Combination of passive and active methods towards site characterization of accelerometer stations in Greece

AbstractThe strong correlation between earthquake damage and the local geological conditions in an area has long been established, and site characterization studies are common practice for realistic estimation of seismic hazard and mitigation of the respective seismic risk. Estimation of the time‐averaged S‐waves velocity of the topmost 30 m (VS30) is recognized as a basic proxy for site characterization and has been incorporated in several building codes. In our work, we examine the inversion of single‐station ambient noise horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) curves to estimate the local one‐dimensional (1D) VS(Z) structure. The inversion is performed based on the diffuse field assumption, which allows for the inversion of HVSR, including the contributions of both body and surface waves. Although ambient noise data acquisition is immensely cost‐effective, HVSR curve inversion is subject to the solution non‐uniqueness issue, offering ambiguous results. To provide a possible solution for this matter, additional near‐surface geophysical methods such as the multichannel analysis of surface waves and the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) were applied to derive information on the shallow subsurface structure. The acquired 1D seismic velocity profile was implemented as initial model in the HVSR inversion to constrain the velocities of the upper meters. Additionally, the inferred stratigraphy from the ERT electrical profile was utilized to constrain the thicknesses of the layers. Tests were conducted with and without a priori information from complementary techniques to explore how the HVSR inversion procedure is facilitated. The proposed methodology was applied at the locations of six accelerometers in the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, under different geological conditions. The reliability of the inverted VS(Z) models was checked by performing 1D numerical simulations of ambient noise waveforms generated by distributed sources and by direct comparison between synthetic ambient noise HVSR and single‐station earthquake HVSR curves.

Shear wave velocity estimation in the Bengal Basin, Bangladesh by HVSR analysis: implications for engineering bedrock depth

The S-wave velocity (VS) in the Bengal Basin, Bangladesh has not been resolved from the ground surface to an intermediate depth in a regional context despite its importance for seismic hazard and risk evaluation. For this reason, we estimated VS profiles beneath 19 seismic stations in Bangladesh to a depth approximately 2800 m by employing full horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) curve inversion under the diffuse field theory for the noise wavefield. The seismic stations are concentrated in three tectonic zones within the basin: the Surma basin (SB, Zone 1), Bengal Foredeep (BF, Zone 2), and Chittagong Tripura Fold Belt (CTFB, Zone 3). Full HVSR analysis (from 0.2 to 10 Hz) allowed us to obtain deep profiles with combined insights from shallow geotechnical boreholes and deep P-wave velocity (VP) information from active seismic surveys. From the resultant VS profiles, engineering bedrock (VS > 760 m/s) depths were also identified throughout the study area for the first time. The VS profiles within the Holocene to Miocene sedimentary sequences showed rapid variations from location to location. This is due to the highly variable near-surface geology caused by the dense and complex river network and tectonic deformation in Bangladesh. Except for three stations, the engineering bedrock depth exceeded 30 m at all stations. These results indicate the existence of deep soft soil in the study area, where VS30 based site characterization is inappropriate. Furthermore, seismic site response was estimated at a station (DHAK) by simulating a subduction zone earthquake. The resulting response spectrum (RS) exhibited ground motion amplification over a longer period, suggesting that multistory buildings at the site may be at risk if subjected to large earthquakes. The outcomes of this study can serve as useful guidelines for seismic risk reduction planning in Bangladesh.

Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) Analysis of the Passive Seismic Data on Alluvial Lithology: An Example from Bandung Basin Rim

Bandung basin is surrounded by active volcanoes at the center of Western Java region. Soil type of this area consists mostly of volcanic alluvial, formed by the past volcanic activities. At this location, we performed passive seismic surveys to reveal the sedimentary characteristics using a triaxial seismometer, to study the properties which have potential implications on environmental aspects, such as natural disaster mitigation and the city planning. In this work we reported the analysis of three component vibration signals by means of the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) calculation to identify the sediment thickness through the dominant frequency of the earth vibration. The method signal processing successfully revealed the amplification factor of the area, which is very important to determine the potential ground motion induced disasters. The data was collected using a laboratory developed seismic logging device with sensitivity of 0.28 ± 5% V⋅s/cm. The signal preconditioning was carried out to shape the acquired signals with high noise level, prior to the HVSR calculation. From the measurements and computation, we obtained the thickness variation at the chosen survey area of around 32 to 64 meters, corresponding to the measured dominant frequency of around 2.5 to 5.0 Hz. The results agree very well with the reference sediment thickness measured by the microtremor surveys. The vibration frequencies are also consistent with the range suggested by the literature

