Design features. The vapour booster was introduced in the early 1960s. It is part diffusion pump and part ejector. A typical design is shown in Figure 1. The vertical jet operates in the same way as a diffusion pump, the operation of which is described later, and the horizontal jet is the ejector. At low suction pressures the oil vapour jet stream emerges from the ejector at a wide angle and throttling would occur if the oil vapour were not condensed. When the suction pressure increases, the angle of the vapour jet stream is reduced until when the maximum pumping throughput is reached the jet only impinges near the smallest diameter of the horizontal cone.
