Industry 4.0: skills for the future and learning development

The world and the workforce are changing with the rise of Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with a shift towards automation and digital technology, and this is coupled with other global shifts such as the climate crisis. Organisations such as the World Economic Forum, the International Labour Organisation, and Skills Development Scotland believe Industry 4.0 will change the way we work and live, with implications for everyone. These organisations argue that we need to become lifelong learners and develop future-ready skills, most notably adaptability, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. But what does this mean for Learning Developers? Firstly, we need to consider how and if our own roles will change, and secondly the impact this will have on our learners and what (if any) changes we should make to support them. I used the following prompt questions to start the discussions: Should Learning Developers be concerned about Industry 4.0? What are future-ready skills and are these already embedded in higher education? Should Industry 4.0 impact the way Learning Developers think about lifelong learning?

Validity of Problem Based Learning Oriented E-LAPD for Practicing Creative Thinking Skills Reaction Rate Material

The era of education that occurs in the 21st century places demands on students to ensure the ability to think creatively to solve various problems. Apart from that, the development of the industrial revolution 4.0 plays a role in the current generation in terms of technology and the internet. The aim of this research is to determine the validity of E-LAPD oriented Problem Based Learning (PBL) to train creative thinking skills on reaction rate material. This research uses an R&D model, one of which is ADDIE. The ADDIE development research model consists of 5 stages, namely Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate, but without carrying out the Implementation stage. This validation was carried out by 3 validators, namely 2 chemistry lecturers and 1 chemistry teacher at SMA Labschool Unesa 1 Surabaya. The results of the analysis of aspect of content validity get a mode value of 4 with a valid category, while for aspect construct validity it gets a mode value of 5 with a very valid category, the results of the content and construct validity values get a mode score of ≥ 3, so E- LPAD can be declared valid. So that E-LAPD media can be used in learning.

The Development of SETS-Based E-Modules for Industrial Chemistry According to IMO Model Course 7.04

The era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 encourages universities to utilize information technology. Learning industrial chemistry courses in maritime education is still conventional, with little time allocation. Apart from that, no digital-based learning resources comply with the IMO 7.04 standard. This research aims to develop a SETS (Science, Environment, Technology, and Society) based e-module Website for the Industrial Chemistry course according to IMO 7.04 standards, as well as analyze the feasibility of the product. This research method is R&D (Research & Development) using the ADDIE model but is limited to the development stage. Quantitative data is processed into interval data using a Likert scale. The research results show that the validation of material experts is 87.89% in the very valid category, and media experts are 91.67% in the very valid category. Limited trials on students showed a positive response 90.13% in the very good category. It is hoped that the development of this e-module can improve the quality of learning in maritime education.

The Influence and Strategies of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Academia, Ethics and Society

In the context of the emerging digital environment, generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is quickly becoming implemented in different spheres of life and even begins to replace people in some professions. This means that GAI is leading a new round of technological and industrial revolution. The application and growth of artificial intelligence has improved the society as well as the economy and but has issued many ethical and social problems thus making ethical governance of artificial intelligence more relevant. To contribute to the further development of the concept GAI under the conditions of sustainable development of human society and science, industries and scholars around the world have started researches on this technology. However, as GAI is still an embryonic field, more research efforts must be directed toward this field in the future. Researched articles that compare the use of GAI to the effects on ethical and societal concerns will form the basis of this paper and the resulting discussion of the pros and cons of this technology, this paper considers and demonstrates the difficulties of students, educators, and academics facing the consequences of GAI development. Finally, it has suggestion for the governance of GAI’s next phase of growth.

Economic Development in the Context of Technology, Capital, Man and Society Interconnection

The search for sources and problems of economic development is an important area of macroeconomic theory, within which identifying the specifics of current and future development is a pressing theoretical issue. Studying the features of development in the context of the relationship between technology, capital, man and society helps to improve the understanding and management of the cause-and-effect chain of sequences of technological, economic and social changes in society. The main stages of development of the world economy since the first industrial revolution are studied, the mechanism of economic development as a set of cyclical fluctuations and non-cyclical influences is examined, the characteristics and specifics of the current stage of development of the world economy are analyzed and views on its future trajectory are systemized.

