Extracellular Polymeric Substances from Bacillus subtilis Associated with Minerals Modify the Extent and Rate of Heavy Metal Sorption

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are an important source of organic matter in soil. Once released by microorganisms, a portion may be sorbed to mineral surfaces, thereby altering the mineral̀s ability to immobilize heavy metals. EPS from Bacillus subtilis were reacted with Ca-saturated bentonite and ferrihydrite in 0.01 M KCl at pH 5.0 to follow the preferential uptake of EPS-C, -N, and -P. The sorption kinetics of Pb(2+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+) to the resulting EPS-mineral composites was studied in single and binary metal batch experiments ([metal](total) = 50 μM, pH 5.0). Bentonite sorbed much more EPS-C (18.5 mg g(-1)) than ferrihydrite (7.9 mg g(-1)). During sorption, EPS were chemically and size fractionated with bentonite favoring the uptake of low-molecular weight components and EPS-N, and ferrihydrite selectively retaining high-molecular weight and P-rich components. Surface area and pore size measurements by N(2) gas adsorption at 77 K indicated that EPS altered the structure of mineral-EPS associations by inducing partial disaggregation of bentonite and aggregation of ferrihydrite. Whereas mineral-bound EPS increased the extent and rate of Pb(2+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+) sorption for bentonite, either no effect or a decrease in metal uptake was observed for ferrihydrite. The extent of sorption always followed the order Pb(2+) > Cu(2+) > Zn(2+), which also prevailed in binary Pb(2+)/Cu(2+) systems. In consequence, sorption of EPS to different minerals may have contrasting consequences for the immobilization of heavy metals in natural environments by inducing mineral-specific alterations of the pore size distribution and, thus, of available sorption sites.

Sea ice microbial production supports Ross Sea benthic communities: influence of a small but stable subsidy

Diversity in guilds of primary producers enhances temporal stability in provision of organic matter to consumers. In the Antarctic ecosystem, where temporal variability in phytoplankton production is high, sea ice contains a diatom and microbial community (SIMCO) that represents a pool of organic matter that is seasonally more consistent, although of relatively small magnitude. The fate of organic material produced by SIMCO in Antarctica is largely unknown but may represent an important link between sea ice dynamics and secondary production in nearshore food webs. We used whole tissue and compound-specific stable isotope analysis of consumers to test whether the sea ice microbial community is an important source of organic matter supporting nearshore communities in the Ross Sea. We found distinct gradients in delta13C and delta15N of SIMCO corresponding to differences in inorganic carbon and nitrogen acquisition among sites with different sea ice extent and persistence. Mass balance analysis of a suite of consumers demonstrated large fluxes of SIMCO into the nearshore food web, ranging from 5% to 100% of organic matter supplied to benthic species, and 0-10% of organic matter to upper water column or pelagic inhabitants. A delta13C analysis of nine fatty acids including two key biomarkers for diatoms, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5omega3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6omega3), confirmed these patterns. We observed clear patterns in delta13C of fatty acids that are enriched in 13C for species that acquire a large fraction of their nutrition from SIMCO. These data demonstrate the key role of SIMCO in ecosystem functioning in Antarctica and strong linkages between sea ice extent and nearshore secondary productivity. While SIMCO provides a stabilizing subsidy of organic matter, changes to sea ice coverage associated with climate change would directly affect secondary production and stability of benthic food webs in Antarctica.

Residual Glycerol from Biodiesel Manufacturing, Waste or Potential Source of Bioenergy: A Review

This review provides a summary of the research conducted on the use of crude glycerol, the major byproduct of the biodiesel industry, as substrate for anaerobic co-digestion and production of biogas. In general, for every 100 kg biodiesel produced, approximately 10 kg crude glycerol is generated. Because this glycerol is expensive to purify for use in food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic industries, biodiesel producers must seek alternative methods for its disposal. Several studies have demonstrated that the use of crude glycerol as a C source for fermentation and biogas generation is a promising alternative use for this waste material. The high C content of glycerol increases the C:N ratio in the mixture, avoiding the inhibition of the process by the excess of N increasing methane production of digesters by 50 to 200%. Anaerobic codigestion of glycerol and a variety of residual biomasses may be a good integrated solution for managing these wastes and simultaneously producing a source of bioenergy in an environmentally friendly way. On the other hand, after anaerobic treatment of glycerol, an organic matter-rich solid waste is generated (digestate). The incorporation of digestates from glycerol co-digestion to soils constitutes an important source of organic matter and nutrients for plants. However, the potential of digestates as an organic soil amendment has not been sufficiently studied. The utilization of glycerol as a potential source of energy, rather than as a waste, seems to be a convenient way of lowering the costs of biodiesel production and making this emerging industry more competitive.

