Size Distribution Characteristics of Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions During Summer and Autumn in Zhengzhou

To study the compositional characteristics of atmospheric particulates with different particle sizes in the central city of Zhengzhou, China, a Tisch graded impact sampler was used to sample atmospheric particulates in summer and autumn. The mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions, including anions (Cl-, F-, NO3-, and SO42-) and cations (Na+, Ca2+, NH4+, K+, and Mg2+) were measured by ion chromatography, and the online ion chromatography-based analyzer MARGA monitored the real-time concentration of particulate nitrate. The results showed that the average concentration of water-soluble ions in Zhengzhou City was (70.9±52.1) μg·m-3 during the sampling period, and the order of water-soluble ion mass concentrations was NO3- > SO42- > NH4+ > Ca2+ > Na+ > Cl- > Mg2+ > K+ > F-; NO3-, SO42-, and NH4+ accounted for 79.9% of total water-soluble ions. The NO3- concentration was mainly concentrated in the 0.65-3.3 μm particle size segment, despite the SO42- concentration being concentrated in the ≤ 1.1 μm particle size segment in autumn or summer. Both NO3- and SO42- had a bimodal distribution in summer and autumn and were mainly distributed as fine particles. NH4+ showed seasonal variation with a bimodal distribution in summer and a unimodal distribution in autumn. Zhengzhou City had serious ozone pollution in summer, and O3 and NO3- showed the "staggered peak" phenomenon, indicating photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. In autumn, water-soluble inorganic ion concentration in particulate matter was high, and the ratio of[NO3-]/[SO42-] was higher than 0.5. The mobile source is an important source of particles. NOR and SOR peaks were on the 1.1-2.1 μm particle size segment in summer, whereas those in the 0.65-1.1 μm particle size segment occurred in autumn. The sulfur gas-to-grain conversion in summer was larger than that of nitrogen, contrary to the result in autumn.

Biological and chemical compositions of atmospheric particulate matter during hazardous haze days in Beijing

Particulate matter (PM), a major air pollutant in Beijing in recent years, poses a formidable public health threat. Even through many studies have documented the chemical and biological characteristics of PM, less is known about these characteristics on hazardous haze days (Air Quality Index, AQI 301–500) and the difference with sunny or unhealthy haze day (AQI 151–200) characteristics. Herein, studies were performed during a red alert air pollution event (continuous hazardous haze days) and the first few days following the event (sunny days first and then unhealthy haze days) in Beijing from December 19 to 25, 2016. A laser particle counter and an ANDERSEM-6 sampler were used to study the concentration and size distributions dynamics of the PM and the culturable airborne bacteria and fungi, respectively. PM2.5 was sampled by a high-volume air sampler and the chemical compositions, bacterial and fungal community structures, and endotoxin levels were analyzed. The results showed that the PM concentrations on the hazardous haze days and unhealthy haze days were 10.7 and 8.0 times higher, respectively, than those on the sunny days. The chemical composition of PM2.5 was highly correlated with the AQI. The concentration and percentage of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSII), which dominated the PM2.5 constituents, as well as the levels of endotoxin were higher on hazardous haze days than on unhealthy haze days and sunny days. Interestingly, the abundances of bacteria and fungi demonstrated the following order: unhealthy haze days> sunny days> hazardous haze days. Most culturable bacteria and fungi were distributed in particles with aerodynamic diameters of 2.1–4.7 μm. Redundancy analysis found total organic carbon explained 30.0% and 27.1% of total variations in bacterial composition and fungal composition at the genera level, respectively. Our results facilitate a better understanding of the biological and chemical composition dynamics of PM in Beijing.

