Variable sensitivity of clinical Candida auris strains to Biocides: implications for infection control in Healthcare Settings

PurposeCandida auris, a multidrug-resistant yeast, poses significant challenges in healthcare settings due to its ability to form biofilms and resistance to common disinfectants. Understanding its susceptibility to biocides used in hospital disinfection practices is crucial for infection control. We investigated the biocide sensitivity of eight clinical C. auris strains from different patients and one reference strain (CDC B11903) using the biocide activity tests.MethodsSpecies identification was confirmed through MALDI-TOF MS, while clade differentiation and phylogenetic classification were determined via whole-genome sequencing. Biofilm formation was assessed using the MTT assay. Antifungal susceptibilities were tested according to CLSI standards. The effectiveness of biocides, including chlorine, chlorhexidine, and benzalkonium chloride, was evaluated through broth microdilution following CLSI standards and quantitative suspension and carrier tests, following EN standards.ResultsAll clinical strains were identified as clade 1, and the reference strain as clade 4, with all exhibiting biofilm formation. Clade 1 strains showed resistance to fluconazole, with MIC values ranging from 8 to 32 µg/ml, while being susceptible to other antifungals. Broth microdilution MIC assays for biocides demonstrated that all strains exhibited resistance to benzalkonium chloride. Chlorine and chlorhexidine showed variable efficacy, dependent on concentration and environmental cleanliness. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers demonstrated effectiveness against C. auris from the first minute of application.ConclusionThe study highlights the variable susceptibility of C.auris to different biocides, underscoring the challenge in eradicating this pathogen from healthcare environments. Our findings advocate for the careful selection of disinfectants in hospital settings, emphasizing the need for high-concentration chlorine and chlorhexidine solutions to combat C. auris, even in especially clean environments.

Exploring the Relationship between Knowledge and Attitudes, Adherence and Confidence on Hand Hygiene Practices Among Thai Nursing Students

Background: Hand hygiene plays a crucial role in infection control in healthcare settings, but there is a concerning gap in compliance rates among healthcare workers globally. Nursing students, who will form a substantial part of the future healthcare workforce, are key to effective hand hygiene practices. A significant educational gap in hand hygiene exists globally, especially in Asia, including Thailand. Research on nursing students’ knowledge, attitude, adherence to, and confidence in hand hygiene is still limited, despite their frequent non-compliance with standard protocols. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the correlations and associated factors between knowledge, attitudes, adherence to, and confidence in hand hygiene practices among first-year nursing students at a Thai nursing college.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with all 116 first-year nursing students from Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Thailand. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and multiple logistic regression analysis.Results: The results show that only 46.6% of students demonstrated good knowledge of hand hygiene, but a higher percentage showed positive attitudes (51.7%) and adherence (55.2%). A majority (76.7%) had good confidence in their hand hygiene practices. Positive correlations were observed between knowledge and attitude, attitude and adherence, and adherence and confidence. Male students generally had better knowledge, while those with lower GPAs tended to have higher confidence in hand hygiene. The findings of this study are in line with previous studies, indicating that knowledge does not always lead to positive attitudes or adherence to hand hygiene. Also, confidence is necessary for effective hand hygiene practices.Conclusions: This study highlights the factors related to hand hygiene practices among Thai nursing students and emphasizes the need for comprehensive, culturally sensitive educational strategies. Future research should consider various contextual factors, such as gender differences and academic performance, to enhance hand hygiene practices among nursing students.

The spatial and temporal effect of electrochromic windows on indoor and human microbiome in an inpatient hospital.

