Building a Strong English Civil Engineering Vocabulary

Vocabulary acquisition means the process of learning and acquiring new words and their meanings. Building a strong vocabulary is essential for effective communication, reading comprehension, and overall language proficiency. Civil engineering involves designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and buildings. To be successful in this field, it is important to have a good understanding of technical terms and concepts in English, which is the universal language of communication. Building a robust civil engineering English vocabulary is crucial for effectively communicating with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders, as well as understanding complex engineering principles and procedures. One way to improve the civil engineering vocabulary is to familiarize with key technical terms and definitions. Another important aspect of building a strong civil engineering vocabulary is to study the different types of materials, tools, and techniques used in the industry. In addition to technical terminology and materials, it is also important to learn common abbreviations and acronyms, suffixes and prefixes used in civil engineering. Word formation is also a key aspect in enhancing civil engineering vocabulary. One effective way to expand the civil engineering vocabulary is to read industry publications, technical manuals, and research papers. Lastly, practice and repetition are key to building a strong civil engineering vocabulary. The present article deals with all these essential points in building a strong civil engineering English vocabulary.

Origins of High Air Sensitivity and Treatment Strategies in O3-Type NaMn1/3 Fe1/3Ni1/3O2.

Sodium-ion layered oxides are one of the most highly regarded sodium-ion cathode materials and are expected to be used in electric vehicles and large-scale grid-level energy storage systems. However, highly air-sensitive issues limit sodium-ion layered oxide cathode materials to maximize cost advantages. Industrial and scientific researchers have been developing cost-effective air sensitivity treatment strategies with little success because the impurity formation mechanism is still unclear. Using density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, this work shows that the poor air stability of O3-type NaMn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 (NMFNO) may be as follows: (1) low percentage of nonreactive (003) surface; (2) strong surface adsorption capacity and high surface reactivity; and (3) instability of the surface sodium ions. Our physical images point out that the high reactivity of the NMFNO surface originates from the increase in electron loss and unpaired electrons (magnetic moments) of the surface oxygen active site as well as the enhanced metal coactivation effect due to the large radius of the sodium ion. We also found that the hydrolysis reaction requires a higher reactivity of the surface oxygen active site, while the carbon hybridization mode transformation in carbonate formation depends mainly on metal activation and does not even require the involvement of surface oxygen active sites. Based on the calculation results and our proposed physical images, we discuss the feasibility of these treatment strategies (including surface morphology modulation, cation/anion substitution, and surface configuration design) for air-sensitive issues.

Reframing: a feminist reflection on Alan Fox

PurposeThis paper contributes to the broad aim of this special issue, reflecting on the relevance of the writing of Alan Fox to the contemporary industrial relations field. It offers an original reflection from a feminist perspective on Fox’s classic insights around frames of reference.Design/methodology/approachWe concentrate on Beyond Contract, Work, Power and Trust Relations (1974a) and Man Mismanagement (1974b, 1985) as the texts setting out Fox’s influential frames of reference theory, before moving on to subsequent literature in the field making use of Fox’s frames. In undertaking this review from a feminist perspective, we specifically look at the extent to which work considers standpoint, gender relations and political engagement. We draw further on wider feminist scholarship within industrial relations, critical race theory and intersectionality perspectives.FindingsDespite the concept of inequality forming the core of Fox’s analyses, there is a lack of attention to gender or to other diversity strands in his work and, notwithstanding the weight of feminist scholarship within the industrial relations field since, this neglect has been carried forward into subsequent use of Fox’s work. We argue there is space for the frames to be interpreted and used in ways that leave space for attention to feminist concerns and call on academics to approach their use of Fox from a more critically-informed perspective.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper’s argument has implications for the field of industrial relations in terms of conceptual understanding and methodological approaches. With space, it would have been useful to apply our revised understanding of Fox’s key concepts to empirical cases.Practical implicationsGreater clarity in what constitutes “unitary” and “pluralist” perspectives and categories will help employment relations actors.Originality/valueWe present a novel feminist re-framing of Fox’s work, providing new understandings of the strengths, weaknesses and applicability of the frames of reference within contemporary industrial relations research and practice. We advocate for methodological and scholarly approaches which advance theoretical and empirical justice in the field, moving beyond gender to draw on critical race theory and intersectionality frameworks.