Water-soluble ions in PM2.5 during spring haze and dust periods in Chengdu, China: Variations, nitrate formation and potential source areas

Hourly concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, NO3− and SO42−) in PM2.5 and related reactive gases were measured with a Gas and Aerosol Collector combined with Ion Chromatography (GAC-IC) in urban Chengdu from April 17 to May 27, 2017, during which both haze and dust episodes occurred frequently. Nitrate was the most abundant ion in PM2.5 and substantially increased during haze pollution with the NO3−/SO42− mass ratio increasing from 0.78 during clean period to 1.1 during haze period. Aerosols in Chengdu were generally ammonium-rich, wherein ammonium nitrate was primarily formed through homogeneous gas-phase reactions and limited by the availability of HNO3, indicating that preferentially reducing the emissions of NOx could make for mitigating spring haze pollution in Chengdu. Backward trajectory clustering coupled with measured species and a potential source contribution function (PSCF) for PM2.5, PM10/PM2.5, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and Ca2+ indicated that regionally transported pollutants from the southern and southeastern Sichuan Basin strongly contributed to springtime PM2.5 pollution in Chengdu, but long-distance transport from northwestern China also contributed to dust pollution. Moreover, the treatment of urban fugitive dust in southern Sichuan is also important for reducing coarse particles in Chengdu. Therefore, the improvement of air quality in Chengdu, even in the Sichuan Basin, requires the regional joint emission reduction of particles and gaseous precursors across the entire Sichuan Basin, especially for cities located in southeastern Sichuan Basin.

On the significance of potassium and chlorine content of lignocellulose during torrefaction

In this work, the effect of inorganic content during the torrefaction of black locust wood, wheat straw, and rape straw was studied. The torrefaction experiments were carried out at five temperatures: 200, 225, 250, 275 and 300 °C using 1 h isothermal period. In order to study the influence of inorganic content, the raw samples were washed with hot water to remove the majority of the water soluble inorganic components. The inorganic ion content of the original and washed raw materials was measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) method. The thermal stability and the effect of torrefaction on the chlorine content of lignocelluloses were studied by the thermogravimetry/mass spectrometry method. The degree of hemicellulose and cellulose decomposition of the original and washed samples during torrefaction at different temperatures was characterized by compositional analysis of the samples. The cellulose, hemicellulose, and Klason lignin contents of the samples were determined by acidic hydrolysis and subsequent high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The thermal degradation properties of original and washed samples have been compared. Principal component analyses (PCA) have been applied to identify the similarities and differences between the untreated and various torrefied black locust wood, rape straw, and wheat straw samples. We found that contrary to cellulose the impact of the alkaline ions on the thermal decomposition of hemicelluloses is marginal. As a result of washing the hemicellulose content of the black locust and rape straw samples became thermally slightly more stable in the 200–300 °C temperature range, while in case of wheat straw this effect is not significant. The formation of methyl chloride was detected during thermal decomposition. We found that most of the methoxy groups of straw lignins were cleaved during torrefaction at 275 and 300 °C, hence the severely torrefied straw samples produced only small amount of methyl chloride during thermal decomposition.

Degradation of Phenol in Water Using a Novel Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Reactor

Phenol is toxic to human and persistent in the environment. Traditional treatment methods have the disadvantages of long treatment time, large amount of agents, and secondary pollution. In this study, a novel gas-liquid two-phase dielectric barrier discharge reactor was designed to remove phenol in aqueous solution. The effects of operating conditions (applied voltage, discharge spacing, pH, and conductivity), different water matrix (deionized water, groundwater, surface water, tap water), and inorganic ions were investigated. Moreover, the reaction mechanisms and the possible degradation pathway were proposed. The removal efficiency of phenol achieved 95.5% under the optimal operating conditions (discharge voltage of 17.6 kV, discharge gap of 1 mm, air flow rate of 60 mL min−1) coupling with H2O2 at 10 mM. The presence of different concentrations of inorganic ions (0.1, 1, 10, and 20 mM) could inhibit the phenol removal efficiencies. Specially, Cl− had different effects on phenol removal efficiency. The inhibition of Cl− on phenol removal was weakened when Cl− concentration was greater than 1 mM, which allows the technology that has certain advantages in treating high-salt wastewater containing high chloride concentration. In addition, ˙OH was verified as the main active species in phenol removal. The possible degradation pathway was proposed according to theoretical calculation and GC-MS measurement.

