A Graded Redox Interfacial Modifier for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells.

Perovskite solar cells have emerged as a potential competitor to the silicon photovoltaic technology. The most representative perovskite cells employ SnO2 and spiro-OMeTAD as the charge-transport materials. Despite their high efficiencies, perovskite cells with such a configuration show unsatisfactory lifespan, normally attributed to the instability of perovskites and spiro-OMeTAD. Limited attention was paid to the influence of SnO2, an inorganic material, on device stability. Here we show that improving SnO2 with a redox interfacial modifier, cobalt hexammine sulfamate, simultaneously enhances the power-conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the perovskite solar cells. Redox reactions between the bivalent cobalt complexes and oxygen lead to the formation of a graded distribution of trivalent and bivalent cobalt complexes across the surface and bulk regions of the SnO2. The trivalent cobalt complex at the top surface of SnO2 raises the concentration of (SO3NH2)- which passivates uncoordinated Pb2+ and relieves tensile stress, facilitating the formation of perovskite with improved crystallinity. Our approach enables perovskite cells with PCEs of up to 24.91%. The devices retained 93.8% of their initial PCEs after 1000 hours of continuous operation under maximum power point tracking. These findings showcase the potential of cobalt complexes as redox interfacial modifiers for high-performance perovskite photovoltaics.

Modulating Dual Functionalities of Hydrazide Derivatives for Iodide Oxidation Suppression and Defect Passivation in Printable Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells

AbstractThe oxidation of iodide ions during annealing in air and rich defects generated at crystal terminations in perovskite are major limitations for achieving high photovoltaic performance in printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p‐MPSCs). Here, the dual role of hydrazide derivatives in inhibiting iodide oxidation and passivating crystal termination defects is reported and how the dual role is affected by the substituent is studied. It's found that varying the hydrazide derivative from formylhydrazine (FH) to benzhydrazide (BH) and then to 4‐tert‐butylbenzhydrazide (TBBH) by introducing phenyl and 4‐tert‐butylphenyl substituents enhances the electron donating ability of hydrazides due to substituent electronic effect. The tailored hydrazides present enhanced iodide oxidation suppression and defect passivation capabilities, which lowers the trap density of perovskite in p‐MPSCs significantly. As the most effective additive, TBBH improves the power conversion efficiency of the p‐MPSC from 18.66% to 20.30%, and the resulted device maintains 90% of its initial efficiency after 500 h tacking at maximum power point at 55 ± 5 °C under simulated 1 sun illumination.

Low-Cost, Scalable Fabrication of Multi-Dimensional Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules Assisted by Mechanical Scribing.

The performance and scalability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on 3D formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) absorber are often hindered by defects at the surface and grain boundaries of the perovskite. To address this, the study demonstrates the use of pyrrolidinium iodide for the in situ formation of an energetically aligned 1D pyrrolidinium lead triiodide (PyPbI3) capping layer over the 3D FAbI3 perovskite. The thermodynamically stable PyPbI3 perovskitoids, formed through cation exchange reactions, effectively reduce surface and grain boundary defects in the FAPbI3 perovskite. In addition to improved phase stability, the resulting 1D/3D perovskite film forms a cascade energy band alignment with the other functional layers in PSCs, enabling a barrier-free interfacial charge transport. With a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ≈23.1% and ≈20.7% at active areas of 0.09 and 1.05 cm2, respectively, the 1D/3D PSCs demonstrate excellent performance and scalability. Leveraging this improved scalability, the study has successfully developed a mechanically-scribed 1D/3D perovskite mini-module with an unprecedentedly high PCE of ≈20.6% and a total power output of ≈270mW at an active area of ≈13.0 cm2. The 1D/3D multi-dimensional perovskite film developed herein holds great promise for producing low-cost, high-performance perovskite photovoltaics at both the cell and module levels.