Improving the hospital environment and developing novel disinfection strategies are critical for infection control in healthcare settings. In this study, we explored the effects of electrochromic (EC) windows on indoor and patient microbiome in an inpatient hospital. Hematology-Oncology patients at the University of Vermont Medical Center. We conducted a prospective study in ten occupied patient rooms. Five of the patient rooms had active EC windows that tint dynamically to control for heat and glare, and the other five rooms had deactivated EC windows that simulated traditional windows and blinds. Samples were collected one day before patient admission as baseline and on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th day of the patient stay. Total bacterial abundance and bacterial community structure were determined through quantitative PCR and 16s rRNA Illumina MiSeq sequencing, respectively. Patient rooms with active EC windows had significantly lower light intensity and temperature than traditional patient rooms with blinds. The absolute bacterial abundance and diversities on windows were significantly lower in rooms with EC windows and the bacterial composition changed after one day EC window activation. Compared to baseline, relative abundance of the Staphylococcus genus was significantly lower on EC window surface during the five-day experiment. In contrast, the air microbiome was more diverse in rooms with EC windows. Active electrochromic (EC) windows in patient rooms result in lower light intensity and temperature, reduced bacterial abundance and diversities on window surfaces, and a more diverse air microbiome, informing future healthcare design.

The impact of enhanced screening for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in an acute care hospital in South Korea

BackgroundCarbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) poses a significant challenge to infection control in healthcare settings. Active screening is recommended to prevent intra-hospital CPE transmission.MethodsCPE screening was initiated at a 660-bed hospital in South Korea in September 2018, targeting patients previously colonized/infected or admitted to outside healthcare facilities (HCFs) within 1 month. Universal intensive care unit (ICU) screening was performed at the time of admission. After a hospital-wide CPE outbreak in July-September 2019, the screening program was enhanced by extending the indications (admission to any HCF within 6 months, receipt of hemodialysis) with weekly screening of ICU patients. The initial screening method was changed from screening cultures to the Xpert Carba-R assay. The impact was assessed by comparing the CPE incidence per 1000 admissions before (phase 1, September 2018-August 2019) and after instituting the enhanced screening program (phase 2, September 2019-December 2020).ResultsA total of 13,962 (2,149 and 11,813 in each phase) were screened as indicated, among 49,490 inpatients, and monthly screening compliance increased from 18.3 to 93.5%. Compared to phase 1, the incidence of screening positive patients increased from 1.2 to 2.3 per 1,000 admissions (P = 0.005) during phase 2. The incidence of newly detected CPE patients was similar (3.1 vs. 3.4, P = 0.613) between two phases, but the incidence of hospital-onset CPE patients decreased (1.9 vs. 1.1, P = 0.018). A significant decrease was observed (0.5 to 0.1, P = 0.014) in the incidence of patients who first confirmed CPE positive through clinical cultures without a preceding positive screening. Compared to phase 1, the median exposure duration and number of CPE contacts were also markedly reduced in phase 2: 10.8 days vs. 1 day (P < 0.001) and 11 contacts vs. 1 contact (P < 0.001), respectively. During phase 2, 42 additional patients were identified by extending the admission screening indications (n = 30) and weekly in-ICU screening (n = 12).ConclusionsThe enhanced screening program enabled us to identify previously unrecognized CPE patients in a rapid manner and curtailed a hospital-wide CPE outbreak. As CPE prevalence increases, risk factors for CPE colonization can broaden, and hospital prevention strategies should be tailored to the changing local CPE epidemiology.

How MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry Technology Contributes to Microbial Infection Control in Healthcare Settings.

Healthcare settings have been utilizing matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) since 2010. MALDI-TOF MS has various benefits over the conventional method of biochemical identification, including ease of use, speed, accuracy, and low cost. This approach can solve many of the obstacles to identifying bacteria, fungi and viruses. As technology advanced, more and more databases kept track of spectra, allowing species with similar morphological, genotypic, and biochemical traits to be identified. Using MALDI-TOF MS for identification has become more accurate and quicker due to advances in sample preparation and database enrichment. Rapid sample detection and colony identification using MALDI-TOF MS have produced promising results. A key application of MALDI-TOF MS is quickly identifying highly virulent and drug-resistant diseases. Here, we present a review of the scientific literature assessing the effectiveness of MALDI-TOF MS for locating clinically relevant pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses. MALDI-TOF MS is a useful strategy for locating clinical pathogens, however, it also has some drawbacks. A small number of spectra in the database and inherent similarities among organisms can make it difficult to distinguish between different species, which can result in misidentifications. The majority of the time additional testing may correct these problems, which happen very seldom. In conclusion, infectious illness diagnosis and clinical care are being revolutionized by the use of MALDI-TOF MS in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

