Dosage sensitivity shapes balanced expression and gene longevity of homoeologs after whole-genome duplications in angiosperms.

Following whole-genome duplication (WGD), duplicate gene pairs (homoeologs) can evolve varying degrees of expression divergence. However, the determinants influencing these relative expression level differences (RFPKM) between homoeologs remain elusive. In this study, we analyzed the RFPKM between homoeologs in 3 angiosperms, Nymphaea colorata, Nelumbo nucifera, and Acorus tatarinowii, all having undergone a single WGD since the origin of angiosperms. Our results show significant positive correlations in RFPKM of homoeologs among tissues within the same species, and among orthologs across these 3 species, indicating convergent expression balance/bias between homoeologous gene copies following independent WGDs. We linked RFPKM between homoeologs to gene attributes associated with dosage-balance constraints, such as protein-protein interactions, lethal-phenotype scores in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) orthologs, domain numbers, and expression breadth. Notably, homoeologs with lower RFPKM often had more interactions and higher lethal-phenotype scores, indicating selective pressures favoring balanced expression. Also, homoeologs with lower RFPKM were more likely to be retained after WGDs in angiosperms. Within Nelumbo, greater RFPKM between homoeologs correlated with increased cis- and trans-regulatory differentiation between species, highlighting the ongoing escalation of gene expression divergence. We further found that expression degeneration in 1 copy of homoeologs is inclined toward nonfunctionalization. Our research highlights the importance of balanced expression, shaped by dosage-balance constraints, in the evolutionary retention of homoeologs in plants.

Multiomic analysis of genes related to oil traits in legumes provide insights into lipid metabolism and oil richness in soybean

Soybean (Glycine max) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) diverged approximately 19 million years ago. While these species share a whole-genome duplication (WGD), the Glycine lineage experienced a second, independent WGD. Despite the significance of these WGDs, their impact on gene families related to oil-traits remains poorly understood. Here, we report an in-depth investigation of oil-related gene families in soybean, common bean, and twenty-eight other legume species. We adopted a systematic approach that included a total of 605 RNAseq samples for transcriptome and co-expression analyse s, identification of orthologous groups, gene duplication modes and evolutionary rates, and family expansions and contractions. We curated a list of oil candidate genes and found that 91.5% of the families containing these genes expanded in soybean in comparison to common bean. Notably, we observed an expansion of triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis (∼3:1) and an erosion of TAG degradation (∼1.4:1) families in soybean in comparison to common bean. In addition, TAG degradation genes were two-fold more expressed in common bean than in soybean, suggesting that oil degradation is also important for the sharply contrasting seed oil contents in these species. We found 17 transcription factor hub genes that are likely regulators of lipid metabolism. Finally, we inferred expanded and contracted families and correlated these patterns with oil content found in different legume species. In summary, our results do not only shed light on the evolution of oil metabolism genes in soybean, but also present multifactorial evidence supporting the prioritization of promising candidate genes that, if experimentally validated, could accelerate the development of high-oil soybean varieties.

Convergent and/or parallel evolution of RNA-binding proteins in angiosperms after polyploidization.

Increasing studies suggest that the biased retention of stress-related transcription factors (TFs) after whole-genome duplications (WGDs) could rewire gene transcriptional networks, facilitating plant adaptation to challenging environments. However, the role of posttranscriptional factors (e.g. RNA-binding proteins, RBPs) following WGDs has been largely ignored. Uncovering thousands of RBPs in 21 representative angiosperm species, we integrate genomic, transcriptomic, regulatomic, and paleotemperature datasets to unravel their evolutionary trajectories and roles in adapting to challenging environments. We reveal functional enrichments of RBP genes in stress responses and identify their convergent retention across diverse angiosperms from independent WGDs, coinciding with global cooling periods. Numerous RBP duplicates derived from WGDs are then identified as cold-induced. A significant overlap of 29 orthogroups between WGD-derived and cold-induced RBP genes across diverse angiosperms highlights a correlation between WGD and cold stress. Notably, we unveil an orthogroup (Glycine-rich RNA-binding Proteins 7/8, GRP7/8) and relevant TF duplicates (CCA1/LHY, RVE4/8, CBF2/4, etc.), co-retained in different angiosperms post-WGDs. Finally, we illustrate their roles in rewiring circadian and cold-regulatory networks at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels during global cooling. Altogether, we underline the adaptive evolution of RBPs in angiosperms after WGDs during global cooling, improving our understanding of plants surviving periods of environmental turmoil.