Spatial variation of strong ground motions in a heterogeneous soil site based on observation records from a dense array

The difference in local sediment thickness and soil properties has a significant impact on the spatial variation mechanism of seismic ground motion in the engineering scale. Due to the scarcity of observation data of dense arrays, the existing theoretical studies are mostly developed by numerical simulation methods, including human factors and a large number of assumptions. In view of this, based on the multistation observation records of the Luxian MS 6.0 earthquake and Yibin MS 5.1 earthquake obtained using a Zigong dense array, the study quantitatively analyzes the spatial characteristics of ground motion in heterogeneous soil sites by integrating a theoretical model with numerical analysis. In this study, many popular approaches including root-mean-square acceleration, horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) of microtremor and strong motion records, and lagged coherency are comprehensively utilized to make the conclusion accurate and reliable. The results show that local soil conditions could affect the attenuation of coherence function with distance. The station-pairs with similar HVSR characteristics generally present a higher coherence level when the difference of the interstation distance is less than 100 m. In addition, the coherency function between stations will be greatly reduced when the H/V spectral ratio characteristics differ greatly, which is also obvious in the low-frequency part below 5 Hz. Finally, a lagged coherency model that considers the influence of heterogeneous soil is constructed in this study. The model has a definite physical meaning and can better represent the spatial variation of ground motion at nonbedrock sites.

Early Investigation of a Landslide Sliding Surface by HVSR and VES Geophysical Techniques Combined, a Case Study in Guarumales (Ecuador)

The access road to the powerhouse’s hydraulic system’s facilities in Guarumales (Azuay, Ecuador) presents a medium-sized landslide. Geophysical tests were conducted in the initial research stage, combining electrical and seismic methods. A vertical electrical sounding (VES) and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) survey campaign have been taken as a reference for the analysis of the landslide area. The distribution of these test points has been at three different levels along the landslide where the access road crosses it, trying to cover the area’s most extensive possible length and width. In the area, we find the geology dominated by the presence of schists, altered to different degrees and presenting blocks of material with a lower degree of alteration within colluvium formed by a clayey matrix and coarse material of the exact nature. There is also observed runoff water and groundwater in the area. The results obtained through SEV tests have allowed for defining the separation zone of the mobilized or sliding materials compared to the fixed or immobile ones (potentially, the sliding surface was marked). Using the HVSR technique, the natural vibration frequencies of the ground associated with the sliding mass (separation of seismic impedances between a two-layer model: mobile and fixed) have been determined. Previous authors proposed an empirical relationship establishing the exponential relationship, already proposed by previous authors, between sediment thickness and natural frequencies. It has been possible to determine the depth of the position of the loosely compacted sediment zone (and probably moving or mobilized) compared to that of compact materials (immobile) and thereby define the potential rupture surface.

Identification Protocols for Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio Peaks