790. Evaluation of an Enhanced CPE Screening Program in an Acute Care Hospital in South Korea

BackgroundCarbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) poses a great challenge in infection control in healthcare settings. A screening and contact precautions are recommended to prevent the spread of CPE among patients. However, screening strategies differ among countries and healthcare facilities. MethodsIn September 2018, we launched a CPE screening program at a 660-bed hospital in South Korea, which targeted previously colonized patients, patients with history of admission < 1 month or transferred patients or ICU-admitted patients. Once patients were identified to have CPE, they were isolated in a single room. After a CPE outbreak in July-Aug 2019, the enhanced screening program was implemented, which included patients with additional risk factors (exposure to hospitals in the past 6 months, receipt of hemodialysis or invasive procedures or rehabilitation) combined with weekly screening in ICU-admitted patients. Screening methods changed from two consecutive rectal screening swabs with chromogenic agar to initial screening with Xpert-Carba-R PCR, followed by one or two consecutive tests with chromogenic agar. We compared the CPE incidence in screening and clinical cultures before and after the enhanced screening program introduction (Sep 2018-Nov 2020). ResultsA total of 14,318 (2,178 vs. 12,140) were screened among 49,980 admitted patients and screening compliance increased from 18.6% to 94.5%. The number of CPE detection increased from 44 to 154 cases and the proportion of CPE-positive screening per 1000 admissions increased 0.6 to 2.2. However, the number of clinical CPE cultures decreased from 11 to 3 (Figure). Among screened patients, time-to-positivity was markedly reduced by 1.9 days (2.96 vs. 1.02 days) during the post-period. Additional 70 patients were detected: 36 due to serial screening in the ICUs and 34 due to enhanced on-admission screening. Factors significantly associated with positive screening were previous exposure to hospital (OR 3.5; 95% CI 1.7-7.1) and receipt of hemodialysis (OR 4.3; 95%CI 1.9-9.2). CPE isolates and carbapenemase genes were diverse (Figure). Trends in CPE detection in screening and clinical samples (upper), and bacterial species with detected carbapenemase genes (lower). ConclusionThe study results showed that the enhanced screening program enabled us to identify the previously undetected CPE colonized patients and to decrease clinical CPE cultures. Hand Hygiene Knowledge and Perception among the Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Qassim, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Hand hygiene is among the most important factors of infection control in healthcare settings. Healthcare workers are the primary source of hospital-acquired infection. We assessed the current state of hand hygiene knowledge, perception, and practice among the healthcare workers in Qassim, Saudi Arabia. In this cross-sectional study, we used the hand hygiene knowledge and perception questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization. Knowledge and perceptions were classified into good (80–100%), moderate (60–79%), and poor (<60% score). The majority of the healthcare workers had moderate knowledge (57.8%) and perception (73.4%) of hand hygiene. Males were less likely to have moderate/good knowledge compared to females (OR: 0.52, p < 0.05). Private healthcare workers were less likely (OR: 0.33, p < 0.01) to have moderate/good perceptions compared to the government healthcare workers. Healthcare workers who received training on hand hygiene were more likely to have good/moderate perception (OR: 3.2, p < 0.05) and to routinely use alcohol-based hand rubs (OR: 3.8, p < 0.05) than the ones without such training. Physicians are more likely (OR: 4.9, p < 0.05) to routinely use alcohol-based hand rubs than technicians. Our research highlighted gaps in hand hygiene knowledge, perception and practice among healthcare workers in Qassim, Saudi Arabia and the importance of training in this regard.

