Effectiveness and outcomes of endoscopic resection for superficial pharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas.

With the development of endoscopic imaging, superficial pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma can now be detected during routine endoscopy. Recently, the effectiveness of endoscopic resection for superficial pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma have been reported. This study had a retrospective single-center design that included patients with superficial pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent endoscopic resection. A total 47 patients with 53 lesions were analyzed. En bloc and R0 resection rates were 83.0% and 56.6%. Local recurrence and cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) were detected in 1 and 3 patients during follow-up. The macroscopic type 0-I was an independent factor for CLNM. The 3-year cumulative incidence of metachronous pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma following endoscopic resection was 33.0%, and the 5-year overall survival rate was 89.2%. Endoscopic resection is an effective treatment for superficial pharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas, and the macroscopic type 0-I is a useful predictor of CLNM.

The relationship between lobar distribution and primary lung cancer histological types

Background: Lung cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Accurate tumor location and subtype characterization are critical for optimizing treatment and predicting outcomes. This study aims to identify the relationship between lobar distribution and primary lung cancer histological types and describe the most recent patterns at the country-level origin. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a major tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh, including 165 patients recruited using purposive non-probability sampling. Data were collected using a semi-structured case record form and analyzed using SPSS version 28.0. Results: Tumors were most commonly found in the central area (58.2%). Squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent type (46.1%), followed by adenocarcinoma (38.8%), small cell carcinoma (13.9%), and large cell carcinoma (1.2%). The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma was significantly higher in the upper lobe of the right lung (55.9%) compared to other forms, particularly in the central region of the right lung (P < 0.001). Squamous cell carcinoma was more common in the lower part of the left lung (42.9%), while adenocarcinoma was exclusively observed in the lingular portion of the left lung (100%). The major bronchus of the left lung primarily exhibited squamous cell carcinoma (60%), but this finding was not statistically significant (p=0.899). Conclusion: The study highlights the significant association between lobar distribution and histological types of primary lung cancer, emphasizing the need for precise tumor characterization for better treatment strategies and prognostic evaluation.

Cancer risk by length of Barrett's esophagus in Japanese population: a nationwide multicenter retrospective cohort study.

The cancer risk for each length of Barrett's esophagus (BE) in Japanese is unknown. This nationwide, multi-institutional study aims to clarify the cancer risk by length of BE in the general Japanese population. Consecutive subjects who underwent upper endoscopic screening at 17 centers between 2013 and 2017 and had at least one follow-up endoscopy by December 2022 were included. The presence/absence of BE and, if present, its length were retrospectively assessed using the retrieved endoscopic images recorded at baseline. Information on the subsequent occurrence of esophageal adenocarcinoma and other upper gastrointestinal cancers was also collected. Cancer incidence was calculated and expressed as %/year. A total of 33,478 subjects were enrolled, and 17,884 (53.4%), 10,641 (31.8%), 4889 (14.6%), and 64 (0.2%) were diagnosed as absent BE, BE < 1cm, 1-3cm, and ≥ 3cm, respectively. During a median follow-up of 80months, 11 cases of esophageal adenocarcinoma developed. The annual incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma is 0%/year for absent BE, 0.0032 (0.00066-0.013)%/year for BE < 1cm, 0.026 (0.011-0.054)%/year for 1-3cm, and 0.58 (0.042-2.11)%/year for ≥ 3cm, respectively. Meanwhile, the incidence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and gastric cancer were 0.039 (0.031-0.049)%/year and 0.16 (0.14-0.18)%/year, respectively. By enrolling a large number of subjects with long-term follow-up, this study demonstrated that the risk of cancer increased steadily with increasing length of BE in the Japanese population. Therefore, it is important to consider the length of BE when determining the management strategy for BE.