Climate Change Implications on Middle Eastern Geography and Stability – A Case Studies of GCC- with a Focus on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The environment constitutes the natural setting where humans reside, secure food sources, and utilize natural resources to fulfill their material and life necessities. Unlike other creatures, humans have not adapted to nature and the surrounding environment; instead, they have manipulated it to their advantage, disrupting the ecological balance. The primary catalyst for this disruption was the Industrial Revolution, which significantly increased pollution rates, harmful emissions, and the extraction of raw materials, thereby intensifying the exploitation of natural resources. The gravest concern is that the damage inflicted upon nature may reach a point of no return, with catastrophic and enduring consequences, such as global warming, ice melting, rising sea levels, and escalation in greenhouse gases, along with severe repercussions of these events, including an increase in mortality rates due to natural disasters. Effective responses necessitate actions at various levels, including cultural and educational initiatives and international measures, particularly in legislation. Such laws must enforce stringent controls on emissions from industrial and automotive sources. Individuals are called upon to conserve electricity and water, and adopting renewable energy sources, such as solar, hydro, wind, and tidal energy, that do not rely on fuel combustion is encouraged. Planting trees, which absorb carbon dioxide as a primary contributor to global warming, is among the most critical measures we can undertake. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is essential in combating climate change in this arena, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is leading in this. This paper elaborates on the impact of climate change in Middle Eastern countries using a brief case study of the Saudi Green Initiatives. The paper also presents the policy recommendations to the concerned stakeholders of the GCC and the government of Saidi Arabia.

Effective Machine Learning Solution for State Classification and Productivity Identification: Case of Pneumatic Pressing Machine

The fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) brought significant changes in manufacturing, driven by technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, robotics, and big data analytics. For industries to remain competitive, the primary goals must be the improvement of the efficiency and safety of machinery, the reduction of production costs, and the enhancement of product quality. Predictive maintenance (PdM) utilizes historical data and AI models to diagnose equipment’s health and predict the remaining useful life (RUL), providing critical insights for machinery effectiveness and product manufacturing. This prediction is a critical strategy to maximize the useful life of equipment, especially in large-scale and important infostructures. This study focuses on developing an unsupervised machine state-classification solution utilizing real-world industrial measurements collected from a pneumatic pressing machine. Unsupervised machine learning (ML) models were tested to diagnose and output the working state of the pressing machine at each given point (offline, idle, pressing, defective). Our research contributes to extracting valuable insights regarding real-world industrial settings for PdM and production efficiency using unsupervised ML, promoting operation safety, cost reduction, and productivity enhancement in modern industries.

The Fifth Industrial Revolution and the Gig Economy: Assessing Technological Advancements Gaps, Regulatory Gaps and Skills Development Needs in Delhi NCR, India

The gig economy in India has grown significantly over the past decade, with millions of workers engaging in platform-based employment. Simultaneously, the world is transitioning to the Fifth Industrial Revolution, characterized by the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation with human-centered values. This study explores the impact of the Fifth Industrial Revolution on gig workers, focusing on working conditions, job security, access to skills development, and the adequacy of current regulatory frameworks with special reference to Delhi &NCR region. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from surveys of gig workers and qualitative insights from in-depth interviews with platform executives and policymakers. The study found that while technological advancements have improved working conditions in some areas, job security remains a significant concern for gig workers. Additionally, access to skills development is strongly correlated with workers' ability to adapt to new technologies, but many face barriers to acquiring necessary training. The study also reveals a widespread perception that current regulations, including the Social Security Code, 2020, are inadequate in addressing gig workers' needs. These findings highlight the urgent need for comprehensive regulatory reforms and greater investment in skills development to ensure that gig workers can fully benefit from the opportunities of the Fifth Industrial Revolution while being protected from its risks.

Analysis of the causes of sustained economic growth in and after the late 18th century

Before the late 18th century, sustained economic growth was largely absent, but after that, the situation changed. The rarity of sustained economic growth before the late 18th century can attributed to institutional constraints on technological development and economic trade and a low-productivity equilibrium characterized by limited technological innovation and demographic pressures. After the late 18th century, the Industrial Revolution, institutional changes such as capitalism and colonialism, and demographic transitions all emerged. How these factors enabled sustained economic growth is analyzed in the essay.