The haplotype-resolved autotetraploid genome assembly provides insights into the genomic evolution and fruit divergence in wax apple (Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. and Perry)

Abstract Wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) is an economically important fruit crop with great potential value to human health because of its richness in antioxidant substances. Here, we present a haplotype-resolved autotetraploid genome assembly of the wax apple with a size of 1.59 Gb. Comparative genomic analysis revealed three rounds of whole-genome duplication (WGD) events, including two independent WGDs after WGT-γ. Resequencing analysis of 35 accessions partitioned these individuals into two distinct groups, including 28 landraces and seven cultivated species, and several genes subject to selective sweeps possibly contributed to fruit growth, including the KRP1-like, IAA17-like, GME-like, and FLACCA-like genes. Transcriptome analysis of three different varieties during flower and fruit development identified key genes related to fruit size, sugar content, and male sterility. We found that AP2 also affected fruit size by regulating sepal development in wax apples. The expression of sugar transport-related genes (SWEETs and SUTs) was high in ‘ZY’, likely contributing to its high sugar content. Male sterility in ‘Tub’ was associated with tapetal abnormalities due to the decreased expression of DYT1, TDF1, and AMS, which affected early tapetum development. The chromosome-scale genome and large-scale transcriptome data presented in this study offer new valuable resources for biological research on S. samarangense and shed new light on fruit size control, sugar metabolism, and male sterility regulatory metabolism in wax apple.

The chromosome-scale assembly of the Salvia rosmarinus genome provides insight into carnosic acid biosynthesis.

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is considered a sacred plant because of its special fragrance and is commonly used in cooking and traditional medicine. Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-level assembly of the S. rosmarinus genome of 1.11Gb in size; the genome has a scaffold N50 value of 95.5Mb and contains 40 701 protein-coding genes. In contrast to other diploid Labiataceae, an independent whole-genome duplication event occurred in S. rosmarinus at approximately 15 million years ago. Transcriptomic comparison of two S. rosmarinus cultivars with contrasting carnosic acid (CA) content revealed 842 genes significantly positively associated with CA biosynthesis in S. rosmarinus. Many of these genes have been reported to be involved in CA biosynthesis previously, such as genes involved in the mevalonate/methylerythritol phosphate pathways and CYP71-coding genes. Based on the genomes and these genes, we propose a model of CA biosynthesis in S. rosmarinus. Further, comparative genome analysis of the congeneric species revealed the species-specific evolution of CA biosynthesis genes. The genes encoding diterpene synthase and the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) family of CA synthesis-associated genes form a biosynthetic gene cluster (CPSs-KSLs-CYP76AHs) responsible for the synthesis of leaf and root diterpenoids, which are located on S. rosmarinus chromosomes 1 and 2, respectively. Such clustering is also observed in other sage (Salvia) plants, thus suggesting that genes involved in diterpenoid synthesis are conserved in the Labiataceae family. These findings provide new insights into the synthesis of aromatic terpenoids and their regulation.

A reference-grade genome assembly for Astragalus mongholicus and insights into the biosynthesis and high accumulation of triterpenoids and flavonoids in its roots

Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus (AMM), a member of the Leguminosae, is one of the most important medicinal plants worldwide. The dried roots of AMM have a wide range of pharmacological effects and are a traditional Chinese medicine. Here, we report the first chromosome-level reference genome of AMM, comprising nine pseudochromosomes with a total size of 1.47 Gb and 27 868 protein-encoding genes. Comparative genomic analysis reveals that AMM has not experienced an independent whole-genome duplication (WGD) event after the WGD event shared by the Papilionoideae species. Analysis of long terminal repeat retrotransposons suggests a recent burst of these elements at approximately 0.13 million years ago, which may explain the large size of the AMM genome. Multiple gene families involved in the biosynthesis of triterpenoids and flavonoids were expanded, and our data indicate that tandem duplication has been the main driver for expansion of these families. Among the expanded families, the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase gene family was primarily expressed in the roots of AMM, suggesting their roles in the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid compounds. The functional versatility of 2,3-oxidosqualene cyclase genes in cluster III may play a critical role in the diversification of triterpenoids in AMM. Our findings provide novel insights into triterpenoid and flavonoid biosynthesis and can facilitate future research on the genetics and medical applications of AMM.