Design and modification thienonaphthalimides based non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells with high photovoltaic performance in visible light absorption range

Herein, we theoretically designed and characterized eight new thienonaphthalimides-based non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) materials (MT1–MT8) derived from 1ad molecule for organic solar cells (OSCs) devices. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory were used to perform theoretical characters of all molecules. All computational analysis were successfully done at mPW1PW91/6-31g(d,p) DFT level. Compared with R (3.25 eV), MT4 showed better planarity and narrower band gap of 2.470 eV. A relatively lower excitation energy (2.039 eV) and binding energy (0.431 eV) were also found in MT4. Meanwhile, molecular electrostatic potential, transition density matrix and hole-electron analyses proved that MT4 had better photovoltaic and photophysical properties than R. We also designed J52-Cl:MT4 blend compound to study the charge transfer behavior at the interface which shown successful shift of electrons from donor to acceptor. Therefore, our newly designed molecules have the potential of being good NFAs for efficient OSC devices.

Making a benign buried bottom interface for high-performance perovskite photovoltaics with a chelating molecule

Interfacial modifications can significantly enhance the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We introduced an auxiliary chelating agent, 5,6-isopropyridine-L-ascorbic acid (ILAA), to modify the SnO2/perovskite buried interface. By a non-destructive peeling process using a UV epoxy glue, we exposed the buried bottom of the perovskite layer for direct examination. ILAA not only suppressed SnO2 defects and hydroxyl oxygen but also prevented deterioration of the buried bottom of the perovskite layer. Theoretical calculations also confirmed the greater competitiveness of ILAA in interacting with perovskite molecules than dimethyl sulfoxide. The introduction of ILAA optimized the energy band structure of the SnO2-perovskite interface, therefore enhanced the built-in electric field and facilitated efficient charge transfer. Consequently, ILAA-modified PSCs achieved power conversion efficiencies of 24.04 % and 19.10 % for microdevices (0.09 cm2) and modules (19.32 cm2), respectively. These unencapsulated devices exhibited excellent humidity and thermal stability, maintaining over 80 % of their initial performances after being aged in air for 1000 h or continuously heated for 500 h.

Novel D–π–A dye as a co-sensitizer of indoline and benzothiadiazole dyes to enhance photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells

A novel D–π–A type of dye (BIM33) comprising diphenylamine as electron donor, diphenylacridine as a π-bridge and cyanoacrylic acid as an anchoring unit has been synthesized and used as sensitizer and co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSC based on BIM33 achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.19 % under one sun (AM 1.5G). To improve the photovoltaic performance of the DSSCs, this orange dye was also co-sensitized with red benzothiadiazole (C1) and purple indoline (D205) organic dyes. The DSSCs based on co-sensitizers BIM33/D205 and BIM33/C1 showed superior PCEs of 6.57 % (JSC = 13.69 mA cm−2, VOC = 0.766 V, and FF = 0.63) and 6.82 % (JSC = 14.47 mA cm−2, VOC = 0.722 V, and FF = 0.65), respectively, exhibiting significant improvements of 28 % and 36 % compared to the DSSCs based on D205 and C1, respectively. The high photovoltaic performance of the co-sensitized DSSCs may be explained by the broader visible light absorption and a denser packing of the dyes on the TiO2 surface.

New hole transport materials based on polybenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene polymers with different side chains for n-i-p perovskite solar cells

A series of new homo- and copolymers P1–P6 with the main chains comprised exclusively of benzo [1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene units were synthesized using Stille polycondensation reaction. The optical and electrochemical properties of P1–P6 polymers were studied to estimate the frontier orbitals energies and the Eg values. The obtained data demonstrate the possibility of controlling the electronic properties of polybenzo [1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophenes by varying only the structure and combinations of solubilizing alkyl side chains. The polymers P1–P6 were evaluated as hole transport materials in n-i-p perovskite solar cells. The highest efficiency of 18.6 % was delivered by the cells with one of the designed polymers with an optimal combination of alternating mono- and dialkylthiophene substituents. The high photovoltaic performance and decent operational stability were achieved using polymer films without any doping, which paves a way to design of inexpensive and scalable dopant-free materials for perovskite solar cells.