Comparison of Dissolved Organic Carbon Bioavailability from Native and Invasive Vegetation along a Hawaiian River

Riparian litter fall is an important source of organic matter to rivers and accounts for a large fraction of their dissolved organic carbon (DOC) load. DOC is metabolically important in rivers, and therefore changes in riparian vegetation species composition should affect riverine DOC bioavailability. Worldwide, invasive vegetation composes a large percentage of riparian vegetation. In Hawai'i, riparian vegetation changes from native to invasive species with decreasing elevation. To assess how changes in riparian vegetation affect riverine DOC dynamics, we compared DOC bioavailability from native (Acacia koa and Metrosideros polymorpha) and invasive (Falcataria moluccana and Psidium cattleianum) riparian trees to freshwater and estuarine bacteria from the Wailuku River on Hawai'i Island through dark bioassays. DOC bioavailabilities in riverine and estuarine waters were similar among all riparian vegetation types. In contrast, vegetation-derived DOC was more bioavailable (52% ± 4%) than the riverine and estuarine DOC (14% ± 3%). Combining DOC bioavailability and leaf litter input data from our native and invaded riparian sites suggests that a shift in leaf litter inputs from native to invasive species may increase the amount of bioavailable DOC entering Hawaiian rivers and streams. This DOC input has the potential to impact the metabolism and food webs of downstream ecosystems.

Evidence for the production of marine fluorescent dissolved organic matter in coastal environments and a possible mechanism for formation and dispersion

A positive linear relationship between salinity and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) was observed on several occasions along the West Florida shelf at salinities greater than 36.5. This represents a departure from the typical inverse relationship between FDOM and salinity observed in most coastal regions caused by the mixing of riverine FDOM with clear oceanic water. Three‐dimensional excitation‐emission matrices showed that the high‐salinity, high‐FDOM water had blue‐shifted spectra characteristic of autochthonous, marine FDOM, with peak M concentrations eight times higher than previously reported for seawater. The blue‐shifted fluorescence endmember at high salinity was clearly distinguishable from a photobleached FDOM endmember. A high‐resolution time series collected in a shallow embayment with significant Gulf of Mexico influence supplemented cruise data and provided a possible mechanism for the formation of high‐salinity, high‐FDOM water. During a dry period of spring tides, high‐salinity, high‐FDOM water was exported at ebb tide and lower‐salinity, low‐FDOM water was imported during flood tide. During neap tide, FDOM and salinity demonstrated no evidence of either export or dilution from incoming seawater. After a significant rain event, a more typical inverse relationship between salinity and FDOM was observed. Production of FDOM‐rich water in shallow embayments has not been observed previously. This is likely an important source of organic matter and dispersion of this material may explain observations of a high‐salinity, high‐FDOM water in adjacent coastal regions.

Placement effects on rice residue decomposition and nutrient dynamics on two soil types during wheat cropping in rice–wheat system in northwestern India

Crop residues are important sources of organic matter and plant nutrients and known to affect soil quality. Tillage affects residue decomposition and nutrient cycling processes. A 2 year field study was aimed to investigate the decomposition and nutrient dynamics from surface-placed and incorporated rice (Oryza sativa L.) residue on two soil types using the nylon mesh bag technique over wheat cropping cycle in rice–wheat system in northwestern India. A single-pool first-order exponential decay function showed R2 larger than 0.9. Over the wheat growing cycle about 20% of buried rice residue and 50% of surface-placed residue remained undecomposed. Nitrogen exponential decay models were significant at P 80% was released by 40 days (680 DGD).