Nexus between intellectual capital and innovation performance: the mediating role of firm’s attractiveness and knowledge sharing

Purpose Intellectual capital has recently gained significant attention for achieving a competitive advantage for firms. Accordingly, this study aims to examines the impact of intellectual capital on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) innovation performance. Additionally, it also examines the mediating role of firm’s attractiveness (FATR) and knowledge sharing (KS) in small enterprises of India’s National Capital Region (NCR). Design/methodology/approach Data was gathered from 395 owners and managers of the NCR region through a self-administered survey questionnaire. The author applied a “variance-based structural equation modeling” to examine the outcomes. Findings The outcomes exhibited that relational capital (RC) significantly influences the FATR, while human capital (HC) and structural capital (SC) insignificantly influences the FATR. Furthermore, HC, RC and SC substantially influence KS. Interestingly, the outcomes also reveal that a FATR and KS substantially influence innovation performance. Research limitations/implications This research provides valuable opportunities to expand the study of intellectual capital and innovation performance in SMEs across different countries, paving the way for future comparative analyses in diverse international contexts. Practical implications The results assist policymakers and practitioners in assessing an organization’s ability to transform data into intellectual capital within the context of “Industrial Revolution 4.0” to strengthen its sustainability and innovation performance. Originality/value The current paper delivers a more affluent and novel understanding of Indian SMEs by examining the interplay between intellectual capital and innovation performance mediating by a FATR and KS behavior. Furthermore, the proposed model has not been previously addressed in the academic literature, which signifies advancement in scientific knowledge.

Diachronic Height Changes in Europe From the Mesolithic to the Present: Exploring Possible Causes and Regional Specificities.

A meta-analysis of diachronic changes in average height across Europe from the Mesolithic to the present, based on a broad range of literature sources. The analysis of chronological height variability was based on skeletal remains (from the Mesolithic to the 19th century), from which height was reconstructed, and on data from living individuals measured from the late 19th to the early 21st century. In total, data from 73 skeletal series and 342 groups of modern populations, primarily from Eastern Europe, were analyzed. A regression analysis was performed using R to describe the patterns of variability. The findings indicate that height decreases during the Neolithic and remains relatively stable until the Medieval period. A decline in average height is observed during the High Medieval period. The Early Modern period marks a transition to the 20th century, during which there is a consistent increase in average height, most pronounced until the 1980s, after which the rate of increase slows slightly into the early 21st century. Temporal height variability in the European part of Russia shows regional differences. The results suggest a wave-like pattern of trans-epochal changes in the somatic status of populations over an extended period, likely driven by various socioeconomic factors that dominated in different historical periods: the transition to agriculture, urbanization, political systems, industrial revolutions, and significant improvements in quality of life. Diachronic changes in height exhibit regional specificities, reflected in the variability of rates and magnitudes of secular gains across different regions and time periods.

This study aims to describe the changes that occurred in PT Pos Indonesia in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. Along with the development of the era in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, an era where technology takes on the role of almost all activities of human life. This study used descriptive qualitative method. For this reason, PT Pos Indonesia launched a new service to consumers, namely the Pospay service. The data collection technique is through literature study. The results of the research are the strategies/efforts used to face obstacles as well as rejection and follow the developments of the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 by innovating digital transformation which with one application can be used for convenience in various activities. Future of knowledge management in investment banking: Role of personal intelligent assistants

Purpose: The study’s objective focuses on investigating the involvement of Personal Intelligent Assistants (PIAs) in the Knowledge Management Process (KMP) in Investment Banking Companies leading to Industrial Revolution 5.0 leading to effective Organizational Knowledge Management. Design/Methodology: A Self-administered Survey Questionnaire was circulated to 695 employees of Investment Banking Companies operating in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune using the Cluster Sampling method. The Covariance-based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) and Gradient Boosting Regression technique of Machine Learning were used to validate the hypothesis through JASP V.18 Software. Knowledge Creation, Knowledge Sharing, Knowledge Retrieval, Knowledge Application, and Organizational Knowledge Management are the crucial constructs considered in the study. Findings: The results revealed that Knowledge Application is the most influencing factor in effective organizational Knowledge management among the Investment Banks followed by Knowledge Sharing. It also emphasizes that they have a weak Knowledge retrieval process and minimal efforts taken to create knowledge within these banks. Implications: The PIAs can facilitate effective Data Analysis and research in managing vast data eliminating the repeated tasks in portfolio reconciliation and offering personalized recommendations to manage portfolios. It enables in compliance, risk management, client relationship management, real-time monitoring and leveraged decision-making through predictive analysis.

