Design of Highly Electrophilic and Stable Metal Nitrido Complexes.

ConspectusMetal oxo (M═O) and nitrido (M≡N) complexes are two important classes of high-valent transition metal complexes. The use of M═O as oxidants in chemical and biological systems has been extensively investigated. Nature makes use of M═O in enzymes such as cytochrome P450 to oxidize a variety of substrates. Highly oxidizing oxo species have also been synthesized and they have been shown to oxidize organic and inorganic substrates via one-electron oxidation, O atom transfer, and H atom abstraction pathways. In contrast, the oxidation chemistry of M≡N is much less investigated. Although a variety of nitrido complexes are known, most of them are inert and do not show appreciable oxidizing properties, which is not unexpected since the N3- ligand is much more electron-donating than the O2- ligand. In principle, highly electrophilic/oxidizing nitrido complexes may be designed by using weakly coordinating ancillary ligands and/or by increasing the oxidation state of the metal centers. A number of such species have been generated in solution at low temperatures. However, attempts to isolate them are often hampered by their ease of decomposition via bimolecular N···N coupling to generate N2. In some cases, decomposition occurs by intramolecular nitrogenation of the ancillary ligand.In this account, we describe our recent efforts into the design of nitrido complexes that are highly oxidizing but stable enough so they can be isolated and characterized, and their reactivity toward organic substrates can be readily investigated.We have successfully isolated and determined the structure of the first stable manganese(VI) nitrido complex bearing an oxidation-resistant macrocyclic tetraamido TAML ligand, [MnVI(N)(TAML)]- (H4TAML = 3,3,6,6,9,9-hexamethyl-3,4,8,9-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[e][1,4,7,10] tetraazacyclotridecine-2,5,7,10(6H,11H)-tetraone). This complex readily undergoes direct aziridination of alkenes; it also abstracts hydrides from NADH analogues via a Separated CPET mechanism. Coupling of the nitrido ligands to give dinitrogen is a major decomposition pathway for electrophilic nitrido complexes. In order to shut down this pathway, we made use of a bulky trianionic corrole ligand TTPPC (H3TTPPC = 5,10,15-tris(2,4,6-triphenylphenyl)corrole) to prepare manganese nitrido complexes. Remarkably, we were able to isolate and determine the structures of [MnV(N)(TTPPC)]- and its one- and two-electron ligand-oxidized products, [MnV(N)(TTPPC+•)] and [MnV(N)(TTPPC2+)]+ ("TTPPC" has a 3- charge, 'TTPPC+•' has an overall 2- charge and 'TTPPC2+' has an overall 1- charge). Although [MnV(N)(TTPPC2+)]+ is formally a manganese(V) complex, it was found to be the most electrophilic among isolated metal nitrido complexes. The use of the bulky corrole ligand effectively prevents the decomposition of Mn≡N by N···N coupling.A number of luminescent M═O species that possess highly oxidizing excited states are known. We have also developed a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complex, [OsVI(N)(L)(CN)3]- (OsN, HL = 2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)benzoxazole), that absorbs visible light to generate a highly oxidizing/electrophilic excited state. The excited state readily reacts with a wide variety of organic and inorganic substrates, many of these reactions are unprecedented. Notably, it reacts with cyclohexane to give an osmium(IV) cyclohexyliminato product, and with benzene to give an osmium(IV) p-benzoquinone iminato species.

Prussian blue analogues-derived zero valent iron to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for phenol degradation triggered via reactive oxygen species and high-valent iron-oxo complexes

It is of great significance to develop the effective technique to treat phenol-containing wastewater. Herein, Fe-based prussian blue analogues-derived zero valent iron (ZVI) was successfully synthesized by one-step calcination method. Owing to high specific surface area and rich active sites, ZVI-2 possessed excellent performance in charge transfer. Notably, in comparison with conventional ZVI and Fe2+, ZVI-2 can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for achieving rapid degradation of phenol, and the highest removal efficiency of phenol reached 94.9% within 24 min. More importantly, developed ZVI-2/PMS oxidation system with good stability displayed strong anti-interference capability. Interestingly, Fe0 loaded on the surface of ZVI-2 can efficiently break the O–O bond of PMS to generate reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO4•−, OH•, O2•− and 1O2). As main adsorption sites of PMS, the existence of oxygen vacancy promote the formation of high-valent transition metal complexes (namely ZVI-2≡Fe4+=O). Under the combined action of reactive oxygen species and ZVI-2≡Fe4+=O, phenol can be eventually degraded into CO2 and H2O. The possible degradation pathways of phenol were also investigated. Furthermore, proposed ZVI-2/PMS oxidation system displayed great potential for application in the field of wastewater treatment. All in all, current work provided a valuable reference for design and application of Fe-based catalysts in PS-AOPs.