ABSTRACTPeaks in horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HVSRs) of Fourier amplitudes from three-component recordings of ground vibrations without undue local anthropogenic influence are used to identify site resonances, which are an important component of site response. We address two topics: (1) how should HVSR peaks be identified and (2) are there appreciable differences in HVSR derived using different instruments recording microtremors and seismic strong ground motions? We propose identifying peaks by considering peak amplitudes relative to neighboring ordinates and peak width. The procedure incorporates a regression tree algorithm that can be tuned to conform with user preferences toward relatively “conservative” or “liberal” peak identification (producing few or many sites with peaks, respectively). We then investigate the consistency of microtremor-based HVSRs (mHVSRs) derived from seismometers and accelerometers, which show a high rate of false negatives (missed peaks) from accelerometers with a full scale of ± 2g or greater. In contrast, mHVSRs derived from collocated temporary and permanent seismometers (optimized to record teleseismic signals) have about 60%–80% consistency (with no apparent bias in peak attributes). This indicates that mHVSRs from accelerometers having a broad full scale are unreliable but that mHVSRs can be reliably obtained from temporary or permanent seismometers. Finally, we compare seismometer-based HVSR from microtremor and earthquake (eHVSRs) sources. Results are consistent for 60%–70% of sites (i.e., both either do or do not have significant peaks, and when peaks are present, they occur at similar frequencies, <20% change). For sites with an mHVSR peak, the rate of corresponding eHVSR peaks is nearly 50%, whereas for sites without an mHVSR peak the eHVSR peak rate is low (about 20%). The mismatch rate for mHVSR peak sites is sufficiently high that the use of eHVSR to derive site response models is likely too optimistic (overestimates model effectiveness); mHVSR is preferred for consistency with information available in forward applications.

Reducing the uncertainties in the NGA-West2 ground motion models by incorporating the frequency and amplitude of the fundamental peak of the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio of surface ground motions

Ground motion models (GMMs) are developed empirically to predict ground motion intensity measures. The site effects in GMMs are usually addressed using time-averaged shear-wave velocity for the upper 30 m of the site (VS30) and shear-wave isosurface depth (i.e. Z1.0 and Z2.5). However, the former does not include the effect of layered soil structure on the site’s response, and the latter is generally inferred. Many studies have shown that site fundamental frequency can be used as an additional site proxy. Using horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR), one can estimate the site fundamental frequency in a fast and inexpensive way. In this article, a model is developed to incorporate site fundamental frequency and its corresponding amplification factor in the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA)-West2 GMMs to reduce the uncertainties. First, a subset of the NGA-West2 database consisting of 14,636 recordings from 298 events is selected after a two-step screening procedure and used to compute the horizontal-to-vertical response spectral ratio (HVSRPSA) of recorded surface ground motions. Second, automated methodologies previously developed by the authors are used to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of site fundamental frequency (fml), its corresponding amplitude (Aml), and associated uncertainties. Third, a mixed-effect maximum likelihood approach is implemented for residual analysis and site-term residual calculation. Finally, an HVSR-based model is developed for the NGA-West2 dataset considering the relationship between site-term residual and the HVSR-based proxies (i.e. fml and Aml). In this model, Aml is as important as fml in reducing the uncertainties. Results show that using a single HVSR-based model can consistently reduce the site-to-site variability ([Formula: see text]) for all NGA-West2 GMMs, which already include the effect of VS30, Z1.0, or Z2.5. Besides, the reduction in [Formula: see text] is period-dependent, with an average of 13% reduction. As a result of the reduction in [Formula: see text], total standard deviation ( σ) decreases by 3.5% on average.

Seismic microzonation based on HVSR inversion results for shear wave (Vs30) mapping and soil vulnerability in West Sulawesi and South Sulawesi Regions

The Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) is a seismic analysis method used to obtain information about subsurface geological characteristics. This method is based on the spectral ratio analysis between the horizontal and vertical components of earthquakes or other vibration sources. HVSR has proven to be an effective tool in evaluating rock layers, layer thickness, rock hardness, and geological hazard potential. In the HVSR method, seismic data are measured using three-component seismometers, the N-S (North-South), E-W (East-West), and vertical components. In this study, the HVSR method is used for Vs30 inversion to estimate shear wave velocity at a depth of 30m. The southern and western regions of Sulawesi have various geological conditions and high seismicity levels. The results of this inversion can be used for mapping soil vulnerability indices. The obtained soil vulnerability index values indicate high vulnerability near the Palu-Koro fault, with A0 9.27 at F0 3.2 Hz. This method can also estimate shear wave velocity values at a depth of 30 m. Vs30 values range from 200 m/s to 500 m/s at various measurement points, indicating variability. According to the SNI 1726:2012 and NEHRP classifications, the research area has soil conditions ranging from medium to soft.

