Translating the Intranslatable: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Large Language Models, and the Philosophy of Medical Meaning.
  • Mar 14, 2026
  • The Journal of medical humanities
  • Haiyan Wang + 5 more

The globalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hinges on translation practices that honor its philosophical and relational epistemologies, yet dominant approaches, including those mediated by artificial intelligence (AI), often reduce its holistic frameworks to biomedical equivalents. Terms like qi () or shen () are not merely lexical challenges; they are ontological anchors in a system where the heart (xin, ) governs emotion and moral clarity, and "wind" (feng, ) signifies cosmic disruption. When rendered reductively, whether by human translators or machine algorithms, these concepts risk becoming clinical caricatures, undermining TCM's integrity and therapeutic efficacy. This paper interrogates the epistemic tensions inherent in translating TCM, arguing that AI-driven tools like large language models (LLMs), despite their efficiency, flatten the hermeneutic and cosmological layers that define TCM as a living practice. Where AI sees "syndrome differentiation" (bianzheng, ), TCM perceives a ritualized act of reading harmony and disharmony in pulses, seasons, and bodily metaphors. Such ontological erasures compound historical asymmetries, positioning Western biomedicine as the default lens for interpreting global healing traditions. Rather than rejecting AI outright, this paper proposes a collaborative model where machine translation is guided by TCM practitioners' embodied knowledge and classical textual hermeneutics. By centering human expertise, from pulse diagnosis to the ethical dimensions of shen, translations can resist reductionism and preserve TCM's dynamic worldview. This approach transcends technocratic hegemony to foster intercultural dialogue. Ultimately, the act of translating TCM becomes a site of epistemological justice, demanding technologies that mediate, rather than master, culturally rooted ways of knowing.

Toward post-growth infrastructure: Features, logics, strategies
  • Mar 10, 2026

  • Elisa Schramm + 1 more

Contemporary economic growth relies on infrastructure. However, post-growth scholarship has only recently begun to grapple with infrastructure as a specific object of analysis and often reduces it to little more than a set of barriers to be overcome or a means to essential service provision. This article challenges such limited perspectives by developing a holistic framework through which to understand post-growth infrastructure, how it works and how it can change. Building on the insights of infrastructural analysis conducted in the fields of Science and Technology Studies (STS), geography and anthropology, we advance a relational understanding of post-growth infrastructure, which we define as those that foster social practices that satisfy situated needs, limit consumption and resist capitalist co-optation. Furthermore, we examine the logics that both explain the social dominance of infrastructure and represent pathways for its transformation; that is, as a phenomenon that simultaneously coerces and seduces individuals to adopt certain practices, yet remains suggestive of and open to other uses. We argue that, in order to explain post-growth transformations, post-growth studies must engage with these logics. Finally, we identify strategies for post-growth infrastructural transformation: appropriating growth infrastructure, reconstructing it in line with a post-growth agenda and ensuring its maintenance in the face of capitalist pressures. In this way, our framework represents an important step towards a larger body of research on post-growth infrastructure.

Analysis and Evaluation of the Neuman Systems Model Among Family Caregivers of People With Chronic Diseases.
  • Mar 9, 2026
  • Nursing science quarterly
  • Jeehye Jun + 2 more

The Neuman systems model is a holistic framework consisting of stressors and related reactions that has been applied to family caregivers of people with chronic diseases. Given the lack of recent critique, this study systematically analyzes and evaluates the model according to Fawcett and DeSanto-Madeya's 2013 framework, including examination of its testability and empirical adequacy for family caregivers of people with chronic diseases. Although the model has limited internal consistency and lacks parsimony, it has clear concepts and propositions that reflect the nursing metaparadigm, and it has demonstrated its social and theoretical significance, testability, and empirical and pragmatic adequacy.

