Modeling for nano risk assessment and management: The development of integrated governance tools and the potential role of technology assessment

In nano risk governance, we observe a trend toward coupling and integrating a variety of computational models into integrated risk governance tools. This article discusses the development and design of such integrated tools as ‘nano risk governance imaginaries in the making.’ Using an illustrative example, the SUNDS tool, we show how the tool manifests conceptual shifts from risk to innovation governance, a technocratic evidence culture based on the quantification of risks, and an envisioned application in industrial innovation management. This conceptualization runs the risk of narrowing the view of nano risks and cementing the widely lamented democratic deficit in risk governance. We therefore conclude that the development and application of integrated governance tools are highly relevant for technology assessment (TA) and TA should actively engage in their development processes.

Trends in Innovation Management Research in India - An Analysis of Publications for the Period 1991-2013

With increasing recognition of the importance of technological innovations in economic development, scholarship on innovation management - seeking to understand the context, process and management of technological innovations, as distinct from their purely scientific, engineering and technical aspects - has been steadily rising as well. This field of research has been instrumental in discovering important concepts that have subsequently informed innovation management in industry, public R&D and academia. In the past two decades, India has also significantly advanced the pace of technological innovations, as evident from patents filed out of the country. However, there is little understanding of whether research on innovation management in the country has also witnessed a similar trend. The present article seeks to address this gap. We looked at the abstracts and keywords of 58 articles related to technology and innovations in India published in 21 journals during the period 1991-2013. We conclude that the trend is not very encouraging. We discuss its implications and offer suggestions for future research.

IT‐supported innovation management in the automotive supplier industry to drive idea generation and leverage innovation

SUMMARYInnovative product development is highly dependent on new product ideas and product information. This especially applies to companies that obtain their competitive advantages by technological lead like the automotive supplier industry. Innovation management in these industries has to focus on an efficient idea generation, implementation and capitalisation, and on technology tracking. This paper gives an insight into the industry‐sector‐specific characteristics of innovation management within the automotive supplier industry, and outlines a basic scheme of an innovation management system that aims at improving the existing innovation management at the automotive supplier Kolbenschmidt Pierburg AG. Active management of the early innovation phases in steel application research for the construction sector

AbstractThis article reports on how the steel industry in Germany can systematically improve the early phases of its cooperative pre‐competitive application research in the construction sector. The aim of this work is to increase innovation success through a targeted lead‐in to the innovation processes. It makes use of various models from industrial innovation management, experience in research management for a current project on the sustainability of steel in the construction sector and the results from a survey of the research institutes participating in the project. As a result, a model for the systematic management of the early innovation phases in steel application research for the construction industry is presented. The model supports the participants from industry and the academic sector in finding, formulating and implementing new innovation ideas.

Aprendizagem Tecnológica e Inovação Industrial em Economias Emergentes: uma Breve Contribuição para o Desenho e Implementação de Estudos Empíricos e Estratégias no Brasil

O tema estratégia de inovação industrial entrou formalmente na agenda de discussão e ação governamental no Brasil no final dos anos 1960. Desde então, tem havido uma profusão de estudos baseados em descrições, análises e propostas relativas a estratégias de inovação industrial no País. A despeito do grande mérito dos vários trabalhos neste campo no Brasil, ainda há uma escassez de contribuições conceituais e, principalmente, gerenciais voltadas para o aprimoramento do desenho e da implementação de estudos empíricos e de tais estratégias. Por isso, este artigo tem seu foco em duas tarefas: a primeira é clarificar certas definições relativas ao desenho e implementação de estudos empíricos e de estratégias de inovação industrial a partir da perspectiva de aprendizagem tecnológica no contexto de economias emergentes; a segunda é apresentar métricas associadas à operacionalização de tais estudos e estratégias, particularmente no Brasil. Espera-se com isso contribuir para ampliar a compreensão sobre o intricado processo de desenvolvimento tecnológico na indústria, no contexto de economias emergentes e, assim, auxiliar pesquisadores e gestores envolvidos com a gestão da inovação industrial no Brasil.