Study Characteristics of a Multipurpose Reactor Building G.A. Siwabessy using Floor Spectral Ratio

The G.A. Siwabessy Reactor is a vital national object of Indonesia’s nuclear infrastructure. These nuclear facilities are vulnerable to earthquake shocks due to regional tectonic activity. This could have a major impact on society and the surrounding environment if a nuclear disaster occurs. To mitigate hazards, we investigate location and building characteristics through Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) and Floor Spectral Ratio (FSR) analysis. We determine the natural or dominant frequency (f0) and the amplification factor (A0). We carried out data acquisition on 8 - 19 January 2023 using the Lennartz LE-3D/20s short period seismometer. The data collection time was 31 minutes with 100 Hz sampling. We analyzed the data using Geopsy software. The natural frequency range obtained for wave propagation based on the direction of the NS component is in the range 1,423 – 4,726 Hz. For wave propagation in structures with the EW component direction, the f0 value is in the range 1,280 Hz to 9,753 Hz and the average f0 value in this direction is 2,957 Hz. This research will be a reference in the Periodic Safety Assessment regarding the resilience of building structures due to changes in the maximum ground acceleration value as a condition for extending the operational permit for the G.A. Siwabessy reactor.

Seismic vulnerability of the Campus II Universitas Syiah Kuala

Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) is planning to develop a new campus (Campus II). The location of the study area is relatively close to the Seulimum fault which historically has generated a devastating earthquake. Therefore, a seismic vulnerability study is important to conduct in use for reference before the development. This study aims to determine the seismic vulnerability index in the Campus II development area of USK in Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar Regency using a Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) method. Potential earthquake damage can be studied by analyzing the dominant frequency (f0), amplification (A0), seismic vulnerability (Kg), and Vs 30. The microtremor acquisition was carried out by using a Broadband seismometer with 100 sps at 37 measurement points with a distance of 500 meters for each station. We use the Geopsy software to analyze seismic data by applying Fourier transform and STA/LTA concept to Rayleigh waves and obtain the dominant frequency value. The 1D velocity inversion was derived by Dinver using the Neighborhood Algorithm (NA). The results of the analysis show that the dominant frequency value is higher around the STA17 point, while the amplification value and seismic vulnerability are highest in the north (at STA2 and STA3) and in the south (at STA28, STA29, and STA30). The higher amplification region is associated soft soil identified as alluvium (Qh). On the other hand, the 1D inversion results at a depth of 30 shows Vs values of 661.142 - 1106.31 m/s (at STA3 and STA17) which indicates the presence of bedrock, making it suitable for future development although more detail investigation is required.

Identification of soil characteristics in the Central Java Region using the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) inversion method

This research aims as one of the efforts to mitigate earthquake disasters by using the HVSR method based on microtremor data at 28 BMKG seismic stations in the central Java Island region to estimate the dominant frequency (f0) and amplification (A0) that describe the dynamic characteristics of the soil and analyse the shear wave velocity at a depth of 30 meters (Vs30). The dominant frequency values in the study area range from 0.648 to 18.257 Hz. The amplification values scattered in the study area ranged from 0.788 - 7.496. This research also produces dominant period parameters (T0) and seismic vulnerability (Kg). The highest seismic vulnerability values are at BUJI in Buayan, Kebumen; GBJI in Gringsing, Batang; and SBJM in Sanden, Bantul. In addition, the Vs30 value is helpful to determine how strong the building foundation resists earthquakes. Based on the Vs value in the ground profile with ellipticity curve modelling, the Vs30 value ranges from 204.756 - 903.046 m/s. The distribution of Vs30 values shows that the research points in central Java are spread by a variety of hard and very dense soil types to soft rock (SC).