Preparation of preservation paper containing essential oil microemulsion and its application in maintain the quality of post-harvest peaches

Post-harvest peaches are highly susceptible to fungal infections leading to spoilage. This study investigates the utilization of three edible plant essential oils (EOs) with antifungal properties for the preservation of peaches, along with an evaluation of their preservative efficacy. Initially, GC-MS was employed to identify the primary constituents of the EOs, revealing a predominance of phenols, alcohols, hydrocarbons and aldehydes. Principal component analysis was conducted to compare the chemical compositions of the EOs from the plants used in this study with those obtained from other regions. This analysis facilitates the quality assessment of the plant materials in the later stages of the research. In vitro antimicrobial assays indicated that the three EOs independently exhibited their respective antifungal activities against 7 fungi responsible for peach spoilage. The Response Surface Methodology was then applied to optimize the blend ratio of the composite EOs (CEOs) for maximum antifungal efficacy. Concurrently, this study validated the rationality of a second-order polynomial model that correlates the peach decay index with the concentration of the CEOs. To enhance the bioavailability of the CEOs, a pseudo-ternary phase diagram was employed to formulate the CEOs into a microemulsion. Based on the RSM optimization results for the CEOs, the optimal mass ratio of the components within the microemulsion was determined. Using this microemulsion as a base, preservative films were developed that demonstrated a significant preservation effect on peaches, highlighting the immense potential of this research in the food industry.

Advanced materials and deepwater asset life cycle management: A strategic approach for enhancing offshore oil and gas operations

Offshore oil and gas operations are inherently complex, requiring a strategic approach to asset life cycle management to ensure efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. This review explores the use of advanced materials in deepwater asset management, highlighting their role in enhancing operational performance and longevity. The review begins by discussing the challenges associated with deepwater operations, including harsh environmental conditions, high pressures, and corrosive fluids. These challenges necessitate the use of advanced materials that can withstand such conditions while maintaining structural integrity and operational efficiency. The review then outlines the strategic approach to asset life cycle management, emphasizing the importance of integrating advanced materials into design, construction, and maintenance processes. This approach includes the selection of materials based on their performance characteristics, compatibility with existing infrastructure, and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the review discusses the benefits of using advanced materials in deepwater asset management, including improved corrosion resistance, enhanced structural strength, and reduced maintenance requirements. These benefits translate into increased operational uptime, reduced downtime for repairs, and overall cost savings. Finally, the review concludes by highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry stakeholders, including operators, manufacturers, and research institutions, to drive innovation in advanced materials and deepwater asset management. By embracing a strategic approach and leveraging advanced materials, offshore oil and gas operations can achieve higher levels of efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Incidence of and risk factors for small vulnerable newborns in north India: a secondary analysis of a prospective pregnancy cohort

Globally, recent estimates have shown there have been 3·6 million stillbirths and neonatal deaths in 2022, with nearly 60% occurring in low-income and middle-income countries. The Small Vulnerable Newborn Consortium has proposed a framework combining preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation), small for gestational age (SGA) by INTERGROWTH-21st standard, and low birthweight (<2500 g) under the category small vulnerable newborns (SVN). Reliable data on SVN from sub-Saharan Africa, central Asia, and south Asia are sparse. We aimed to estimate the incidence of SVN and its types, and quantify risk factors, both overall and trimester-specific, from a pregnancy cohort in north India. In the GARBH-Ini (Interdisciplinary Group for Advanced Research on Birth Outcomes-DBT India Initiative) pregnancy cohort, 8000 participants were enrolled with less than 20 weeks' gestation between May 11, 2015, and Aug 8, 2020, at a secondary-care hospital in north India. The cohort was followed up across the antenatal period for a detailed study on preterm birth. We conducted a secondary analysis of cohort data for the outcome of SVN, classified into its types: preterm-SGA, preterm-nonSGA, and term-SGA. We estimated the relative risk and population attributable fraction of candidate risk factors for SVN (modified Poisson regression) and its types (multinomial regression). 7183 (89·9%) of 7990 participants completed the study. Among 6206 newborns included for analysis, the incidence of SVN was 48·4% (35·1% term-SGA newborns [n=2179], 9·7% preterm-nonSGA newborns [n=605], and 3·6% preterm-SGA newborns [n=222]). Compared with term-nonSGA newborns, proportions of stillbirths and neonatal deaths within 72 h of birth among SVN were three times and 2·5 times higher, respectively. Preterm-SGA newborns had the highest incidence of stillbirth (15 [6·8%] of 222) and neonatal deaths (six [4·2%] of 142). Low body-mass index (BMI <18·5 kg/m2) of participants at the start of pregnancy was associated with higher risk for preterm-SGA (adjusted relative risk [RR] 1·61 [95% CI 1·17-2·22]), preterm-nonSGA (1·35 [1·09-1·68]), and term-SGA (1·44 [1·27- 1·64]), with population attributable fraction ranging from 8·7% to 13·8%. Pre-eclampsia (adjusted RR 1·48 [95% CI 1·30-1·71]), short cervical length (1·15 [1·04-1·26]), and bacterial vaginosis (1·13 [0·88-1·45]) were other important antenatal risk factors. In a comprehensive analysis of SVN and its types from north India, we identified risk factors to guide prioritisation of interventions. Complemented with risk-stratification tools, this focused approach will enhance antenatal care, and accelerate achievement of Sustainable Development Goals-namely, to end preventable deaths of newborns and children younger than 5 years by 2030 (target 3·2). A chromosome-level genome assembly for the paramylon-producing microalga Euglena gracilis