Concentration-dependent Stable Isotope Analysis of Consumers in the Upper Reaches of a Freshwater-dominated Estuary: Apalachicola Bay, FL, USA

The goals of this study were to quantify organic matter source utilization by consumers in the freshwater-dominated region (East Bay) of a high river flow estuary and compare the results to consumers in marine-influenced sites of the same estuary to understand how organic matter utilization by consumers may be changing along the salinity gradient. We used the results from these evaluations to establish the baseline against which we isotopically determined trophic level for consumers in East Bay. Average isotope values for consumers sampled in East Bay ranged from −20.1‰ to −24.8‰ for carbon and from 8.9‰ to 14.3‰ for sulfur. These values were well-constrained by the four identified sources: plankton, benthic organic matter, macroalgae, and terrestrial detritus. Application of a concentration-corrected mixing model resulted in contributions of benthic production and detrital sources (averaged over the food web) to East Bay consumers of 41% and 33%, respectively, with the remainder made up of plankton and benthic macroalage. While benthic organic matter was an important organic matter source for consumers at both sites, we found that the influence of terrestrial detritus varied significantly throughout the bay. Terrestrial detritus contributed only 18% of average total organic matter in organisms inhabiting marine-influenced sites. Although terrestrial detritus did contribute to all consumers examined, most fish species in Apalachicola Bay reflect a greater reliance on autochthonous sources. Our results suggest that, while terrestrial detritus does appear to be a major contributor to commercially important shellfish species (most notably oysters and penaeid shrimp), it is not the major source fueling the diversity of secondary production in Apalachicola Bay. Thus, production in Apalachicola Bay is highly dependent on riverine influx in two ways: (1) economically important bivalves and crustaceans are being fueled by terrestrial organic matter supplied by river flooding and (2) secondary and above consumer fish species are supported by in situ production which, in turn, is reliant on nutrients supplied by the Apalachicola River. These findings are significant in light of decisions regarding water usage and river flow restrictions in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint drainage basin. The results of this study confirm that in situ estuarine organic matter is the dominant source supporting secondary production in this river-dominated estuary.

Across margin export of organic matter by cascading events traced by stable isotopes, northwestern Mediterranean Sea

We present a 1‐yr (2005‐2006) record of organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents and their isotopic ratios (Δ13COC and Δ15N) in sinking particles from the western Gulf of Lions. Maximum OC and TN fluxes recorded in January 2006 and March‐April 2006 were associated with negative near‐bottom temperature anomalies. This reveals large inputs of resuspended organic matter from the shelf basinwards to depths ≫1500 m by dense shelf‐water cascading. The first pulse of organic matter had low Δ13COC (‐25.5‰) and N:C (0.08) and high Δ15N (6.6‰) values, indicative of the arrival of organic matter of terrestrial origin. In contrast, the second pulse had high Δ13COC (‐21.9‰) and N:C (0.15) and extremely low Δ15N (0.0‰) values, indicative of the transfer of organic matter with higher marine contribution. Though downslope export of organic matter from the adjacent shelf predominated, particles escaping from surface waters remained an important source of organic matter during low‐energy and low‐flux periods and especially during summer conditions, with significant contribution of N2 fixation to organic matter export. Overall, our results suggest the export of organic matter from different sources to the deep Mediterranean basin, which in turn might alter within a couple of months the quality of the sedimentary organic matter deposited on the sea floor and thus the dynamics of the deep ecosystems.