Stochastic finite fault modeling of Mw 6.4 earthquake along Indo-Burmese arc and site classification of its seismic recording station

This study simulates the strong ground motion of an earthquake having magnitude 6.4 occurred on 4 February 2011 in Indo-Burmese Arc (IBA). This earthquake recorded on seven seismic recording stations namely Jowai, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Nagaon, Guwahati, Cooch Bihar and Kokhrajhar. Also, estimation of site class performed to observe the site effects of recording stations in this study. The simulation performed on the basis of revised stochastic finite fault model with dynamic corner frequency and site class for the seismic recording station where the earthquake recorded has been estimated by using Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) technique because modeling and simulation of ground motion majorly depend upon the recorded ground motion as well as site effects, where earthquake has been recorded. The revised well known finite source simulation program (EXSIM) used in this study becomes efficient in providing the results for small magnitude earthquake occurred at large distance. The average HVSR curves plotted for all the recording stations, providing peak frequency for all 7 sites. It is observed from the present work that simulated time histories as far as primary attributes, for example, Fourier spectra, Peak ground acceleration (PGA), Response spectra, Predominant frequency are in close concurrence with the recorded ones. The predominant frequency (fpeak) obtained from HVSR technique has been validated from existing literature for the estimation of site class for seismic recording stations. The fpeak determines the average shear wave velocity (Vs30) at depth of 30 ​m of overburden thickness which varies from 200 ​m/s to 1600 ​m/s according to Program for Excellence in Strong Motion Studies (PESMOS). Whereas, National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) provision consider the site class for Vs30 below 180 ​m/s. Due its wide range of site characterization, it has been adopted globally. Therefore, in this study, the site class obtained has been compared with the site classification scheme recommended by PESMOS, NEHRP provisions and previous literature. However, the ground motion parameters and the soil classification of the earthquake recording stations for the IBA region has not been explored yet even after seeing its severity in the past decades. Productive representation of present earthquake gives the confidence to understand and evaluate seismic danger at various parts of Indo- Burmese region from tremors of various sizes. In this study it is proposed that PESMOS site classification data should be revised because it covers wide range of soil types just into three (A, B and C type) class.

Site classification using deep‐learning‐based image recognition techniques

AbstractClassification of local soil conditions is important for the interpretation of structural seismic damage, which also plays a vital role in site‐specific seismic hazard analyses. In this study, we propose to classify sites as an image recognition task using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)‐based technique. We design the input image as a combination of the topographic slope and the mean horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) of earthquake recordings. A DCNN model with five convolutional layers is trained using 1649 sites in Japan. The recall rates for site classes C, D, and E using our DCNN classifier for Japanese sites are 82%, 70%, and 60%, respectively. When compared with existing site classification schemes relying on predefined standard HVSR curves, our proposed method achieves the highest total accuracy rate (between 73% and 75%). The generality and applicability of our trained classifier are further validated using sites in Europe with a total accuracy between 64% and 66%. The proposed data‐driven approach could be extended to other types of site amplification functions in the future.

Regional zonation based on seismic vulnerability using local site effect analysis and potential damage to the city of Medan (North Sumatra, Indonesia) due to earthquake

BackgroundMicrozonation becomes important for big cities like Medan (North Sumatra, Indonesia) as population agglomeration increases in urban areas resulting in rapid and unplanned construction. Mitigation efforts must be carried out to minimize losses arising from earthquakes, such as loss of life and environmental damage, and it can be done by analyzing seismic susceptibility and local site effects.PurposeThis study analyzes the potential for environmental damage caused by seismic hazards in the city of Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the definition and methodology of seismic–geotechnical hazard zoning and the methodology used for making seismic hazard maps with the case study of Medan City.MethodsWhile determining the zoning, microzonation measurements and environmental data parameters are involved. To obtain comprehensive results, microzonation measurements were carried out using three methods, namely the Multichannel Seismic Analysis Surface Wave (MASW), Spatial Autocorrelation (SPAC), and Horizontal-To-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) with 200 measuring points spread throughout the city of Medan. Parameter weighting values such as population, site class, seismic susceptibility, dominant period, land cover, slope, and weather class were obtained using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method.ResultsWe presented the result of the survey, including the MASW, SPAC, and HVSR results. In general, medium soil and soft soil dominate almost all areas of Medan city. The estimated depth of engineering bedrock is at a depth of about 291.33 – 735.87 meters from the ground surface. The dominant period values ranged from 0.0907 s to 8.30723 s.ConclusionsWe classified Medan City (North Sumatra) into several zones, based on their seismic vulnerability using local site effect analysis and potential damage due to earthquakes. This study is necessary for future seismic hazard assessment.

