Innovating digital curbside management mindfully with IoT technologies

Cities worldwide are rethinking the use of curbside space to balance accessibility, sustainability, and urban liveability. Yet, increasingly complex curbside regulations face low enforcement capacities and high misuse. This undermines policy objectives for efficient goods movement, sustainable urban mobility, and equitable access to the curbside. In response, municipalities explore static Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to digitalize curbside management. However, past implementations of static IoT technologies, such as in-ground sensors and cameras, have often failed to achieve long-term operation. This study investigates how static IoT technologies can support digital curbside management while recognizing local contexts. We examine this question through the lens of innovating mindfully, which conceptualizes innovating as a context-sensitive process that balances outside experience with decision-making grounded in local facts and specifics. Combining this lens with expert interviews and Design Science Research, we derive 16 principles and testable propositions for innovation adoption in the three phases that entertain outside experience: comprehension, adoption, and implementation. Our results show that IoT technologies are initially most suitable for enforcement challenges in no-parking, time-limited, and permitted parking. These lay the foundation for future user-oriented services. We thus propose an iterative process for innovating mindfully with IoT technologies. It allows cities to assess feasibility and avoid premature commitment, while iteratively building internal sensitivity and external legitimacy. A scalable RNAi nanoparticle approach for lethal gene targeting in the German cockroach.

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a major urban pest managed primarily with chemical insecticides, raising concerns over resistance and environmental impact. RNA interference (RNAi) offers a species-specific and sustainable alternative, but its utility depends on identifying lethal gene targets and developing efficient delivery systems. We developed an oral-induced nanoparticle-delivered gene silencing (OI-NDGS) platform using star polycation (SPc) nanocarriers to stabilize and deliver dsRNAs in B. germanica. Twelve candidate genes, selected from lethal Tribolium castaneum homologs, were tested. Efficient transcript knockdown was achieved for all targets. Four genes (Bgsrp54k, Bgrpt3a, Bgrpt3b and Bgrpn7) produced 100% mortality with severe molting and growth defects, whereas Bghsc70-3 and Bgpp-α also yielded <7% cumulative survival at the 40-day endpoint. The identification of duplicated rpt3 transcripts in B. germanica underscores evolutionary divergence and expands proteasome-related targets for RNAi. The present study highlights species-specific lethal genes in cockroaches and validates a scalable SPc-based oral delivery system, together establishing a practical framework for RNAi biopesticide development. These advances provide both new biological insights and applied innovations for sustainable urban pest management. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), the African big-headed ant, is one of the most significant invasive species and has become dominant in disturbed environments worldwide. Its presence poses serious threats to agriculture and biodiversity, highlighting the need for innovative and sustainable pest management strategies. One promising direction is the use of positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) viruses as biocontrol agents. This study investigates a novel control approach by integrating Pheidole megacephala virus 3 (PmV3), a member of Picornavirales, into alginate hydrogel as a viral delivery system for P. megacephala. Alginate hydrogel effectively served as a stable and environmentally friendly carrier, enabling controlled release of +ssRNA viruses over time. Despite replication occurring primarily in worker ants, PmV3 infections were detected in queens and brood by Day 17 after inoculation, indicating successful colony-level viral transmission. Reverse-transcription RT-PCR confirmed viral presence and tagged RT-PCR verified active replication within workers. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses showed significantly reduced worker ant survival in four of 10 treated colonies, demonstrating measurable pathogenic effects of the viral treatment. This study demonstrates the successful incorporation and delivery of +ssRNA viruses using alginate hydrogels and provides clear evidence of viral transmission, replication and colony-level impacts in P. megacephala. These findings highlight the potential of virus-loaded hydrogels as a promising, environmentally friendly tool for developing biologically based control strategies against invasive P. megacephala populations. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Kiwifruit presents a growing global health concern, characterized by IgE-mediated type I hypersensitivity reactions ranging from mild oral symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. This allergy is driven by five major allergenic proteins (Act d 1, 2, 5, 8, and 12), which exhibit significant cross-reactivity, contributing to conditions such as latex-fruit syndrome and pollen-food allergy syndrome. The structural heterogeneity and epitope variations among kiwifruit allergens directly influence the diversity and severity of clinical reactions. Accurate epitope mapping may improve diagnostic accuracy, clarifies cross-reactivity mechanisms and assist in risk assessment, while food processing techniques modify allergenic protein structures. Understanding how processing affects epitope accessibility is essential for developing low-allergenic kiwifruit products and improving food safety. This review synthesizes current understanding of kiwifruit allergy, emphasizing the structural and immunological basis of its major allergens, and assesses how food processing can mitigate allergenicity to guide clinical management and product innovation.