Production of Total Potentially Soluble Organic C, N, and P Across an Ecosystem Chronosequence: Root versus Leaf Litter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays several important roles in forest ecosystem development, undergoing chemical, physical and/or biological reactions that affect ecosystem nutrient retention. Very few studies have focused on gross rates of DOM production, and we know of no study that has directly measured DOM production from root litter. Our objectives were to quantify major sources of total potentially water-soluble organic matter (DOMtps) production, with an emphasis on production from root litter, to quantify and compare total potentially soluble organic C, N, and P (DOCtps, DONtps, and DOPtps) production, and to quantify changes in their production during forest primary succession and ecosystem development at the Mt. Shasta Mudflows ecosystem chronosequence. To do so, we exhaustively extracted freshly senesced root and leaf and other aboveground litter for DOCtps, DONtps, and DOPtps by vegetation category, and we calculated DOMtps production (g m−2 y−1) at the ecosystem level using data for annual production of fine root and aboveground litter. DOM production from throughfall was calculated by measuring throughfall volume and concentration over 2 years. Results showed that DOMtps production from root litter was a very important source of DOMtps in the Mount Shasta mudflow ecosystems, in some cases comparable to production from leaf litter for DONtps and larger than production from leaf litter for DOPtps. Total DOCtps and DONtps production from all sources increased early in succession from the 77- to the 255-year-old ecosystem. However, total DOPtps production across the ecosystem chronosequence showed a unique pattern. Generally, the relative importance of root litter for total fine detrital DOCtps and DONtps production increased significantly during ecosystem development. Furthermore, DOCtps and DONtps production were predominantly driven by changes in biomass production during ecosystem development, whereas changes in litter solubility due to changes in species composition had a smaller effect. We suggest that DOMtps production from root litter may be an important source of organic matter for the accumulation of SOM during forest ecosystem development.

Organic matter sources in an enclosed coastal inlet assessed using lipid biomarkers and stable isotopes

The sources of organic matter (OM) in surface sediments from Wilson Inlet, an enclosed and seasonally barred inlet in Western Australia, have been determined using a combination of lipid biomarkers (including fatty acids, sterols, phytol, long chain alcohols, alkyl diols, tetrahymanol and C 32 hopanol) and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data for bulk OM and δ 13C data for n-alkanols. The organic composition of sediments from the inflowing rivers was used as a proxy for terrestrial inputs of higher plant OM, since these sediments contained only small amounts of carbon from microalgae (mostly diatoms), bacteria and cyanobacteria. The relative proportions of “marine” and “terrestrial” OM in the sediments could be estimated using the stable carbon isotope signature of the bulk organic carbon. The sediments from Wilson Inlet showed similar lipid compositions and isotope values, and the sterol and fatty acid distributions showed the complexity typical of marine ecosystems. Relative contributions from algal (phytoplankton and microphytobenthos), bacterial, terrestrial plants and seagrass sources were estimated using biomarker/organic carbon ratios in the different source terms. Microalgae and bacteria are the most important source of OM within the inlet (over 80% in most sediments) and most of the algal material originates from the water column, except in sandy shallow sediments at the eastern end of the inlet where a contribution from microphytobenthos can be discerned. The distributions, abundances and δ 13C isotope values of long chain n-alkanols proved to be useful in quantifying the contributions from terrestrial plants and the seagrass Ruppia megacarpa. The latter is a relatively small contributor (< 10%) to the OM in the sediments, despite the presence of large seagrass beds around the edges of the inlet and the presumed importance of seagrass as a source of carbon in the foodwebs of the inlet. Nonetheless, seagrass is a significant contributor of the “higher plant” marker 24-ethylcholesterol (sitosterol) in the sediments.

Middle to late Holocene fluctuations of C 3 and C 4 vegetation in a Northern New England Salt Marsh, Sprague Marsh, Phippsburg Maine

A 3.1 m sediment core was analyzed for stable carbon isotope composition of organic matter and higher plant leaf wax (HPLW) lipid biomarkers to determine Holocene shifts in C 3 (higher high marsh) and C 4 (low and/or high marsh) plant deposition at the Sprague River Salt Marsh, Phippsburg, Maine. The carbon isotope composition of the bulk sediment and the HPLW parallel each other throughout most of the core, suggesting that terrestrial plants are an important source of organic matter to the sediments, and diagenetic alteration of the bulk sediments is minimal. The current salt marsh began to form 2500 cal yr BP. Low and/or high C 4 marsh plants dominated deposition at 2000 cal yr BP, 700 cal yr BP, and for the last 200 cal yr BP. Expansion of higher high marsh C 3 plants occurred at 1300 and 600 cal yr BP. These major vegetation shifts result from a combination of changes in relative sea-level rise and sediment accumulation rates. Average annual carbon sequestration rates for the last 2500 years approximate 40 g C yr −1 m −2, and are in strong agreement with other values published for the Gulf of Maine. Given that Maine salt marshes cover an area of ∼79 km 2, they represent an important component of the terrestrial carbon sink. More detailed isotopic and age records from a network of sediment cores at Sprague Marsh are needed to truly evaluate the long term changes in salt marsh plant communities and the impact of more recent human activity, including global warming, on salt marsh vegetation.

