FEDOROV UNIVERSAL EQUATIONS IN THE STRING AND MEMBRANE THEORIES

It is shown that the equation of minimal hypersurface in the Euclidean (or pseudo-Euclidean) space can be written as the universal Fedorov matrix equation with first-order partial derivatives. Time-like minimal surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean Minkowski space describe the free motion of relativistic strings and membranes, whereas space-like minimal surfaces describe the potential in the nonlinear Born electrostatic. All of them are imaginary images of minimal surface of the Euclidean space. Spherically symmetric surfaces are found to be all the three types, the hypercatenoid of any dimensionality and its imaginary images. The Fedorov equations provide rich information on the minimal surfaces.

Simple equations for tracing rays through the Fresnel zone plate have been derived. The spot diagram constructed by means of the ray tracing shows an appearance of imagery of the Fresnel zone plate as a focusing element. The spot diagram can be obtained not only for the real images but also for the imaginary images. Some demonstrative examples of the spot diagram are given.

Causes for the Appearance of Fringes in Cholesterics, Williams Domains and Chiral Smectic C Liquid Crystals

Fringes observed in cholesterics (Ch), Williams domains (WD) and chiral smectic C liquid crystals (Sm C*) were studied systematically. Generally the fringes are clearly focused as real and imaginary images on planes just above the upper surface and near the lower surface of the samples. Additional images, sometimes defocused, may also be observed inside the samples. Three causes for this have been considered: (1) wave surface distrotion, (2) ray deflection from the wave normal that occurs in anisotropic media and (3) the effect of optical neutral lines. The fringes in Ch are due to cause (1) and those in WD to causes (1) and (2). All the causes, especially (2) and (3) apply to Sm C*. The importance of (2) is shown systematically for the first time.