SUS audit aided by natural language processing: A comparative evaluation of BERT models in the analysis of health news

Established in 1988, Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) faces significant challenges regarding funding, regional inequalities, and resource oversight, necessitating innovative management solutions. Current auditing processes remain inefficient, as manually detecting irregularities within vast volumes of documents is both time-consuming and costly. This study applies Named Entity Recognition (NER) and text classification techniques to analyze health news relevant to SUS audits. We compare the performance of BERT, BERT-CRF, and ModBERTBr models to identify the most effective approach for optimizing content selection, thereby aiding investigations and combating corruption. A controlled experimental design was employed, following a pipeline of tokenization, label alignment, supervised training, and statistical analysis. Models were evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, F1-score, and Mean Training Time (MTT). In the NER task, BERT-CRF demonstrated superior performance, achieving the best results in recall (0.880), precision (0.855), and F1-score (0.860). Conversely, the standard BERT model achieved the best overall performance in text classification, significantly outperforming ModBERTBr across all metrics.

Unveiling Gut Homeostasis Disruption in Sepsis: Towards an Integrated Mechanistic and Translational Roadmap.

Sepsis, a life-threatening clinical syndrome precipitated by a maladaptive host response to infection, is associated with substantial morbidity and high mortality rates. Gastrointestinal injury has gained recognition as a pivotal factor driving sepsis progression. Pathogen invasion incites oxidative stress and inflammatory cascades, leading to compromised intestinal barrier integrity and dysregulated local immunity. This results in increased gut permeability and bacterial translocation, fostering a state that can be described as 'enteric sepsis'. Moreover, multi-organ crosstalk via the gut-liver and gut-brain axes substantially amplifies systemic inflammation. The pathophysiology of sepsis-induced intestinal injury is not yet fully elucidated, and clinically applicable biomarkers or early diagnostic tools remain scarce. Targeted therapeutic strategies have yet to be validated in clinical practice. This article presents a comprehensive review of recent advances in the pathophysiology and underlying mechanisms of sepsis-induced intestinal injury, focusing on the signalling networks that disrupt intestinal homeostasis and immune equilibrium. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying key pathways and candidate biomarkers for early diagnosis and intervention. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of targeted intestinal-protective agents is evaluated, integrating insights from traditional Chinese medicine to propose a combined treatment strategy. Ultimately, this review aims to establish a translational framework to advance clinical management and therapeutic innovation for sepsis-associated intestinal dysfunction.

Integrating Psychological, Pedagogical, and Managerial Theories in Coaching: A Systematic Literature Review

This study aims to systematically examine and synthesize the theoretical foundations underlying contemporary coaching practices by integrating psychological, pedagogical, and managerial perspectives. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, this study analyzed 44 national and international peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025. Data were selected through transparent inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify dominant theories and integrative patterns in coaching research. The findings reveal that psychological theories such as Self-Determination Theory, Psychological Safety, Positive Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral approaches, and Transformative Learning emphasize intrinsic motivation, trust, and reflective change. Pedagogical frameworks, including Andragogy, Dialogic and Inclusive Pedagogy, and Technology-Enhanced Learning, highlight experiential, learner-centered, and culturally responsive coaching processes. From a managerial perspective, Systems Theory, Managerial Coaching, Organizational Change, Innovation Management, and Sustainable Leadership position coaching as a strategic mechanism for performance improvement and organizational sustainability. The synthesis proposes an Interdisciplinary Coaching Model grounded in evidence-based coaching, integrating motivation, learning, and organizational alignment. This study contributes theoretically by consolidating cross-disciplinary coaching frameworks and practically by offering a coherent foundation for designing adaptive, culturally sensitive, and sustainable coaching interventions. The AI disruption paradox: when technological threats stimulate green service innovation through employee crafting

ABSTRACT Although research has shown increasing interest in employee innovation amid technological change, the influence of AI disruption threat on green service innovative behavior remains underexplored, particularly regarding the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions. Drawing on event system theory, this study develops a moderated mediation model in which green crafting serves as a mediator between AI disruption threat and green service innovative behavior, and AI rumination moderates this mediated relationship. Using three-wave time-lagged survey data from 416 employees in the Chinese hotel industry, we found that green crafting mediates the positive effect of AI disruption threat on green service innovative behavior. Moreover, AI rumination weakens this mediating effect. These findings provide new insights into when and how technological threats can drive green innovation, enriching the existing body of knowledge in innovation management and sustainability.

