Intra-System Shift Found in Borobudur Temple Tourism Brochure: A Translation Study

In translation, Intra-system shift is a translation process where a formally corresponding term in the source language (SL) loses its correspondence in the target language (TL). This study aims to analyze the intra-system shift from Indonesian as a source language into English as a target language of translation used in Borobudur Temple tourism brochure. It used a descriptive-qualitative method, which displayed the data with words in descriptive form. The data were taken from Borobudur Temple tourism brochure Indonesian-English translation. The data is then collected by using observation, documentation and note-taking methods. The data was analyzed by doing data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result shows that intra-system shift is indeed found in the Candi Borobudur Indonesian-English translation. From the five marks in intra-system shift , three marks were found in the brochure.

The Difficulties in Indonesian-English Translation on the Sixth Semester of the English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah Kotabumi University: A Case Study

Translation is a skill in the process of replacing a message or written statement from one language with a message and statement of the same in another language, where the message and statement conveyed from the source language must be the same as the target language. In fact there are several aspects of difficulties that make students’ difficulties in translation. Those aspects are lexical, grammatical, and stylistic difficulties. The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the difficulties in translating Indonesian-English on the sixth semester students of English education study program of Muhammadiyah Kotabumi University, and (2) to find out the difficulties dominate in translating Indonesian-English on the sixth semester students of English education study program of Muhammadiyah Kotabumi University. The method will be used is qualitative case study method. The researchers will use sampling techniques to get the information and data which is needed by the researchers. Purposive sampling is a sampling technique with certain considerations. In this case the researchers take 6 students who got low score of translating Indonesian-English as subject of the research. The research data is obtained from documents which this case are the results of students’ Indonesian-English translation. The researchers will use the data analysis model of Miles and Huberman. Activities in this data analysis will use data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification. From the data analysis shows that

Lexical and grammatical errors analysis on Indonesian-English translation of EFL students in Indonesia

This current study aimed to find out lexical and grammatical errors in Indonesian to English translation texts made by Indonesian EFL learners in a private senior high school in Lampung. A qualitative case study design was adopted in this research. Documentation and literature review were used as the research instruments. To obtain the data, the researchers used 15 simple sentences and a short text in Indonesian. A total of 25 students participated as the sample in this research. The results suggested that there was a total of 402 errors made by the students and the students made more grammatical errors than lexical errors. Regardless of the discrepancy of students’ CEFR level, the most frequent errors found in students’ translation were omissions (24.13%), confusion of sense relations (18.16%), misformations (11.44%), and distortions (9.95%). After identifying the errors, the researcher also attempted to describe the possible sources of errors to fill the gap in previous studies. Based on the analysis, the possible factors influencing the errors were transfer of phonological system, transfer of lexico-semantic errors, transfer of morphological elements, transfer of grammatical elements, transfer of stylistic and cultural elements in interlingual errors and communication strategy-based errors and learning strategy-based errors in intralingual errors.

STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS PRACTICE-ORIENTED TRANSLATION IN TEACHING TRANSLATION

Teaching translation with practice-oriented is not only focusing on practicing translation the text but also learning how the theory works in translation process. This research aimed to investigate students’ translation and attitude to practice-oriented translation in teaching translation. The samples were the students of English Department of Universitas Pamulang who took Indonesian-English Translation subject. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative research where the data were taken from students’ translation assignment and questionnaire. The translation assignments were analyzed based on bilingual competence; textual competence (cohesive and rhetorical structure). The data from the questionnaire were analyzed based on two indicators; lecturer’s approach and classroom activity. The findings were 1) the first half semester the translations were mostly word-to-word translation that the result was not equivalent enough to the source text, but then at the second half semester the students observed the rhetorical structure and the message of the source text that made their translation equivalent to the source text, 2) students’ attitude toward the practice-oriented translation is positive and, 3) the students translation was considered improve judging from the score that they gained from the first the method was used.