Self-collected versus clinician-collected anal swabs for anal cancer screening: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) incidence is increasing globally. International consensus guidelines published in 2024 include HPV and/or cytology testing of anal swabs in those at greatest risk of ASCC. Self-collected anal swabs may be important for increasing screening uptake, but evidence is needed as to their equivalence to clinician-collected swabs. We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases for publications to 13 June 2023. Studies were included if reporting data on HPV testing, cytology testing, or acceptability, for both self- and clinician-collected anal swabs. Risk of bias was assessed using the QUADAS-2 assessment tool. The primary outcome was HPV and cytology sampling adequacy. Secondary outcomes were HPV and cytology results, and acceptability of collection methods. Thirteen papers describing 10 studies were eligible. Sample adequacy was comparable between self- and clinician-collected swabs for HPV testing (meta-adequacy ratio: 1.01 [95% CI 0.97-1.05]) but slightly lower for cytology by self-collection (meta-adequacy ratio: 0.91 [95% CI 0.88-0.95]). There was no significant difference in prevalence (meta-prevalence ratio: 0.83 (95% CI 0.65-1.07) for any HR-HPV, 0.98 (95% CI 0.84-1.14) for any HPV, and 0.68 (95% CI 0.33-1.37) for HPV16), or any cytological abnormality (meta-prevalence ratio 1.01 [95% CI 0.86-1.18]). Only three papers reported acceptability results. Findings indicate self-collection gives equivalent sample adequacy for HPV testing and ~ 10% inferior adequacy for cytological testing. Meta-prevalence was similar for HPV and cytology, but confidence intervals were wide. Larger studies are required to definitively assess use of self-collected swabs in anal cancer screening programs, including acceptability.

Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with DEK::AFF2 Rearrangement: An Aggressive Cancer with Bland Morphology.

DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinoma is a recently described cancer entity, with 29 cases reported to date. Occasionally, these carcinomas appear deceptively indistinguishable; however, specific morphological and phenotypic features suggest the presence of this rearrangement. However, the prognostic value of this diagnosis remains unclear. We aimed to report a new case series with histological, molecular, and clinical features. We collected data from 15 patients and investigated their phenotypes, including the expression profiles of CK7, P63/P40, PDL1, AFF2, and P16, morphological features, and associated prognostic data. We analyzed these data along with the previously published data. Most of these cases exhibited indicative morphological features, such as exophytic and endophytic papillary growth, nuclear monomorphism, and abundant neutrophil-rich inflammatory infiltrates. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the expression of AFF2 and squamous cell markers in all the patients. Overexpression of P16 was not detected, whereas CK7 and PDL1 were expressed variably. In our study cohort, a 50% progression or recurrence rate, 25% lymph node metastasis, 17% distant metastasis, and 18% disease-related death were identified, with a short follow-up time. DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinoma incidence is probably underestimated. The low-grade appearance of these tumors sometimes limits their detection. The rates of recurrence and metastasis seem to be high despite an often bland morphology. We propose AFF2 immunohistochemistry as an effective tool, and a diagnostic algorithm has been established to support accurate diagnosis of these tumors.

Clinicopathologic features and new factors affecting constitution of eyelid neoplasms: a 10-year multicentre experience in southern coastal China

ObjectiveThis study aims to delineate the key characteristics of eyelid neoplasms in central and southern coastal China and to explore potential factors affecting tumour development. MethodsThis was a retrospective, multicentre observational study. In total, 1302 cases of eyelid neoplasms diagnosed in 2 tertiary hospitals were reviewed from January 2013 to May 2023. Histogenesis, pathologic diagnosis, and potential risk factors were investigated, and the findings were compared with data from various regions and countries. Age- and sex-specific incidence rates, time trends, distributions across age groups, and the relationship with the Sociodemographic Index, latitude, and altitude were calculated. ResultsThere were 1162 benign (89.2%) and 140 malignant (10.8%) cases, representing 63 pathologic types. The median age of benign cases (50 years) was significantly lower than that of malignant cases (72 years) (P < 0.05). The most common benign and malignant lesions were intradermal nevus (28.83%) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (74.29%). A relatively younger median age (68 years) for sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) was observed, with a male preponderance (sex ratio 2:1). Analyses of the proportions of BCC, SGC, and squamous cell carcinoma in eyelid malignancies revealed significant regression equations (P < 0.05). ConclusionsMost eyelid neoplasms are of epithelial and melanocytic origin, with benign tumours being predominant. The regions with greater Sociodemographic Index exhibit a greater incidence of BCC and a lower incidence of squamous cell carcinoma and SGC. BCC appears to have a greater incidence in regions located at higher latitudes.

Association of CTLA-4 (AT)n Variants in Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients from Western Mexico.

The incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is constantly increasing, becoming a significant health problem. CTLA-4 is a critical immune checkpoint, and it has been suggested that a variant of variable-number tandem repeat in the 3'-UTR of its gene, known as (AT)n, may be associated with a higher susceptibility to some cancers; however, little is known about genetic variants of the CTLA-4 gene in NMSC. To establish the association of this genetic variant in the CTLA-4 gene with the susceptibility of NMSC carcinogenesis in the Western Mexican population, samples from 150 BCC patients, 150 SCC patients, and 150 healthy individuals as the reference group (RG) were analyzed by endpoint PCR, followed by electrophoresis to genotype the samples. We found that the short-repeat 104/104 bp genotype may be a risk factor for BBC carcinogens (OR = 2.92, p = 0.03), whereas the long-repeat 106/106 bp genotype may be a protective factor for both BCC (OR = 0.13, p = 0.01) and SCC (OR = 0.32, p = 0.01) susceptibility. Our results show that in the Western Mexican population, long-repeat (AT)n variants in the CTLA-4 gene are associated with a protective factor in BCC and SCC. In contrast, short repeats are associated with a risk factor.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma incidence: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common cancer globally in white ethinicity populations, and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common subtype. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted public and private healthcare systems. Many studies have reported reduced cancer diagnoses during the pandemic. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global cSCC and NMSC incidence is poorly reported. The aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global cSCC and NMSC incidence rates, compared with 2019 incidence rates. Two primary outcome measures were used: crude incidence rate ratios (CIRR) and age-standardised incidence rate ratios (ASIRR). A structured search was undertaken on 23 March 2023 using grey literature and four electronic databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE and Web of Science. Studies published before January 2020 were excluded. A quality assessment was undertaken using A. Lomas quality assessment tool. CIRR outcomes were synthesised in a meta-analysis, while ASIRR outcomes were narratively synthesised. Fourteen cancer registries were included, capturing data from 13 countries across Europe. Variation was observed in NMSC and cSCC incidence across the cancer registries. Pooled cSCC crude incidence rates in 2020 were equal to crude incidence rates in 2019 (cSCC-CIRR 1.00 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.94-1.06). In 2021, the pooled result indicated a non-significant 8% increase in cSCC crude incidence rates, compared with 2019 (cSCC-CIRR 1.08 (95% CI 0.98-1.19). Significant reductions were reported in NMSC incidence across all meta-analyses in 2020 and 2021 compared with 2019. Heterogeneity was observed across most pooled estimates (I 2>75%). There was a lack of high quality data on cSCC incidence rates recorded during the pandemic outside of Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in no significant changes in cSCC incidence across Europe. By contrast, NMSC incidence fell across Europe following the pandemic. Significant reductions in pooled NMSC incidence rates may reflect a delay in basal cell carcinoma presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Although annual incidence rates for cSCC were not affected by the pandemic, delays in treatment may still have occurred, which may result in poorer outcomes yet to be fully understood.

Mucosal Cancers Arising in Potentially Malignant Lesions of the Oral Mucosa Are Marjolin Ulcers: New Insights Into Old Concepts.

Several disparate mucocutaneous diseases present oral mucosal lesions that have been classically labeled as "pre-cancerous", "pre-malignant", or "potentially malignant". These include oral lichen planus, dyskeratosis congenita, tertiary syphilitic glossitis chronic graft-versus-host-disease, and oral discoid lupus erythematosus. There is much confusion in literature regarding the real malignant potential of these oral lesions in relation to the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma. We tried to unify the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma in some oral mucosal diseases into the classic concept of "Marjolin ulcer". We analyzed the most relevant published evidence of the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma arising in oral lichen planus, dyskeratosis congenita, tertiary syphilitic glossitis chronic graft-versus-host-disease, and oral discoid lupus erythematosus, and tried to establish a logical link between them. Reported cases of squamous cell carcinoma occurring in oral lesions of these diseases seem to appear in old standing, scarring lesions. Oral lichen planus, dyskeratosis congenita, tertiary syphilitic glossitis, chronic graft-versushost-disease, and oral discoid lupus erythematosus are not "pre-malignant diseases", their long-lasting mucosal scars are prone to the development of squamous cell carcinomas. In this sense, this tumor can be considered a mucosal type of Marjolin ulcer.