The Impacts of Cyberattack on SMEs in the USA and Way to Accelerate Cybersecurity

We are at the 4th industrial revolution called industry 4.0. The world is turning from digitalization to automation. Technological advancement and adoption and utilization of changing pattern of technology is gaining the gear at all social, political, diplomatic, economic and commercial spheres including SMEs. Technological advancement is bringing speed, innovation and sophistication of products and services in SMEs in one hand and on the other hand, cyber hacking and various and changing pattern of cybercrimes are hampering the growth and development. The aim of the study is to analysis the impacts of cyberattacks on SME’s productivity, growth and development in USA and potential way to accelerate the cyber security in the area. The study is mainly based on secondary sources of data including journals, research publications, scholarly articles, thesis papers etc. The finding of the study revealed that Banking and finance, healthcare, small manufacturing firms, retailers and E-commerce, public transport and infrastructure with less than 500 employees are the most vulnerable sectors for the Cyber-attack in the USA. The most commonly practiced cyberattacks are Phishing attacks, Ransomware, Malware, DDoS attacks, MitM etc. The Study suggests a number of cyber security measures including employee awareness and training program, creation of security policy and practice, know how to distinguish between fake antivirus offer and real notification and protect OT-IT system to prevent the damage.

Trends of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use in Drug Targets, Discovery and Development: Current Status and Future Perspectives.

The applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmaceutical sectors have advanced drug discovery and development methods. AI has been applied in virtual drug design, molecule synthesis, advanced research, various screening methods, and decision-making processes. In the fourth industrial revolution, when medical discoveries are happening swiftly, AI technology is essential to reduce the costs, effort, and time in the pharmaceutical industry. Further, it will aid "genome-based medicine" and "drug discovery." AI may prepare proactive databases according to diseases, disorders, and appropriate usage of drugs which will facilitate the required data for the process of drug development. The application of AI has improved clinical trials on patient selection in a population, stratification, and sample assessment such as biomarkers, effectiveness measures, dosage selection, and trial length. Various studies suggest AI could be perform better compared to conventional techniques in drug discovery. Academic libraries readiness in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: a comparative study between Ghana and South Africa

PurposeThis study compares the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) preparedness of two advanced academic libraries each in Ghana and South Africa.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilized a conceptual framework that emanated from the Socio-Technical Theory (STT) and Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) models. Employing convergent parallel mixed methods, including questionnaires and interviews, 167 respondents, comprising librarians, IT staff and directors, shared insights on challenges faced by academic libraries in adapting to 4IR.FindingsFindings highlight a deficiency in Lib 4.0 skills crucial for survival in the 4IR, with South Africa showing better readiness. Both countries lack Lib 4.0 policies and face budget constraints, inadequate ICT infrastructure and limited support. The findings underscore the impact of relevant training on staff embracing Lib 4.0 technologies.Originality/valueThe study then proposes a comprehensive model, highlighting the significance of librarians adopting a growth mindset and priori V Btizing continuous learning, relearning, reskilling and upskilling to effectively navigate the complexities posed by the 4IR.

Rural Depopulation in the Context of 4.0 Technologies: Opportunities for Sustainability and Innovation Policies

This paper provides a systematic review of the scientific landscape of the interdisciplinary field of rural depopulation studies, considering the potential contribution of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies or Industry 4.0 to enhance our contemporary understanding and policy approach to facing the complex challenge of rural transitions. Two levels of intersec search are examined: (a) an aggregated conceptual level of rural population studies and (b) a more policy-based level. Blockchain, the Internet of Things, additive manufacturing, and other 4.0 technologies highlight a scientific panorama in which social and sustainable concerns are integrated with the disruptive potential of these technologies.

Fostering 4.0 Digital Literacy Skills Through Attributes of Openness: A Review

During the last decade, a growing interest in open educational resources (OER) has developed among educational researchers worldwide. This trend involves the examination of possible effects over diverse learning domains such as the development of literacy and digital skills in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. To address this matter, a systematic literature review was conducted using PRISMA processes on 62 research articles published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals indexed in two major academic databases (Scielo and Scopus). Data collected during this literature review showed certain conditions that must be met to ensure a successful learning setup when OER are involved. Moreover, qualitative analysis revealed that certain attributes of openness are often more influential than others in the development of adequate literacy skills for the artificial intelligence era; also, there is an overall positive perception, from students and teachers alike, about the introduction of the attributes of openness and open materials into learning practices.