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ INDONESIAN-ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF DYSPHEMISM AND EUPHEMISM EXPRESSION ON ONLINE NEWS TEXT

The aim of this research is to find out the forms and meaning changes of dysphemism and euphemism expression on online news text used in Indonesian-English translation. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and document analysis used as the instrument. The participant in this research was nine students of 6th semester of English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Cirebon in the academic year of 2022/2023. Data collection was collected with documents students’ translation result in translating online news text. The results showed that five euphemisms were found, namely colloquial, jargon, understatement, hyperbole, circumlocution and one for one substitutions. Meanwhile, the forms of dysphemism found were IST dysphemism (racist) and Derogatory or Disrespectful Terms Invoking Contempt for the Character Intended. This research also shows that euphemism and dysphemism experienced meaning changes.

Adjustments in Indonesian-English Translation of Public Signs in Bali

Public signs that are written in two languages are language phenomena found in some regions in Bali. This study is to explore the translation of public signs from Indonesian into English found in Bali. Deploying the concept of pragmatic equivalence (House, 2015) and translation shifts (Catford, 1965), this study focuses on the adjustments found in the translation of public signs from Indonesian into English. The data were taken from the public signs found in Badung regency and Denpasar city, Bali province, Indonesia by taking photos. The finding reveals that public signs in Bali are realized in the forms of non-sentence and sentence. The non-sentence used includes noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverbial phrase, and preposition. Public signs in the form of sentence include declarative, interrogative, and imperative sentence. To achieve the equivalence, the source public signs are rendered by re-contextualizing their forms in target language. The re-contextualization includes the change from sentence into non-sentence, non-sentence into sentence, one type of sentence into another type, one form of non-sentence into another form, the change of unit and of phrase/clause structure.

Cognitive behaviors in Indonesian-English translation: Exploring translation processes

This present study investigated the cognitive behaviors in the processes of Indonesian-English translation. Two research questions were employed to find out; 1) what types of cognitive behaviors emerge in the translation processes, 2) and which types of cognitive behavior are the most dominant in the translation process? The data were taken from screen recording of translator activities in video supplemented by think-aloud protocols in TransCon6_ID.mp4 entitled "Panorama Sumba." The data were analysed qualitatively by following the steps: transcribing, identifying, classifying, and interpreting (Bailey, 2008). The result reveals that the translator uses several cognitive behaviors such as generating ideas, revising, elaborating, clarifying, retrieving, rehearsing, referencing or resourcing, and summarizing. However, the translator's most dominant behavior is referencing by seeking the dictionaries to solve the translation problem.

PROPER NAMES IN THE INDONESIAN-ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF NOVEL LASKAR PELANGI: A TRANSLATION PROCEDURES ANALYSIS

Translation of literary works is not simply a rendering process from one language to another. It requires the choice of appropriate methods and procedures in order to produce a good-quality translation. The purpose of this study, is to reveal the translation procedures used by the translator in the Indonesian-English translation of the novel Laskar Pelangi, the Rainbow Troops. The procedures refer to the theory of translation suggested by Newmark. This study designed as qualitative study, namely Descriptive Translation Study (DTS). The data are collected using document procedure and then analyzed using thematic analysis. The result of this study shows that there are 327 PN found, and 223 of them have the equivalent translation in TL. There are twelve procedures used by the translator that include addition (3%), couplets (16%), cultural equivalent (2%), expansion (3%), reduction (6%), functional equivalent (4%), recognized translation (9%), through translation (11%), transference (39%), transposition (2%), and modulation (0.4%). Transference procedure dominates the procedures. This finding implies that the translation tends to be oriented to SL (emphasis on SL).

Indonesian Government’s Motive and Literary Taste: A Perspective on the Translation Funding Program (TFP)

The translation Funding Program (TFP) was initiated concerning the Indonesian government agenda to be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) 2015. As a result, it produced many Indonesian-English literary translations, particularly the two from Yogyakarta. By applying the Bourdieusian approach to cultural production, this study is arranged to unravel the government’s motive and literary taste behind the execution of that program, especially through the production of two literary works, “Pilgrimage in the Land of Java” and “Jatisaba.” This study is directed to figure out the importance of Indonesian-English translation for Indonesian literature and the criteria of literary works to be involved in such a government program. Therefore, the government’s motive and literary taste behind the TFP can be elaborated further. There are two primary techniques for the data collection in this research; 1. Digital library research is utilized to access relevant information about TFP, and 2. Interview the writers to get information about their experience participating in TFP. All collected data are synchronized in the analysis to explain the binding knot among the literary translation production, TFP, and FBF. As a result,the study reveals that there were some motives behind the production of literary translation through the TFP. Those motives were also related to the literary taste influenced by international demand.