Popular myths around soil fertility management in sub-Saharan Africa

The aim of this paper is to demystify some of the popular myths related to tropical soil fertility management that have gained hold in the development community and are often being promulgated by NGO's and development agencies in the tropics. Negative nutrient balances at farm scale or at larger scales are very often presented as proof that soil fertility is at stake in SSA. However, nutrient balances at plot and farm section scale are not always negative. In areas with large nutrient stocks, short-term nutrient mining is fully acceptable. Fertilizer use continues to face considerable controversy in SSA. In this paper, we demonstrate that fertilizers rarely damage the soil; that fertilizers are being used in SSA, often with favourable value-to-cost ratios; and that fertilizers do not cause eutrophication in SSA. Rock phosphates are abundantly present in SSA but most are poorly soluble. Adding these phosphates to compost heaps does not enhance the short-term availability of their P. Although organic inputs are essential soil amendments besides fertilizer, organic inputs alone cannot sustain crop production due to limitations in their quality and availability. Organic resources can also potentially stimulate harmful pests and diseases. Legumes are often advocated as important sources of organic matter but not all legumes fix nitrogen, require inoculation, or are a source of free nitrogen, as even green manures require land and labour. Certain grain legumes with high N harvest indices do not improve soil fertility, but remove net amounts of N from the soil. These myths need correction if we are to harness the role of science in the overall goal of assisting farmers to address the acute problems of poor soil fertility for smallholder farmers in SSA.

Knowing the properties of these used wastes increases the rate of achievement in agricultural production. These plant origin wastes are seen as an alternative of peat that is used in large amounts in the world and our country and whose sources are diminishing gradually in the world, and the possibilities of their usage in place of peat are searched. In this review, it is tried to evaluate the properties of plant harvest and agricultural industry wastes that are burnt and caused environmental pollution both in the world and our country, and the usage possibilities in agriculture and the usage chance of them in stead of peat.

Effects of cattle manure on erosion rates and runoff water pollution by faecal coliforms

The large quantities of slurry and manure that are produced annually in many areas in which cattle are raised could be an important source of organic matter and nutrients for agriculture. However, the benefits of waste recycling may be partially offset by the risk of water pollution associated with runoff from the fields to which slurry or manure has been applied. In this paper, the effects of cattle manure application on soil erosion rates and runoff and on surface water pollution by faecal coliforms are analysed. Rainfall simulations at a rate of 70 mm h −1 were conducted in a sandy loam soil packed into soil flumes (2.5 m long×1 m wide) at a bulk density of 1400 kg m −3, with and without cattle slurry manure applied on the surface. For each simulation, sediment and runoff rates were analysed and in those simulations with applied slurry, presumptive faecal coliform (PFC) concentrations in the runoff were evaluated. The application of slurry on the soil surface appeared to have a protective effect on the soils, reducing soil detachment by up to 70% but increasing runoff volume by up to 30%. This practice implies an important source of pollution for surface waters especially if rainfall takes place within a short period after application. The concentrations of micro-organisms (presumptive faecal coliforms (PFCs)) found in water runoff ranged from 1.9×10 4 to 1.1×10 6 PFC 100 mL −1, depending on the initial concentration in the slurry, and they were particularly high during the first phases of the rainfall event. The result indicates a strong relationship between the faecal coliforms transported by runoff and the organic matter in the sediment.