Neural landscape is associated with functional outcomes in irradiated patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

The incidence of human papilloma virus-mediated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has increased over the past 40 years, particularly among young individuals with a favorable prognosis; however, current therapy often leads to unfortunate side effects, such as dysphagia. Despite the emphasis on dysphagia in previous studies, there is an important research gap in understanding the correlation between neuronal changes and patient-reported and functional outcomes in patients with OPSCC. To address this issue, we examined pathologic tissue samples from patients with OPSCC using multiplex immunofluorescence staining and machine learning to correlate tumor-associated neuronal changes with prospectively collected patient-reported and functional outcomes. We found that tumor enrichment of adrenergic (TH+) and CGRP+ sensory-afferent nerves correlated with poorer swallowing outcomes. Functional electromyography recordings showed correlations between growing (GAP43+) and immature cholinergic (ChAT+DCX+) nerves and denervation patterns in survivors of OPSCC. A murine model of radiation-induced dysphagia further confirmed that immature cholinergic and CGRP+ nerves were correlated with impaired swallowing. Preclinical interventional studies also supported the independent contributions of CGRP+ and cholinergic (ChAT+) nerves to dysphagia in treated mouse models of OPSCC. Our results suggest that CGRP+ and ChAT+ neuronal signaling play distinct roles in tumor- and radiation-induced dysphagia in OPSCC and offer a comprehensive dataset on the neural landscape of OPSCC. These insights may guide early interventions for swallow preservation and the repurposing of neurology-related drugs, such as CGRP blockers, in clinical oncology and survivorship.

Interim Phase II Results Using Panitumumab-IRDye800CW during Transoral Robotic Surgery in Patients with Oropharyngeal Cancer.

The incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has continually increased during the past several decades. Using transoral robotic surgery (TORS) significantly improves functional outcomes relative to open surgery for OPSCC. However, TORS limits tactile feedback, which is often the most important element of cancer surgery. Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) strategies to aid surgeon assessment of malignancy for resection are in various phases of clinical research but exhibit the greatest potential impact for improving patient care when the surgeon receives limited tactile feedback, such as during TORS. Here, we assessed the feasibility of intraoperative fluorescence imaging using panitumumab-IRDye800CW (PAN800) during TORS in patients with OPSCC. Twelve consecutive patients with OPSCC were enrolled as part of a nonrandomized, prospective, phase II FGS clinical trial using PAN800. TORS was performed with an integrated robot camera for surgeon assessment of fluorescence. Intraoperative and ex vivo fluorescence signals in tumors and normal tissue were quantified and correlated with histopathology. Intraoperative robot fluorescence views delineated OPSCC from normal tissue throughout the TORS procedure (10.7 mean tumor-to-background ratio), including in tumors with low expression of the molecular target. Tumor-specific fluorescence was consistent with surgeon-defined tumor borders requiring resection. Intraoperative robot fluorescence imaging revealed an OPSCC fragment initially overlooked during TORS based on brightfield views, further substantiating the clinical benefit of this FGS approach. The results from this patient with OPSCC cohort support further clinical assessment of FGS during TORS to aid resection of solid tumors.

Evaluation of Triglyceride-Glucose Index Elevation as a Biomarker and Risk Factor in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Insulin resistance is associated with increased levels of IGF-1. IGF-1 has been shown to increase the risk of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) is a marker of insulin resistance. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Retrospective cohort study. Two tertiary care academic hospitals. The study included 53 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (Group 1) and 48 healthy volunteers (Group 2). Laryngeal cancer patients were divided into two groups according to their stage. Stages I and II were named Group 1A, and Stages III and IV were called Group 1B. The TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting Triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting plasma glucose (mg/dL)/2]. The effect of the TyG index on laryngeal cancer was investigated on the parameters of sex, age, body mass index, and stage of the disease. There were no significant differences in age, sex, and BMI between the groups. The TyG index of group 1 (4.75 ± 0.33) was significantly higher than that of group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). The TyG index value of group 1B (4.84 ± 0.31) was significantly higher than both group 1A (4.61 ± 0.32) and group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). There was no significant difference between the TyG index values of group 1A (4.61 ± 0.32) and group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). The TyG index may be a promising laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma biomarker. People with a higher TyG index may have a higher incidence of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and a higher risk of progression.

CD73 Is an Immunometabolic Biomarker of Poor Prognosis in Patients With Primary Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Hematologic Malignancy.