Enhanced Performance of Polymer Solar Cells by Ultraviolet-Ozone Treatment of MoOX Films with non-Thermal Annealing Treatment of MoOX Films

Molybdenum oxide (MoOX) is a commonly used hole extraction material (HEL) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, we perform ultraviolet ozone treatment (UVO, non-thermal annealing treatment) on MoOX film (by spin-coated (NH4)6Mo7O24-4H2O solution on the ITO top) prepared by solution processing to develop hole extraction materials for efficient PSC. After UVO treatment of MoOX films (US-MoOX), the (NH4)6Mo7O24-4H2O molecules decompose to form a denser and higher energy levels MoOX film. Compared with E-MoOX films (vacuum evaporated MoO3 powder), US-MoOX films have similar square resistance and electrical conductivity to E-MoOX films, and the photovoltaic performance of US-MoOX-based PSCs is comparable to that of E-MoOX-based PSCs and higher than that of PEDOT:PSS-based PSCs. Therefore, US-MoOX-based PSCs show the advantages of combining high photovoltaic performance with solution processing. In addition, US-MoOX-based PSCs have the advantage of not requiring thermal annealing treatment. The results indicate that US-MoOX films are promising HEL materials for the practical production of PSCs.

Molecular Engineering Strategies of Spectral Matching and Structure Optimization for Efficient Metal-Free Organic Dyes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: A Theoretical Study.

Metal-free organic dyes are promising dyes that can be applied widely in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The rational design and selection of dyes with complementary absorption can promote the development of methods that can enhance the utilization of incident light by DSSCs, such as cosensitization and tandem devices. Based on these opinions, the structure of the reported high-performance metal-free organic dye ZL003 is used as a template to design two new metal-free organic dyes, HX-1 and HX-2, by replacing its donor unit with a 2-phenothiazine-phenylamine unit and fusing its three independent π-bridge units into a whole with the aim of driving the red shift and the blue shift of the absorption spectra of ZL003, respectively. Through theoretical investigation, it is demonstrated that the perfect complementary optical absorption of HX-1 and HX-2 can be realized as the shift of the absorption spectra of ZL003 to different directions, which means their feasibility to the application in cosensitization or tandem dye-sensitized solar cells (T-DSSCs). Furthermore, it is hypothesized that HX-1 may be the dye with better photovoltaic performance than ZL003 by modeling their intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) processes, TiO2 surface adsorption, and photovoltaic parameters. The short-circuit current density (Jsc) and photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of HX-1 are 23.10 mA·cm-2 and 21.26% in theory, compared to those of 20.68 mA·cm-2 and 19.64% in ZL003 at the same computational level, respectively. In view of the complementary optical properties, the combination of HX-1 with HX-2 may be a reasonable option for dyes for the development of a highly efficient cosensitization system or T-DSSCs in the future. In terms of such findings, these two novel metal-free organic dyes may have bright prospects in the research of highly efficient DSSCs, and this work can provide a reference for the design of dyes with complementary absorption through simple structural adjustments of the realistic dyes with high photovoltaic performance.

Aqueous PEIE Soaking on ZnO for Ultraviolet Light Activation-Free Organic Photovoltaic Modules.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is typically needed to activate inverted organic photovoltaics (OPVs) with zinc oxide (ZnO) as electron transporting layer (ETL)for higher efficiency. However, UV light is a major cause for the degradation of organic active layers in OPVs. This is a contradiction that UV light activation enhances the efficiency but UV illumination deteriorates the stability. It is important to solve this contradiction to develop UV light activation-free OPV devices. Herein, a method of aqueous polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) soaking on ZnO is reported to realize UV light activation-free OPV devices. The S-shape in current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics of devices tested without UV light activation is eliminated through the treatment of aqueous PEIE soaking on ZnO. The treatment reduces the oxygen adsorbates, which is confirmed by Kelvin probe and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A 10.08 cm2 organic photovoltaic module with the treated ZnO asETL showed high photovoltaic performance: VOC = 5.68 V, JSC = 2.7 mAcm-2, FF = 75.1%, and POutput = 11.5 mWcm-2 tested with the UV filter (light intensity of 0.788 sun). UV light activation is not needed for the modules to obtain high efficiency.

