Two Different Pathways from CO2 to HCO3− in Aqueous Solutions of Arginine Sodium Salt

AbstractAmino acids and their salts are amine compounds with great potential for the chemical absorption of CO2 via the amine method. The CO2 absorption properties of various amino acids and their salts have been previously reported. However, the detailed reaction mechanism of CO2 with basic amino acids in aqueous solutions has not yet been clarified. In this study, we focused on arginine (Arg), which has the highest basicity among the standard amino acids, and its monohydrochloride (ArgCl) and sodium (NaArg) salts for the dissolution of CO2 in the aqueous solutions of Arg, ArgCl, and NaArg. CO2 was chemically dissolved in aqueous Arg and NaArg solutions but not in the aqueous ArgCl solution. One‐dimensional 1H and 13C and two‐dimensional 1H‐13C heteronuclear multiple bond correlation nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that the final products in the aqueous Arg and NaArg solutions were protonated Arg and HCO3−. HCO3− was formed from both CO2‐bonded Arg/Arg− and CO32− intermediates in the aqueous NaArg solution but only from the CO2‐bonded Arg/Arg− intermediate in the aqueous Arg solution. In addition to their high environmental and biological compatibility, Arg and NaArg exhibit high CO2 absorption capacity, demonstrating their potential for practical use as naturally derived CO2 chemical absorbents.

Bone-Targeting Peptide and RNF146 Modified Apoptotic Extracellular Vesicles Alleviate Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent disease that causes fractures and loss of motor function. Current drugs targeted for osteoporosis often have inevitable side effects. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs)-derived apoptotic extracellular vesicles (ApoEVs) are nanoscale extracellular vesicles, which has been shown to promote bone regeneration with low immunogenicity and high biological compatibility. However, natural ApoEVs cannot inherently target bones, and are often eliminated by macrophages in the liver and spleen. Thus, our study aimed to reconstruct ApoEVs to enhance their bone-targeting capabilities and bone-promoting function and to provide a new method for osteoporosis treatment. We conjugated a bone-targeting peptide, (Asp-Ser-Ser)6 ((DSS)6), onto the surface of ApoEVs using standard carbodiimide chemistry with DSPE-PEG-COOH serving as the linker. The bone-targeting ability of (DSS)6-ApoEVs was determined using an in vivo imaging system and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). We then loaded ubiquitin ligase RING finger protein146 (RNF146) into BMSCs via adenovirus transduction to obtain functional ApoEVs. The bone-promoting abilities of (DSS)6-ApoEVs and (DSS)6-ApoEVsRNF146 were measured in vitro and in vivo. Our study successfully synthesized bone-targeting and gained functional (DSS)6-ApoEVsRNF146 and found that engineered ApoEVs could promote osteogenesis in vitro and exert significant bone-targeting and osteogenesis-promoting effects to alleviate osteoporosis in a mouse model. To promote the bone-targeting ability of natural ApoEVs, we successfully synthesized engineered ApoEVs, (DSS)6-ApoEVsRNF146 and found that they could significantly promote osteogenesis and alleviate osteoporosis compared with natural ApoEVs, which holds great promise for the treatment of osteoporosis.

A Transparent, Tough and Self-Healable Biopolymeric Composites Hydrogel for Open Wound Management.

Modern healthcare engineering requires a wound dressing solution supported by materials with outstanding features such as high biological compatibility, strong mechanical strength, and higher transparency with effective antibacterial properties. Here, we present a unique hydrogel technology consisting of two negatively charged biopolymers and a positively charged synthetic polymer. The interaction between charged polymers through hydrogen bonds has been created, which are revealed in the simulation by density functional theory and Fourier transform infrared spectra of individual polymers and the hydrogel film. The transparent hydrogel film dressings showed excellent stretchability, a higher water swelling ratio (60%), and strong mechanical strength (∼100 MPa) with self-healing abilities (85-90%). The fabricated hydrogel film showed stable blood clots (within 119 ± 15 s) with rapid hemostasis (<2%) properties and effective antibacterial studies against E. coli and S. aureus bacterial strains. In addition, the obtained hydrogel film also showed excellent cell viability on mouse fibroblast cells. With their enormous amenability to modification, these hydrogel films may serve as promising biomaterials for wound dressing applications.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)] Biodegradable Scaffolds: Properties, In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation.