The chromosome-level holly (Ilex latifolia) genome reveals key enzymes in triterpenoid saponin biosynthesis and fruit color change.

The Ilex L. (hollies) genus of Aquifoliaceae shows high species diversity in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and South America. Throughout the range of the genus, Ilex species have been widely used in beverage and medicine production and as ornamentals. Here, we assembled a high-quality, chromosome-level genome of Ilex latifolia, which has extremely high economic value because of its useful secondary metabolite production and the high ornamental value of its decorative red berries. The 99.8% genome sequence was anchored to 20 pseudochromosomes, with a total length of 766.02 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 33.45 Mb. Based on the comparative genomic analysis of 14 angiosperm species, we recovered I. latifolia as the sister group to all other campanulids. Two whole-genome duplication (WGD) events were identified in hollies: one shared ancient WGD in the ancestor of all eudicots and a recent and independent WGD in hollies. We performed a genome-wide search to screen candidate genes involved in the biosynthesis of pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins in I. latifolia. Three subfamilies of CYP450 (CYP71A, CYP72A, and CYP716A) appear to have expanded. The transcriptomic analysis of I. latifolia leaves at five developmental stages revealed that two CYP716A genes and one CYP72A gene probably play important roles in this biosynthetic pathway. In addition, we totally identified 12 genes in the biosynthesis pathways of pelargonidin and cyanidin and observed their differential expression in green and red fruit pericarps, suggesting an association between pelargonidin and cyanidin biosynthesis and fruit pericarp color change. The accumulation of pelargonidin and cyanidin is expected to play an important role in the ornamental value of I. latifolia. Altogether, this study elucidated the molecular basis of the medicinal and ornamental value of I. latifolia, providing a data basis and promising clues for further applications.

Multi-omics reveal differentiation and maintenance of dimorphic flowers in an alpine plant on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Dimorphic flowers growing on a single individual plant play a critical role in extreme adaption and reproductive assurance in plants and have high ecological and evolutionary significance. However, the omics bases underlying such a differentiation and maintenance remain largely unknown. We aimed to investigate this through genomic, transcriptome and metabolomic analyses of dimorphic flowers in an alpine biennial, Sinoswertia tetraptera (Gentianaceae). A high-quality chromosome-level genome sequence (903Mb) was first assembled for S.tetraptera with 31,359 protein-coding genes annotated. Two rounds of recent independent whole-genome duplication (WGD) were revealed. Numerous genes from the recent species-specific WGD were found to be differentially expressed in the two types of flowers, and this may have helped contribute to the origin of this innovative trait. The genes with contrasting expressions between flowers were related to biosynthesis of hormones, floral pigments (carotenoids and flavonoids) and iridoid compounds, which are involved in both flower development and colour. Metabolomic analyses similarly suggested differential concentrations of these chemicals in the two types of flowers. The expression interactions between multiple genes may together lead to contrasting morphology and chemical concentration and open versus closed pollination of the dimorphic flowers in this species for reproductive assurance.

Buxus and Tetracentron genomes help resolve eudicot genome history

Ancient whole-genome duplications (WGDs) characterize many large angiosperm lineages, including angiosperms themselves. Prominently, the core eudicot lineage accommodates 70% of all angiosperms and shares ancestral hexaploidy, termed gamma. Gamma arose via two WGDs that occurred early in eudicot history; however, the relative timing of these is unclear, largely due to the lack of high-quality genomes among early-diverging eudicots. Here, we provide complete genomes for Buxus sinica (Buxales) and Tetracentron sinense (Trochodendrales), representing the lineages most closely related to core eudicots. We show that Buxus and Tetracentron are both characterized by independent WGDs, resolve relationships among early-diverging eudicots and their respective genomes, and use the RACCROCHE pipeline to reconstruct ancestral genome structure at three key phylogenetic nodes of eudicot diversification. Our reconstructions indicate genome structure remained relatively stable during early eudicot diversification, and reject hypotheses of gamma arising via inter-lineage hybridization between ancestral eudicot lineages, involving, instead, only stem lineage core eudicot ancestors.

