Accidental Mortality and Compensation Payment in School Activities among Elementary, Middle and High School Students in Seoul over Twenty Years (1988-2007)

The purpose of this study was to identify accidental mortality during school activities of students in elementary, middle or high school in Seoul and consequent compensation payment. Fifty-eight students died due to accidents during the period 1988 through 2007. Data were obtained from the Seoul School Safety and Insurance Association, and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Chi-square, t test, and ANCOVA were used in the data analysis. Among students, 75.9% were male and 37.9% were high school students. Accidental mortality was 1.61 per one million students (2.33 for male, and 0.82 for female students, and 0.93, 2.13 and 2.31 for elementary, middle and high school students, respectively). Mortality caused by drowning and falls per one million student was 0.85 and 0.74 for male, and 0.23 and 0.35 for female students. After age, year and cause were adjusted using ANCOVA, the mean compensation payment was 40,615 thousand won for male, and 62,000 thousands for female students. Highest compensation payment was 127,137 thousand for cerebral concussion after age, gender, year and cause were adjusted. To decrease student accidental mortality, especially drowning and falls, development of efficient safety-enforcing education is essential to prevent injuries and avoid preventable compensation costs.

인문계·실업계 고등학생의 식사에 대한 인식과 영양지식 비교

본 연구는 서울지역 인문계와 실업계 고등학교에 재학 중인 남녀 548명을 대상으로 아침식사, 단독식사 및 가족식사에 대한 실태와 영양지식을 비교 조사하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 조사대상자의 어머니 교육정도는 대부분 고졸과 대졸이었고(p<0.001), 실업계 학생이 인문계 학생보다 어머니의 직장이 있는 경우가 많았다(p<0.01). 가족형태는 부모님과 형제와 함께 살고 있는 학생이 인문계 75.4%, 실업계 73.9%로 조사되었다. 아침식사 횟수의 조사에서 아침식사를 ‘거의 매일 먹는다’로 응답한 경우 인문계 67.6%, 실업계 45.3%, ‘먹지 않음’으로 응답한 경우는 인문계 7.0%, 실업계 15.6%로 나타났고(p<0.001), 인문계 학생이 실업계 학생보다 아침식사의 횟수가 많음을 알 수 있었다. 단독식사를 하는 이유로 ‘내가 바빠서’라고 응답한 경우가 44.0%로 가장 많았고(p<0.001), 단독식사의 주식의 형태로 ‘밥과 반찬’으로 식사한다는 조사가 53.1%로 나타났다(p<0.05). 단독식사 할 때 식사시간의 규칙성에서 ‘불규칙하다’는 응답(34.9%) 에서 실업계 학생이 인문계 학생보다 높게 나타났다(p< 0.001). 식사속도는 대체로 빠른 편이었고, 단독식사 할 때 좋지 않은 식습관 중에 가장 문제가 되는 것으로 ‘불규칙한 식사시간’, ‘편식’ 및 ‘인스턴트식품 섭취’의 순으로 조사되었다(p<0.01). 가족식사의 인식 조사에서 ‘함께 사는 가족이 모두 모여 식사하는 것이 가족식사’라고 생각한다는 응답 (70.6%)이 가장 많았고(p<0.05), 가족식사의 유무는 인문계 학생이 실업계 학생보다 11.8% 더 많이 가족식사를 갖고 있다고 생각하였다(p<0.01). 가족식사의 횟수를 ‘일주일에 1∼2회 한다’는 응답이 173명(31.6%), 가족식사의 좋은 점으로 ‘가족 분위기가 좋아질 수 있다’는 응답(35.4%)이 가장 많았다(p<0.05). 