Associations between perceived physical literacy and physical fitness tests among the adult population
  • Mar 9, 2026
  • Frontiers in Sports and Active Living
  • Peter Holler + 5 more

Introduction The multidimensional concept of physical literacy (PL) is increasingly recognized as a holistic framework supporting lifelong physical activity. Although research is growing, empirical evidence remains limited and focused mainly on children and adolescents. In adults the relationship between subjectively measured (perceived) PL and objectively measured physical fitness tests is still unclear. The aim of this study was therefore to examine associations between overall and domain-specific perceived PL and multiple components of physical fitness in an adult population. Methods An exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 adults (60% women; mean age 40.71 ± 15.79 years), recruited during community-based physical activity education events in rural Austria. Perceived PL was assessed using the Perceived Physical Literacy Questionnaire (PPLQ), which captures six domains: motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, understanding, and physical activity behavior. Physical fitness was evaluated through a series of field-based tests assessing cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, flexibility of the upper and lower extremities, balance, and reaction time. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated for the total sample and subsamples stratified by gender and age (<45/ ≥ 45 years). In line with the exploratory nature of the study, interpretation focused exclusively on effect sizes following Cohen's conventions. Results Across all fitness parameters, the strongest correlations emerged for overall PL and the physical competence domain, followed by the physical activity behavior and confidence domains. In turn, the weakest correlations were observed for the motivation, knowledge, and understanding domains. Overall, correlations ranged predominantly from small-to-moderate, with notable variation across gender- and age-specific subgroups; in men and younger adults, correlations were generally stronger. Conclusion This study provides new insights into the relationship between overall/domain-specific perceived PL and physical fitness tests in the adult population, particularly regarding less commonly explored fitness parameters such as upper extremity flexibility, reaction time, and balance. Given the exploratory nature of the study, future research with larger, more diverse, and probability-based samples is needed to strengthen both the internal and external validity of these findings.

An Intelligent Real-Time System for Sentence-Level Recognition of Continuous Saudi Sign Language Using Landmark-Based Temporal Modeling.
  • Mar 5, 2026
  • Sensors (Basel, Switzerland)
  • Adel Benabdennour + 4 more

A persistent challenge for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals is the communication gap between sign language users and the hearing community, particularly in regions with limited automated translation resources. In Saudi Arabia, this gap is amplified by the reliance on Saudi Sign Language (SSL) and the scarcity of real-time, sentence-level translation systems. This paper presents a real-time system for sentence-level recognition of continuous SSL and direct mapping to natural spoken Arabic. The proposed system operates end-to-end on live video streams or pre-recorded content, extracting spatio-temporal landmark features using the MediaPipe Holistic framework. For classification, the input feature vector consists of 225 features derived from hand and body pose landmarks. These features are processed by a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network trained on the ArabSign (ArSL) dataset to perform direct sentence-level classification over a vocabulary of 50 continuous Arabic sign language sentences, supported by an idle-based segmentation mechanism that enables natural, uninterrupted signing. Experimental evaluation demonstrates robust generalization: under a Leave-One-Signer-Out (LOSO) cross-validation protocol, the model attains a mean sentence-level accuracy of 94.2%, outperforming the fixed signer-independent split baseline of 92.07%, while maintaining real-time performance suitable for interactive use. To enhance linguistic fluency, an optional post-recognition refinement stage is incorporated using a large language model (LLM), followed by text-to-speech synthesis to produce audible Arabic output; this refinement operates strictly as post-processing and is not included in the reported recognition accuracy metrics. The results demonstrate that direct sentence-level modeling, combined with landmark-based feature extraction and real-time segmentation, provides an effective and practical solution for continuous SSL sentence recognition in real-time.

A Holistic Framework Addressing Psychological, Social, and Health Aspects of Drug Use among University Students
  • Mar 4, 2026
  • Scientific Journal of King Faisal University Humanities and Management Sciences
  • Mashael Huwaikem

This paper examined the psychological, social and nutritional health-related aspects that relate to drug use among higher education students. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study on 1,055 students in various colleges. The data was obtained by using self-administered questionnaire, which measured demographic, psychological, and social variables and nutritional health indicators in terms of drug use. The study identified living alone as a significant demographic predictor in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Positive and neutral attitudes towards drug use (OR = 0.044 and OR = 0.324, respectively), as well as protective or irregular behavioral practices (OR = 0.002) were significantly protective, psychologically. There were no significant differences in nutritional health indicators between users and non-users, but 98 % of the entire population sample had indications of mild malnutrition risk. To conclude, the issue of drug use among university students was more of a psychological and social process rather than a physical and nutritional health issue. Prevention plans are supposed to focus on cognitive and behavioral therapies. Even though drug use has not reached the stage of demonstrating any quantifiable physical health impact, the fact that malnutrition risk is high demonstrates that parallel nutrition-based health promotion interventions are necessary. KEYWORDS Cognitive–behavioral interventions, community influences, malnutrition risk, preventive strategies, psycho-emotional determinants, substance consumption.