Rational regulation of peroxymonosulfate activation over porous Co3O4 with carbon coating to boost utilization efficiency of peroxymonosulfate and achieve rapid removal of pollutants

It is of great significance to regulate rationally the activation mechanism of persulfate for promoting the development of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes in wastewater treatment. Herein, carbon coated porous Co3O4 with hollow structure was synthesized. Notably, the formation of porous hollow structure improved specific surface area of Co3O4 and offered more redox couples of Co2+/Co3+, thereby reducing electron transfer resistance. Thus, the generation of reactive oxygen species and the role of high-valent transition metal complexes (namely Co3O4Co4+) were improved. The formation of carbon layer on the Co3O4 surface can avoid the release of Co ion during reaction process. Benefiting from the role of carbon layer in electron transport, catalyst-mediated the direct electron transfer from pollutant to PMS was boosted. Radical and nonradical pathways worked in coordination each other and realized the rapid removal of various organic pollutants in the presence of a little PMS. In short, current work revealed that modulating rationally the microstructure of catalyst was an efficient strategy for achieving controllable regulation of PMS activation process. More significantly, whether the direct electron transfer process can occur or not depended on both catalyst structure and electronic density of pollutants.

DFT study on mechanism of carbonyl hydrosilylation catalyzed by high-valent molybdenum (IV) hydrides

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been employed to investigate hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds catalyzed by three high-valent molybdenum (VI) hydrides: Mo(NAr)H(Cp)(PMe3) (1A), Mo(NAr)H(PMe3)3 (1B), and Mo(NAr)H (Tp)(PMe3) (Tp = tris(pyrazolyl) borate) (1C). Three independent mechanisms have been explored. The first mechanism is “carbonyl insertion pathway”, in which the carbonyls insert into Mo−H bond to give a metal alkoxide complex. The second mechanism is the “ionic hydrosilylation pathway”, in which the carbonyls nucleophilically attacks η1-silane molybdenum adduct. The third mechanism is [2 + 2] addition mechanism which was proposed to be favorable for the high-valent di-oxo molybdenum complex MoO2Cl2 catalyzing the hydrosilylation. Our studies have identified the “carbonyl insertion pathway” to be the preferable pathway for three molybdenum hydrides catalyzing hydrosilylation of carbonyls. For Mo(NAr)H (Tp)(PMe3) (Tp = tris(pyrazolyl) borate), the proposed nonhydride mechanism experimentally is calculated to be more than 32.6 kcal/mol higher than the “carbonyl insertion pathway”. Our calculation results have derived meaningful mechanistic insights for the high-valent transition metal complexes catalyzing the reduction reaction.

New insights into hydrosilylation of unsaturated carbon-heteroatom (C═O, C═N) bonds by rhenium(V)-dioxo complexes.

The hydrosilylation of unsaturated carbon-heteroatom (C═O, C═N) bonds catalyzed by high-valent rhenium(V)-dioxo complex ReO2I(PPh3)2 (1) were studied computationally to determine the underlying mechanism. Our calculations revealed that the ionic outer-sphere pathway in which the organic substrate attacks the Si center in an η(1)-silane rhenium adduct to prompt the heterolytic cleavage of the Si-H bond is the most energetically favorable process for rhenium(V)-dioxo complex 1 catalyzed hydrosilylation of imines. The activation energy of the turnover-limiting step was calculated to be 22.8 kcal/mol with phenylmethanimine. This value is energetically more favorable than the [2 + 2] addition pathway by as much as 10.0 kcal/mol. Moreover, the ionic outer-sphere pathway competes with the [2 + 2] addition mechanism for rhenium(V)-dioxo complex 1 catalyzing the hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds. Furthermore, the electron-donating group on the organic substrates would induce a better activity favoring the ionic outer-sphere mechanistic pathway. These findings highlight the unique features of high-valent transition-metal complexes as Lewis acids in activating the Si-H bond and catalyzing the reduction reactions.

Stable gold(III) catalysts by oxidative addition of a carbon-carbon bond.

Whereas low-valent late transition metal catalysis has become indispensible for chemical synthesis, homogeneous high-valent transition metal catalysis is underdeveloped, mainly due to the reactivity of high-valent transition metal complexes and the challenges associated with synthesizing them. In this manuscript, we report a mild carbon-carbon bond cleavage reaction by a Au(I) complex that generates a stable Au(III) cationic complex. Complementary to the well-established soft and carbophilic Au(I) catalyst, this Au(III) complex exhibits hard, oxophilic Lewis acidity. This is exemplified by catalytic activation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes towards selective conjugate additions as well as activation of an unsaturated aldehyde-allene for a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. The origin of the regioselectivity and catalytic activity was elucidated by X-ray crystallographic analysis of an isolated Au(III)-activated cinnamaldehyde intermediate. The concepts revealed in this study provide a strategy for accessing high-valent transition metal catalysis from readily available precursors.

Transition metal spin state energetics and noninnocent systems: challenges for DFT in the bioinorganic arena

Although density functional theory (DFT) provides a generally good description of transition metal systems, we have identified several cases, involving Fe(III) porphyrins and related systems, where common functionals fail to correctly describe the energetics of the different low-lying spin states. The question of metal- versus ligand-centered oxidation in high-valent transition metal complexes is also a challenging one for DFT calculations, as I have tried to illustrate with examples from among porphyrin, corrole, biliverdine, and NO complexes. In a number of cases, I have compared results obtained with different exchange-correlation functionals; in addition, I have added a discussion on the relative performance of pure versus hybrid functionals. Finally, I have offered some thoughts on the role that traditional wavefunction-based ab initio methods, now essentially absent from the bioinorganic arena, might play in the future.