The results of constructing 3D scaffolds from degradable poly(3-hydrosbutyrpate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) using FDM technology and studying the structure, mechanical properties, biocompatibility in vitro, and osteoplastic properties in vivo are presented. In the process of obtaining granules, filaments, and scaffolds from the initial polymer material, a slight change in the crystallization and glass transition temperature and a noticeable decrease in molecular weight (by 40%) were registered. During the compression test, depending on the direction of load application (parallel or perpendicular to the layers of the scaffold), the 3D scaffolds had a Young's modulus of 207.52 ± 19.12 and 241.34 ± 7.62 MPa and compressive stress tensile strength of 19.45 ± 2.10 and 22.43 ± 1.89 MPa, respectively. SEM, fluorescent staining with DAPI, and calorimetric MTT tests showed the high biological compatibility of scaffolds and active colonization by NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, which retained their metabolic activity for a long time (up to 10 days). The osteoplastic properties of the 3D scaffolds were studied in the segmental osteotomy test on a model defect in the diaphyseal zone of the femur in domestic Landrace pigs. X-ray and histological analysis confirmed the formation of fully mature bone tissue and complete restoration of the defect in 150 days of observation. The results allow us to conclude that the constructed resorbable 3D scaffolds are promising for bone grafting.

A Critical Review on Classified Excipient Sodium-Alginate-Based Hydrogels: Modification, Characterization, and Application in Soft Tissue Engineering.

Alginates are polysaccharides that are produced naturally and can be isolated from brown sea algae and bacteria. Sodium alginate (SA) is utilized extensively in the field of biological soft tissue repair and regeneration owing to its low cost, high biological compatibility, and quick and moderate crosslinking. In addition to their high printability, SA hydrogels have found growing popularity in tissue engineering, particularly due to the advent of 3D bioprinting. There is a developing curiosity in tissue engineering with SA-based composite hydrogels and their potential for further improvement in terms of material modification, the molding process, and their application. This has resulted in numerous productive outcomes. The use of 3D scaffolds for growing cells and tissues in tissue engineering and 3D cell culture is an innovative technique for developing in vitro culture models that mimic the in vivo environment. Especially compared to in vivo models, in vitro models were more ethical and cost-effective, and they stimulate tissue growth. This article discusses the use of sodium alginate (SA) in tissue engineering, focusing on SA modification techniques and providing a comparative examination of the properties of several SA-based hydrogels. This review also covers hydrogel preparation techniques, and a catalogue of patents covering different hydrogel formulations is also discussed. Finally, SA-based hydrogel applications and future research areas concerning SA-based hydrogels in tissue engineering were examined.

Corrosion Behavior of Nitrided Layer of Ti6Al4V Titanium Alloy by Hollow Cathodic Plasma Source Nitriding.

Ti6Al4V titanium alloys, with high specific strength and good biological compatibility with the human body, are ideal materials for medical surgical implants. However, Ti6Al4V titanium alloys are prone to corrosion in the human environment, which affects the service life of implants and harms human health. In this work, hollow cathode plasm source nitriding (HCPSN) was used to generate nitrided layers on the surfaces of Ti6Al4V titanium alloys to improve their corrosion resistance. Ti6Al4V titanium alloys were nitrided in NH3 at 510 °C for 0, 1, 2, and 4 h. The microstructure and phase composition of the Ti-N nitriding layer was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This modified layer was identified to be composed of TiN, Ti2N, and α-Ti (N) phase. To study the corrosion properties of different phases, the nitriding 4 h samples were mechanically ground and polished to obtain the various surfaces of Ti2N and α-Ti (N) phases. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were conducted in Hank's solution to characterize the corrosion resistance of Ti-N nitriding layers in the human environment. The relationship between corrosion resistance and the microstructure of the Ti-N nitriding layer was discussed. The new Ti-N nitriding layer that can improve corrosion resistance provides a broader prospect for applying Ti6Al4V titanium alloy in the medical field.