Modulating perovskite crystallization and band alignment using coplanar molecules for high-performance indoor photovoltaics

The proper bandgap and exceptional photostability enable CsPbI3 as a potential candidate for indoor photovoltaics (IPVs), but indoor power conversion efficiency (PCE) is impeded by serious nonradiative recombination stemming from challenges in incomplete DMAPbI3 conversion and lattice structure distortion. Here, the coplanar symmetric structure of hexyl sulfide (HS) is employed to functionalize the CsPbI3 layer for fabricating highly efficient IPVs. The hydrogen bond between HS and DMAI promotes the conversion of DMAPbI3 to CsPbI3, while the coplanar symmetric structure enhances crystalline order. Simultaneously, surface sulfidation during HS-induced growth results in the in situ formation of PbS, spontaneously creating a CsPbI3 N-P homojunction to enhance band alignment and carrier mobility. As a result, the CsPbI3&HS devices achieve an impressive indoor PCE of 39.90% (Pin: 334.6 μW cm−2, Pout: 133.5 μW cm−2) under LED@2968 K, 1062 lux, and maintain over 90% initial PCE for 800 h at ∼30% air ambient humidity.

Adsorbates Engineering on ZnO for Ultraviolet Light Activation–free Organic Photovoltaic Modules

Ultraviolet (UV) light is typically needed to activate inverted organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices with zinc oxide (ZnO) as electron transporting layer (ETL) for enhanced efficiency. Given that UV light may cause the degradation of active layers and interfaces, and considering the absence of UV light in typical indoor lighting, addressing the need of UV light activation for ZnO becomes paramount. Herein, we report the engineering of adsorbates on ZnO could solve this issue by increasing the annealing temperature and changing the recipe of ZnO. Increasing the content of O 1s at binding energy of 531 eV on ZnO in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy would be beneficial to alleviate the need of UV light activation. For the (ZnO)PEIE (zinc acetate dihydrate (ZAH) and polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) dissolved in 2‐methoxyethanol, PEIE used to provide amine in the precursor), annealing at 180 °C would eliminated S‐shape in the current density‐voltage (J‐V) characteristics without UV light activation. For traditional recipe of (ZnO)EA (ZAH and ethanolamine dissolved in 2‐methoxyethanol, ethanolamine used to provide amine in the precursor), annealing at 320 °C following by additional 0.1 wt% aqueous PEIE modification could reach the similar effect to the (ZnO)PEIE. OPV modules (9.8 cm2) with 180 °C annealed (ZnO)PEIE as ETL showed high photovoltaic performance under light conditions without UV: VOC = 4.73 V JSC = 16.3 μA/cm2, FF = 67.9% and PCE = 18.2% under LED (2700 K) condition at 1000 lux (light intensity of 288 μW/cm2); VOC = 5.76 V JSC = 2.8 mA/cm2, FF = 72.1% and PCE = 14.8% tested under 1 sun with the UV filter (light intensity of 0.788 sun). Achieving high photovoltaic performance in graphene/AlGaAs/GaAs Schottky junction solar cells by incorporating an InAlGaP hole reflector layer