  • Mar 3, 2026
  • International Journal of Economic Sciences
  • Kun Zhang + 3 more

The internationalization of the RMB and China's financial opening represent a continuous process of co-evolution. This process is propelled by a mutually reinforcing cycle where institutional supply, market demand, and network effects interact dynamically. The bidirectional synergistic evolution of the two has unleashed significant institutional dividends, yet its deepening process still faces multiple structural constraints. The synergistic advancement of financial opening-up and RMB internationalization necessitates a holistic framework—one that strategically balances risk containment with growth momentum to ensure these processes are mutually reinforcing. This study examines the synergistic pathways and interactive dynamics between financial opening and RMB internationalization. The objective of this paper is to elucidate the intricate relationship between these processes and their strategic implications, thereby formulating a theoretical and policy-oriented framework to support high-level financial opening and enhance the international standing of the RMB.

Cultural Significance of Historic Mountain Roads in the Himalayan Borderlands of India: A Community-Centric Framework for Conservation
  • Feb 28, 2026
  • Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites
  • Samiksha Srichandan + 2 more

ABSTRACT The historic mountain roads of the Himalayan borderlands are a vital yet underappreciated aspect of cultural heritage, embodying centuries of trade, migration, and spiritual exchange. While frameworks like ICOMOS Cultural Routes acknowledge prominent historic roads, those enriched by intangible heritage and community traditions are often overlooked. This research addresses this gap by adopting a community-centred approach to document and preserve the cultural significance of Himalayan roads, prioritising local knowledge. The study highlights ‘Choice Points’ – sites where travellers paused for trade, rest, or rituals – revealing both their tangible and intangible heritage. Fieldwork across the Darma, Byans, and Chaundas valleys shows that while physical markers – shrines, settlements, alpine meadows, sacred lakes – persist, the true essence of these roads lies in the social practices, festivals, and crafts sustained by the Rung Shauka community. To counter threats of modernisation and tourism-driven projects, this research advocates for a holistic conservation framework grounded in community stewardship.

  • Feb 28, 2026
  • African Identities
  • Berhanu Libdi Bekere + 3 more

ABSTRACT The study explores the connection between Nagaa, a term in Oromo language, which is best translated as holistic peace, and jiruuf-jireenya, a concept that embodies the psychological and philosophical foundations of life and relationships within the universe. By examining the relationship between these concepts, the research aims to foster a clearer understanding of holistic peace. The researchers adopted in-depth interviews with elders knowledgeable about Oromo life philosophy and indigenous peace practices. The findings of this study demonstrate that Jiruuf-jireenya has both literal and symbolic interpretations, which can inform a more holistic and relational conceptual framework for peace. The concept is locally understood as an interconnection and roles of various forms of existence play in our universe. Peace maintains the integrity of existence while preserving harmonious relationships among spiritual, living, and non-living entities. Humans play a pivotal role in either exacerbating or resolving conflicts that threaten this equilibrium. This paper argues that Oromo Indigenous worldview of existence and Oromos’ philosophy of life offer a more comprehensive understanding of peace, one that can address the multifaceted challenges facing the world.

Study on the Relationship Between Peer Support and Aesthetic Ability Among University Students in Hebei Province: The Mediating Role of Self-efficacy
  • Feb 28, 2026
  • International Journal of Education and Social Development
  • Dong Xu + 2 more

