The Role of Corporate Management Strategies in Achieving Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development: An Empirical Analysis Based on Energy-Intensive Industries in the Emerging Seven (E7) Countries

The Emerging Seven (E7) nations face challenges in balancing economic growth and sustainability amid rapid industrialization. This study examines the roles of economic growth (EG), resource exploitation (RE), corporate management strategies (CMS), sustainable innovations (SI), industrialization (IND), and human empowerment (HE) in shaping energy efficiency (EE) and sustainable development (SD) from 1996 to 2022. Using the method of moments quantile regression (MMQR), this study captures heterogeneous effects across different performance levels. Robustness checks with the augmented mean group (AMG), common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG), and fixed effects (FE) models confirmed result stability, while Granger causality analysis revealed directional relationships. Findings indicated that RE and CMS enhance EE and SD, whereas IND hinders environmental conservation. EG improves EE at higher quantiles but negatively impacts SD in resource-dependent economies. SI supports EE but may create ecological constraints, requiring balanced policies. HE significantly boosts EE in developed regions though its influence on SD varies. These results align with the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) and governance theories, emphasizing the need for tailored policies. Strategic investment into green technologies, regulatory reforms, and human capital are essential for integrating economic growth with environmental sustainability in E7 nations.

Irwansyah. The city of Palembang is one of the cities in Indonesia that has environmental problems, namely the existence of densely populated settlements in riverbank areas. With these conditions, the Palembang City Government has made efforts to prevent river water pollution as a form of Healthy City development. This is realized by the construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant in Karya Jaya Village, Kertapati District, Palembang City, part of which is located right on the riverside. The main concern in this study is the role of the Government of Karya Jaya Village, Kertapati District, Palembang City in empowering the community to utilize communal WWTP which includes human empowerment, business empowerment, environmental empowerment, institutional empowerment, obstacles and efforts made to overcome them. The results of the study show that the role of the Karya Jaya Village Government, Kertapati District, Palembang City in environmental management consisting of human empowerment, business empowerment, environmental empowerment and institutional empowerment has not been carried out optimally. This is because the empowerment effort is a cross-sectoral effort. The obstacles that arise in the implementation of the role of the Karya Jaya Village Government, Kertapati District, Palembang City in environmental planning consist of budget limitations, community mindset and binding rules, which have not been overcome by the efforts that have been made, namely maximizing community participation and awareness. Unequal Autonomy: An Investigation of Individual and Societal Determinants of Individuals’ Sense of Autonomy in Europe

ABSTRACT This paper explores the social structure of individual autonomy in Europe. Drawing on the capability approach and human empowerment theory, it investigates how individuals’ sense of autonomy is structured by individual means and conversion factors as well as economic, cultural, and institutional context conditions. Using data from the European Social Survey and the European Quality of Life Survey, these relationships are analyzed for 107,070 individuals in 18 European countries and four points in time between 2006 and 2016. Multilevel analyses reveal financial security, health, and social connectedness as the most important drivers of individuals’ sense of autonomy. On the macro level, national wealth, civil liberties, and an emancipative value climate are all found to be positively linked to individuals’ sense of autonomy, albeit weakly. Considering the value individuals attach to leading an autonomous life and the beneficial effects autonomy has been shown to have on people’s well-being, these findings shed first light on the unequal distribution of autonomy and autonomy resources on the individual and macro levels. Concluding, the paper highlights the potential for future research and policy implications.

Analyzing Human-Centric Wireless Energy Harvesting for Sustainable and Resilient Energy Systems

Discussions around wireless communications and energy harvesting in the literature are elitist and techno-centric. There is a need for more studies on a human-centric approach that simplifies the concept and links energy harvesting with human empowerment and well-being. Also, studies so far on the implementation of wireless energy harvesting in rural settlements have been scanty despite the important role wireless communication plays in social interactions and financial transactions within rural communities. The challenge of little awareness of the human sustainability impact of WEH is impeding stakeholders’ advocacy and advancement of wireless energy harvesting (WEH) despite its real and perceived benefits. So far, research efforts as reported in the literature are less than proportionate to the potential of WEH. Apart from providing sustainable energy for wireless devices and networks, its generation of nonelectric renewable energy is a huge plus for ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all as contained in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7). Given the astronomical growth in the use of wireless devices globally, more research studies are needed to create more awareness for massive WEH advocacy. This study uses a model-driven approach to simplify and highlight critical aspects of WEH such as wireless body area network, sources of non-electric renewable energy sources, green energy (environmental protection), intermittent nature of renewable wireless energy sources, and research directions. Also, the application of WEH for the sustenance of lives and livelihood in rural economies is examined using the rural community of Adum-Aiona in Nigeria as a case study. It is expected that the information provided will create more awareness and foster further discussions around the human-centric angle of WEH even as advances in technology continue to be made.