Checklist of Hemipteran Insects Collected on Cucurbitaceous Crops of Punjab, India

Cucurbits are warm-season crops that constitute the most widely cultivated category of summer vegetables. The family Cucurbitaceae comprises 120 genera and 800 species, including 31 genera and 94 species found in India. India is the second-largest global producer of vegetables, accounting for approximately 15% of the world's overall output. The current survey-cum-collection study illustrates the current status and taxonomic characteristics of hemipteran species visiting cucurbitaceous vegetables in the state of Punjab, India, and provides a checklist of these insects. In total, 14 insect species in the order Hemiptera were observed in eight families and 11 genera, including Aleyrodidae and Coreidae (1 genus, 1 species), Geocoridae and Lygaeidae (3 genera and 3 species), Pentatomidae, Pseudococcidae (1 genus, 1 species), Pyrrhocoridae, and Reduviidae (2 genera and 2 species). This checklist provides basic information about the current status of regional biodiversity in Punjab’s agricultural systems, which in turn will help formulate innovative integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. Species-wise morphometric observations, key diagnostic features, distribution, and host records in India are provided based on literature searches and field observations.

ABSTRACT Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping logistics and supply chain operations through automation, optimisation, and intelligent decision-making. Meanwhile, Physical Internet (PI) is emerging as a revolutionary paradigm for a digitalised, hyper-connected, modular, and sustainable global logistics network. The integration of AI and PI is poised to deliver enhanced efficiency, sustainability, and resilience. This study investigates how AI contributes to logistics operation management under the PI framework, and what new requirements and challenges arise from this integration. We conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis of 117 publications, focusing on three dimensions: AI-driven operational automation, AI-augmented optimisation, and Generative AI in knowledge management and service innovation. Findings indicate that while AI has achieved notable progress in many logistics’ applications and cases, its integration within the PI paradigm still lacks research. Accordingly, we propose several research avenues, identify key research gaps, to advance research and applications towards AI-empowered PI scenario.

A theoretical-calculation-guided strategy for designing energetic composite materials with enhanced thermal conductivity by adjusting interfacial interactions.

Safety issues arising from inefficient heat dissipation in energetic materials demand innovative thermal management strategies. Herein, we proposed a strategy for guiding the design of energetic composite materials with enhanced thermal conductivity based on molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory. Based on this strategy, suitable fillers for improving the thermal conductivity of different kinds of energetic materials could be quickly selected and a way to further balance the thermal conductivity and filler content could be figured out. Results showed that hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNSs) are suitable fillers, which can improve the thermal conductivity of the well-known energetic material 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX) by about 8.16%, and this could be further increased to 30.48% by doubling the amount of h-BNNSs. More importantly, the thermal conductivity of HMX can be enhanced substantially by adjusting the interfacial interactions between fillers and energetic materials without doubling the amount of h-BNNS. This improvement is achieved by using hydroxylated h-BNNSs (h-BNNSs-OH) as the filler, which greatly strengthens interfacial interactions through hydrogen bonding, reduces interfacial thermal resistance, and facilitates phonon transport. This work may provide insights into the development of an atomic-scale design strategy for thermally stable energetic materials through synergistic interfacial chemistry and phonon engineering.

Strategy for Ultranarrow Light Down-Conversion for Displays Based on Bicolor-Emitting 2D Colloidal Heterostructures.

The demand for ultranarrow spectral emission below 10 nm is critical for next-generation displays. Although current colloidal nanocrystals are successful in light down-conversion applications, they fall short in matching the stringent color purity requirements set by standards like Rec. 2020. Achieving such narrow linewidths through material engineering alone remains elusive, necessitating innovative light management strategies that avoid optical losses and maintain device efficiency. Here, we present a novel 2D colloidal heterostructure design, combining a CdSe core nanoplatelet, a CdS crown, and a CdZnS shell, to achieve bright bicolor emission in the solid state (green/red) emission with tunable intensity ratios controlled by excitation power (either optical or electrical). Integration of these nanoplatelets into a dielectric cavity further narrows the emission linewidth to sub-2 nm while enhancing the photoluminescence intensity by up to 200 times, meeting the Rec. 2020 color purity targets. This approach paves the way for a strategy avoiding complex laser-based solutions.