Deposition of water-soluble inorganic ions in PM2.5 in a typical forestry system in Beijing, China

BackgroundRapid economic development in China has resulted in an increase in severe air pollution in city groups such as the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Metropolitan Region. PM2.5 (fine particles with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter of 2.5 μm or less) is one of the most important pollutants. The deposition process is an important way of removing particles from the air. To evaluate the effect of an urban forest on atmospheric particle removal, a concentration gradient method was used to measure the deposition velocities of water-soluble inorganics in PM2.5 in two national forest parks in Beijing, China. The following eight water-soluble inorganic ions in PM2.5 were investigated: sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, nitrate, and sulfate.MethodsSamples were taken from two sites in Beijing from the 7th to the 15th May, 2013. The concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions were analyzed with ion chromatography. We used the concentration gradient technique to estimate the deposition flux and velocity. To determine the relationships between leaf traits and particle accumulation, typical leaf samples from each selected species were studied using scanning electron microscopy.ResultsThe total deposition flux and total deposition velocity during the daytime were higher than those at night. Sulfate showed the biggest deposition flux and velocity at both study sites, whereas the other ions showed different trends at each site. Result from higher proportion of coniferous to broadleaved trees, the total deposition flux of the eight ions measured in Jiufeng National Forest Park was greater than that in Olympic Forest Park.ConclusionsThe deposition velocity was affected by meteorological conditions such as wind speed, temperature, and humidity. The deposition velocity was also influenced by tree species. The surface of plants is an important factor influencing particle deposition. The results of this study may help in assessing the effects of forestry systems on particle removal and provide evidence for urban air pollution control and afforestation of urban areas.

Mass Concentrations and Size Distributions of Water-soluble Inorganic Ions in Atmospheric Aerosols in Beibei District, Chongqing

In order to study the concentration and distribution characteristics of water-soluble inorganic ions in aerosol particles of the Beibei district of Chongqing, aerosol samples were collected with an Andersen cascade impactor between March 2014 and February 2015. Water-soluble inorganic ions, including Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, F-, Cl-, NO3-, and SO42- were determined for different particle sizes (9.00, 5.80, 4.70, 3.30, 2.10, 1.10, 0.65, and 0.43 μm) using the ion chromatography method. Results showed that SO42-, NH4+, NO3-, Cl-, Na+, and K+ were mainly distributed in fine particles, while Mg2+, Ca2+, and F- were mainly present in coarse particles. SNA (SO42-, NH4+, and NO3-) exhibited clear unimodal distribution, with peaks in the droplet mode of 0.65-1.10 μm, mainly present in the form of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 in fine particles. The formation of SO42- is mainly attributed to in-cloud processes and partly to oxidation of SO2. Na+, Cl-, and Mg2+ exhibited bimodal distribution in coarse and fine particles; K+ was a single peak distribution in the range of 0.43-1.10 μm, while peaks of F- and Ca2+ concentrations were in coarse particles. Average annual concentrations of total water-soluble ions in PM2.1 and PM9.0 were (32.68±15.28) μg·m-3and (48.01±19.66) μg·m-3 over the observation period. Seasonal variations of PM2.1 and PM9.0concentrations decreased in the order of winter > spring > summer > autumn. This was the same for most ions, but a small number of ions (F-, Mg2+ and Ca2+) had a different pattern in the spring, summer, and winter. The SNA were the major components of water-soluble ions in PM2.1, and Ca2+ was the major component of water-soluble ions in PM9.0 besides SNA. The concentration of cations was significantly higher than that of anions' in PM2.1 and PM9.0, with a certain correlation between different ions. Emissions from motor vehicle exhaust, combustion processes, soil sources, and fugitive dust were the major sources of water-soluble ions in this area. The effect of air temperature on secondary ions is significant (P<0.05), but relative humidity and wind speed have no significant effect (P>0.05).