The purpose of this study is to enhance the efficiency of Graphene/AlGaAs/GaAs Schottky junction solar cells by introducing various Ga-based thin-film materials as a hole reflector (HR) layer. These HR layers are designed to minimize the recombination rate at the back contact and increase the photogeneration rate. In order to investigate the effect of various HR layers on the efficiency of GaAs solar cells, a reference cell was simulated with an efficiency of 14%. The simulation was conducted using the Silvaco ATLAS simulator, under AM1.5G light with a power density of 100 mW/cm2. Subsequently, InAlGaP (InAl0.65Ga0.35P), AlGaAs (Al0.2Ga0.8As), and InGaP (In0.5Ga0.5P) thin films were individually introduced as HR layers to the Graphene/AlGaAs/GaAs single junction solar cell (SJSC). The addition of HR layers to the conventional Graphene/AlGaAs/GaAs Schottky junction solar cell was found to improve the short-circuit current density (Jsc) by enhancing carrier collection and reducing back interface recombination. This approach has also led to a significant increase in external quantum efficiency (EQE) at long wavelengths of around 500–900 nm. The results of this study demonstrate that incorporating an InAlGaP HR layer in the proposed structure due to its wide bandgap, higher photogeneration rate, and higher absorption rate significantly improves the EQE by absorbing longer wavelength photons and increases the efficiency of the solar cell by more than 1.6%.

Design of non-fused ring electron acceptors with “embracing-type” side chains for organic solar cells

Backbone planarity is an inherent structural feature for fused ring electron acceptors and one of important prerequisites for their high photovoltaic performance. However, for non-fused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs), it is a challenging task to achieve it. In this work, two NFREAs (Ph2TIC and BT2TIC) containing thiophene-benzene-thiophene or thiophene-benzothiadiazole-thiophene three non-fused aromatic rings in central scaffold were designed with an attempt to use a pair of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl substituents (referred as “embracing”-type side chains) at 3,3′-positions of the two thiophene units to lock the backbone in a planar conformation. X-ray crystallography revealed that Ph2TIC has a quasi-planar backbone, whereas BT2TIC shows a twisted one, but both tend to form two-dimensional layered arrays through intermolecular π-π stacking involving terminal acceptor moieties. UV–vis light-absorption spectroscopy showed that both compounds have similar optoelectronic properties either in dilute solutions or in solid film state, thus confirming the conformation-lock function of the “embracing”-type side chains. While for photophysical properties, BT2TIC displays a red-shifted broader light absorption spectrum as compared to Ph2TIC due to the introduction of an additional acceptor moiety in the structure. Ph2TIC and BT2TIC were evaluated as the acceptor materials in organic solar cells in combination with PM6, a typical donor polymer, and delivered the optimized power conversion efficiencies of 4.31 % and 3.78 %, respectively. Although the photovoltaic performances are modest, the work provides a new thought for maintaining the backbone planarity in NFREAs and would be useful in their future design.

Unveiling the Potential of Two-Terminal Perovskite/Organic Tandem Solar Cells: Mechanisms, Status, and Challenges.

Perovskite/organic tandem solar cells (PO-TSCs) demonstrate exceptional suitability for emerging applications such as building-integrated photovoltaics, wearable devices, and greenhouse farming. By leveraging the distinctive attributes of perovskite and organic materials, which encompass expanded solar spectrum utilization, chemically benign solubility, and soft nature, PO-TSCs position themselves as ideal candidates for high-performance semi-transparent photovoltaics (ST-PVs). Despite these advantages, their development significantly lags behind other perovskite-based counterparts, such as perovskite/perovskite, perovskite/silicon, and perovskite/Cu(In, Ga)Se2. To address existing challenges and unlock the full potential of PO-TSCs, an exploration of the fundamental mechanisms governing tandem photovoltaic devices is embarked. Delving into critical aspects such as charge generation/separation, energy level alignment, and material choices becomes pivotal for optimizing PO-TSC performance. The investigation of monolithic two-terminal PO-TSCs offers insights into achievements and barriers, recognizing the competitive landscape with other TSC counterparts. Further scrutiny of perovskite absorbers and organic absorbers in TSCs reveals strategies aimed at enhancing stability and efficiency. The discussion extends to interconnection layers, elucidating their role in optimizing light transmission and balancing carrier recombination. In conclusion, a compelling outlook on the dynamic landscape of PO-TSCs is presented, highlighting the remarkable efficiency progression and signaling their potential to revolutionize solar energy harvesting technologies.