Development of advanced bioinformatic profiles to improve the detection and functional understanding of fungal acid phosphatases.

We have retrieved approximately 9,000 protein sequences annotated as fungal acid phosphatase or phytase from the UniProtKB database. Following stringent quality filtering, a curated dataset comprising 3,058 high-confidence sequences was assembled. Phylogenetic analysis resolved these enzymes into eight distinct clades, representing distinct groups of fungal acid phosphatases: purple acid phosphatases, phytases, and groups containing both phytases and acid phosphatases annotations. Based on this classification, we have developed three representative protein profiles referred to as Prf-A-Fungal_phos, Prf-B-Fungal_phos, and Prf-C-Fungal_phos, each designed to capture the phylogenetic and functional diversity of these enzyme families. Heat-map analyses confirmed the breadth and high specificity of these profiles. Application of these profiles to public protein and metagenomic databases enabled the identification of hundreds of previously uncharacterized fungal proteins, with a broad taxonomic distribution and notable prevalence in the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota phyla. Functional validation through heterologous expression of selected candidates in Saccharomyces cerevisiae confirmed their phosphatase activity, supporting the accuracy of the in silico predictions. By integrating large-scale bioinformatics with experimental validation, this study provides robust tools for the discovery of novel fungal phosphatases and for investigation of their ecological roles in nutrient-limited environments.IMPORTANCEFungal acid phosphatases are critical enzymes in global phosphorus cycling, yet no dedicated bioinformatic tools exist to comprehensively identify and classify them across fungal diversity. Here, we present the first PROSITE generalized profiles specific to fungal acid phosphatases, derived from a curated data set of over 3,000 high-confidence sequences spanning eight phylogenetic groups. These profiles exhibit high specificity and sensitivity, enabling the detection of hundreds of previously uncharacterized proteins from public protein databases. Experimental expression of representative candidates in Saccharomyces cerevisiae confirmed their phosphatase activity, validating our in silico predictions. By bridging large-scale bioinformatics with functional validation, this study delivers robust resources to uncover novel fungal phosphatases and to explore their ecological roles in nutrient-limited environments. The developed profiles will advance metagenomic annotation, support soil and environmental microbiology research, and foster biotechnological innovation in sustainable phosphorus management.

Dynamic Population Breeding: A Structured Colony Management Strategy to Improve Reproductive Performance and Early Survival in Nothobranchius furzeri.

The African turquoise killifish, Nothobranchius furzeri, has emerged as an important vertebrate model for aging research due to its naturally short lifespan and hallmarks of aging. However, these characteristics create challenges for colony management, such as high breeder turnover, rapid generational change, and the risk of inbreeding or unintended selection in closed laboratory populations. Since new individuals cannot be introduced from the wild or purchased from commercial laboratory animal breeders, maintaining genetically stable laboratory stocks requires carefully controlled breeding strategies. Here, we describe an innovative colony management approach termed dynamic population breeding (DPB) and evaluated its performance in two commonly used laboratory lines with different lifespans, GRZ-D and MZCS-08/122. DPB integrates several key principles: the maintenance of overlapping breeding age cohorts, harem-based breeding groups, continuous monitoring of clutch quality and quantity, and the controlled use of embryonic diapause for flexible embryo storage and synchronized hatching. Embryos from multiple breeding groups were pooled, stored in diapause stage II, and hatched at defined time points to generate new cohorts while avoiding sibling-only populations. Using this approach, we systematically analyzed reproductive performance, embryo quality, hatching success, and survival in laboratory populations. Fertilization rates and clutch sizes remained within stable ranges across the reproductive period, although an age-dependent decline in fertilization efficiency was observed in both lines. Quality control at the clutch level allowed early identification and exclusion of low-performing breeding groups. Importantly, implementation of DPB reduced variability between cohorts and improved early-life survival of offspring, particularly during the first weeks after hatching. Overall, DPB provides a practical framework for maintaining stable and robust killifish colonies while minimizing unintended selection and inbreeding. By integrating diapause biology with structured breeding management, this strategy enhances reproducibility and sustainability of N. furzeri populations used in aging research.