Euglena gracilis (E. gracilis), pivotal in the study of photosynthesis, endosymbiosis, and chloroplast development, is also an industrial microalga for paramylon production. Despite its importance, E. gracilis genome exploration faces challenges due to its intricate nature. In this study, we achieved a chromosome-level de novo assembly (2.37 Gb) using Illumina, PacBio, Bionano, and Hi-C data. The assembly exhibited a contig N50 of 619 Kb and scaffold N50 of 1.12 Mb, indicating superior continuity. Approximately 99.83% of the genome was anchored to 46 chromosomes, revealing structural insights. Repetitive elements constituted 58.84% of the sequences. Functional annotations were assigned to 39,362 proteins, enhancing interpretative power. BUSCO analysis confirmed assembly completeness at 80.39%. This first high-quality E. gracilis genome offers insights for genetics and genomics studies, overcoming previous limitations. The impact extends to academic and industrial research, providing a foundational resource.

KWH Cost Analysis of Energy Storage Power Station Based on Changing Trend of Battery Cost

Energy storage plays a vital role in enhancing the resilience of the power grid. Utilizing typical capacity and power energy storage application scenarios, coupled with industry research data and technical analysis of energy storage, this study calculates the cost of energy storage per kilowatt-hour and the associated mileage cost. The findings indicate that the current cost per kilowatt-hour of electrochemical energy storage ranges from approximately 0.6 to 0.9 yuan/(kW⋅h), revealing a considerable gap between the target cost for widespread application and the range of 0.3 to 0.4 yuan/(kW⋅h). Therefore, the development of energy storage technologies (EST) should prioritize achieving “low cost, long life, high safety, and easy recycling,” taking into account a comprehensive assessment of system manufacturing, system lifespan, system safety, and recycling. This paper delves into the changing trend of battery costs and their impact on kilowatt-hours, presenting strategic suggestions to reduce the kilowatt-hour cost of ESP stations. The research underscores that a continuous reduction in battery costs will contribute to enhancing the economic benefits of ESP stations and provide robust support for the future development of the energy storage industry.

Transforming E-Commerce Logistics: Sustainable Practices through Autonomous Maritime and Last-Mile Transportation Solutions

The logistics landscape in e-commerce is undergoing a profound transformation toward sustainability and autonomy. This paper explores the implementation of autonomous maritime and last-mile transportation solutions to optimize the entire logistics chain from factory to customer. Building on the lessons learned from the maritime industry’s digital transformation, the study identifies key features and proposes a forward-looking autonomous maritime and last-mile transportation system. Emphasizing the role of geospatial technologies, the proposed system employs GIS-based electronic route optimization for efficient goods delivery, integrating onboard and ashore GIS-based sensors for enhanced location precision. A case study was built to analyze the implementation of autonomous means of transport along the route of a product from factory to customer. The integration of autonomous systems shows substantial improvements in logistics performance. Synchromodal logistics and smart steaming techniques can be utilized to optimize transportation routes, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and emissions. The findings reveal that autonomous maritime and last-mile transport systems can significantly enhance the efficiency, flexibility and sustainability of e-commerce logistics. The study emphasizes the need for advanced technological integration and provides a comprehensive framework for future research and practical applications in the logistics industry.