Grammatical Mistakes of Indonesian-English Translation on Students’ Thesis Abstracts

Abstract: The study aimed to knowing the grammatical mistakes found in students’ translation texts especially in the thesis abstract made by students of the Business and Economy Faculty of Bengkulu University. It investigated how the grammatical rules were implemented in their thesis abstracts. The study used the analysis of English grammar rules based on grammatical theories. The documents were used as the main data in this study, there were ten thesis abstracts made by the students. The results showed that there were 38 grammatical mistakes found. The most frequent grammatical mistakes made by students were word choice, word order, verb + agreement, and tenses. Then, at the end of the analysis, researchers gave the model of improvement based on the grammatical rules toward the grammatical mistakes that researchers found. This step was very important because the translation was about how we transferred the source language to the target language in equal meaning. Abstak: Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesalahan tata bahasa yang ditemukan pada teks terjemahan mahasiswa khususnya pada abstrak skripsi yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa Fakultas Bisnis dan Ekonomi Universitas Bengkulu. Ini memeriksa bagaimana aturan tata bahasa diterapkan dalam abstrak tesis mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis aturan tata bahasa Inggris berdasarkan teori tata bahasa. Data utama dalam penelitian ini berbentuk dokumen, yaitu sepuluh abstrak skripsi yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 38 kesalahan tata bahasa. Kesalahan tata bahasa yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah pilihan kata, urutan kata, kata kerja + agreement, dan tenses. Kemudian, pada akhir analisis, peneliti memberikan model perbaikan berdasarkan kaidah gramatikal terhadap kesalahan gramatikal yang peneliti temukan. Langkah ini sangat penting, karena penerjemahan adalah tentang bagaimana kita mentransfer bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran dalam arti yang setara.

An Analysis of Socio Culturally Bound Expressions In Indonesian English Translation of The English Education Department At IAIN Metro In The Academic Year Of 2020/2021

The objectives of this research are to know the students’ difficulties in translating the socio culturally-bound Expressions in Indonesian- English translation, and to analyze the cause of the students’ in translating the socio culturally-bound Expressions in Indonesian- English translation. The researcher analyzed those phenomena based on the consideration of the students’ problem in translation investigated in the process of pre-survey. Therefore, it is hoped that this research is beneficial in illustrating the phenomena of translating the socio culturally-bound expression. The method of this research was qualitative research in the form of a case study carried out at IAIN Metro. The primary source of this research is the translation assignment result of the students’ of IAIN Metro in academic year 2020/2021. The total numbers of the students’ are 20 students. The researcher uses documentation and interview in collecting the data. The documentation was conducted to know the students’ difficulties in translating the socio culturally-bound Expressions in Indonesian- English. The interview was conducted to analyze the cause of the students’ in translating the socio culturally-bound Expressions in Indonesian- English translation. The research results show the students’ translation of socio culturally-bound expression in Indonesian- English translation that consist of that consist of 85 % inappropriate use of socio cultural bound expression and 15% appropriate use of socio cultural bound expression. In addition, the second research result is about the causes of the students’ difficulties in translating the socio culturally- bound expressions in Indonesian- English translation caused by the translator's lack of knowledge in both languages in general and in the significance of the functional equivalence in particular, limited linguistic competence, their poor pragmatic competence in the target language, lack of cultural awareness and lack of cultural interaction and experience.