Alcohol oxidation with dioxygen mediated by oxotitanium porphyrin and related transition metal complexes

Oxotitanium porphyrin ( TTP ) Ti = O and related transition metal complexes were shown to catalyze the oxidation of alcohols using dioxygen as the oxidant. Vicinal diols were cleaved to carbonyl compounds in the presence of catalytic amounts of ( TTP ) Ti = O , ( TTP ) V = O or ( Saldach ) V = O . α-Hydroxy ketones were oxidized to α-diketones with ( TTP ) Ti = O . Benzyl alcohol was converted to benzaldehyde in modest to high yields by a number of high valent transition metal complexes. Reaction pathways for the transformations mediated by ( TTP ) Ti = O are discussed. Formation of diolato and enediolato complexes is believed to be the key step in the diol cleavage and α-hydroxy ketone oxidation, respectively.

Bonding modelsfor d0complexes are invariably more complicated than for main group compounds due to the complicated dependence of in-plane and out-of-plane π-components on bond angles in the former. The figure shows the “inverse Bent's rule structure” of TiCl2(CH3)2, (compared with the “regular structure” for SiCl2(CH3)2). In contrast to previous work, this is found to be largely due to improved π bonding at larger Cl-Ti-Cl angles. Detailed computational analyses are given for various d0 complexes (e. g. ScF2+, ZrO2, TiCl2Y2, CrO2Y2, and related species).

Substituent effects on methane activation and elimination by high-valent Zr complexes

A computational study of substituent effects on methane activation and elimination by high-valent zirconium complexes is reported. Substituent (Z) effects (in a structural, electronic, and enthalpic sense) are substantially less important for the imido (LnZr(DOUBLE BOND)NZ) and imidolike TS than the amido (LnM(SINGLE BOND)NHZ). For the microscopic reverse reaction, methane CH activation, it suggests that tailoring imido reactivity through electronic modification of nitrogen substituents will be difficult. Analysis of the earliest part of the reaction coordinate for methane elimination entails structural deformation of the Zr—amido to assume an appropriate geometry for elimination, which, in some cases, is directly reflected in substantially higher elimination barriers. Lower elimination barriers correlate with stronger agostic bonding, providing further support for the crucial importance of agostic bonding in facilitating alpha-elimination processes for high-valent transition-metal complexes. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Synthesis and Characterization of Rhenium(V) Oxo Complexes with a New Thiol-Amide-Thiourea Ligand System. X-ray Crystal Structure of [1-Phenyl-3-[2-((2-thioacetyl)amino)ethyl]thioureato]oxorhenium(V).

General methods for preparing Re(V)O complexes with a novel series of thiol-amide-thiourea (TATU) ligands, a new class of N(2)S(2) chelates, were developed. The TATU ligands, the first multidentate systems designed with a bidentate thiourea moiety, have been used to prepare the first high-valent transition metal complexes with bidentate thiourea coordination. Direct reaction of N-(2-aminoethyl)-2-((triphenylmethyl)thio)acetamide (1) with phenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, and methyl isothiocyanate afforded ready access to the corresponding S-protected TATU ligands in one step. A two-step preparation of the N,N-dimethylthiourea TATU ligand derived from 1 was also developed. Deprotection of thiols in trifluoroacetic acid with triethylsilane followed by a ligand exchange reaction with Re(V)O precursors yielded neutral ReO(TATU) complexes. The structure of [1-phenyl-3-[2-((2-thioacetyl)amino)ethyl]thioureato]oxorhenium(V) (6a) was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Crystal data for 6a: C(11)H(12)N(3)O(2)ReS(2), fw 468.6, orthorhombic, Pca2(1); a = 22.605(5) Å, b = 13.029(3) Å, c= 9.698(2) Å; V = 2856.3(11) Å(3); Z = 8. The coordination environment of 6a was pseudo-square-pyramidal with a deprotonated thiol S, deprotonated amide N, deprotonated thiourea N, and thiocarbonyl S coordinated in the basal plane and the oxo ligand in the apical position. The thiourea function forms a four-membered chelate ring in the multidentate TATU ligands. The two N-C and the S-C bond distances within the monodeprotonated thiourea moiety were typical of bonds with multiple-bond character. Solution (1)H NMR data for all five complexes were consistent with the solid-state structure of 6a. A broad singlet attributable to the uncoordinated NH group of thiourea was observed for the monosubstituted thiourea complexes but was not present for the N,N-dimethylthiourea derivative. Instead, two singlets of equal intensity were observed for the two methyl groups, indicating that there is restricted rotation around the C-N(CH(3))(2) bond and an extended pi system in the thiourea moiety. The four-membered ring might cause difficulty because the M-S distance would be relatively long in an undistorted ligand. This may be the reason such chelate ligands have not been previously investigated. However, the N-C-S angle narrows to approximately 105 degrees, permitting a Re-S bond with a typical bond length to be formed. We conclude that such a ring represents a versatile new building block to create multidentate ligands.