Experimental studies of the relative effects of leaf litter from four hardwood trees on protozoan community productivity

Leaf litter is an important source of organic matter as nutrients for aquatic and terrestrial microbial communities. Biogenic decomposition of leaf litter contributes substantially to atmospheric CO2, possibly producing global warming, and comprises an important part of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Small‐scale variability in terrestrial protozoan communities may be attributed to localized variations in leaf matter. This study examined the effect of aqueous leaf extracts from four trees (beech, maple, red oak, and white oak) on the abundance and diversity of protozoa in laboratory aquatic and soil cultures. Beech leaf extract was the most productive followed in the descending order by white oak, red oak, and maple in both aquatic and soil microcosm cultures. Dilution experiments indicated that concentration‐related inhibitory substance(s) in the maple and red oak leaves contribute to lower productivity. Removal of tannins by treatment with activated charcoal (Norit®) improved productivity especially for red oak leaf extracts, suggesting that tannins may contribute to the inhibition of protozoan standing stock. To determine if the lower productivity was mainly due to the inhibition of protozoan excystment, aliquots of thoroughly dried soil were inoculated into maple and red oak leaf extracts. A comparable growth of protozoa occurred in these treatments as in aliquots from moist soil indicating that inhibition of excystment is not a likely explanation for reduced productivity of the protozoan communities.

Bacterial community composition in biofilms on leaves in a northeastern Ohio stream

Litterfall is often an important source of organic matter in streams, and biofilms play an essential role in the decomposition and cycling of organic matter in leaves. Biofilms form rapidly on the surfaces of decomposing leaves, but little is known about the taxonomic composition of the bacterial community in leaf-surface biofilms. In addition, it is not known if bacteria in the biofilm colonize leaves from stream water, or if the biofilm forms from growth of bacteria already on the leaf surface. The purposes of our study were to examine the contribution of major taxa of freshwater bacteria to maple-leaf biofilms and to determine if these taxa were present in the biofilm because of colonization from the stream water. Exposed and dialysis-bag-enclosed maple leaves were incubated in a stream in northeastern Ohio during autumn 1998 and 1999. Leaves were collected, the biofilm was removed, and bacteria were counted using 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with probes targeted to Domain Bacteria and to the α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria. DAPI-stained cells and Bacteria were more abundant in 1999 than 1998. Differences in abundance between years may have been related to water velocity, which was much lower in 1999 than 1998. The α-Proteobacteria were the most abundant group in the biofilm (up to 40% of Domain Bacteria), whereas the γ-Proteobacteria were the least abundant (generally <10%). Percentages of β-Proteobacteria were much greater in 1999 than 1998 (26% and 15%, respectively). Abundances of biofilm α- and β-Proteobacteria were much greater on exposed leaves than on dialysis-bag-enclosed leaves, suggesting that large numbers of cells may colonize leaf surfaces from stream water. In conclusion, Proteobacteria made up most bacteria on the surface of decomposing maple leaves. Erosion of cells from the biofilm and colonization from stream water may have been important factors controlling biofilm development.

Modelling organic matter dynamics in headwater streams of south-western British Columbia, Canada

A mass-balance model was developed to simulate organic matter (OM) dynamics in headwater stream ecosystems of south-western British Columbia, Canada. Empirical data from two streams were used to structure and test a mass-balance model of the riparian–stream system. The model was driven by data on inputs, outputs, processing rates, discharge and water temperature. Statistical sub-models were derived for different processes (e.g. decomposition rates and periphyton growth). Inputs and outputs of OM were modelled on the basis of a series of assumptions of system properties, such as temperature and hydrological regimes. Major uncertainties identified through Monte-Carlo simulations of model predictions and variables important in controlling OM dynamics in these streams were dissolved OM (DOM) import and export, stream area and litterfall import. DOM was quantitatively the most important source of OM, accounting for 80% of total export of OM, followed by export of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) at 15%. Different scenarios of logging and temperature regimes on the system were simulated to predict how these factors would affect standing stock of OM in the stream. When inputs of riparian litterfall were simulated to mirror reductions predicted from forest harvesting in the riparian area particulate OM (POM) standing stock was reduced by almost 80%. In comparison, a 3 °C increase in water temperature resulted in only a 20% reduction of POM standing stock due to enhanced mineralisation.