Translation Quality Assessment on Medan City Tourism Official Web Pages

This research was conducted to analyze the quality of the translation on the Medan City Tourism web pages. In this research, the researcher used the translation quality assessment model proposed by Nababan et al. The TQA model by Nababan et al. focuses on three aspects, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The final result of measuring these three aspects is the total value for the quality of the translation on a scale of 1-3. This research has the objectives to: 1) analyze the accuracy of the Indonesian- English translation of the Medan Tourism web page 2) to analyze the acceptability of the Indonesian-English translation of the Medan Tourism web page 3) to analyze the readability of the Indonesian-English translation of the Medan Tourism web page 4) to analyze the total quality of the Indonesian-English translation of the Medan Tourism web pages. There were three professional translators as the raters who helped in assessing the text of the Medan City Tourism web pages. In general, the results of this research indicate that the translation quality of the Medan City Tourism web page is accurate, quite acceptable, and quite readable. The score for the accuracy aspect is 2.7, for the acceptability aspect is 2.2, for the readability aspect is 2.2 and the total quality of the translation is 2.4.

TRANSLATING MOCHTAR LUBIS’S SHORT STORY “KULI KONTRAK” INTO ENGLISH: A NOVICE TRANSLATOR’S AUTOETHNOGRAPHY

This article is of reflection category exploring the common mistakes often occur in translating Indonesian literary texts into English by a non-native speaker of English. It argues that translation of literary texts is meticulous as it should involve interpretation and fluency in both source and target languages as well as creativity in order that the translated texts communicate equally well. It is the communicative power of translation that makes this undertaking of language transfer miraculous. Applying sufficient principles in translation and creative writing method, this article exemplifies the translation process of Mochtar Lubis’s short story “Kuli Kontrak” into “The Contract Coolies” that appears in the Your Story page of California-based Dalang Publishing bi-lingual website. Autoethnography is the method used in reporting the results. Three main problems that ensue in the Indonesian-English translation of this short story include (1) the concept of time, (2) the non-idiomatic use of body-parts, and (3) the unnecessary use of object construction/ passive voice that often do not translate well in English. By tackling these problems, the English reader may hopefully obtain the meaning-message of the short story as closely as possible to that acquired by Indonesian readers.

The Unnaturalness Of Indonesian Public Signs Translation Into English In Medan

This research aimed to discover (1) the kinds of unnatural Indonesian-English translation of public signs in Medan city; (2) To investigate the appropriate techniques to avoid the unnatural Indonesian-English translation of public signs in Medan city. This research was done by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were Indonesian-English public signs found in Medan city. The data were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings of this research showed that: (1) there were four kinds of unnatural translation found in Indonesian-English translation of public signs in Medan city. They were spelling mistakes, change or loss information, grammatical mistakes and inappropriate choice of words; (2) There were some techniques can be used to avoid the unnatural translation found in Indonesian-English translation of public signs in Medan city. They were borrowing, adaptation, and transposition technique.

AN ANALYSIS OF LEARNER LANGUAGE IN INDONESIAN-ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH EDUCATIONAL STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITAS NAHDLATUL ULAMA LAMPUNG

Translation becomes so important since it is the process of replacing the source language into the target language without replacing the intended meaning. The learners usually bring their previous competence of language on performing the second language. The communication process either spoken or written is the way to interpret the other people’s language even in different culture or language. Thus, the purpose of the source language in the text delivered accurately.This research was aimed at describing learner languages phenomena related to the five procedures of translation then showing the precentage of learner language in translation procedures from Indonesian to English.The data collecting methods used interview and documentation. The data was gathered from the students’ result of translation 2 semester test at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Lampung. The research was conducted toward thirty three of the sixth semester students of English Educational Study Program of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Lampung .the result of the research showed that most of the students’ learner languages and errors were found in translation procedures, the highest percentage of learner language in translation procedure in Indonesian-english translation was transposition, and the students didn’t understand about translation procedures.

Indonesian Fine Art Terms and Their English Equivalence

The objective of this study is to identify the procedures of translation of fine art terms from English into Indonesian found in the catalog of Kun Adnyana's paintings entitled Candra Sangkala and to identify linguistic phenomena that arise from the translation. The catalog promotes the work of art and provides as much information as possible so that the work of the artist can be more widely appreciated. Therefore, the specific terms used in this fine art text should be translated appropriately in order to communicate the messages accurately, readably and naturally. The method used in this research was qualitative method which was conducted by doing content analysis in accordance with the theories of translation. This study found that the translation of fine art terms from Indonesian to English was conducted through seven procedures, namely couplet consisting of shift and reduction and expansion, second couplet, which is the combination of shift and literal translation, descriptive equivalent, reduction and expansion, literal translation, shift, and transference. The application of these procedures lead to two interesting phenomena that occur in the translation of Indonesian-English translation of fine art terms, i.e. (1) the use of equivalents that are previously naturalized from English into Indonesian and several terms that are literally translated and (2) the combination of more than one procedure of translation that is irrefutable in translating phrases. All of the procedures were utilized to meet the accuracy, naturalness and acceptability in translation.