Analysis of Seasonal Variations in Chemical Characteristics and Sources of PM2.5 During Summer and Winter in Ji'nan City

To investigate seasonal variations in the chemical compositions of aerosols in Ji'nan City, PM2.5 samples were collected during summer and winter in 2015. The sampling period lasted one month during each season. PM2.5 samples were analyzed for the composition, concentration, and sources of water-soluble inorganic ions, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). Results showed that mass concentrations of PM2.5 in winter were about twice those in summer, and concentration levels varied between fine and excellent. The concentrations of total water-soluble inorganic ions were also higher in winter than in summer, with SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+ being the dominant species and well correlated with each other. NH4+ in PM2.5 mostly existed in the form of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 in both summer and winter. There was strong secondary oxidation of SO2 and NO2. The sulfate oxidizing rate (SOR) was higher in summer than in winter, while the nitrate oxidizing rate (NOR) showed the opposite trend. The ratio of anions to cations in both summer and winter were less than one, suggesting that PM2.5 were slightly alkaline. The ISORROPIA-Ⅱ mode showed that acidity in winter was stronger than in summer. Concentations of OC and EC were both higher in winter than in summer. The ratios of OC to EC and WSOC to OC and estimated concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) showed that secondary pollution was more serious in winter than in summer. Principal component analysis(PCA)indicated that the major sources contributing to inorganic ions were secondary oxidation and biomass burning in summer, and coal combustion and secondary pollutants formed by chemical oxidation of precursors emitted from coal combustion in winter.

Size-resolved characteristics of inorganic ionic species in atmospheric aerosols at a regional background site on the South African Highveld

Aerosols consist of organic and inorganic species, and the composition and concentration of these species depends on their sources, chemical transformation and sinks. In this study an assessment of major inorganic ions determined in three aerosol particle size ranges collected for 1 year at Welgegund in South Africa was conducted. SO42− and ammonium (NH4+) dominated the PM1 size fraction, while SO42− and nitrate (NO3) dominated the PM1–2.5 and PM2.5–10 size fractions. SO42− had the highest contribution in the two smaller size fractions, while NO3− had the highest contribution in the PM2.5–10 size fraction. SO42− and NO3− levels were attributed to the impacts of aged air masses passing over major anthropogenic source regions. Comparison of inorganic ion concentrations to levels thereof within a source region influencing Welgegund, indicated higher levels of most species within the source region. However, the comparative ratio of SO42− was significantly lower due to SO42− being formed distant from SO2 emissions and submicron SO42− having longer atmospheric residencies. The PM at Welgegund was determined to be acidic, mainly due to high concentrations of SO42−. PM1 and PM1–2.5 fractions revealed a seasonal pattern, with higher inorganic ion concentrations measured from May to September. Higher concentrations were attributed to decreased wet removal, more pronounced inversion layers trapping pollutants, and increases in household combustion and wild fires during winter. Back trajectory analysis also revealed higher concentrations of inorganic ionic species corresponding to air mass movements over anthropogenic source regions.

Analysis of storage compounds and inorganic ions in dimorphic seeds of euhalophyte Suaeda salsa

Suaeda salsa is an annual euhalophytic herb that produces dimorphic seeds, such as small black seeds and big brown seeds. In the present study, the fatty acid composition, content of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoid and inorganic ions in dimorphic seeds of the species collected in the field were measured. There was no significant difference in total oil content between black and brown seeds. Seed total oil content was approximately 19% based on dry weight. The most abundant fatty acid was linoleic acid, and the content was 76.3 and 70.5% of total fatty acids in black and brown seeds, respectively. Furthermore, the contents of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids and inorganic ions in brown seeds were higher than those in black seeds, which might be the mechanism of higher salt tolerance of brown seeds than black seeds. The ecological, physiological and genetic mechanisms of the different abilities of nutrition accumulation in black and brown seeds of S. salsa are also discussed and worthy to be investigated in the future.