Organic matter characterization and fate in the sub-arctic Norwegian fjords during the late spring/summer period

The organic matter (OM) pool has been studied in two sub-arctic north Norwegian fjords, Balsfjord and Ullsfjord, in July 2001 and June 2003. Besides general OM parameters such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON), the distribution of specific compounds such as folic acid and surface active substances (SAS) was followed. The results are supported with data of salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll a (Chl a). This approach allowed assessment of the fate of the OM pool, and its distinct vertical, spatial, and seasonal variations. Fjord waters could be vertically divided into two layers: the upper mixed layer (UML), until 40 m depth, and the deep aphotic layer. Spatial variability between the two fjords is a consequence of different influences of shelf waters on the fjords. Significant enrichment of POC and PON concentrations (3–5 times), as well as those of particulate SAS and folic acid (up to 3.2 times) in the UML was recorded during the period of new production, in early June. Depletion of particulate OM in deep waters was ascribed to fast dissolution or remineralization in the UML or upper part of aphotic layer. OM in July 2001 was characterized with 15.9% higher DOC pool compared to June 2003, and had refractory properties, suggesting the fjords to be an important source of organic matter for the continental shelf ecosystem. The DOC pool in these subarctic fjords represents the major component of the OM pool. The DOC concentrations in fjords are lower than those in previously studied warmer seas (e.g. the Adriatic Sea), whereas the concentrations of folic acid and SAS are comparable to those in the Adriatic Sea.

Decomposition of plant tissue submerged in an extremely acidic mining lake sediment: phenolic CuO-oxidation products and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy

In extremely acidic mining sediments of the Lusatian mining district, the alkalinisation process relies on organic C, which can serve as electron donor for microbially induced sulfate reduction. Plant material of the pioneer plant Juncus bulbosus is an important organic matter source in lake sediments. Therefore, decomposition of the plant tissue was assessed during the exposure of litterbags for 30 months in the 0–5 cm layer of waterlogged mining sediments, which have a pH between 2.5 and 3. The ash free dry weight (AFDW) and elemental content of the plant tissue were recorded several times during the exposure. Changes in chemical structure were analyzed by solid-state 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy and the lignin component characterized by wet-chemical CuO oxidation. The AFDW accounted for about 34% of initial biomass after field exposure for 30 months. Mass loss of biomass occurred in two phases with decomposition rates varying between 30 and 430 mg AFDW d −1. The mass loss increased considerably after 5–7 months when litterbags were invaded by fresh J. bulbosus plants. With respect to higher mass loss, 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy, showed slight changes of the bulk chemical composition after 11 months, indicating that microorganisms present in the sediments or in the rhizosphere degrade plant material as a whole, rather than selectively. During the second phase from about 11 months until the end of the exposure period, contribution of O-alkyl C most probably assignable to easily degradable polysaccharides decreased. In contrast, the contribution of alkyl, aromatic and carboxyl C increased. CuO oxidation showed that the lignin component of J. bulbosus is degraded oxidatively during field exposure. Our results indicate that the exposed plant material is decomposed in the sediment due to changes in sediment conditions that followed plant invasion of the litterbags. It is suggested that the rhizosphere of J. bulbosus by its influence on the redox potential, pH and the microbial component plays a crucial role in organic matter degradation in acidic mining sediments.

Temporal variations of sedimentation in shallow freshwater systems

Nineteen new traps which made it possible to sample almost the whole water column in shallow systems were exposed on a monthly basis during 18 months in two ponds. Quantitative and qualitative temporal variation of settled particles was shown even though seasonal variation was generally masked by bottom sediment resuspension in these shallow aquatic systems. Sedimentation rates fluctuated on a seasonal basis. They were minimum in spring and maximum in summer. These fluctuations were linked to the high primary production observed. These new traps showed that decaying submersed macrophytes can be an important source of organic matter, as well as decay of blue-green algal blooms which have always been considered responsible for anoxic problems in fish ponds. Interference by the fish farmer at various times of the year also caused sudden high sedimentation rates (>200 g m -2 d -1 ). Sedimentation in the fish ponds was controlled by natural mechanisms partly similar to those that occur in lakes, and by mechanisms specific to shallow systems and to aquatic systems managed by man.