A Molecular Dynamics Study of the Interaction Between Graphene as a Carrier and Gemcitabine as a Chemotherapy.

Drug delivery is the technique or method of administering a pharmaceutical compound to earn a more satisfactory therapeutic impact for human diseases. Based on the good characteristics (high surface area, high capacity for loading a drug and high biological compatibility and degradability) of the graphene nanoparticles, they are widely used in medicine, particularly drug delivery. Hence, in this research, a two-dimensional graphene sheet as a nanocarrier and Gemcitabine (GEM) as chemotherapy have been used to form a (graphene/GEM) system. Moreover, the interactions between the nanocarrier and GEM molecule were explored via Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation.&nbsp;To investigate the interaction between GEM and graphene, the dynamics of GEM molecule, radial distribution function (RDF), root mean square deviation (RMSD), radius of gyration (Rg), and solvent-accessible surface area (SASA) parameters are analyzed. Results indicate that GEM on the graphene has a more stable structure in comparison with the free GEM molecule. Therefore, the graphene/GEM system can be considered a useful therapeutic system for cancer treatment with minimum side effects.

Analysis of hydrophilicity degree in chitosan membranes produced from the incorporation of extract from the stalk of Anacardium microcarpum Ducke

The skin is the organ that protects the internal organism against pathogenic agents from the external environment. Therefore, rapid wound healing becomes an important target against exposure of the organism to pathogens. Thus, the use of biopolymers as dressings has been gaining prominence, among them, chitosan. Chitosan is a biomaterial that has high biological compatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity and healing effect. The objective of this research was to produce a chitosan-based biomaterial, incorporated with a hydroalcoholic extract from the bark of Anacardium microcarpum Ducke. The membranes were characterized in terms of color, homogeneity, flexibility, thickness, wettability and degree of swelling. The membranes were transparent, homogeneous and flexible with an average thickness of 5 micrometers. In swelling, there was absorption of 50%, mass loss below 6% and durability greater than 21 days. As for wettability, the membranes were moderately hydrophilic. The membranes showed promising chemical and physical characteristics to be a curative biomaterial.

An aquatic biomimetic butterfly soft robot driven by deformable photo-responsive hydrogel.

Taking inspiration from the locomotor behaviors of a butterfly, we have developed an underwater soft robot that imitates its movements. This biomimetic robot is constructed using a deformable photo-responsive material that exhibits high biological compatibility and impressive deformation capabilities in response to external stimuli. First, we investigate composite materials consisting of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Then, using photocuring printing technology, we successfully fabricate a biomimetic butterfly soft robot utilizing these composite materials. The robot is driven by visible light, enabling it to achieve periodic wing movement and fly upward at an average speed of 3.63 mm s-1. In addition, the robot achieves additional functionalities such as flying over obstacles and carrying small objects during the ascending flight. These outcomes have a significant impact on the advancement of flexible biomimetic robots and offer valuable insights for the research of biomimetic robots driven by visible light.

Evaluation of the proliferative activity of cell cultures on nanostructured coatings for dental implants

The success of implantation treatment largely depends on osseointegration – a stable connection of bone tissue cells with the implant surface. One of the key technical factors on which successful osseointegration depends is the biocompatible surface of the implant.Materials and methods. The authors investigated three series of coatings on prototypes (samples) of titanium implants for biological compatibility: titanium dioxide (TiO2) films obtained by plasma activated atomic layer deposition (PEALD); titanium dioxide (TiO2) films obtained by sol-gel method; diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Primary cultures of MSCs – mesenchymal stromal cells of rat adipose tissue were used to study proliferative activity.Results. A total of 30 samples were examined, samples made of titanium grade VT6 without coating served as a control. Samples, TiO2 ALD 25 nm, DLC 100 nm and DLC 200 nm, on which cellular elements showed significantly high levels of proliferative activity showed high biological compatibility.