Aerosol Management in Dentistry: An Update for Safe Covid-19 Clinical Practice

Patient safety and health worker safety from infectious diseases as well as occupational hazards is of utmost importance in every field of medicine. Bioaerosols and splatters generated by air syringes, ultrasonic scalers and high-speed turbine handpieces during dental treatment pose a potential hazard of infection not only to the patients but, to the dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants as well as other healthcare workers. Severe infectious diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), influenza, measles, tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV AIDS can be transmitted through aerosols. With the emergence of β-coronavirus (COVID-19), questions concerning the protection from such viral transmission in dental hospital setting have arisen due to close contact and its transmission through the exposure of saliva, blood and other body fluids. Guidelines from regulatory organizations such as CDC regarding infection control in healthcare settings and infection prevention practices should be strictly followed.A systematic electronic search with relevant key terms viz. Fear of COVID-19 among pregnant women in Pakistan: a cross-sectional study

Background: The emergence of COVID-19 and its pandemic nature has exacerbated fears worldwide. Pregnant women are considered a vulnerable group during the COVID-19 pandemic because the physiological changes make them more susceptible to infections. Pregnant women are found expressing much of the fear related to their course of pregnancy, the in-utero transmission of the disease, and questions related to infection control in healthcare settings. Hence, the purpose of this paper was to explore the fears faced by pregnant women related to COVID.Methods: It was a cross-sectional survey among 201 pregnant women attending antenatal clinics of Aga Khan University Hospital. The survey tool contains demographic variables and a 7-item scale of “Fear in COVID” which is pre tested in the Iranian population. The survey form was made on google drive and sent to pregnant females on WhatsApp.Results: 201 pregnant women mostly belonging to middle and low socioeconomic class were enrolled. The majority (80%) of women were less than 30 years of age. Only 26 (12.9%) were primigravids, remaining were multigravidas of a different order of pregnancy. 60% of our study population showed high fear scores (27-35) from coronavirus whereas another 30% had moderate fear. No association of study variables was found with fear scores.Conclusions: We found a high level of fear of COVID-19 among the pregnant population with a higher level of anxiety and stress related symptoms. The amount of fear and stress is independent of the trimester or order of pregnancy.

The co-transfer of plasmid-borne colistin-resistant genes mcr-1 and mcr-3.5, the carbapenemase gene blaNDM-5 and the 16S methylase gene rmtB from Escherichia coli

We found an unusual Escherichia coli strain with resistance to colistin, carbapenem and amikacin from sewage. We therefore characterized the strain and determined the co-transfer of the resistance determinants. Whole genome sequencing was performed using both Illumina HiSeq X10 and MinION sequencers. Short and long reads were subjected to de novo hybrid assembly. Sequence type, antimicrobial resistance genes and plasmid replicons were identified from the genome sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of all IncHI2 plasmids carrying mcr-1 available in GenBank was performed based on core genes. Conjugation experiments were performed. mcr-3.5 was cloned into E. coli DH5α. The strain belonged to ST410, a type with a global distribution. Two colistin-resistant genes, mcr-1.1 and mcr-3.5, a carbapenemase gene blaNDM-5, and a 16S methylase gene rmtB were identified on different plasmids of IncHI2(ST3)/IncN, IncP, IncX3 and IncFII, respectively. All of the four plasmids were self-transmissible and mcr-1.1, mcr-3.5, blaNDM-5 and rmtB were transferred together. mcr-1-carrying IncHI2 plasmids belonged to several sequence types with ST3 and ST4 being predominant. MIC of colistin (4 μg/ml) for DH5α containing mcr-3.5 was identical to that containing the original mcr-3 variant. In conclusion, carbapenem resistance, colistin resistance and high-level aminoglycoside resistance can be transferred together even when their encoding genes are not located on the same plasmid. The co-transfer of multiple clinically-important antimicrobial resistance represents a particular challenge for clinical treatment and infection control in healthcare settings. Isolates with resistance to both carbapenem and colistin are not restricted to a given sequence type but rather are diverse in clonal background, which warrants further surveillance. The amino acid substitutions of MCR-3.5 have not altered its activity against colistin.

Spatial overlap links seemingly unconnected genotype-matched TB cases in rural Uganda.