ANALISIS KESALAHAN TERJEMAHAN TEKS PANDUAN DARI BAHASA INDONESIA KE BAHASA INGGRIS

The study aims at analyzing translation errors done by the 5th semester students at STBA LIA who were taking Indonesian-ENglish Translation Workshop. There are 28 participants in this study and the data are the translation of manual text which has been adapted and analyzed by using the 12 translation editing and revision by Mossop (2014). These parameters are normally used by editors in editing and revising translation work. The findings show that from that of 12 parameters, the mostly found parameters are mechanics with 46% occurrences, accuracy 13 %, sublanguage 11%, whereas the other parameters such as smoothness has 8.4% occurrences, layout 7.4%, idiom 7%, completeness 4%, and logic 3.2%. The conclusions show that the participants do not have problems at understanding the source text, but they do experience problems in the English’s, as the target language, grammar and natural language usage in English. In addition, they also have problems in choosing the right terminology, and also the usage of writing.

Lexical Error Analysis of Indonesian-English Translation of Texts in Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum

The current research aims to examine lexical errors in Indonesian-English translated texts in Museum Dewantara Kirti Griya. The classification of Lexical Errors proposed by Legenhausen (1975, as cited in James, 2013) is applied in analysing the texts. From 43 texts, the result indicates that there are 88 errors, classified into formal errors (62,5%) and semantic errors (37,5%). The first one deals with the arrangement of words and phrases, while the second deals with meaning and collocation. The most common errors are about the confusion between concepts and terms. This happens when the translator meets local-cultural terms in the SL that needs extra effort to translate.

Evaluating The Quality of The Indonesia-English Translation of Research Abstracts Written By The Students Of Harapan Bangsa University

This study was focused on evaluating the quality of the Indonesian-English translation of the research abstract written by the students of Harapan Bangsa University. The analysis included the analysis of translation quality in terms of accuracy, naturalness, acceptability, and readability as well as the translation ideology. The results of the study showed that the accuracy of the research abstract translation was dominated by highly accurate translation and less accurate translation in the target language which shared the same percentage as many as 36%. In terms of naturalness, it showed that 34% of the translation was categorized into highly natural. With regard to translation acceptability, it showed that 61% of the data belonged to acceptable. Meanwhile, in terms of translation readability, it showed that 75% of the data was categorized as readable. The register and genre of the research abstract texts and its translation were kept equivalent and holding the same purposes as it was translated overtly. In translating the research abstract text, it is suggested that the translator could highly consider the accuracy, naturalness, acceptability, and readability of the translation, particularly for target readers. With regard to the translation ideology, the translator is suggested to grasp the register and genre of the text before the translation process and regard the target readers to determine whether the text should be translated covertly or overtly.

Translation Techniques and Quality of Indonesian-English Translation of Captions in Pekalongan Batik Museum

This study aims to classify and identify how the translation techniques and quality achieved in Indonesian-English translation of Captions in Pekalongan Batik Museum. The aim is broken down into translation techniques, accuracy, acceptability, readability, and the translation quality influenced by translation techniques. The data of this study is the captions in Pekalongan batik museum written in Indonesian and English. The limitation of this study covers up the translation techniques and quality of Indonesian-English Translation of captions in Pekalongan Batik Museum. Descriptive qualitative research is employed in this study. The data gathered through 331 sentences for translation techniques and 30 texts in the form of captions for being investigated in translation quality. The results show that thirteen of the eighteen translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) are chosen by the translator. They are: literal translation, reduction, borrowing, addition, generalization, modulation, established equivalent, transposition, adaptation, particularization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, and calque. The result of the analysis in the translation quality shows that the captions in Pekalongan batik museum as accurate, acceptable, and readable translation.