가족식사를 하는 날로 ‘주말 또는 공휴일’이 50% 이상으로 우리나라 고등학생들은 평일에는 학교와 학원수업으로 바빠서 상대적으로 온 가족이 시간적 여유가 있는 주말 또는 공휴일에 가족과 함께 식사를 하게 되는 경우 가 많음을 보여주었다. 가족식사의 태도, 환경 및 참여도에 대한 동의 정도를 측정한 결과, 가족식사의 태도의 평가에서는 대체적으로 실업계에 비해 인문계가 모두 동의하는 정도가 높게 나타났으며, 가족식사 횟수에 따른 가족식사의 태도, 환경 및 참여도에 대한 동의 정도를 측정한 결과, 가족식사의 태도에 대한 동의 정도는 모든 평가에서 가족식사의 횟수가 많은 집단에서 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 영양지식에 대해 분석한 결과, 열량에 대한 항목에서 가장 높은 점수를 보인 항목은 ‘체중을 줄이기 위해서는 식사 조절보다 운동이 효과적이다’(인문계 0.65, 실업계 0.61)이었고, 영양소에 관련하여 가장 높은 점수를 보인 항목은 ‘다양한 영양소를 가진 식사가 좋은 식사이다’(인문계 0.85, 실업계 0.80)이었다.<BR> 영양소의 급원식품 및 기타 항목에서 ‘등푸른 생선은 고도의 불포화지방산이 풍부한 좋은 지방공급원이다’의 항목에서 가장 낮은 점수를 보였다(인문계 0.51, 실업계 0.47). 영양지식 점수 ‘상’, ‘중’ 및 ‘하’에 따른 가족식사의 태도, 환경 및 참여도에 대한 동의 정도는 영양지식 점수 ‘상’인 집단에서 가족식사의 동의 정도가 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 이상의 결과에서 대부분의 청소년들은 아침식사를 하는 것으로 조사되었으며, 인문계 학생이 실업계 학생보다 아침식사의 횟수가 많음을 알 수 있었다. 인문계 학생들은 학습 및 학원시간 등으로 본인 바쁜 이유로, 실업계 학생들은 불규칙한 생활습관에 따른 식사시간의 불규칙으로 인해서 단독식사를 하고 있었다. 단독식사 시 좋지 않은 식습관으로 인문계 학생들은 방과 후 자율학습 및 학원수강 등으로 집 밖에서 식사를 많이 하게 되므로 패스트푸드나 인스턴트식품을 자주 먹는다는 것으로 조사되었다. 그리고 인문계 학생들이 실업 계 학생들보다 가족식사에 대한 동의 정도가 높게 나타났으며, 대부분 가족식사의 횟수가 많은 집단과 영양지식 점수가 ‘상’인 집단에서 가족식사에 대한 동의 정도는 높았다. 따라서 인문계와 실업계 청소년들 모두에게 매일 반복되는 식사의 중요성과 온 가족이 모여서 하는 가족식사가 개별적으로 하는 단독식사보다 식사환경에 긍정적인 영향을 준다는 것을 인식시킬 필요가 있으며 지속적인 영양교육을 통해 식생활 개선 노력이 요구된다.<BR>

청소년의 개별성-관계성과 안녕감이 창의성에 미치는 영향

This study was conducted as an explorative effort to know significant variables on creativity. Particularly, with interest in individuality-relatedness and well-being, it is investigated that how those affect creativity of the youth. For this, a questionnaire measuring integrative creativity, individuality-relatedness and integrative well-being is given to 836 middle and high school students in Seoul and investigate relationship among variables. The results show higher individuality, relatedness and well-being tend to induce higher creativity. Each of individuality, relatedness and creativity has different influences on creativity. Over the whole creativity, explanation gets higher in order of individuality, well-being and relatedness. When creativity and well-being are classified into a sub-category, creative motivation has a high explanation in order of individuality, psychological well-being and relatedness. And creative attitude has a high explanation in order of individuality, relatedness and psychological well-being. About creative ability, all the predictors are explained in order of individuality, psychological well-being, relatedness, emotional well-being and social well-being.