One-Dimensional Site Response Analysis: Model Error Estimation

ABSTRACT Two essential elements of partially nonergodic probabilistic seismic hazard analysis are the estimation of local site effects and the quantification of their uncertainty. Local site effects usually are evaluated using numerical site response analyses, often assuming the 1D site response. This research addresses two questions regarding the estimation of local site effects: for which stations may 1D site response analysis be beneficial? What is the model uncertainty in 1D site response analysis? In answering these two questions, we compare empirical and theoretical transfer functions (TFs) at KiK-net stations and apply state-of-the-art statistical tools. Regarding the first question, previous research associated the applicability of 1D site response to the topography of the site, geological features, and the shape and frequency of the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) peak. Among 22 candidate parameters, we find the combination of topographical position index (also known as relative elevation) and the ratio of theoretical TF predominant frequency over HVSR predominant frequency to be the most efficient predictor. However, the accuracy of predictions made by these two parameters is only 60%, highlighting the need for additional research. To address the second question, we use theoretical and empirical TFs to obtain the model error in 1D site response analyses. Model error uncertainty (in natural log units) in predicting TF ranges from 0.1 at low frequencies up to 0.4 around 10 Hz.

From HVSR to site SH response function: Potentiality and pitfalls inferred by 1D physical modelling

The capability of the ambient vibration Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratios (HVSR) in identifying the main aspects characterizing the conventional 1D site response curve was explored by physical modelling. This approach avoids possible biases induced by data processing by focusing on the underlying physical phenomenon. Moreover, differently from empirical approaches, this also allows exploring an unlimited range of subsoil configurations. By considering a huge set of realistic Vs profiles, HVSR curves were simulated and compared with the corresponding SH acceleration transfer functions (ATFs) obtained by linear equivalent numerical modelling, which is a standard for the professional practice. These comparisons focused on the values of F0 (the lowest resonance frequency), Fd (the frequency associated with maximum peak amplitude) and corresponding amplitudes (A0 and Ad respectively). Outcomes indicate that when F0 and Fd values coincide, frequency of the HVSR peak represents a reliable proxy to identify 1D resonance frequency. HVSR remains a good proxy for F0 in the remaining cases, while it is less effective concerning Fd in particular when this value is different from F0 and is identified in the frequency range 10–30 Hz. Finally, the results concerning peak amplitude values show a tendency by HVSR to underestimate in a similar way both A0 and Ad values.

Structure of the Kathmandu basin inferred from microtremor measurements: a preliminary study

SUMMARY This research aims at characterizing the deep sedimentary basin of Kathmandu (Nepal) from microtremor measurements, by using two surveys carried out in November 2015 and November 2018. The data collected are sufficient for a qualitative investigation of the seismic response of such a complex basin. The measurements were undertaken in the framework of a collaboration between the NSET (National Society for Earthquake Technology, Nepal) and the OGS (National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, Italy). During the two campaigns, a series of passive seismic surveys were made, taking into consideration both single broad-band sensors and arrays. The 2015 study initially focused on the Lalitpur area (southern part of Kathmandu) and was later extended to the northern and more urbanized area of the capital city of Nepal. The 2018 survey focused on estimating the S-wave velocity field of the entire stratigraphic sequence by array and a repetition of some Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) measurements close to two boreholes with reliable stratigraphy. Two inversion methods, using the data from the seismic arrays, were useful to infer the S-wave velocity profiles of the shallower layers and to interpret some HVSRs. The outcome is a map of the periods of single station data representing the seismic response of the basin. Comparing these results with the strong motion data of the Gorkha 2015 main shock, we confirm that the longer periods are not only the effects of the earthquake source, but also of the local response of the basin itself.

