Organic Oasis: Thriving in a Changing Climate

Climate change poses unprecedented challenges to world agriculture, biodiversity, and food security. As traditional agricultural practices drive environmental degradation, organic oases—carefully demarcated spaces of healthy, organically cultivated landscapes—have become alternatives to sustainable agriculture. This study examines how organic oases can succeed under conditions of changing climatic conditions through promoting biodiversity, enhancing soil health, and lowering carbon emissions. By employing theoretical frameworks and descriptive case studies, the study emphasises their capacity to stimulate rural economies, reduce climate impacts, and promote healthy food systems.

Organization of plant Biological Resource Centers for research in France: History, evolution and current status

Since their inception, the French academic organizations dedicated to agricultural research have developed plant collections in genebanks, often within a public–private framework, to support the study of plant traits and the development of new improved varieties. In addition, since the 2000s, a centre for genomic resources has also been established in France. Over the last 20 years, this decentralized system, consisting of the academic genebanks and the centre for genomic resources, has been supported by a national coordination structure. The objectives were to align the network activities with the framework proposed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for Biological Resource Centres and to foster collaboration with other national stakeholders involved in the conservation and characterization of plant genetic resources (PGR). In 2015, the network was named BRC4Plants and become part of the French National Research Infrastructure RARe (www.agrobrc-rare.org), supported by the French Ministry of Research. This paper describes BRC4Plants, its users, services and cross-cutting activities. We also highlight its relations with its national and international stakeholders involved in the conservation and characterization of PGRs. BRC4Plants aims to be a key player in addressing societal and research challenges regarding agroecology, climate change mitigation and healthy food systems.

Nutritional features of organic peas (Pisum sativum L.) cultivated in different Italian environments and rheological profile of pea-enriched crackers.

Legumes are a key component of the human diet and a primary source of plant-based protein. They have attracted global attention as potential plant-based meat alternatives due to their numerous health benefits, and they contribute to a more sustainable and healthy food system. Among pulses, peas (Pisum sativum L.) are considered a good source of proteins, fibers, starch, minerals, and vitamins. This study evaluated the effect of environmental conditions on nutritional profile of peas cultivated in an organic farming system, in different Italian environments (mountainous and hilly), during different cultivation years (2021 and 2022). Pea grain from peas cultivated under the various conditions was used to prepare pea-based crackers containing 6% pea flour. The appearance, physical properties (rheology and texture), and nutritional profile of the snacks were evaluated, and sensory analysis was conducted. The nutritional and bioactive compounds were strongly related and the environment exerted a substantial impact on most of the nutritional components (proteins and carbohydrates), due to climatic conditions during the vegetative and reproductive stage of the crop. The incorporation of cultivated peas into wheat-based crackers improved their functional and nutritional quality while maintaining consumer acceptability, as demonstrated by sensory analysis. The results confirmed that growing conditions significantly influence the nutritional composition of peas, enhancing their quality and that of the resulting crackers. This aligns with the increasing global demand for high-quality, sustainable food products. © 2025 The Author(s). The nexus between agroforestry landscapes and dietary diversity: insights from Myanmar’s Central Dry Zone

ContextAgroforestry plays a crucial role in increasing tree-based food production for healthy and sustainable food systems. However, the potential of farm trees to contribute to farmers' dietary diversity along multiple paths remains under-researched.ObjectivesThis study aimed to fill existing knowledge gaps by investigating the role of native trees (toddy palm, jujube, and thanakha) in increasing dietary diversity within dryland agroforestry systems.MethodsWe conducted face-to-face qualitative interviews with 47 farmers from the Central Dry Zone of Myanmar (i) to appraise the multiple roles of native tree species in agroforestry landscapes, (ii) to unravel their contributions to four dietary diversity paths, and (iii) to elucidate factors driving the stability of or changes in these pathways.ResultsWe found that native trees provide food directly and through interaction with crop production and livestock farming, leading to dietary diversification. Agroforestry byproducts are used as fuel and manure, and income from trading agroforestry products provides access to additional food sources. Farmers emphasized the ease of tree management and the roles they play in providing passive income and enhancing resilience to climate stressors as stabilizing factors. However, social-cultural changes, lack of extension services, the unsustainable use of tree products, and market instability were identified as destabilizing factors.ConclusionsThis study advances knowledge about the holistic contribution of agroforestry landscapes to dietary diversity by presenting evidence from dryland agroforestry systems in Myanmar. Our findings suggest a need for enhanced understanding of social and ecological changes and cultural factors in agroforestry landscapes to maintain the role of native trees in strengthening dietary diversity.