High-quality genome assembly of an important biodiesel plant, Euphorbia lathyris L

Caper spurge, Euphorbia lathyris L., is an important energy crop and medicinal crop. Here, we generated a high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly of caper spurge using Oxford Nanopore sequencing, Illumina sequencing, and Hi-C technology. The final genome assembly was ∼988.9 Mb in size, 99.8% of which could be grouped into 10 pseudochromosomes, with contig and scaffold N50 values of 32.6 and 95.7 Mb, respectively. A total of 651.4 Mb repetitive sequences and 36,342 protein-coding genes were predicted in the genome assembly. Comparative genomic analysis showed that caper spurge and castor bean clustered together. We found that no independent whole-genome duplication event had occurred in caper spurge after its split from the castor bean, and recent substantial amplification of long terminal repeat retrotransposons has contributed significantly to its genome expansion. Furthermore, based on gene homology searching, we identified a number of candidate genes involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and triacylglycerols. The reference genome presented here will be highly useful for the further study of the genetics, genomics, and breeding of this high-value crop, as well as for evolutionary studies of spurge family and angiosperms.

A chromosome-level Camptotheca acuminata genome assembly provides insights into the evolutionary origin of camptothecin biosynthesis

Camptothecin and its derivatives are widely used for treating malignant tumors. Previous studies revealed only a limited number of candidate genes for camptothecin biosynthesis in Camptotheca acuminata, and it is still poorly understood how its biosynthesis of camptothecin has evolved. Here, we report a high-quality, chromosome-level C. acuminata genome assembly. We find that C. acuminata experiences an independent whole-genome duplication and numerous genes derive from it are related to camptothecin biosynthesis. Comparing with Catharanthus roseus, the loganic acid O-methyltransferase (LAMT) in C. acuminata fails to convert loganic acid into loganin. Instead, two secologanic acid synthases (SLASs) convert loganic acid to secologanic acid. The functional divergence of the LAMT gene and positive evolution of two SLAS genes, therefore, both contribute greatly to the camptothecin biosynthesis in C. acuminata. Our results emphasize the importance of high-quality genome assembly in identifying genetic changes in the evolutionary origin of a secondary metabolite.

The Genome Sequence of Alpine Megacarpaea delavayi Identifies Species-Specific Whole-Genome Duplication.

Megacarpaea delavayi (Brassicaceae), a plant found the high mountains of southwest China at high altitudes (3000–4800 m), is used as a vegetable or medicine. Here, we report a draft genome for this species. The assembly genome of M. delavayi is 883 Mb, and 61.59% of the genome is composed of repeat sequences. Annotation of the genome identified a total of 41,114 protein-coding genes. We found that M. delavayi experienced an independent whole-genome duplication (WGD), paralleling those independent WGDs in Iberis, Biscutella, and Anastatica in the early Miocene. Phylogenetic analyses based on the single-copy genes confirmed the position of the genus Megacarpaea within the expanded lineage II of the family and resolved its basal divergence to a subclade consisting of Anastatica, Iberis, and Biscutella. Species-specific and fast-evolving genes in M. delavayi are mainly involved in “DNA repair” and “response to UV-B radiation.” These genetic changes may together help this species survive in high-altitude environments. The reference genome reported here provides a valuable resource for studying adaptation of this and other alpine plants to the high-altitude habitats.

Phylogeny and multiple independent whole-genome duplication events in the Brassicales.