알코올 중독자 부모를 둔 청소년의 자녀역할과 학교 적응과의 관계에서 부모애착과 교사관심의 조절효과

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between children`s roles, parental attachment, teacher`s concerns and school adjustment among Children`s Alcoholics(COAs). Participants were 2,803 middle and high school students in Seoul. The regression analysis results showed that hero role was positively associated with school bonding and academic performance but increased the level of anxiety/depression. Meanwhile, scapegoat and lost children`s roles were negatively associated with school bonding and also increased the level of anxiety/depression. Mascot role were positively associated with school bonding and academic performance but had no relation with anxiety/depression. Regarding moderating effects, maternal attachment moderated the relationship between scapegoat role and school bonding while teacher`s concerns moderated the relationship between hero role and anxiety/depression, and the relationship between scapegoat role and anxiety/depression. These findings suggested that practitioners need to consider the contributions of children`s roles on school adjustment and moderating effects of maternal attachment or teacher`s concerns when intervention programs are developed to improve school adjustment among COAs.

Study of Dietary Behaviors and Snack Intake Patterns of High School Students in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do

The purpose of this study was to investigate the snack and beverage intake patterns of students by body mass index groups (BMI 30). Questionnaires were completed by 1381 high school students in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do, the area of Korea's capital region. There were no significant differences in skipping meals for overweight (BMI 23-30 and 30) or under-nourished (BMI 30) preferred flour-based food, fast food, and other food as snacks. Girls liked fruits more than boys. Snacks were eaten 2-3 times per week, when students were hungry or bored. There were no significant differences in the frequency or reasons (habitual, stressed) for snack consumption by BMI. Depression Status of Academic High School Students in Seoul: Mediating Role of Entrapment

Purpose of this study was to investigate the status of depression in academic high school students and path analysis model for exploring the mediating role of entrapment to depression in relation to academic stress and perceived social support. Measurements were four reliable questionnaires measuring academic stress, social support, entrapment, and depression. Data were collected from students in 17 high schools in Seoul. Students (n=5,346) completing the questionnaires indicated depression & entrapment from academic stress. Depression was more prevalent in girls, those whose parents' household income was less than two million won, who did not live with father or mother or both due to divorce, separation, or death, and those who smoked or used alcohol. Entrapment was more prevalent in students similar to cases of depression and in seniors. According to the proposed path model, 48.6% of depression was explained by academic stress, social support, and entrapment. The indirect effect of entrapment as a mediator between academic stress and depression was verified and larger than the direct effect of academic stress on depression. Considering levels of depression and entrapment demonstrated by these students, better mental health programs with diverse strategies should be developed for their psychological well-being.

Dietary behaviors are associated with anxiety and depression of high school girls

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between depression, anxiety and dietary behaviors among Korean high school girls. The subjects were 1922 high school students in Seoul and Daejeon, Korea. The data was collected through self‐reported questionnaires which included general characteristics, dietary intake, Bulimia (Bulimia Test‐R), depression and anxiety assessment (HADS). Twenty nine percent of the girls had depression disorder (mild 20.3%, moderate 8.1%, and severe 1.3%) and 42% of the subjects showed anxiety disorder (mild 22.1%, moderate 15.3%, severe 4.6%). The proportion of girls with smoking, alcohol drinking, low appetite, and skipping breakfast were significantly higher among those who had anxiety and depression disorder (p&lt;0.001). Anxiety and depression scores were positively correlated with intake frequency of soda and fast food but negatively associated with vegetable and fruit intakes (p&lt;0.001). In summary, the prevalence of anxiety and depression disorder was high among Korean girls and associated with unhealthy dietary pattern. Mental health care programs are necessary for better dietary behaviors of girl adolescents. (This work was supported by the Brain Korea 21 Project in 2009.)

A Study on Gender-role Identity and Cyber Delinquency in High School Students.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore gender-role identity and cyber delinquency in high school students. METHODS: Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA. The data survey was conducted with 1,208 conveniently selected high school students in Seoul, Gyung-gi and Chung-chung province. RESULTS: The cyber delinquency score was 38.94 and androgyny gender role identity was most common (34.0%). There were significant differences in cyber delinquency by academic year, gender, school record, economic status, educational background of parents, experiences of smoking, drinking, runaway, and gender-role identity. According to gender-role identity, the masculinity group showed highest cyber delinquency and the undifferentiated, androgyny, and femininity groups followed respectively. CONCLUSION: These findings are expected to make a contribution to creation of ideal interventions and to help discover early stage cyber delinquency in high school students as approached by gender role identity.