Seafood supply mapping reveals production and consumption mismatches and large dietary nutrient losses through exports in the United Kingdom

Seafood can contribute towards healthy and sustainable food systems by improving public health and helping achieve net zero carbon emissions. Here, we provide a high-resolution perspective on UK seafood supplies and nutrient flows at the species level. We mapped seafood production (capture and aquaculture), trade (imports and exports), purchases (within and out of home) and seafood consumption between 2009 and 2020. UK dietary recommendations for finfish consumption were not achieved by domestic production nor national supplies. Mapping dietary nutrient flows revealed that the UK undergoes substantial losses of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, which could contribute 73%, 46% and 7% towards UK-recommended nutrient intakes, respectively, through exports of oily fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel. Policies should consider promoting greater consumption of locally produced oily fish species to improve public health and seafood system resilience.

Building healthy, sustainable, and inclusive food systems through public food procurement from family farming: an integrative review

Resumo As compras públicas de alimentos adquirem itens provenientes da agricultura familiar enquanto estratégia de construção de sistemas alimentares saudáveis, sustentáveis e inclusivos, embora se reconheça que nem toda agricultura familiar seja sustentável. No entanto, não está claro se tais estratégias advindas das diretrizes dos programas são traduzidas em ações nas diferentes etapas do sistema alimentar, desde a produção até o consumo. Diante disso, realizou-se uma revisão integrativa com o objetivo de associar compras públicas de alimentos da agricultura familiar e construção destes sistemas com foco nos dois programas-chave de compras públicas brasileiros: o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA), especialmente a modalidade Compra com Doação Simultânea (CDS), e o Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE). A revisão integrativa revela que, embora esses programas sejam elaborados com a intenção de construir sistemas alimentares saudáveis, sustentáveis e inclusivos, sua implementação enfrenta limitações. As diretrizes incluem critérios como aquisição de alimentos orgânicos e agroecológicos, alimentos da sociobiodiversidade advindos de povos e comunidades tradicionais e inclusão de agricultores familiares vulneráveis como fornecedores. No entanto, os resultados das políticas estão concentrados na dimensão socioeconômica, especialmente no aumento da renda e garantia de comercialização. Para que as políticas de compras públicas possam impactar positivamente a transformação do sistema alimentar, ainda se faz necessária a expansão do escopo dos programas em suas dimensões saudável e sustentável.

Food Values in China

ABSTRACTDrawing a clear overall picture of consumers' preferences for food is essential for designing effective marketing strategies and promoting a healthy and sustainable food system. Based on China's unique food culture and food system, this study describes the Chinese food value system and designs a best−worst scaling survey with 2165 Chinese respondents to explore Chinese consumers' food value structure. Results show that Chinese consumers have similar preferences for food values with Western consumers, who all rank safety, nutrition, and taste as the important food values and rank origin and appearance as the least important. Interestingly, Chinese consumers consider price to be a less important value but place more value on food safety and nutrition. They also have a relatively high share of preference for medicine diet and antipoverty food value, implying a unique food system. This study also shows a significant heterogeneity in Chinese consumers' preferences for food values. Food values are significantly related to some particular food consumption, indicating that the distribution and changing of food values in the population can help identify the transformation of food systems.