Efficient Intersystem Crossing in Extended Helical Perylene Diimide Dimers with Chalcogen-Annulation.

The properties and formation mechanisms of the triplet state have been widely investigated since they are crucial intermediates in photo functional devices. Specifically, helical PDI dimers, horizontal expanded π-conjugated derivatives of PDI, have shown outstanding performance as electron acceptors in enhancing the performance of photovoltaics. Therefore, the exploration of triplet generation in helical PDI dimers plays a crucial role in understanding the mechanisms and excavating their further application. We make use of Se-annulation to induce intersystem crossing (ISC) in helical PDI dimers and further explore the triplet evolution process systematically as the number of Se atoms increases by transient absorption spectroscopy and the hole-electron analysis method. It shows that the twisted molecular conformation has paved the way for potential ISC in a parent molecule PDI2. The incorporation of Se atoms can result in evident promotion in the efficiency of ISC (ϕTPDI2-2Se = 96.9%) compared to the parent molecule PDI2 (ϕTPDI2 = 26.5%), indicating that chalcogen-annulation is also an efficient strategy in a π-extended system. Our results provide useful insights for understanding the triplet evolution process, which can help broaden the application of the π-extended PDI system into high-performance photovoltaics.

Flexible Indoor Perovskite Solar Cells by In Situ Bottom-Up Crystallization Modulation and Interfacial Passivation.

A robust perovskite-buried interface is pivotal for achieving high-performance flexible indoor photovoltaics as it significantly influences charge transport and extraction efficiency. Herein, a molecular bridge strategy is introduced utilizing sodium 2-cyanoacetate (SZC) additive at the perovskite-buried interface to simultaneously achieve in situ passivation of interfacial defects and bottom-up crystallization modulation, resulting in high-performance flexible indoor photovoltaic applications. Supported by both theoretical calculations and experimental evidences, it illustrates how SZCs serve as molecular bridges, establishing robust bonds between SnO2 transport layer and perovskite, mitigating oxygen vacancy defects and under-coordinated Pb defects at interface during flexible fabrication. This, in turn, enhances interfacial energy level alignment and facilitates efficient carrier transport. Moreover, this in situ investigation of perovskite crystallization dynamics reveals bottom-up crystallization modulation, extending perovskite growth at the buried interface and influencing subsequent surface recrystallization. This results in larger crystalline grains and improved lattice strain of the perovskite during flexible fabrication. Finally, the optimized flexible solar cells achieve an impressive efficiency exceeding 41% at 1000 lux, with a fill factor as high as 84.32%. The concept of the molecular bridge represents a significant advancement in enhancing the performance of perovskite-based flexible indoor photovoltaics for the upcoming era of Internet of Things (IoT).

Effect of Position of Donor Units and Alkyl Groups on Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Device Performance: Indoline-Aniline Donor-Based Visible Light Active Unsymmetrical Squaraine Dyes.