Chemical Composition and Sources of Marine Aerosol over the Western North Pacific Ocean in Winter

Atmospheric deposition of long-range transported continental substances from natural and anthropogenic sources affects biogeochemical processes in marine systems. Emissions of sea spray contribute aerosol particles to the marine atmosphere. Despite the importance of continental dispersion and atmospheric processes involving aerosol particles within remote marine atmosphere, knowledge of the sources of various water-soluble ions is limited because of insufficient observations. Concentrations of Total suspended particulates (TSPs) and major inorganic ions (Cl−, Na+, SO42−, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, NO3−, NH4+), as well as organic nitrogen (ON-N) values, were measured in marine aerosol collected over the western north Pacific (WNP) during a cruise from 3 December 2014 to 13 March 2015. Aerosol samples were analyzed to determine their chemical characteristics and a source apportionment for this region and the continental influence on the open ocean when air masses are from continent in winter. TSP mass concentrations ranged from 14.1 to 136.0 μg/m3 with an average of 44.8 ± 28.1 μg/m3. Concentrations of TSPs and major ions were higher near the coast (close to Qingdao and Xiamen) and lower over the open ocean. The total mass of inorganic ions and organic nitrogen accounted for 51.1% of the total TSP. Cl− had highest concentrations among the major inorganic ions, followed by SO42−, NO3−, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, and NH4+, respectively. However, Cl− showed a deficit relative to Na+ in most samples, likely related to heterogeneous reactions within the marine atmosphere. Most SO42−, Mg2+, Ca2+, and K+ were from sea salt, while other major ions were from continental sources. The non-sea-salt (nss) fractions of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ were derived from continental crust, while nss-SO42− and NO3− were derived from anthropogenic sources. ON had several sources, including reactions of NOx with volatile organic compounds (anthropogenic sources) or NH3 with gaseous hydrocarbons, as well as crustal and marine biogenic sources.

Concentrations of Mercury and Other Inorganic Ions in Wet Precipitation Collected from a Mountain Mining Zone and an Urban Area in Central Mexico.

We measured and compared mercury (Hg) and other ions in rainwater collected in San Joaquin (mining zone) and Juriquilla (urban area), central Mexico, from 2009 to 2012. A total of 274 rainwater samples were collected and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, [Formula: see text] Cl-, [Formula: see text] Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Hg. Mercury concentrations in rainwater varied from 24.21 to 248.89 (x-bar = 86.97 ± 10.77) µg L- 1 in San Joaquin (mining zone) and 11.26 to 176.91 (x-bar = 81.51 ± 10.24) µg L- 1 in Juriquilla (urban area). Rainwater sample were collected over periods 1-3 days, depending upon precipitation frequency. Significant correlations (p < 0.05) were found between [Formula: see text] Cl-, [Formula: see text] Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Hg at the San Joaquin site. Significant correlations were obtained between [Formula: see text] Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Hg at the Juriquilla site. In order to determine if there were significant differences among each measured parameter in rainwater collected in San Joaquin and Juriquilla, Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to data. We emphasized that the distribution and concentrations of Hg and the studied ions in rainwater samples were affected by atmospheric dust and local meteorological conditions of wind-speed and direction.

Distribution characteristics of dissolved inorganic carbon in soil of typical estuarine wetlands in Jiaozhou Bay, China.

We examined the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) content, ion content, and soil physi-cal and chemical properties in Dagu River and Yanghe River estuary wetland of Jiaozhou Bay. Soil samples were collected by stratified sampling in the mudflat paralleled to the coastal zone and the river flat perpendicular to the coastal zone. Duncan method and Pearson correlation analysis were used to investigate the characteristics of soil DIC distribution and its driving factors. The results showed that the scouring action of water bodies led to the lowest content of soil DIC in the river estuary of mudflat, which showed an increasing trend with the increases of distance from the estuary. In river flat, the soil DIC content first decreased and then increased with the distance from the sea, which was influenced by human activities. Invasion of Spartina alterniflora significantly decreased soil DIC content, with its root transformation being the main reason for such decreases. The farming activities changed the environmental factors of aquaculture pond, and then changed the distribution of soil DIC. The surface soil of the pond had higher DIC content than that of the mudflat, while the other soil layers had lower DIC content than that of the mudflat. Soil DIC content was significantly positively correlated with soil salt content and total inorganic carbon content, and negatively correlated with soil pH.