This study is grounded in the holistic education framework of higher education and focuses on the social and psychological mechanisms underlying the development of university students’ aesthetic ability. It aims to examine the relationships among peer support, self-efficacy, and aesthetic ability, as well as the pathways through which these variables interact. In current practice, aesthetic education in higher education institutions tends to emphasize curricular offerings and extracurricular activities, while insufficient attention has been paid to the roles of peer interaction and psychological factors in the formation of aesthetic ability. Consequently, the underlying mechanisms warrant further empirical investigation. Addressing this gap, the present study takes university students from higher education institutions in Hebei Province as its research sample and proposes three research objectives: to examine the overall levels and characteristics of peer support, self-efficacy, and aesthetic ability; to analyze the interrelationships among these three variables; and to test the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between peer support and aesthetic ability. A quantitative research design was adopted, employing questionnaire surveys and statistical analyses. Stratified random sampling was used to select undergraduate students from different types of universities across Hebei Province. The research instruments included contextually adapted scales measuring peer support, self-efficacy, and aesthetic ability. Specifically, aesthetic ability was conceptualized in terms of aesthetic perception, aesthetic appreciation, and aesthetic creativity, while peer support was operationalized through four dimensions: emotional support, behavioral modeling, informational support and advice, and companionship and supervision. Following data collection, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and Bootstrap mediation tests were conducted. The results indicate that university students in Hebei Province demonstrate moderately high levels of peer support, self-efficacy, and aesthetic ability. Significant positive correlations were found among all three variables, and self-efficacy was shown to play a significant partial mediating role in the relationship between peer support and aesthetic ability. These findings reveal the internal psychological pathways through which peer support influences aesthetic ability and provide empirical evidence for optimizing peer support environments and enhancing aesthetic education practices in higher education. Future research may extend the sample to different regions and cultural contexts and employ longitudinal or experimental designs to further explore the dynamic effects of multiple forms of social support and psychological variables on the development of aesthetic ability.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Efficacy, Cost-Effectiveness, and User Perception for Implementing Automated Attendance Systems in Educational Institutions in Sinaloa, Mexico
  • Feb 27, 2026
  • Technium: Romanian Journal of Applied Sciences and Technology
  • Miguel Angel Montoya Leyva + 3 more

Given the continued use of manual procedures for attendance registration and the persistence of compartmentalized views in the assessment of technological solutions, this work proposes a comprehensive and integrated evaluation of three fundamental axes: technical performance, financial sustainability, and user perception. Based on a systematic review of the academic corpus and the analysis of contextual information regarding the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, it is identified that feasibility depends on the harmonization of these elements. The findings reveal that, in environments subject to budgetary and infrastructural constraints, RFID-based platforms emerge as the most robust and enduring option, notable for their high accuracy, low cost threshold, autonomous operation without permanent connectivity, and a higher degree of acceptance within the educational community. Thus, the central contribution lies in a holistic evaluation framework that transcends partial analyses and provides a contextualized decision-making tool for selecting technologies aligned with the specific conditions of each institution

  • Feb 27, 2026
  • İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi Teknoloji ve Uygulamalı Bilimler Dergisi
  • Hulde Tanriverdi + 1 more

In today's business landscape, sustainable supplier selection has gained strategic significance, not only due to ethical responsibilities but also as a key factor in enhancing competitive advantage and managing long-term risks. Stakeholders such as consumers, investors, and regulatory agencies increasingly expect companies to adopt sustainability principles throughout their supply chains. Consequently, integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria alongside traditional economic indicators has become essential. This study focuses on a large-scale retail organization’s supplier evaluation process by incorporating sustainability-oriented decision-making criteria. Building on a comprehensive literature review, existing evaluation criteria were revised and expanded to include ESG dimensions, forming a holistic framework of 18 sub-criteria across four primary categories: economic, environmental, social, and governance. To determine the importance of these criteria, the Fermatean Fuzzy SWARA method was applied, and supplier alternatives were prioritized using the Fermatean Fuzzy WASPAS technique. The findings provide actionable insights for practitioners seeking to enhance sustainable procurement practices.

  • Feb 25, 2026
  • PeerJ Computer Science
  • Alp Yüksel + 1 more

Recent advancements in multimedia technology have revolutionized digital device interactions, with sign language recognition emerging as a crucial tool for improving accessibility. This article introduces an innovative approach to integrating language-based sign language recognition into multimedia applications, enabling automatic recognition of gestures across various nationalities in dynamic sign language environments (video). Our research explores the potential of this technology to enhance accessibility and usability, particularly for individuals with hearing impairments, by facilitating intuitive and real-time control over video conferencing applications. We identify existing challenges in multimedia applications and propose a novel framework incorporating sign language recognition algorithms. Our approach involves developing a prototype multimedia application designed for fast communication in crowded environments and backgrounds. Feature extraction is performed using the Mediapipe Holistic framework, which captures hand-shoulder distances, finger angles, and finger usage. Gesture classification is achieved using the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm, effectively recognizing international sign language gestures. Additionally, for language and word prediction, we employ Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks (CRNNs) enhanced by Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to process diverse linguistic contexts. Experimental results confirm the robustness of our approach, achieving 89% accuracy in multiclass gesture classification and exceeding 93% accuracy in word prediction across a large, diverse dataset collected from multiple sources and languages. To enhance practical applicability, we integrated our techniques into a custom video conferencing application built with Django. This application seamlessly incorporates our feature extraction and prediction models, offering an innovative, two-way communication platform with improved accessibility features.

