3D Industrial Single-Source/Single-Detector Gamma CT Design and Development

A 3D industrial CT system was designed on the base of single-source – single-detector. The CT system hardware consists of 3 motors, a data acquisition system, a computer unit, a gamma source and a radiation detector. In this patent, phantom has 3dimensional rotation capability using motors in the direction (R,,Z). R & Z motors were shifted with 0.01° step and the motor had 360° rotation potential with 0.04° step and more. The acquired 2D & 3D images showed high resolutions.

Industrial radiography and tomography based on scanning linear scintillator array

We have developed an industrial CT and digital radiography (CT/DR) system for NDT at the USC (Spain). A 510 mm long detector array of 640 detection elements with submillimetrical spacing (0.8 mm), together with a 50 kV mini-focus tube have been integrated in a three-axis positioning system of flexible configuration. Accurate characterisation of geometrical parameters and system commissioning has been performed. System calibration algorithm has been implemented to correct for channel response variations. Other artefact sources, like beam hardening and scatter radiation, have been experimentally optimised. System capability to perform CT and DR scans has been demonstrated and example images are shown. Submilimetric resolution is achieved (up to 0.5 mm), as well as imaging of objects with high-density gradients.

Experiment and simulation study on construction of a three-dimensional network model

The construction of a network model is one of the key techniques in organic combination of microscopic flow experiment and simulation. The construction method of a three-dimensional network model is presented on the basis of CT scanning images in this paper. A series of CT slice images describing microscopic pore structure and fluid distribution of actual rock is obtained with the help of the industrial microfocus CT system. Based on the extraction of pore space skeleton, pore and throat information, the corresponding network model is established, and the conversion from three-dimensional CT image information to pore-throat size distribution and topological information is also achieved. The feature of this method lies in the fact that complicated pore space of rock may be characterized by pores and throats with a simple shape while keeping the geometry and flow characteristics. It is indicated that the calculated results of porosity, permeability, relative permeability curve and microscopic remaining oil distribution match very well the experimental results of water flooding and polymer flooding. This network model may fairly well characterize the rock microscopic pore-throat size and topological characteristics.

Behaviour of reconstructed attenuation values with X-ray tube voltage in an experimental third-generation industrial CT system using Xscan linear detector array

The present paper discusses the adaptation of a digital radiographic scintillator-based linear detector array (LDA) in a third-generation continuous-rotate X-ray industrial tomographic imaging system. The LDA has been used in a collinear configuration. Behaviour of the reconstructed parameter, i.e., approximate linear absorption coefficient at the ‘effective energy’ with varying anode voltage of the constant potential X-ray tube is studied. Experiments have been carried out with a solid cylindrical Perspex block (50 mm dia.) in 50–150 kV tube voltage range. The experimentally reconstructed attenuation values were used to predict the effective energy of the X-ray beam. The present study also includes a discussion on the statistical behaviour of the reconstructed linear attenuation values.

A dual-mode industrial CT

A dual-mode industrial CT system was designed and constructed, such that the lower and upper levels correspond to γ-ray and X-ray CT scanners respectively. The γ-ray scanner makes use of a monoenergetic 137Cs radioactive source and a BGO scintillator detector array employed spectroscopically. The X-ray scanner makes use of a 160 kV cp X-ray machine and CdWO 4 scintillators operating in a current mode. The spatial resolution of the γ-ray scanner is 0.6 lp/mm, and that for the X-ray scanner is 0.7 lp/mm. The contrast resolution is 0.5% for a volume of 1 cm 3 for both scanners. The utility of the system was examined on objects from the aircraft and chemical industry.