Southwestern U.S. Biomass Burning Smoke Hygroscopicity: The Role of Plant Phenology, Chemical Composition, and Combustion Properties

AbstractBiomass burning emissions have substantially increased with continued warming and drying in the southwestern U.S., impacting air quality and atmospheric processes. To better quantify impacts of biomass burning aerosols, an extensive laboratory study of fresh smoke emissions was conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Laboratory burn experiments with selected native and invasive southwestern U.S. fuels were used to elucidate the role of fuel type, chemical composition, and ignition method on the hygroscopicity of smoke. Here we focus on a custom controlled relative humidity (RH) nephelometry system using the direct measurement of aerosol light scattering with two nephelometers—one at dry conditions and one at a controlled high RH (RH ~ 85%). Aerosol hygroscopicity was highly variable with the enhancement in light scattering coefficient in the range of 1.02 &lt; f(RH = 85%) &lt; 2.1 and corresponding to the kappa parameter (κneph) ranging from ~0 to 0.18. Hygroscopicity is determined primarily by the fuel's inorganic ion content. For example, invasive halophytes with high inorganic salt content exhibit much greater water uptake than native coniferous species with low inorganic content. Combustion temperature and phase, flaming or smoldering, play a secondary role in the water uptake of smoke. High‐temperature ignition methods create flaming conditions that enhance hygroscopicity while lower‐temperature smoldering conditions diminish hygroscopicity. Our results construct an empirical relation between κneph and the inorganic content of the fuel and smoke to predict water uptake.

Synthesis of (Bi,Pb)-2223 superconductor powder by pechini method

In this paper, we present a detailed route of synthesis to produce ceramic superconductor Bi1,6Pb0,4Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi,Pb)-2223 powder by Pechini method. The obtained polymeric precursor solution was produced by using inexpensive chemical reagents, which showed a great stability for three weeks with high concentration of BPSCCO inorganic ions. The crystallization kinetic of BPSCCO powder was investigated by thermal analysis (DSC/TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thermal treatment of the BPSCCO powder at different temperatures showed that complex phase equilibrium occurs to the system. The three superconductor phases seems to coexist in a large range of temperature, the Bi-2201 phase was crystallized around 500 oC and then, after 840 oC the desirable (Bi,Pb)-2223 phase appears with coexistence of the Bi-2212 phase at low quantity. Finally, the powder morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the results point to a typical plate like formation of the grains.

Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Water-soluble Inorganic Ions in Road Dust PM2.5 During Spring in Tianjin Using the Quadrat Sampling Method

In order to collect comprehensive information regarding the characteristics and sources of the water-soluble inorganic ions in road dust (RD) PM2.5 in Tianjin, samples of road dust were collected in April 2015 in Tianjin, and then re-suspended on filters using a NK-ZXF sampler. The concentrations of the major water-soluble inorganic ions were analyzed by ion chromatography. A correlation analysis, ratio method, and principal component analysis were used to analyze the sources of RD PM2.5. The results showed that the total water-soluble inorganic ion concentration in Tianjin accounted for 6.13%±2.32%, varying with different road types. Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ showed high homology. NO3-/SO42- revealed that the main source of PM2.5 was mostly attributed to fixed sources. The principal component analysis showed that the main sources of RD PM2.5 in Tianjin were coal combustion, mobile sources, biomass burning, and construction dust.