Hemin-incorporating DNA nanozyme enabling catalytic oxygenation and GSH depletion for enhanced photodynamic therapy and synergistic tumor ferroptosis

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising tumor treatment method via light-triggered generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill tumor cells. However, the efficacy of PDT is usually restricted by several biological limitations, including hypoxia, excess glutathione (GSH) neutralization, as well as tumor resistance. To tackle these issues, herein we developed a new kind of DNA nanozyme to realize enhanced PDT and synergistic tumor ferroptosis. The DNA nanozyme was constructed via rolling circle amplification, which contained repeat AS1411 G quadruplex (G4) units to form multiple G4/hemin DNAzymes with catalase-mimic activity. Both hemin, an iron-containing porphyrin cofactor, and chlorine e6 (Ce6), a photosensitizer, were facilely inserted into G4 structure with high efficiency, achieving in-situ catalytic oxygenation and photodynamic ROS production. Compared to other self-oxygen-supplying tools, such DNA nanozyme is advantageous for high biological stability and compatibility. Moreover, the nanostructure could achieve tumor cells targeting internalization and intranuclear transport of Ce6 by virtue of specific nucleolin binding of AS1411. The nanozyme could catalyze the decomposition of intracellular H2O2 into oxygen for hypoxia relief as evidenced by the suppression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and moreover, GSH depletion and cell ferroptosis were also achieved for synergistic tumor therapy. Upon intravenous injection, the nanostructure could effectively accumulate into tumor, and impose multi-modal tumor therapy with excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, by integrating the capabilities of O2 generation and GSH depletion, such DNA nanozyme is a promising nanoplatform for tumor PDT/ferroptosis combination therapy.

Dynamic Functional Network Connectivity Associated With Emotions Evoked by Fast-Tempo Music

Ti alloys possess the characteristics of low density, high specific strength, easy processing, and good biological and mechanical compatibility. These qualities have led to their use as raw materials in a large quantity and wide range of medium and high-end medical devices. However, various problems have come to light as the result of the application of metal medical devices for orthopedic repair or replacement of hard tissue, such as dental implants and artificial joints. In particular, questions about their long-term efficacy have prompted researchers to continue to develop new types of biomedical Ti alloy materials better match the biomechanical properties of bone tissue. This chapter focuses on the development and application of TLM alloy materials for medical devices in the orthopedics and dental fields.

Sequential alendronate delivery by hydroxyapatite-coated maghemite for enhanced bone fracture healing

Accelerating the healing of bone fractures in the presence of infection is a serious challenge that has increased hopes for reducing this challenge by using nanotechnology. This study tried to effectively reduce bacterial infection by producing alendronate (An)-maghemite nanosphere-hydroxyapatite (An-MNS-HA) through co-precipitation, in addition to increasing the rate of proliferation and differentiation of human primary osteoblasts cells. After production of An-MNS-HA, their physicochemical properties were investigated by TEM, DLS and FTIR methods as well as the level of An release. The toxicity of An-MNS-HA was determined by MTT assay and the antibacterial activities of An-MNS-HA were also performed on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, cell differentiation markers including ALP, OC, ODF, OPG and RANKL genes were analyzed by real time PCR technique. The results revealed that An-MNS-HA is spherical with a rough surface with a size of around 105.5 ± 2.08 nm. Also, DLS and FTIR results confirmed the potential loading of HA and An on MNS with a drug loading efficiency of 55.39 ± 4.68% and a drug release rate of 80.93 ± 5.28% from An-MNS-HA. The antibacterial activity of An-MNS-HA on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria exhibited a significant reduction in infection, despite a greater effect on Gram-negative bacteria. Also, cell proliferation and differentiation in the presence of An-MNS-HA were observed which were associated with an increase in the expression of the ALP, OC, ODF and OPG mRNA as well as decreased expression of RANKL gene. Finally, An-MNS-HA with high biological compatibility, antibacterial activity and induction of ossification, has a good ability to accelerate and repair bone defects.