PremiseWhole‐genome duplications (WGDs) are prevalent throughout the evolutionary history of plants. For example, dozens of WGDs have been phylogenetically localized across the order Brassicales, specifically, within the family Brassicaceae. A WGD event has also been identified in the Cleomaceae, the sister family to Brassicaceae, yet its placement, as well as that of WGDs in other families in the order, remains unclear.MethodsPhylo‐transcriptomic data were generated and used to infer a nuclear phylogeny for 74 Brassicales taxa. Genome survey sequencing was also performed on 66 of those taxa to infer a chloroplast phylogeny. These phylogenies were used to assess and confirm relationships among the major families of the Brassicales and within Brassicaceae. Multiple WGD inference methods were then used to assess the placement of WGDs on the nuclear phylogeny.ResultsWell‐supported chloroplast and nuclear phylogenies for the Brassicales and the putative placement of the Cleomaceae‐specific WGD event Th‐ɑ are presented. This work also provides evidence for previously hypothesized WGDs, including a well‐supported event shared by at least two members of the Resedaceae family, and a possible event within the Capparaceae.ConclusionsPhylogenetics and the placement of WGDs within highly polyploid lineages continues to be a major challenge. This study adds to the conversation on WGD inference difficulties by demonstrating that sampling is especially important for WGD identification and phylogenetic placement. Given its economic importance and genomic resources, the Brassicales continues to be an ideal group for assessing WGD inference methods.

Cercis: A Non-polyploid Genomic Relic Within the Generally Polyploid Legume Family.

Based on evolutionary, phylogenomic, and synteny analyses of genome sequences for more than a dozen diverse legume species as well as analysis of chromosome counts across the legume family, we conclude that the genus Cercis provides a plausible model for an early evolutionary form of the legume genome. The small Cercis genus is in the earliest-diverging clade in the earliest-diverging legume subfamily (Cercidoideae). The Cercis genome is physically small, and has accumulated mutations at an unusually slow rate compared to other legumes. Chromosome counts across 477 legume genera, combined with phylogenetic reconstructions and histories of whole-genome duplications, suggest that the legume progenitor had 7 chromosomes – as does Cercis. We propose a model in which a legume progenitor, with 7 chromosomes, diversified into species that would become the Cercidoideae and the remaining legume subfamilies; then speciation in the Cercidoideae gave rise to the progenitor of the Cercis genus. There is evidence for a genome duplication in the remaining Cercidoideae, which is likely due to allotetraploidy involving hybridization between a Cercis progenitor and a second diploid species that existed at the time of the polyploidy event. Outside the Cercidoideae, a set of probably independent whole-genome duplications gave rise to the five other legume subfamilies, at least four of which have predominant counts of 12–14 chromosomes among their early-diverging taxa. An earlier study concluded that independent duplications occurred in the Caesalpinioideae, Detarioideae, and Papilionoideae. We conclude that Cercis may be unique among legumes in lacking evidence of polyploidy, a process that has shaped the genomes of all other legumes thus far investigated.

The Tartary Buckwheat Genome Provides Insights into Rutin Biosynthesis and Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) is an important pseudocereal crop that is strongly adapted to growth in adverse environments. Its gluten-free grain contains complete proteins with a well-balanced composition of essential amino acids and is a rich source of beneficial phytochemicals that provide significant health benefits. Here, we report a high-quality, chromosome-scale Tartary buckwheat genome sequence of 489.3 Mb that is assembled by combining whole-genome shotgun sequencing of both Illumina short reads and single-molecule real-time long reads, sequence tags of a large DNA insert fosmid library, Hi-C sequencing data, and BioNano genome maps. We annotated 33 366 high-confidence protein-coding genes based on expression evidence. Comparisons of the intra-genome with the sugar beet genome revealed an independent whole-genome duplication that occurred in the buckwheat lineage after they diverged from the common ancestor, which was not shared with rosids or asterids. The reference genome facilitated the identification of many new genes predicted to be involved in rutin biosynthesis and regulation, aluminum stress resistance, and in drought and cold stress responses. Our data suggest that Tartary buckwheat's ability to tolerate high levels of abiotic stress is attributed to the expansion of several gene families involved in signal transduction, gene regulation, and membrane transport. The availability of these genomic resources will facilitate the discovery of agronomically and nutritionally important genes and genetic improvement of Tartary buckwheat.

High Gene Family Turnover Rates and Gene Space Adaptation in the Compact Genome of the Carnivorous Plant Utricularia gibba.