Impaired immunity may drive the increased incidence and aggression of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) in patients with hematologic malignancy; however, precise mechanisms and prognostic biomarkers remain undefined. CD73 maintains elevated immunosuppressive adenosine levels and is associated with poor prognosis in several tumor microenvironments. Identify poor outcome biomarkers in patients with cSCC and hematologic malignancy. Differentially expressed genes in tumors from patients with hematologic malignancy experiencing good (n = 8) versus poor (n = 7) outcomes were identified by NanoString analysis. Results were validated at the protein level using CD73 immunohistochemistry in cSCC patients with (n = 38) and without (n = 29) hematologic malignancy. Forty-eight genes were differentially expressed in tumors from patients with hematologic malignancy experiencing good versus poor outcomes. CD73 gene expression was >2-fold higher in patients with poor versus good outcomes or normal skin. Significantly increased CD73 protein levels were observed in cSCC tumors with poor versus good outcomes from patients with hematologic malignancies (p < .01), whereas no differences were noted in tumors with poor versus good outcomes from patients without hematologic malignancies (p = .49). CD73 is highly expressed in poor prognosis cSCC from patients with hematologic malignancy and may represent a useful biomarker and potential therapeutic target.

LRG1 and SDR16C5 protein expressions differ according to HPV status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

The increasing incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is primarily due to human papillomavirus, and understanding the tumor biology caused by the virus is crucial. Our goal was to investigate the proteins present in the serum of patients with OPSCC, which were not previously studied in OPSCC tissue. We examined the difference in expression of these proteins between HPV-positive and -negative tumors and their correlation with clinicopathological parameters and patient survival. The study included 157 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples and clinicopathological data. Based on the protein levels in the sera of OPSCC patients, we selected 12 proteins and studied their expression in HPV-negative and HPV-positive OPSCC cell lines. LRG1, SDR16C5, PIP4K2C and MVD proteins were selected for immunohistochemical analysis in HPV-positive and -negative OPSCC tissue samples. These protein´s expression levels were compared with clinicopathological parameters and patient survival to investigate their clinical relevance. LRG1 expression was strong in HPV-negative whereas SDR16C5 expression was strong in HPV-positive tumors. Correlation was observed between LRG1, SDR16C5, and PIP4K2C expression and patient survival. High expression of PIP4K2C was found to be an independent prognostic factor for overall survival and expression correlated with HPV-positive tumor status. The data suggest the possible role of LRG1, SDR16C5 and PIP4K2C in OPSCC biology.

Circ_0004771 regulates malignant biological behaviors and has clinical significance in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

The incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is increasing, and more effective treatment protocols must rapidly be developed to prevent the death of patients and ensure favorable outcomes. CircRNAs are a unique class of noncoding ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules unaffected by RNA exonucleases. CircRNAs have more stable expression than linear RNAs and are not readily degraded; therefore, they are the newest focus of RNA research. Here, we analyze the mechanism of hsa_circ_0004771 (circ_0004771) in OSCC to provide a clinical reference. Circ_0004771 expression was measured in peripheral blood, cancerous tissues and adjacent tissues of OSCC patients. Patients were followed up for 3 years. The diagnostic value of circ_0004771 for OSCC occurrence, prognosis, recurrence and survival was analyzed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. OSCC cells were lentivirally transduced with a circ_0004771-silencing or an empty vector to evaluate alterations in cell growth, invasion, and apoptosis. Apoptosis-related and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related protein expression was quantified. BALB/c nude mice were used for tumorigenesis experiments to evaluate tumor growth in vivo after silencing circ_0004771. Circ_0004771 expression was higher in peripheral blood and cancerous tissue of OSCC patients than in control peripheral blood and paracancerous tissue, respectively, exhibiting excellent predictive value for OSCC occurrence, prognosis, recurrence and survival. Silencing circ_0004771 decreased the growth, invasiveness, and EMT capacity and increased the apoptosis of OCC cells. In mice implanted with OSCC cells transduced with the circ_0004771-silencing lentiviral vector, the tumor growth capacity was obviously decreased. Silencing circ_0004771 inhibits the malignant growth of OSCC.

Incidence and geographic differences in keratinocyte carcinoma and Bowen's disease in office‐based dermatological practice between 2013 and 2022: A nationwide Danish registry‐based study