IntroductionIncomplete understanding of TB transmission dynamics in high HIV prevalence settings remains an obstacle for prevention. Understanding where transmission occurs could provide a platform for case finding and interrupting transmission.MethodsFrom 2012–2015, we sought to recruit all adults starting TB treatment in a Ugandan community. Participants underwent household (HH) contact investigation, and provided names of social contacts, sites of work, healthcare and socializing, and two sputum samples. Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture-positive specimens underwent 24-loci MIRU-VNTR and spoligotyping. We sought to identify epidemiologic links between genotype-matched cases by analyzing social networks and mapping locations where cases reported spending ≥12 hours over the one-month pre-treatment. Sites of spatial overlap (≤100m) between genotype-matched cases were considered potential transmission sites. We analyzed social networks stratified by genotype clustering status, with cases linked by shared locations, and compared network density by location type between clustered vs. non-clustered cases.ResultsOf 173 adults with TB, 131 (76%) were enrolled, 108 provided sputum, and 84/131 (78%) were MTB culture-positive: 52% (66/131) tested HIV-positive. Of 118 adult HH contacts, 105 (89%) were screened and 3 (2.5%) diagnosed with active TB. Overall, 33 TB cases (39%) belonged to 15 distinct MTB genotype-matched clusters. Within each cluster, no cases shared a HH or reported shared non-HH contacts. In 6/15 (40%) clusters, potential epidemiologic links were identified by spatial overlap at specific locations: 5/6 involved health care settings. Genotype-clustered TB social networks had significantly greater network density based on shared clinics (p<0.001) and decreased density based on shared marketplaces (p<0.001), compared to non-clustered networks.ConclusionsIn this molecular epidemiologic study, links between MTB genotype-matched cases were only identifiable via shared locations, healthcare locations in particular, rather than named contacts. This suggests most transmission is occurring between casual contacts, and emphasizes the need for improved infection control in healthcare settings in rural Africa.

Infection control in healthcare settings: perspectives for mfDNA analysis in monitoring sanitation procedures.

BackgroundAppropriate sanitation procedures and monitoring of their actual efficacy represent critical points for improving hygiene and reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Presently, surveillance is based on traditional protocols and classical microbiology. Innovation in monitoring is required not only to enhance safety or speed up controls but also to prevent cross infections due to novel or uncultivable pathogens. In order to improve surveillance monitoring, we propose that biological fluid microflora (mf) on reprocessed devices is a potential indicator of sanitation failure, when tested by an mfDNA-based approach. The survey focused on oral microflora traces in dental care settings.MethodsExperimental tests (n = 48) and an “in field” trial (n = 83) were performed on dental instruments. Conventional microbiology and amplification of bacterial genes by multiple real-time PCR were applied to detect traces of salivary microflora. Six different sanitation protocols were considered. A monitoring protocol was developed and performance of the mfDNA assay was evaluated by sensitivity and specificity.ResultsContaminated samples resulted positive for saliva traces by the proposed approach (CT < 35). In accordance with guidelines, only fully sanitized samples were considered negative (100 %). Culture-based tests confirmed disinfectant efficacy, but failed in detecting incomplete sanitation. The method provided sensitivity and specificity over 95 %.ConclusionsThe principle of detecting biological fluids by mfDNA analysis seems promising for monitoring the effectiveness of instrument reprocessing. The molecular approach is simple, fast and can provide a valid support for surveillance in dental care or other hospital settings.

Nosocomial infection control in healthcare settings: Protection against emerging infectious diseases

The Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea in 2015 may be attributable to poor nosocomial infection control procedures implemented. Strict infection control measures were taken in the hospital where an imported case with MERS was treated in southern China and 53 health care workers were confirmed to be MERS-CoV negative. Infection control in healthcare settings, in which patients with emerging infectious diseases such as MERS, Ebola virus disease, and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are diagnosed and treated, are often imperfect. When it comes to emerging or unknown infectious diseases, before the imported case was finally identified or community transmission was reported, cases have often occurred in clusters in healthcare settings. Ebola and Its Control in Liberia, 2014-2015.

The severe epidemic of Ebola virus disease in Liberia started in March 2014. On May 9, 2015, the World Health Organization declared Liberia free of Ebola, 42 days after safe burial of the last known case-patient. However, another 6 cases occurred during June-July; on September 3, 2015, the country was again declared free of Ebola. Liberia had by then reported 10,672 cases of Ebola and 4,808 deaths, 37.0% and 42.6%, respectively, of the 28,103 cases and 11,290 deaths reported from the 3 countries that were heavily affected at that time. Essential components of the response included government leadership and sense of urgency, coordinated international assistance, sound technical work, flexibility guided by epidemiologic data, transparency and effective communication, and efforts by communities themselves. Priorities after the epidemic include surveillance in case of resurgence, restoration of health services, infection control in healthcare settings, and strengthening of basic public health systems.