Utricularia gibba is an aquatic carnivorous plant with highly specialized morphology, featuring fibrous floating networks of branches and leaf-like organs, no recognizable roots, and bladder traps that capture and digest prey. We recently described the compressed genome of U. gibba as sufficient to control the development and reproduction of a complex organism. We hypothesized intense deletion pressure as a mechanism whereby most noncoding DNA was deleted, despite evidence for three independent whole-genome duplications (WGDs). Here, we explore the impact of intense genome fractionation in the evolutionary dynamics of U. gibba's functional gene space. We analyze U. gibba gene family turnover by modeling gene gain/death rates under a maximum-likelihood statistical framework. In accord with our deletion pressure hypothesis, we show that the U. gibba gene death rate is significantly higher than those of four other eudicot species. Interestingly, the gene gain rate is also significantly higher, likely reflecting the occurrence of multiple WGDs and possibly also small-scale genome duplications. Gene ontology enrichment analyses of U. gibba-specific two-gene orthogroups, multigene orthogroups, and singletons highlight functions that may represent adaptations in an aquatic carnivorous plant. We further discuss two homeodomain transcription factor gene families (WOX and HDG/HDZIP-IV) showing conspicuous differential expansions and contractions in U. gibba. Our results 1) reconcile the compactness of the U. gibba genome with its accommodation of a typical number of genes for a plant genome, and 2) highlight the role of high gene family turnover in the evolutionary diversification of U. gibba's functional gene space and adaptations to its unique lifestyle and highly specialized body plan.

Ancient genome duplications during the evolution of kiwifruit (Actinidia) and related Ericales

To assess the number and phylogenetic distribution of large-scale genome duplications in the ancestry of Actinidia, publicly available expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) for members of the Actinidiaceae and related Ericales, including tea (Camellia sinensis), were analysed. Synonymous divergences (K(s)) were calculated for all duplications within gene families and examined for evidence of large-scale duplication events. Phylogenetic comparisons for a selection of orthologues among several related species in Ericales and two outgroups permitted placement of duplication events in relation to lineage divergences. Gene ontology (GO) categories were analysed for each whole-genome duplication (WGD) and the whole transcriptome. Evidence for three ancient WGDs in Actinidia was found. Analyses of paleologue GO categories indicated a different pattern of retained genes for each genome duplication, but a pattern consistent with the dosage-balance hypothesis among all retained paleologues. This study provides evidence for one independent WGD in the ancestry of Actinidia (Ad-alpha), a WGD shared by Actinidia and Camellia (Ad-beta), and the well-established At-gamma WGD that occurred prior to the divergence of all taxa examined. More ESTs in other taxa are needed to elucidate which groups in Ericales share the Ad-beta or Ad-alpha duplications and their impact on diversification.

Gene loss and silencing in Tragopogon miscellus (Asteraceae): comparison of natural and synthetic allotetraploids

Whole-genome duplication (polyploidisation) is a widespread mechanism of speciation in plants. Over time, polyploid genomes tend towards a more diploid-like state, through downsizing and loss of duplicated genes (homoeologues), but relatively little is known about the timing of gene loss during polyploid formation and stabilisation. Several studies have also shown gene transcription to be affected by polyploidisation. Here, we examine patterns of gene loss in 10 sets of homoeologues in five natural populations of the allotetraploid Tragopogon miscellus that arose within the past 80 years following independent whole-genome duplication events. We also examine 44 first-generation synthetic allopolyploids of the same species. No cases of homoeologue loss arose in the first allopolyploid generation, but after 80 years, 1.6% of homoeologues were lost in natural populations. For seven homoeologue sets we also examined transcription, finding that 3.4% of retained homoeologues had been silenced in the natural populations, but none in the synthetic plants. The homoeologue losses and silencing events found were not fixed within natural populations and did not form a predictable pattern among populations. We therefore show haphazard loss and silencing of homoeologues, occurring within decades of polyploid formation in T. miscellus, but not in the initial generation.

Many gene and domain families have convergent fates following independent whole-genome duplication events in Arabidopsis, Oryza, Saccharomyces and Tetraodon

Genome duplication is potentially a good source of new genes, but such genes take time to evolve. We have found a group of "duplication-resistant" genes, which have undergone convergent restoration to singleton status following several independent genome duplications. Restoration of duplication-resistant genes to singleton status could be important to long-term survival of a polyploid lineage. Angiosperms show more frequent polyploidization and a higher degree of duplicate gene preservation than other paleopolyploids, making them well-suited to further study of duplication-resistant genes.