A Study on the Dietary Habits and Health Consciousness of High School Students in Seoul

This study was conducted to examine the dietary behaviors with 510 high school students (260 males and 250 females) residing in Seoul. The average age of male and female students were 16.3 and 16.4 years old, respectively. Mean height and weight of male students were 174.1 cm and 65.9 kg and those of female students were 161.6 cm and 52.5 kg. The body mass index (BMI) of male and female students were and , respectively, which were within the normal range. Students skipped breakfast more than once a week were 41.1% of males and 44.4% of females. More than 40% of the male and female students skipped breakfast frequently. The mean mini dietary assessment index score of male and female students were 30.6 and 29.6 out of total 50 index scores, respectively. Female students perceived significantly less healthy and fatter than male students. Furthermore, body image satisfaction of the female students was lower than that of male students. Female students were more significantly concerned with body image and desired a thin body shape. Only 22.7% of male students and 6.4% of female students exercised regularly, and the frequency, time, and intensity of exercise in the male students were significantly higher than those of female students.

Effect of the Auricular Acupressure Therapy on Dysmenorrhea of Puberty Girls.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of auricular acupressure therapy on dysmenorrhea of puberty girls. This study was a pretest-posttest design with a nonequivalent control group. The subjects of this study were 61 girls who were middle and high school students in Seoul and the experiencing dysmenorrhea; 31 for the experimental group and 30 for the control group. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. The experimental group which applied the auricular acupressure therapy scored lower for low abdominal pain (F=136.13, p=.000), low back pain (F=62.79, p=.000). autonomic nervous system reactions (F=102.31, p=.000) and negative emotions on the menstruation (F=102.31, p=.000) compared to the control group. There were significant interaction effects of auricular acupressure on low abdominal pain, low back pain, autonomic nervous system reactions, and negative emotions on the menstruation between time and group. We observed that auricular acupressure therapy is effective for reliving pain and the symptom of dysmenorrhea. Based on these result, auricular acupuncture is useful by individual nursing intervention and improves the quality of life for dysmenorrhea of puberty girls.

The purpose of this study is to identify impacts of adolescent consumers` assertiveness and appearance concerns on their buying behaviors when they buy school uniforms. This research examined information sources and purchase evaluative criteria as related variables of clothing buying behaviors. The Internet survey was carried out to middle and high school students in Seoul. A total of 907 data were analyzed by factor analysis, frequency analysis and step-wise multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows: From a result of factor analysis on adolescent consumers` assertiveness, appearance concerns and information sources and purchase evaluative criteria for buying school uniforms, each four variances showed factorial structures clearly. School uniform consumers` assertiveness and appearance concerns had significant influences on information sources and purchase evaluative criteria. Especially, an impact of conformity appearance concern was inclined to be high on information sources and purchase evaluative criteria.

Korean High School Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality: Validation Research

This study was constructed to verify validity and reliability of Korean student responses to the instrument, Secondary Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality (SPOCQ) - Korean Version (Gentry & Chae, in process). The sample consisted of 713 high school students in Seoul and Ku-Mi regions. Data were collected in Korea and analyzed in the U.S. using confi rmatory factor analysis. The initial fi ve factor model with 34 items did not fi t the data well; the data supported a second fi ve-factor model with 32 items, in which two items from the original challenge subscale were deleted. The reliability and fit indices of the second model indicated that SPOCQ can be used with Korean secondary student populations.