A Review of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as a Theoretical Approach to Production Line Improvement
  • Feb 24, 2026
  • Journal of Cultural Analysis and Social Change
  • Ahmed Mohamed Shawky Abdalla + 1 more

This study presented a comprehensive review of Overall Equipment Effectiveness as a theoretical and practical framework for production line improvement, with particular emphasis on the bakery patisserie confectionery industry. Rooted in the principles of Total Productive Maintenance, OEE was examined as an integrative performance measure that combined availability, performance, and quality to identify hidden losses and guide improvement priorities. The review showed that, in multi–stock-keeping unit production environments characterized by frequent changeovers, setup and adjustment losses represented a major constraint on equipment availability and effective capacity utilization. Drawing on empirical and conceptual studies, the research demonstrated that OEE was most effective when it was applied as a diagnostic and improvement-oriented tool rather than as a standalone numerical indicator. The analysis further highlighted the interdependence of the three OEE dimensions, indicating that availability losses often propagated into performance inefficiencies and quality defects, particularly in time-sensitive food manufacturing operations. In addition, the study identified limitations related to inconsistent OEE calculation and interpretation, which reduced its comparability and weakened its role as a driver of continuous improvement. Overall, the findings confirmed that OEE provided a robust and holistic framework for uncovering concealed capacity, reducing reliance on overtime.

Neurobehavioural Group Differences in an Indian Holistic Education Context: Mindfulness, Empathy, Values and Personality Across Gender and Academic Pathways.
  • Feb 23, 2026
  • Annals of neurosciences
  • Mannu Brahmi + 3 more

Holistic education frameworks such as those conceptualising self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-transcendence (S-ART) and the LIBRE/EMC2 model, prioritise the integration of social-emotional-cognitive-spiritual transdisciplinary factors-a focus perennially emphasised in Indian spiritual-philosophical wisdom. The study examines how gender and academic pathways relate to neurobehavioural differences in empathy, values, personality, and mindfulness in Indian university students-a context where these psychosocial, holistic educational factors might be particularly salient. This cross-sectional study involved a behavioural cohort (Sample 1, n = 580) evaluated on empathy (IRI), values (PVQ-RR), personality (IPIP-BFM-50), and mindfulness (FFMQ-39) traits. A neurobehavioural subset (Sample 2, n = 97) participated in a 50-minute Ānāpānasati meditation, during which their state mindfulness was evaluated through self-report (ARSQ). Eighty-nine participants in Sample 2 completed this intervention while undergoing concurrent electroencephalography (EEG) recording. EEG spectral power (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma) was calculated across prefrontal, occipital, and default mode regions, and analysed in relation to state mindfulness, along with significant alpha power-related electrophysiological indices (PAF, COG, F3-F4 Arousal/Valence, Cognitive Workload). Findings indicated that gender contributed significantly to variance in psychosocial holistic educational traits: females demonstrated higher scores in empathy, agreeableness, and self-transcendence-oriented values, while males showed greater emotional stability and a preference for power-dominance values. The university stream (STEM/non-STEM) and early subject choice (science/math in Grade 12th) demonstrated limited explanatory power, exhibiting small effects for certain trait value dimensions. Notably, there were no differences in EEG oscillatory dynamics measured towards state mindfulness across different academic pathways. This study suggested a distinct separation: gender significantly predicted trait-level psychosocial variation, except for trait mindfulness, while state mindfulness exhibited universal neurocognitive accessibility across academic pathways. In the Indian educational context, this supports embedding mindfulness practices throughout educational systems as a plausible, equitable strategy for holistic development and integrating social-emotional learning to promote gender-balanced development.