Development for Empowerment: Mobilising Online and Digital Micro-Credentials for Refugees

Development for empowerment focuses on leveraging education via digital technologies and micro-credentials for training and education as part of the integration, social inclusion and capacity building for displaced persons. Development for empowerment builds upon the previous concepts of development including Amartya Sen’s ‘development as freedom,’ the core concept of education and learning as development, and the use of digital technologies for building human capacity so people can make their own choices and pursue the lives they wish to lead. Development for empowerment for refugees broadens the construct of development and is integral to promoting and nurturing ‘equity, access and success’ amongst refugee populations. The authors highlight critical resources that support the basic tenets of human empowerment such as the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights, the UN’s Basic Needs Approach to Refugees, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and the key strategies of online delivery and micro-credentials development. Moreover, the authors emphasise that the integration, social inclusion and integration of refugees is a highly complex construct to implement and sustain, thus reflecting the constant tension of refugees’ emotional desire to return home versus rebuilding a new life in a new country. In the final analysis, ‘development for empowerment’ + open and distance learning + digital micro-credentials create a powerful synergy for serving refugees and fulfilling the spirit of preserving human rights through education and the pursuit of one’s chosen life as a precious human ideal.

E-learning Method and University Life of Married Female Students in Patriarchal Social Structure in Sociological Perspective

Education is a process and means of human empowerment and social transformation. There are both formal and informal practices in educational processes. University is a unit of the formal education system that provides specific knowledge and skills in a universal context. Face-to-face teaching is traditionally practiced as the teaching pedagogy in university education in Nepal. This paper analyzes the challenges and opportunities of e-learning for married female students within the university context under the patriarchal social structure. Married female students’ in-depth interviews based on the challenges and opportunities they faced in the e-learning system in university education have prepared the cases through their narratives as the primary date of the research. The cases have been collected by purposive sampling through the university level of students. The content analysis method has analyzed both primary and secondary data types. Married female students have been found to suffer from problems with individual devices, financial problems, computer literacy, regularity of electricity, and poor internet quality. Similarly, they have to face house-loaded problems during class time. They have the opportunity to manage household activities and adapt to new technology in learning, saving travel time and cost under the e-learning system of university life. The theoretical explanation of patriarchy only gets partially analog except for the partial application of its assumptions in the e-learning system, mainly for the married female students of the university.

Laminar Ulva Species: A Multi-Tool for Humankind?

Green algae, phylum Chlorophyta, due to their green appearance as higher plants, are seen as one of the raw materials to be widely used by humanity for different purposes. How can these different purposes achieve ONU Sustainable Development Goals? The genus Ulva sp. is widely distributed through all continents, tolerating different ecosystems (freshwater and marine), different intensities of light, temperature, and salinity. The Ulva sp. life cycle is isomorphic and biphasic type, also affected by biotic factors such as thallus age, phytohormones, microbiome, sporulation inhibitors and metabolomic. Due to that, types of farming can be implemented depending on the cultivation method and it is final biomass exploitation. Thus, this critical review analyzes the laminar Ulva species from the ecology and demonstrates that the seaweed biomass application, may make significant contributions to marine ecosystems, humans, aquaculture, and biotechnological innovation, indicating its importance in both environmental and socioeconomic contexts based on experiments across the world, time and critical thinking. This means that explaining the actual road and future roads of laminar Ulva into a multi-tool development from humankind welfare. With right management of resources and human empowerment, Ulva sp. products can be produced facing climate change and support different industries. However, responsible management of Ulva populations and farming is essential to prevent overgrowth, green floods, and maintain environmental equilibrium.