Life cycle assessment of aerogels: a critical review

Over the past decade, the increasing emphasis on sustainable material production has brought aerogel technology to the forefront of scientific and industrial research. Aerogels are known for their extraordinary properties, such as high porosity and low density, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications from thermal insulation in buildings to drug delivery systems. This review systematically investigates the sustainability of aerogel production by analyzing the environmental impacts identified in recent life cycle assessments (LCAs). It examines studies on aerogel production using different precursors, solvents, and energy-intensive production methods, especially drying techniques, providing a comprehensive analysis of the environmental footprints and highlighting several hotspots. The review particularly focuses on identifying the disparities in LCA methodologies and the results obtained, which are crucial for crafting a roadmap toward more sustainable aerogel production. The findings emphasize the need for standardized functional units and lifecycle phases that reflect the specific applications of aerogels, thus enabling more accurate comparisons and assessments. The review concludes with a discussion of the critical gaps in current LCA studies of aerogels. It also offers sustainability recommendations based on identified hotspots, advocating for improvements in aerogel production techniques that minimize environmental impacts, enhance material efficiency, and reduce waste. By addressing these gaps, this paper aims to foster a deeper understanding of aerogel sustainability and encourage the development of more environmentally friendly practices in aerogel production and application.Graphical

Sustaining successful organisational change through leadership competence within Bahrain oil and gas: the power of Sustainable Network Leadership approach

PurposeDespite some academic recognition that leadership is particularly significant in reshaping the oil and gas industry’s contributions to global economic development and the sustainability of global energy supplies at affordable prices (Sharma et al., 2022), the attendant problem of how the industry’s leadership contributes towards the preservation of global environment and the maintenance of ecosystems’ balance, among other sustainability challenges, remains an academic lag. This calls for the urgent need for oil and gas companies to practice effective sustainable leadership approach at multiple organisational levels to address global environmental, economic and social challenges.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts an interpretivist/constructivist philosophical stance, where findings have been extracted from in-depth thick descriptive qualitative research in Bahrain oil and gas industry. Companies operating within Bahrain oil and gas industry were identified as the unit of analysis. Empirical data are gathered through semi-structured interviews from senior management and analysed using thematic analysis. This paper is structured as follows: introduction, contextualisation of the UNSDGs in the oil and gas industry, literature on network leadership, research methods used to gather and analyse data from Bahrain oil and gas industry findings, contributions, limitations and trajectories for further studies.FindingsThe study’s participants argued that the emergence of transformational and Sustainable Network Leadership is essential to successfully and sustainably implementing the UN SDGs. In other words, the Sustainable Network Leadership is a contribution to the single, leadership competences approach of previous scholarship (Weber et al., 2022; Kumalo and Scheepers, 2021) partly because it evolves around the notion of positioning different network and change actors based on their capacity to lead, exchange their knowledge, effectively communicate the need to comply with SDGs and the skills to establish high density within a complex network of actors.Research limitations/implicationsThis study recognises its limitations in the sense that it is based on the single context of Bahrain oil and gas, and data were collected from senior management and executives only. Gathering data from a broader swathe of employees may have provided greater levels of leadership and organisational member nuances in both single and collective differences of leadership attributes.Practical implicationsTransformational and Sustainable Network Leadership provides a new construct in the perception (the “what”), instrumentalisation (the “how”) and theoretical re-conceptualisation of leadership within organisational change settings needing radical rethink for sustainable and successful change. The practical implications of transformational and Sustainable Network Leadership expose the way a variety of highly challenged organisational change contexts are interconnected to highlight not only their different sets of challenges but also their opportunities and the resolution mechanisms they present for organisational leaders and staff alike.Originality/valueThis paper identified the single, leadership competence approach as the dominant discourse in organisational change, leadership studies and presented an alternative collective set of leaders’ attributes. The less utilised network leadership concept was drawn upon to contribute network leadership attributes as a way of addressing the challenges faced by Bahraini oil and gas company leaders. Therefore, this study contributes to both network leadership, transformational leadership by expanding both domains to include organisational transformation and the leadership-of-risky change. This was done by identifying attributes and characteristics of Sustainable Network Leadership, then showing their significance as an approach to successfully and sustainably implementing the UNSDGs.