Partitions among elastic waves for dynamic surface loads in a layered medium

SUMMARY The relationship between the Green's function and the average correlations of the elastic displacements within a diffuse field has been firmly established. The energies of horizontal and vertical motion in such a field are proportional to the imaginary part of the corresponding diagonal components of the Green's tensor for coincident source and receiver. Given this remarkable connection, we examine the partitions of elastic waves due to dynamic horizontal and vertical surface loads in a layered elastic media. The elastic radiation characteristics for horizontally layered media are much more complicated than for the homogeneous half-space. While the corresponding power partitions of the different types of waves in a half-space do not vary with respect to frequency, even in an elastic medium consisting of layers over a half-space, the modal structure shows strong variations in the frequency, mainly around the main peak and the minimum of the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR). Using a test model with a moderately high impedance contrast, we find that most of the energy density of the horizontal displacements is concentrated in the fundamental mode of the Love waves, reaching ∼80 per cent of the power in the horizontal components. The vertical displacement of the P-SV body waves reaches a maximum of ∼85 per cent, while the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves reaches a maximum of ∼99 per cent of the available power in the vertical motion. With this analysis, it is possible to analyse the multimodal effects in the dispersion diagrams and explicitly relate the partition of the energy density with the dispersion curves and the HVSR under the diffuse field assumption.

Local Site Effects Investigation in Durres City (Albania) Using Ambient Noise, after the 26 November 2019 (M6.4) Destructive Earthquake

Site characterization of metropolitan areas, especially after an earthquake, is of paramount importance for interpretation of spatial damage distribution and taking measures that assure realistic design actions to strengthen existing constructions and create new ones. Such a case is the city of Durres, Albania, that was hit by the disastrous earthquake of 26 November 2019 (M6.4). Significant differences in structural damage were observed throughout the city, despite its uniform epicentral distance (approximately 15 km); this could be either due to varying vulnerability of the affected constructions and/or to spatial variation of strong ground motion in the city, resulting from local site effects; the latter factor was investigated in this study. This was achieved by taking single station ambient noise measurements throughout the city, at approximately 80 sites. Ambient noise measurements are favorable, as acquiring ambient noise data is an easy and effective noninvasive approach within urban environments. Measurements were processed using the widely applied Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) method, following the SESAME project (2004) guidelines. Their fundamental and dominant frequencies, fo and fd, respectively, were calculated and related to the iso-depth contours of the investigated area, as well as their corresponding amplitudes, Ao, and Ad. These experimental parameters and the HVSR curves were used to group all examined sites into classes with similar properties. This clustering provided a zonation map with four categories consisting of similar shapes and amplitudes, applicable to the city of Durres. This map can be utilized as a first level zonation of local site effects for the city. In addition, dynamic properties of soil profiles in selected sites were investigated and tested using 1D synthetic ambient noise data, based on the Hisada (1994, 1995) simulation method, and compared to experimental HVSRs in proximity to the selected sites. A comparison of the proposed four categories zonation map to the observed damage of the 26 November 2019, mainshock is attempted and evaluated. The four categories zonation map with similar expected local site effects proposed in this study can be used as a first level seismic microzonation of Durres. Undoubtedly, corrections for 2D/3D effects on ground shaking must be applied to sites lying in the edges of the Durres basin.

The Analysis of Triaxial Passive Seismic Signal Data Using Python Scripting Language

The local geological and the physical conditions of earth’s ground defines its vibration characteristics. Such vibrations can be detected using conventional passive seismic methods, i.e., a microtremor recording method, which acquires ground vibration data in a suitable sampling time. The method utilizes natural seismic sources, originating from both natural and artificial sources. In this work we present the algorithm to process passive seismic signals, recorded from a laboratory developed triaxial seismic logging device. We use python scripting language to perform the signal processing work. We analyzed the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) of the signal to determine the on-site natural frequency. The results were compared to the reference data from a high sensitivity microtremor apparatus, at the exact same location. The results show a fair agreement between the low sensitivity and the high sensitivity seismometer, on the sites with low environmental disturbance. However, the values fluctuate significantly at noisy sites. Either way, our results measure the correct dominant frequencies as expected from the geological condition.