AbstractBackgroundRates of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) across Europe are impacted by population demographics and geography. Regional differences in KC occurrence exist, but few European studies investigate incidences of specific subtypes in the secondary healthcare sector on a national level.ObjectivesTo determine geographical differences in incidence rate and lifetime risk of KC subtypes across Denmark, including nodular and superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and the KC precursor, Bowen's disease (BD), identified in office‐based dermatological practice.MethodsBased on a nationwide registry (The Danish Skin Cancer Registry), all patients in Denmark's five regions with a histologically‐ or clinically verified KC or BD registered in a state‐funded office‐based dermatology practice between 2013 and 2022 were included. Trends in national‐ and region‐specific age and sex standardised tumour incidence rates (STIR) were calculated. Further, national lifetime risk of each tumour subtype was estimated.ResultsBetween 2013 and 2022, the combined STIR for KC/BD rose 172% nationally from 180 to 489 per 100,000 person‐years (PY). This increase reflected rising rates of nodular BCC, SCC, and BD, while superficial BCC incidence was relatively stable. Regional differences in STIR for combined KC/BD were observed, with the Capital Region and North Jutland generally demonstrating higher rates than Zealand, Southern‐ and Central Denmark (e.g., North Jutland vs. Southern Denmark: 714 vs. 405/100,000PY). While the estimated lifetime risk of developing at least one KC or BD tumour was 21.8%, risk varied with tumour subtype, resulting in subtype‐specific risks of 16.4%, 5.1%, 1.9% and 1.3% for nodular BCC, superficial BCC, SCC, and BD, respectively.ConclusionsIn Denmark's secondary dermatological care sector, incidence of nodular BCC, SCC and BD continues to rise with an overall lifetime risk nearing 22%. While KC incidence is increasing in Denmark, the study detected differences in geographical trends and rate increases of specific tumour subtypes.

Future patterns in burden and incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus in the United States, 2001-2035.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) incidence has been rising in the United States, particularly among older adults (≥65 years). We estimated the impact of this rise on future burden (through 2035) using age-period-cohort modeling. The SCCA burden (cases/year) is expected to rise, reaching approximately 2700 among men and approximately 7000 among women in 2031-2035 (burden during 2016-2020 among men and women was approximately 2150 and approximately 4600), with most cases 65 years of age or older (61% in men and 70% in women in 2031-2035; from 40% and 46% in 2016-2020). SCCA incidence (per 100 000) is projected to rise among older men aged 65-74, 75-84, and 85 years or older (5.0, 4.9, and 4.3 in 2031-2035 vs 3.7, 3.8, and 3.4 in 2016-2020, respectively) and women (11.2, 12.6, and 8.0 in 2031-2035 vs 8.2, 6.8, and 5.2 in 2016-2020, respectively). The projected rise in SCCA burden among older adults is troubling and highlights the importance of improving early detection and clinical care.

Racial/ethnic differences in incidence of squamous cell carcinoma in California.

11139 Background: Squamous cell lung carcinoma is strongly associated with a history of smoking. Typically, no actionable mutations are found, and treatment options are more limited. It is not known if race has any impact on the incidence of squamous cell cancers, especially for Asian ethnicities since most studies combine multiple Asian populations in an Asian/Pacific Islander (API) category. The purpose of this study was to compare the odds of squamous cell carcinoma versus adenocarcinoma in Hispanic, American Indian, Middle Eastern, and 7 Asian ethnicities when compared with both Black and White men and women. Methods: We accessed 211,987 cases of invasive lung cancer with either squamous cell or adenocarcinoma from the California Cancer Registry 2000-2020. Race was categorized as White, African American/Black, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Southeast Asian (SEA), Pacific Islander, or Asian Indian. Separate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the odds of squamous cell versus adenocarcinoma for each race/ethnicity using White and Black as the reference categories. Analyses were conducted separately for males and females and adjusted for age, smoking status, socioeconomic status, marital status, and Charlson Comorbidity Score. Odds Ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed. Results: When compared with White men, American Indian men had increased odds (OR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.88) and Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino, SEA men had decreased odds of squamous cell carcinoma. Japanese women had increased odds (OR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.15, 2.07) while Black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Filipino, and SEA women had decreased odds of squamous cell carcinoma when compared with White women. When compared with Black men, White men, (OR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.24) American Indian, (OR: 1.56; 95% CI: 1.13, 2.13) and Korean (OR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.73) men had increased odds and Chinese, Filipino, and SEA men had decreased odds of squamous cell carcinoma. White, (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.28) Japanese, (OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.28, 2.39) and Korean (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.09, 2.42) women had increased odds and Southeast Asians had decreased odds when compared with Black women. Conclusions: Some Asian ethnicities have a higher risk for squamous cell lung cancer than both Black and White men and women even after adjusting for smoking. This is not apparent when the Asian ethnicities are classified as API. Examining individual Asian ethnicities is important since they have little to no shared genetic or cultural variables and are grouped together for convenience rather than any scientifically plausible reason.