Comparative study for purity assessment of recombinant human growth hormone using mass balance approach and amino acid-based isotope dilution mass spectrometry

Growth hormone plays an unreplaceable role in regulating human growth and promoting protein synthesis, etc. For this reason, accurate quantification of its purity has become a focus of attention in the pharmaceutical industry and medical research. Herein, the purity assessment of human growth hormone (hGH) was established on the basis of mass balance approach and amino acid (AA)-based isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). In the first method, hGH purity was quantified by the determination of all the impurities in a hGH study material. In the second method, hGH purity was assessed by quantifying hydrolyzed AAs, e.g. leucine (Leu), phenylalanine (Phe), and proline (Pro). To accurately quantify these AAs, the corresponding isotope-labeled AAs were used as internal standards using high-performance liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The results of the two methods for determining the purity of hGH were consistent, with the mass balance method giving a result of (0.352 ± 0.010) g/g and IDMS a result of (0.363 ± 0.028) g/g. The work in this study could give a benefit for protein quantification and provides a reference for the development of hGH certified reference materials.

Investment efficiency, ESG performance and corporate performance: evidence from Chinese listed enterprises

Purpose This study aims to propose a moderated mediation model to investigate the moderating effects of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance on the relationship between inefficient investment and firm performance and the mediating effect of firms that participate in institutional research on the relationship between investment efficiency and performance. This study also analyses the heterogeneity of the corporate nature, intensity of industrial research and development (R&amp;D), industrial competition and regional marketization. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a panel data fixed-effects model to conduct a regression analysis of 1,918 Chinese listed firms from 2016 to 2020. A Fisher’s permutation test is used to examine the differences between state-owned and nonstate-owned firms. Findings Inefficient investment negatively impacts corporate performance and higher ESG performance exacerbates this effect by attracting more institutional research which reveals more problems. State-owned enterprises perform significantly better than nonstate-owned enterprises in terms of ESG transformation. Industrial R&amp;D intensity, competition and regional marketization also mitigate the negative effects of inefficient investment on corporate performance. Practical implications This study suggests that companies should consider inefficient investments that arise from agency issues in corporate ESG transformation. In addition, state-owned enterprises in ESG transformation should take the lead to achieve sustainable development more efficiently. China should balance regional marketization, encourage enterprises to increase R&amp;D intensity, reduce industry concentration, encourage healthy competition and prevent market monopolies. Originality/value This study combines the agency and stakeholder theories to reveal how inefficient investments that arise from agency issues inhibit value creation in ESG initiatives.

Promoting sustainability in the solar industry: bibliometric and systematic analysis of alternatives for the end-of-life of photovoltaic modules

This study conducted bibliometric and systematic analyses of the literature to map the application of life cycle assessment studies on photovoltaic panels, focusing on end-of-life alternatives. Seventy-six articles addressing management strategies, treatment, recycling, and utilization of the panels were examined. The results revealed a significant increase in the number of publications over time, particularly in high-impact journals. Sixteen end-of-life alternatives for the panels were identified, including recycling practices, material recovery, and landfills. All alternatives were analyzed regarding environmental, social, and economic impacts. Understanding the impacts of different end-of-life methods for solar panels is key in supporting government management and the implementation of effective policies and regulations. Additionally, it is necessary to consider the environmental and social effects, as well as ensure the protection of workers involved in related activities and prevent soil, water, and air contamination caused by different types of alternatives, such as dissolution and incineration. To enhance the recycling and recovery of elements from solar panels, scientific advancements and improvements in industrial infrastructure are necessary along with the implementation of a regional logistics approach that minimizes emissions resulting from transportation. The bibliometric analysis indicates that 65% of the studies were published within the last 3 years, and one quarter of the trending keywords of this period is “recycling”. This is particularly relevant to show a major area for research in the solar industry. By means of the systematic analysis, this study compiles and synthetizes the most recent and relevant alternatives for managing end-of-life photovoltaic panels. The comprehensive overview of the impacts associated with these alternatives contributes to the literature and practice of sustainability in the energy sector, providing support for informed decisions directed towards implementation.