In this study, the trends in heterogeneous aqueous reaction in continuous haze episodes were investigated by an in-depth case analysis. The highly time-resolved measurements of water-soluble inorganic ions of PM2.5 were conducted in a suburban of Shanghai, China, and continuous haze episodes, which occurred from Feb. 18 to Feb. 28, were selected as studied cases. Results showed that fine particle pollution in Baoshan was serious. High concentrations of secondary inorganic aerosol ions and the higher sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) on haze days indicated enhanced conversions from SO2 and NOx to their corresponding particulate phases. The high-nitrate haze episode and the high-sulfate haze episode were identified. Further simulations revealed that the PM2.5 particles had strong acidity during the high-nitrate and high-sulfate haze episodes whether they were calculated by E-AIM 4 or by ISORROPIA II. It was found that particulate liquid water was more sensitive to nitrate than sulfate, and played significant roles in the heterogeneous aqueous reactions of NO2 and secondary nitrate formation during haze episodes, especially in the high-sulfate haze episode. Further analysis indicated that the high-nitrate haze episode favoured the occurrence of heterogeneous aqueous phase oxidation of SO2, and the more water was in the particles, the more SO2 was converted to sulfate aerosols. This work provides an important field measurement-based evidence for understanding the important contributions of the heterogeneous aqueous reactions to secondary aerosol pollution and the tendencies of heterogeneous aqueous reactions in the formation of secondary sulfate and nitrate aerosols in suburban Shanghai.

Vertical Distributional Characteristics of Inorganic Ions of PM2.5 at Mt. Huashan, Inland China

PM2.5 was simultaneously collected using a high-volume sampler at 4 h intervals from the mountainside and the foot of the mountain in the Mt. Huashan region, inland China, during the summer of 2016, and the samples were analyzed for inorganic ions, to investigate the chemical characteristics and vertical distribution of the fine particles in the region. The results showed that the concentrations of PM2.5 were (46.9±38.2) μg·m-3 and (76.0±44.3) μg·m-3 on the mountainside and at the foot of Mt. Huashan, respectively. The concentrations of inorganic ions in PM2.5 was higher at the foot of the mountain than on the mountainside, with the order of the mass concentrations of the major ionic species being SO42- > NO3- > NH4+ > Ca2+. Among all the inorganic ions, SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+ are the dominant species, accounting for 89% and 85% of the total, on the mountainside and at the foot, respectively. The fine particulate NH4+ existed mostly in the forms of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 on the mountainside, and in the forms of NH4HSO4 and NH4NO3 at the foot of the mountain. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 and its major components on the mountainside showed clear diurnal variations, with maximums between 12:00-16:00, mainly due to the transport of the pollutants from the ground surface by the planetary boundary layer height variation and the valley breeze. In contrast, the diurnal variations of PM2.5 and its major components at the foot are characterized with two maxima, peaking between 08:00-12:00 in the daytime and 00:00-04:00 in the nighttime, respectively, mainly due to the increased emissions from both the morning rush-hour traffic and the nighttime on-road heavy-duty vehicles. Acidity of the fine particles was estimated by using the equivalent ratio of anions to cations and the thermodynamic equilibrium model ISORROPIA Ⅱ. Both methods showed that the acidity of PM2.5 at the ground surface site is stronger than that on the mountainside in the Mt. Huashan region.

The mechanisms and process of acephate degradation by hydroxyl radical and hydrated electron

The degradation process of acephate in aqueous solution with •OH and produced by 60Co-γ irradiation and electron pulse radiolysis was studied in the present paper. In the aqueous solution, acephate reacted with and transformed to transient species which can absorb weakly in the wavelength range of 300–400 nm and decay very fast. According to the decay of hydrated electron, the reaction rate constant of and acephate is (3.51 ± 0.076) × 109 dm3·mol−1·s−1. The transient species produced in the reaction of •OH and acephate do not distinctly absorb the light in the wavelength range of 300–700 nm, so the decay and kinetics of the transient species cannot determinedirectly. The competing reaction of KSCN oracephate with •OH were studied to obtain the reaction rate constant of •OH and acephate, which is (9.1 ± 0.11) × 108 dm3·mol−1·s−1. Although acetylamide and inorganic ions were determined in the products of the reaction of acephate with •OH or , the concentration of inorganic ions in the products of the reaction of acephate with •OH is higher than that in the product of the reaction of acephate with . Moreover, there were sulfide in the products of the reaction of acephatewith . The degradation pathways of acephate by •OH and were also proposed based on the products from GC-MS.