MAPPING OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN INDONESIA BASED ON INFLUENCING FACTORS USING GEOGRAPHICALLY WEIGHTED ORDINAL LOGISTIC REGRESSION

Gender inequality is a condition of discrimination between men and women that results from unequal social systems and structures. Gender inequality is measured based on the gender inequality index (IKG). This research aims to map gender inequality in Indonesia based on influencing factors and compare classification accuracy results between the GWOLR and ordinal logistic regression model. Data was obtained from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS RI) and KemenPPPA in the year of 2022. The Gender Inequality Index data as the response variable is categorized using an ordinal data scale, namely IKG (1) Low, IKG (2) Middle, and IKG (3) High with ten predictor variables from the dimensions of health, education, human empowerment, socio-culture, and employment, with the amount of data is 34 observation data. The research method uses geographically weighted ordinal logistic regression (GWOLR) based on exponential kernel weighting. In the data analysis stage, ordinal logistic regression is performed before applying GWOLR, and after the model is formed, the classification accuracy will be calculated. The results of this study indicate that mapping gender inequality in Indonesia based on influencing factors using the GWOLR model forms three groups. The first mapping location labeled as low inequality is influenced by women whose birth was attended by a health worker (X1), women who have a pre-employment card (X7), women who are employed (X8), and the percentage of women who married before the age of 17 (X10). The second mapping location labeled with middle inequality is influenced by women whose delivery is attended by a health worker (X1), women's net enrolment in higher education (X2), and women married before the age of 17 (X10). The three locations categorized as high inequality are influenced by female birth attendance by health personnel (X1), Women's Human Development Index (X3), female rape offenses (X4), female domestic violence offenses (X6), and female marriage under the age of 17 (X10). Modeling the Gender Inequality Index using the GWOLR model resulted in higher classification accuracy than the ordinal logistic regression model, which was 94.11%.

Stunting is a world problem because of its implications for determining the future of the nation. Indonesia, as a developing country, still has a high stunting prevalence rate. Based on data from the 2022 National Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI), the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is 21.6%. This figure is still more than the target figure set by the World Health Organization (WHO), the stunting rate should be no more than 20%. There were obstacles in implementing the stunting reduction target, one of which was a lack of important intake such as animal protein and vegetable protein. This research was conducted with the aim of analyzing stunting prevention by empowering village communities through mutual cooperation agents in Kalimantong Village, West Sumbawa Regency. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research results show that Kalimantong Village has a relatively low prevalence rate compared to other villages in Brang Ene District, West Sumbawa Regency. Therefore, to support the target of reducing stunting, human empowerment is needed through mutual cooperation agents to prevent stunting and increase human resources in Indonesia.

Calibrating the Conatus in Morphogenetic Régulation: Towards a Problématique of Perseverance

AbstractThe intersection between Critical realism, complex system thinking and Luhmannian autopoiesis has been subject to various debates. By showing how a complex system necessitates a trans‐immanent philosophical foundation, Knio proposed in a previous article a problématique of calibration which seeks to bring back to the fore the importance of considering a complex causality generated by environments onto boundaries and systems in an iterative, recursive, and emergentist way. The next step is to understand the motivation behind the actions of a trans‐immanent system. This paper contributes to this discussion by operationalizing the motivation behind action in terms of the Spinozian conatus. In so doing, this research shows how trans‐immanent systems such as people and society not only objectify (socially construct) but objectivate (create) objects behind desire. Finally, the forgoing shows how systemic persistence is not a simple matter of inertia or imitation but it is a matter of empowering reflexivity or, perseverance. This is shown through a thorough overview of the different interpretations of the conatus, followed by their application to several case studies within pre‐existing and prominent theories of institutional change within capitalism. As a result, the conatus as based on a trans‐immanent system offers great potential in institutional analysis; exemplified in the Critical Realist model of social change: Morphogenetic Régulation. This research contributes not only to political, economic, social, and cultural analyses of institutional change but analyses of complex and open systems as a whole, and thus understandings of human empowerment.

Human centricity and technology advances research in social sciences: A literature insight on artificial intelligence

Abstract Evolving technology and human-machine interaction are two major stances that question human centricity as a core dimension for the future placement of human variables and social perspectives inside intelligent systems. The present paper explores present challenges and an up to date research synthesis concerning social sciences dimensions, theories, concepts and implementation with regard to the study of human centred artificial intelligence. The main scope consists of drawing several red lines for future research and theoretical social insights on artificial intelligence at work. Following a scholarly literature insight and several reference works, the study explores major topics of interest analysed so far and proposes new directions for the evaluation of human variables and machine learning at work in an organizational setting. Results showed there is a vital need for expanding research from human centricity point of view on the present matter, where studies are still scarce and heterogenous. Moreover, concept clarification and theoretical explanations are yet to be sufficient in explaining people interactions and management of artificial intelligence at the workplace. In conclusion human empowerment at work through ethical and person oriented intelligent systems in a given organizational context can ensure a fair and efficient development of people’s skills, professional objectives or level of performance while promoting human values, ethical principles and preserving the well-being. The paper presents also several practical implications of social sciences domain on artificial intelligence exploration and a few future directions for research.