Exploring Virtual Fashion Consumption through the Emotional Three-Level Theory: Reflections on Sustainable Consumer Behavior

The fast fashion industry has been widely criticized for its substantial consumption of resources and significant environmental pollution. In contrast, virtual fashion clothes are attracting attention from consumers and academics for their notable sustainability benefits and potential for fashion innovation. However, research on consumer acceptance of virtual clothes and the role of sustainability remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap by applying the Emotional Three-Level Theory to identify key virtual fashion attributes, including aesthetic, reality, personalization, presentation, sustainability, and inclusivity features, and evaluating their impact on acceptance using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A survey of 503 Generation Z consumers in China, analyzed through structural equation modeling, reveals that perceived enjoyment, usefulness, and ease of use significantly influence the intention to adopt virtual fashion clothes. Aesthetic and realistic features enhance enjoyment, while personalization and presentation improve usefulness and ease of use. Sustainability features positively impact all three factors, promoting consumer acceptance. These findings offer theoretical insights for virtual fashion research and practical guidance for the fashion industry to leverage virtual technologies for environmental sustainability. Notably, the study emphasizes the potential of virtual clothes in promoting sustainable development in the fashion industry.

Exploring the Benefits of Mass Timber Construction in the Workplace: A Novel Primer for Research

Mass timber construction has recently gained popularity due to its outstanding environmental benefits and building performance, which hold revolutionary potential for the construction industry. However, its impacts from the perspective of occupants have not been thoroughly explored. This study introduces an innovative empirical approach that explores the potential benefits of mass timber construction for individuals and organizations, with an emphasis on the workplace. We review the conceptual framework regarding how visual and physical exposure to timber construction materials and finishes have a positive effect on individuals and organizations at a broad level. We propose a more holistic mixed-method behavioral approach to studying occupant behavior and well-being by integrating self-reported questionnaires, objective biomarkers (heart rate variability and hair cortisol), and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) measures. Our study offers a novel research primer on the exploration of mass timber construction impacts and benefits for both office workers and construction workers. Participants from different office settings completed pre- and post-occupancy evaluation surveys to assess their experiences, including IEQ satisfaction, productivity, and health. Office workers were located in three different offices: a controlled laboratory environment, an open-plan office, and an open-plan space with a timber interior. The construction workers worked in a timber space for three months and then moved to work in a building with a concrete structure. The analysis included descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and linear regression to compare differences between office settings and assess the relationship between environmental variables and overall satisfaction in IEQ, comfort, productivity, and health. In office workers, in terms of building image, thermal comfort, and artificial lighting, the data analysis revealed significant differences in occupants’ satisfaction levels between office settings. However, the low number of participants affected the results, and some factors were not found significant in relation to the office setting. Among tradespeople, there was no relationship between the building environment and productivity, health, or comfort. However, the results of hair cortisol testing indicated that working in a timber space can decrease the level of cortisol (stress) and have an impact on the productivity of workers. Such occupant’s perspective research is pivotal to informing policy makers, developers, business owners, construction professionals, timber industry stakeholders, environmentalists, and researchers in their decision-making processes. Novel Circular RNA CircSLC2A13 Regulates Chicken Muscle Development by Sponging MiR-34a-3p.

The skeletal muscle is the major muscle tissue in animals, and its production is subject to a complex and strict regulation. The proliferation and differentiation of myoblasts are important factors determining chicken muscle development. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are endogenous RNAs that are widely present in various tissues of organisms. Recent studies have shown that circRNA plays key roles in the development of skeletal muscles. The solute carrier (SLC) family functions in the transport of metabolites such as amino acids, glucose, nucleotides, and essential nutrients and is widely involved in various basic physiological metabolic processes within the body. In this study, we have cloned a novel chicken circular RNA circSLC2A13 generated from the solute carrier family 2 member 13 gene (SLC2A13). Also, circSLC2A1 was confirmed by sequencing verification, RNase R treatment, and reverse transcription analysis. Currently, our results show that circSLC2A13 promoted the proliferation and differentiation of chicken myoblasts. The double luciferase reporter system revealed that circSLC2A13 regulated the proliferation and differentiation of myoblasts by competitive binding with miR-34a-3p. In addition, results indicated that circSLC2A13 acts as a miR-34a-3p sponge to relieve its inhibitory effect on the target SMAD3 gene. In summary, this study found that chicken circSLC2A13 can bind to miR-34a-3p and weaken its inhibitory effect on the SMAD family member 3 gene (SMAD3), thereby promoting the proliferation and differentiation of myoblasts. This study laid foundations for broiler industry and muscle development research.

