The existence of first‐order torques and solid body spinning velocities in intense sound fields has recently been established [T. J. Wang, H. Kanber, and I. Rudnick, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 60, S53 (A) (1976); Phys. Rev. Lett. 38, 128 (1977)]. Because of its first order the effects are large and can be easily demonstrated in the classroom. An apparatus using the degenerate (2, 0, 0) and (0, 2, 0) (shifted 90° in phase) modes has been constructed which simultaneously spins four styrofoam cups at fairly high velocity at the four pressure nodes of the resulting sound field. As one expects the spin of neighboring cups have opposite signs. A novel feature of the design is that the mobility of the cups is greatly enhanced by the vibration of the floor of the enclosure which is driven by the sound field. A motion picture will be shown.
