which there are no radiative modes available for emission.

The effect of dipole-dipole interactions on the single-photon transmission spectrum

The effect of the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction on the single-photon transmission spectrum is investigated theoretically in the single-mode optical waveguide containing a pair of dipole interaction two-level atoms and the incident photon, respectively. The results show that the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction can induce a remarkable change in the photon-atom on-resonance frequency in the single-photon transmission spectrum compared with the nonexistence of the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction. As a consequence, the original zero transmission probability at the original photon-atom resonant frequency increases to one directly thanks to the appropriately-chosen dipole-dipole interaction strength. Consequently, this characteristic reveals that the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction treated as an important internal physical mechanism can perform as a functional quantum switching to manipulate the photon’s transmission in the optical waveguide. The corresponding interpretations responsible for this phenomenon are presented.

Quantum phase transitions for two coupled cavities with dipole-interaction atoms

We investigate the quantum phase transitions for two weakly coupled atom-cavity sites. The interatomic dipole-dipole interaction is considered. Our numerical results show that the dipole-dipole interaction is a crucial parameter for the quantum phase transition. For small atom-cavity detuning, the becomes more and more obvious with the increase of the dipole-dipole interaction. In addition, the strong dipole-dipole interaction can lead the atomic excitation to be suppressed completely, and only the photonic excitation exists for the ground states. When the atom-cavity detuning is comparable with the dipole-dipole interaction, the dipole-dipole interaction enlarges the positive detunings, which is in favor of exhibiting superfluid photonic states. While for the negative detuning, the dipole-dipole interaction will reduce it, and contribute to the formation of the polaritonic insulator states. The cases for extended models have also been briefly analyzed. We also discuss how to find these novel phenomena in future experiments.

Resonant transmition of the quantum information from one atom-qubit to another at large distances

The feasibility of resonance transfer of quantum information from one double-level atom to another that is at an arbitrary distance from the former one has been proved. Symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of the wave functions of individual atoms are considered. When taking into account the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction, a certain energy corresponds to each wave function. A solution has been found to a system of equations for the amplitudes of the probability that a resonance photon will be absorbed by one of the system atoms. Three types of solution to the system of equations have been investigated for the resonance and nonresonance absorption of photons and different interatomic distances. It has been shown that when atoms are at an infinite distance from one another, so that there is no dipole-dipole interaction of atoms, quantum information can be transferred from one atom to another via the quantum teleportation channel.

Free polarization decay in media with a short-range dipole-dipole interatomic interaction

The effect that may be exerted by an interatomic dipole-dipole interaction upon optical transient processes in dense resonance media, in particular, free polarization decay, is analyzed. The behavior of the macroscopic polarization after a single-pulse excitation of a dense ensemble of two-level atoms is considered. It is shown that the free polarization signal is of oscillatory nature, with the oscillation frequency varying in time and being dependent on the dipole-dipole interaction constant, the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse, and the detuning of its carrier frequency from the resonance. The free polarization signal decay, which depends on the magnitude and sign of the sum of the detuning of the exciting pulse carrier frequency from the resonance and the Lorentz frequency, may obey either a power or an exponential law. The signal decay rate is determined not only by the inhomogeneous broadening, but also by the ratio of the above parameters.

Dynamics of interaction between two-level atoms in a laser field and linear stationary optical dimensional resonances

Formulas for radiative forces acting on the atoms of a diatomic object in a field of external laser radiation are obtained with allowance made for the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction. It is shown that one can control the motion of the atoms by gradually varying the frequency of external laser radiation due to the presence of optical dimensional resonances in the spectrum of the diatomic object.