A time-based analysis of the personalized exhaust system for airborne infection control in healthcare settings

In healthcare centers, healthcare workers would not know if patients are infected or not until the infected person is diagnosed and moved to an isolation room; therefore, the effectiveness of ventilation systems in removing the exhaled infectious air in the consultation room becomes important. To prevent the transmission of exhaled air, two types of personalized exhaust devices were explored: top-personalized exhaust and shoulder-personalized exhaust. Three different arrangements with 30 cases between 2 manikins were studied experimentally using tracer gas. The intake fraction was compared with and without the personalized exhaust at the end of three different exposure durations: 10, 20, and 30 min. The results show that after applying either top-personalized exhaust or shoulder-personalized exhaust, the intake fraction is significantly decreased. With the higher flow rate of 20 L/s of personalized exhaust, the intake fractions at 30 min are found to be even lower than the intake fractions at 10 min without personalized exhaust. This implies that despite a longer exposure time, if the exposure amount is reduced, the infection risk is observed to be lower.

Determinants of influenza vaccination uptake among Italian healthcare workers

We analyzed seasonal influenza vaccination coverage among the Italian healthcare workers (HCW) in order to identify socio-demographic and clinical determinants of vaccination. We used data from the survey “Health and health care use in Italy,” which comprised interviews of 5,336 HCWs For each respondent, information on socioeconomic, health conditions, self-perceived health and smoking status were obtained. After bivariate analysis, we used multilevel regression models to assess determinants of immunization. Overall 20.8% of HCWs (95%CI 19.7–21.9) reported being vaccinated against seasonal influenza. After controlling for potential confounders, multilevel regression revealed that older workers have a higher likelihood of vaccine uptake (OR = 6.07; 95% CI 4.72–7.79). Conversely, higher education was associated with lower vaccine uptake (OR = 0.65; 95% IC 0.50–0.83). Those suffering from diabetes (OR = 2.07; 95% CI 1.19–1.69), COPD (OR = 1.95; 95% CI 1.31–2.89) and cardiovascular diseases (OR = 1.48 95% CI 1.11–1.96) were more likely to be vaccinated. Likewise, smokers, or former smokers receive more frequently the vaccination (OR = 1.40; 95% CI 1.15–1.70; OR = 1.54; 95% CI 1.24–1.91, respectively) compared with never-smokers as well as those HCWs reporting fair or poor perceived health status (ORs of 1.68, 95% CI 1.30–2.18). Vaccine coverage among HCWs in Italy remains low, especially among those with no comorbidities and being younger than 44 y old. This behavior not only raises questions regarding healthcare organization, infection control in healthcare settings and clinical costs, but also brings up ethical issues concerning physicians who seem not to be very concerned about the impact of the flu on themselves, as well as on their patients. Influenza vaccination campaigns will only be effective if HCWs understand their role in influenza transmission and prevention, and realize the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure

Post-discharge mortality in patients hospitalized with MRSA infection and/or colonization

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is known to increase in-hospital mortality, but little is known about its association with long-term health. Two hundred and thirty-seven deaths occurred among 707 patients with MRSA infection at the time of hospitalization and/or nasal colonization followed for almost 4 years after discharge from the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, USA. The crude mortality rate in patients with an infection and colonization (23·57/100 person-years) was significantly higher than the rate in patients with only colonization (15·67/100 person-years, P = 0·037). MRSA infection, hospitalization within past 6 months, and histories of cancer or haemodialysis were independent risk factors. Adjusted mortality rates in patients with infection were almost twice as high compared to patients who were only colonized: patients infected and colonized [hazard ratio (HR) 1·93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·31-2·84]; patients infected but not colonized (HR 1·96, 95% CI 1·22-3·17). Surviving MRSA infection adversely affects long-term mortality, underscoring the importance of infection control in healthcare settings.