Analysis of Korean High School Students' Decision-Making Processes in Solving a Problem Involving Biological Knowledge

In this study, the cognitive characteristics of students' decision-making processes centered on phases, difficulties, and strategies are analysed in the personal dailylife context involving biological knowledge. The subjects were first year science and general high school students in Seoul, Korea; 6 female students and 7 male students. The students' decision-making processes were analysed by “think-aloud” and participant observation methods. On the whole, the students' decision-making processes progressed in following order: recognizing a problem, searching for alternatives, evaluating the alternatives, and decision. During the decision-making processes, the above phases were repeated by trial and error. Students preferred noncompensatory rules that did not allow trade offs among alternatives for decisions, rather than compensatory rules of selection. Students had a tendency to have difficulties in analysing the difference between initial state and desirable state of the problem, organising biological knowledge-related problems, and clarifying values as selective criteria. Even students who had high achievement and more positive science-related attitudes did not apply biological knowledge to search for alternatives, and could not utilise scientific values as selective criteria very well. We discuss the implications of these results for teaching of decision-making in respect to scientific literacy.

Study on the Relationships between Gender role Identity and Sexual Intercourse Experience

Purpose : This investigation was carried out to understand how various gender role identity in adolescence affect sexual intercourse. In addition, it was done to support and encourage gender role identity which can protect themselves from physical, psychological, social sexuality. Method : From 2003 7.1 to 7.19, questionnaire made by Lee BS(2002) was distributed to 1172 girl high school students in Seoul. Its reliability was as high as 0.80 and it was analysed by SPSS. Result : In the 3 kinds of gender role identity, girls who had sexual relations showed higher feminity and masculinity and did not show any difference in social desirability. in the 4 kinds of gender role identity, girls with sexual experience showed higher frequency in oder of androgyny and undifferentiated. In 8kinds, bisexuality was higher and girls with experience showed undifferentiated of low social desirability. There were no difference between the gender role identity and the age of the first sexual experience. The factors that affected gender role identity were school, grade, economic standard and whether they have a girlfriend or boyfriend. Conclusion : Programs that focus on problem solving of sexual education for androgyny of sexually high experienced and undifferentiated of low social desirability, should be provided.

Predictors of Cigarette Smoking Behavior among Girl high school students in Seoul

The purpose of this study is to identify various predictors of smoking behavior among female adolescents. Data for this study was collected from 357 students enrolled in a female high school, a coeducational high school, and a vocational high school in Seoul from 1st to 20th July 1999 and this data was analysed based on descriptive statistics and logistic regression with the SAS program.The results were as follows: 1. The proportion of current smokers was 17.9% and experienced smokers was 34.2% in girl high schools.2. According to the factors family, school, peer, social learning, and psychological factors, the predictable variables are lack of family attachment and function in family factors, school involvement in school factors, associating with smokers among peers and modeling and differential reinforcement of smoking in social learning factors, self-assertiveness, self-esteem, and depression in psychological factors.3. According to all the factors, the main predictors were peer association, differential reinforcement of smoking, and lack of family attachment. These variables cause 48.4% of smoking behavior. To prohibit smoking among female students, this society should develop a program to focus on peer leadership about quitting smoking, acquirement of skills of refusal for smoking, counter conditioning, reinforcement management, and support system about nonsmoking.

Self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, academic self-efficacy, and internet self-efficacy in web-based instruction

Effects of student motivation on performance in Web-based instruction (WBI) were examined. In particular, applicability of the self-efficacy theory to WBI contexts was tested. A total of 152 junior high school students in Seoul, Korea, participated in WBI during regular science classes. Participants completed motivational surveys before the onset of WBI and took the written and search tests at the end of WBI. Path analyses revealed that students' self-efficacy for self-regulated learning positively related to their academic self-efficacy, strategy use, and Internet self-efficacy. Academic self-efficacy predicted students' performance on the written test, which comprised problems on topics covered during the previous WBI sessions. Students' scores on the WBI search test were significantly and positively predicted by their self-efficacy in using the Internet. More interesting, students' academic self-efficacy beliefs were not able to predict their search test performance, whereas students' Internet self-efficacy beliefs were not able to predict their written test performance.