Indoline (In) and aniline (An) donor-based visible light active unsymmetrical squaraine (SQ) dyes were synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where the position of An and In units was changed with respect to the anchoring group (carboxylic acid) to have In-SQ-An-CO2H and An-SQ-In-CO2H sensitizers, AS1-AS5. Linear or branched alkyl groups were functionalized with the N atom of either In or An units to control the aggregation of the dyes on TiO2. AS1-AS5 exhibit an isomeric π-framework where the squaric acid unit is placed in the middle, where AS2 and AS5 dyes possess the anchoring group connected with the An donor, and AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes having the anchoring group connected with the In donor. Hence, the conjugation between the middle squaric acid acceptor unit and the anchoring -CO2H group is short for AS2, AS5, and AK2 and longer for AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes. AS dyes showed absorption between 501 and 535 nm with extinction coefficients of 1.46-1.61 × 105 M-1 cm-1. Further, the isomeric π-framework of An-SQ-In-CO2H and In-SQ-An-CO2H exhibited by means of changing the position of In and An units a bathochromic shift in the absorption properties of AS2 and AS5 compared to the AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes. The DSSC device fabricated with the dyes contains short acceptor-anchoring group distance (AS2 and AS5) showed high photovoltaic performances compared to the dyes having longer distance (AS1, AS3, and AS4) with the iodolyte (I-/I3-) electrolyte. DSSC device efficiencies of 5.49, 6.34, 6.16, and 5.57% have been achieved for AS1, AS2, AS3, and AS4 dyes, respectively; without chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), small changes have been observed in the device performance of the AS dyes with CDCA. Significant changes have been noted in the DSSC parameters (open-circuit voltage VOC, short-circuit current JSC, fill factor ff, and efficiency η) for the AS5 dye while sensitized with CDCA and showed highest DSSC efficiency of 8.01% in the AS dye series. This study revealed the potential of shorter SQ acceptor-anchoring group distance over the longer one and the importance of alkyl groups on the overall DSSC device performance for the unsymmetrical squaraine dyes.

Mediation of Interfacial Mo2C Bridging Effect in MoS2@Carbon Colloid Dots Featuring Improved Photovoltaic Performances of Si‐Based Hybrid Solar Cells

AbstractAdvances in silicon‐based hybrid solar cells with high photovoltaic performance, low synthetic cost, and sound environmental resistance are emerged as potential candidate for solar conversion. Solution‐processed few‐layer MoS2 sheets are regarded as compelling constitutes that paves ways for tailoring the solar harvesting capability; yet the improvement on charge separation of photoexcited carriers remains demanded, and the lack of environmental stability due to intentionally grabbing electrons from adsorbed moistures constrains the scope of practical assessment. In this work, the employment of MoS2/Mo2C/carbon colloid dots (CCDs) heterostructures within PEDOT:PSS matrix is invoked, where the transfer of photoexcited electrons from MoS2 is mediated with Mo2C electron‐transport channels, which further couple out the creation of positive trions by combining with defect‐bound excitons at CCD surfaces. These features dynamically involve with slow recombination probability and further improve the photovoltaic gain. Thus, the noticeable improvement of conversion efficiency of 16.1% with 1.6 times of efficiency enhancement outperforming the bare conventional hybrid solar cells is accomplished, and further exhibits a sound long‐term stability, which opens new avenues for exploiting the photophysical bound‐carrier transition on advanced photovoltaic applications.

CdS/CdSe/PbS quantum dots sensitized TiO2 eggshell hollow microspheres photoanode to boost photocurrent and power conversion efficiency of QDSSC

Light harvesting plays crucial role for high photovoltaic performance of quantum dots sensitized solar cell (QDSSC). However, there are still issues need to be tackled, such as enlarging light response range and enhancing light scattering capability. In this work, TiO2 eggshell hollow microspheres (EHMS) were synthesized by carbonaceous microspheres (CMS) template method and co-sensitized by CdS/CdSe/PbS quantum dots (QDs) for application in QDSSC. Compared with QDSSC based on TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) and TiO2 hollow microspheres (HMS), the TiO2 EHMS based QDSSC showed a remarkable increase of short-circuit current density (Jsc) to 24.81 mA cm−2 with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.07 %. Photoelectrochemical analysis of QDSSC indicate that CdS/CdSe/PbS QDs can enlarge the light response range, and the TiO2 EHMS improve the light scattering, leading to the improvement of light harvesting efficiency. Charges dynamics tests results proved that a larger charges recombination resistance at photoanode/electrolyte interface and longer electron lifetime can be achieved with TiO2 EHMS, contributing to the boost of Jsc. The presented study introduces a simple strategy for researchers interested in designing photoanode for various photoelectrochemical applications.