Stochastic dynamics of dielectric elastomer balloon with viscoelasticity under pressure disturbance

Abstract Dielectric elastomers are widely used in many fields due to their advantages of high deformability, light weight, biological compatibility, and high efficiency. In this study, the stochastic dynamic response and bifurcation of a dielectric elastomer balloon (DEB) with viscoelasticity are investigated. Firstly, the rheological model is adopted to describe the viscoelasticity of the DEB, and the dynamic model is deduced by using the free energy method. The effect of viscoelasticity on the state of equilibrium with static pressure and voltage is analysed. Then, the stochastic differential equation about the perturbation around the state of equilibrium is derived when the DEB is under random pressure and static voltage. The steady-state probability densities of the perturbation stretch ratio are determined by the generalized cell mapping method. The effects of parameter conditions on the mean value of the perturbation stretch ratio are calculated. Finally, sinusoidal voltage and random pressure are applied to the viscoelastic DEB, and the phenomenon of P-bifurcation is observed. Our results are compared with those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation to verify their accuracy. This work provides a potential theoretical reference for the design and application of DEs.

Biodentine: Characteristics and applications today

Introduction: During the last decades, there was a great interest in the development of bioactive dental material with the ability to interact and induce dental tissues. Biodentine is a calcium silicate-based cement that has beneficial effects on pulp cells and promotes the formation of tertiary dentin. Aim: To analyze the literature on biodentine, as well as its antimicrobial activity, its setting capacity, its clinical applications and its biological properties. Methodology: Using the keywords biodentine, root canal sealing materials, epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, antimicrobial resistance, and treatment, the MEDLINE/PubMed and Science Direct databases were searched, with emphasis on the last 5 years. It was evaluated with the PRISMA and AMSTAR-2 guidelines. Results: The antimicrobial activity of Biodentine has been greater against strains such as Streptococcus sanguis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Biodentine has benefits such as excellent sealability, biocompatibility, good dimensional stability with the advantage of a setting time of 12 to 13 minutes, less than MTA. Materials used in the vital pulp method must have biocompatibility and bioactivity to promote pulp cell activity. Biodentine induces the differentiation of pulp cells into odontoblast-like cells, formation of mineralized tissue and restorative dentin. Conclusion: The composition and its applications have shown sufficient basis to perform an adequate antimicrobial activity, as well as its setting time improved to 12 minutes. Vital pulp therapy is one of the main uses of this material as it is a widely accepted material for dentin tissues due to its high biological compatibility.

MXene-based designer nanomaterials and their exploitation to mitigate hazardous pollutants from environmental matrices

MXenes are a rapidly expanding and large family of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have recently garnered incredible research interests for diverse applications domains in various industrial sectors. Owing to unique inherent structural and physicochemical characteristics, such as high surface area, biological compatibility, robust electrochemistry, and high hydrophilicity, MXenes are appraised as a prospective avenue for environmental-clean-up technologies to detect and mitigate an array of recalcitrant hazardous contaminants from environmental matrices. MXene-based nanoarchitectures are thought to mitigate inorganic pollutants via interfacial chemical transformation and sorption, while three different mechanisms, including i) surface complexation and sorption (ii) catalytic activation and removal and (iii) radical's generation-based photocatalytic degradation, are involved in the removal of organic contaminants. Considering the application performance of MXenes on the incessant rise to expansion, in this review, we discuss the wide-spectrum applicability of diverse MXenes-based hybrid nanocomposites in environmental remediation. A brief description related to environmental pollutants, structural properties, chemical abilities, and synthesis route of MXenes is delineated at the start. Afterwards, the adsorption and degradative robustness of MXene-based designer nanomaterials for various contaminants including organic dyes, toxic heavy metals, pesticide residues, phenolics, antibiotics, radionuclides, and many others are thoroughly vetted to prove their potentiality in the arena of wastewater purification and remediation. Lastly, challenges and trends in assessing the wide-range applicability and scalability of MXenes are outlined. Seeing encouraging outcomes in plenty of reports, it can be concluded that MXenes-based nanostructures could be considered the next-generation candidates for water sustainability.

DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND 3D-QSAR STUDIES OF NEW BIS (INDOLYL) METHANES AS ANTIOXIDANT AGENTS

The reaction of indoles with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of 5 mol% p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst in acetonitrile media afforded high yields of bis(indolyl)methane via conventional and ultrasonication methodologies. It was observed that the ultrasonication method produced a higher yield of products in shorter reaction times. All synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant activities. Among them, compounds 3a, 3f, 3g, 3j, 3k, 3p, 3q and 3t showed moderate to good antioxidant activity. 3D-QSAR analysis was performed to the obtained compounds and investigated using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) method, helping to better understand the structural requirements of lead compounds with high antioxidant activity and biological compatibility.

Volatile Iridium and Platinum MOCVD Precursors: Chemistry, Thermal Properties, Materials and Prospects for Their Application in Medicine

Interest in iridium and platinum has been steadily encouraged due to such unique properties as exceptional chemical inertia and corrosion resistance, high biological compatibility, and mechanical strength, which are the basis for their application in medical practice. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is a promising method to fabricate Ir and Pt nanomaterials, multilayers, and heterostructures. Its advantages include precise control of the material composition and microstructure in deposition processes at relatively low temperatures onto non-planar substrates. The development of MOCVD processes is inextricably linked with the development of the chemistry of volatile precursors, viz., specially designed coordination and organometallic compounds. This review describes the synthesis methods of various iridium and platinum precursors, their thermal properties, and examples of the use of MOCVD, including formation of films for medical application and bimetallics. Although metal acetylacetonates are currently the most widely used precursors, the recently developed heteroligand Ir(I) and Pt(IV) complexes appear to be more promising in both synthetic and thermochemical aspects. Their main advantage is their ability to control thermal properties by modifying several types of ligands, making them tunable to deposit films onto different types of materials and to select a combination of compatible compounds for obtaining the bimetallic materials.

Preparation and study of the structural, physical and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite nanocomposite

In this research, a new method has been adopted in preparing nanocomposite hydroxyapatite from natural sources, as the preparation method is characterized by being inexpensive. The compound prepared has a high biological compatibility for use in medical applications in orthopedics and dentistry. Hydroxyapatite was prepared from cow bones, where it was used as a primary raw material, and the preparation was performed by calcination method at a temperature of (750 °C) for three hours. The results were found by conducting an x-ray diffraction examination that the compound formed is hydroxyapatite, the crystalline treatments, and its chemical symbol is (Ca10(PO4)6(OH2)).also, the analysis of Hydroxyapatite powder prepared by X-ray Fluorescence was performed and the ratio of phosphorous to calcium was found (Ca/P = 1.67), and this ratio is consistent with the normal ratio present in the bone, indicating that the prepared compound has a high biological compatibility. The samples prepared were imaged by using Scanning Electron Microscope technique. In order to know the average grain size, and study surface roughness coefficients, the Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) was used, we found that the prepared hydroxyapatite has nanoscale sizes, where the average grain size is about (60 nm). Some physical and Mechanical properties of were studied for some sample that were prepared using the axial compression method, which were sintered at temperature of (1350 °C) for three hours.

Tuning the Microstructure and Thickness of Ceramic Layers with Advanced Coating Technologies Using Zirconia as an Example

The properties of ceramic layers are not only related to the coating material but also—to a very high degree—the processing technology used. In particular, microstructure and thickness are key to the successful implementation of functional layers in application. This will be shown using yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as an example, a highly versatile compound with high fracture toughness, high chemical and thermal stability, high biological compatibility, and high oxygen ion conductivity. For each application, specific microstructures are required, which can only be obtained by suitable processing. Herein, coating technologies for layers with thicknesses spanning the nanometer range up to several hundred micrometers, and from full density to tailored open porosity are focused. Wet processing routes, thin‐film deposition from the gas phase as well as thermal and plasma spraying are presented along with the resulting YSZ layers.