Comparative life cycle assessment of sequential chemical and electrochemical processes for the treatment of industrial textile wastewater

AbstractFenton-based processes, chemical and electrochemical, have attracted the interest of industrial and academic researchers for wastewater treatment. However, the deficiency of rigorous comparison between different methods, including assessment of their impact on the environment, has hindered their large-scale application. This study reports for the first time on the sustainability of raw textile wastewater treatment through two sequential processes, Coagulation-Flocculation-Fenton-Neutralization (CF-F-N) and Coagulation-Flocculation-Electro-Fenton-Neutralization (CF-EF-N), based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The CF-F-N and CF-EF-N were optimized at laboratory scale and compared through LCA, using the IPCC-2013 and ReCiPe-2016 midpoint and endpoint methods. The highest CO2 emissions relied on the wastewater primary treatment by CF. This due to the high amount of hazardous sludge generated and the technology necessary for its disposal (i.e., 16.89 kg CO2-Eq/FU for underground deposit in security cells or 47.52 kg CO2-Eq/FU for incineration) as well as the consumption of reagents required for the treatment (alum, 7.72 kg CO2-Eq/FU; and slaked lime, 5.56 kg CO2-Eq/FU). Regarding the sequential processes, the EF-N presented lower carbon footprint (CFP) than the F-N (14.74 kg CO2-Eq/FU vs. 20.74 kg CO2-Eq/FU). Electricity (87.02% of the total CFP) and reagents (88.63% of the total CFP) denoted the main environmental hotspot during the EF-N and F-N, respectively. The EF-N, compared to the F-N, had an inferior incidence in 14 of the 18 impact categories analyzed using the ReCiPe-2016 method at the midpoint level. This is the result of low consumption of reagents and auxiliary chemicals. The electricity was also found as main environmental hotspot of the EF-N. The ReCiPe-2016 method at the endpoint level showed that the EF-N resulted in lower environmental load in all impact categories. The economic performance (11.91 USD/m3 for CF-EF-N vs. 13.66 USD/m3 for CF-F-N) and LCA demonstrated the competitiveness of the electrochemical sequential process compared to the chemical one. The CF-EF-N can be considered more environmentally sustainable technology.

CSR research in the hotel industry: how it relates to promoting the SDGs

PurposeResearch suggests the hotel industry has grown to integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs towards addressing issues relating to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Nevertheless, how the progression of research has influenced the field of CSR and the SDGs remains unexplored. This paper aims to address the knowledge gap.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a review of 230 papers from Scopus Indexed Journals – both mainstream and specialty. A content analysis was conducted to identify the major themes and the evolution of CSR research in the hotel industry.FindingsRecent CSR research has tended to shift towards issues such as CSR communication and reporting from its earlier focus on the perceptions and practices of CSR. The SDGs, in general, and environmental sustainability, in particular, remain on the periphery of hotel industry’s CSR initiatives. This raises concern about the ability of CSR programs to facilitate the SDGs by 2030. This study highlights that both stakeholders (e.g. consumers, employees) and business forces (e.g. financial bottom line) can shape the hotel industry’s CSR strategies in contributing to the SDGs and greater sustainability.Originality/valueThe research advances the CSR and sustainability literature by undertaking a comprehensive review of business research on CSR in the hotel industry focusing on the SDGs, and advancing and facilitating discussion on existing knowledge in this field and how the field can be further developed.

Mapping the intellectual structure and evolution of information technology and auditing: a bibliometric review

The study presents a thorough bibliometric analysis of articles on information technology (IT) and auditing in the Web of Science Core Collection from 1978 to 2022. The study involves examining 2,991 articles out of a total of 7,738. It uses a two-step method that includes descriptive performance measures and co-word analysis. The descriptive metrics reveal publishing patterns, productive nations and authors, their impact on specific areas and journals, citation counts by country, and highly cited publications. Co-occurrence analysis maps connections between concepts, uncovering the intricate interplay within the field. The results show six main trends: more and more technology is being used in internal auditing; more people need to know about information security; the need for transparency in the digital age; how technology is making ethical auditing easier; progress in cloud-based auditing with blockchain; and the rise of post-COVID IT continuous auditing standards. These trends highlight the necessity for auditors to navigate evolving technological landscapes while prioritizing ethical considerations, data security, and privacy. Furthermore, the study identifies key authors, publications, and influential nations in this domain, offering valuable insights for industry stakeholders and fostering potential avenues for collaborative research. This study’s novelty lies in its systematic analysis of IT and auditing literature, illuminating significant trends and providing actionable insights for both industry leaders and researchers seeking to contribute to this evolving field.