Exploring bison producers' access to veterinary services in Ontario, Canada.

Access to veterinary services is integral for animals of all species. These services play a crucial role in maintaining their health and welfare and maintaining a healthy, safe, and sustainable food system. Research has consistently shown that rural communities face challenges accessing veterinary services, with livestock producers outlining several barriers including cost, inadequate infrastructure, and delays in receiving treatments. Research on bison producers' access to veterinary services is limited, prompting our investigation to address this gap in knowledge. This qualitative study aimed to describe Ontario bison producers' current access to veterinary services and identify how any barriers, as perceived by producers, might impact their herd health and management practices. Ontario bison producers were invited to participate in virtual focus groups to share their perspectives on their access to veterinary services. Audio from the focus groups was recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Despite all participants indicating they had access to veterinary services, they also encountered obstacles and expressed concerns accessing and utilizing these services. Two overarching themes were identified: producers were concerned about the future stability and costs associated with bison farming, and they had a desire to improve bison-specific knowledge among veterinarians servicing their farms. Producers suggested several strategies to address these concerns, including improving collaborations with veterinary organizations, like the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, to increase veterinarians' exposure to bison, building stronger relationships between producers and their veterinarians, monetary incentives for established food animal veterinarians, and providing financial support to prospective food animal veterinarians. The findings of this study demonstrate that although bison producers in our sample had access to veterinarians, they may not fully utilize the services or find their access entirely beneficial. Future research into the veterinarian perspective would allow for greater insights into these barriers, adding additional value and contributing to a more wholistic understanding of the topic.

Strengthening the governance of food systems for nutrition in Africa: a political economy analysis of food policy in South Africa and Ghana.

To examine underlying political economy factors that enable or impede the integration of nutrition considerations into food system governance. Comparative political economy analysis of data collected through (1) value chain analyses of selected healthy and unhealthy commodities and (2) food system policy analyses, using a theoretical framework focused on power, politics, interests and ideas. Ghana and South Africa. Value chain actors relevant to healthy and unhealthy foods (Ghana n 121; South Africa n 72) and policy stakeholders from government (Health, Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Finance), academia, civil society, development partners, Civil Society Organization (CSO) and private sector (Ghana n 28; South Africa n 48). Nutrition was a stated policy priority in both countries; however, policy responsibility was located within the health sector, with limited integration of nutrition into food system sectors (including Agriculture, Trade and Industry). Contributing factors included a conceptions of policy responsibilities for nutrition and food systems, dominant ideas and narratives regarding the economic role of the food industry and the purpose of food system policy, the influence of large food industry actors, and limited institutional structures for cross-sectoral engagement and coordination. Integrating nutrition into multi-sectoral food policy to achieve multiple food system policy goals will require strategic action across jurisdictions and regional levels. Opportunities included increasing investment in healthy traditional foods, strengthening urban/rural linkages and informal food systems, and strengthening institutional structures for policy coherence and coordination related to nutrition.

Rural land systems both support and hinder the Sustainable Development Goals across Europe

Achieving sustainable rural land systems, including farms and forestry, is essential to achieve the European Union’s goal of fair and healthy food systems while becoming climate-neutral and halting biodiversity loss. Here we quantitatively assess the environmental and socioeconomic sustainability of rural land systems in Europe using spatial hotspot analyses based on 15 environmental and 9 social sustainability indicators from the European Sustainable Development Goals and the Common Agricultural Policy. We find high subsidy support for under-performing sustainability areas and low sustainability performance in areas producing the most calories. However, we identified two brightspots with good environmental and socioeconomic performance (Nordics and Central Europe), and five dragspots hindering sustainability: the Balkans, the Lowlands, Northern Italy, Southern Italy and Malta, and Southern Spain. Redirecting support to reward social and environmental benefits from land use can help achieve sustainability goals.

The Role of Wild Food in Fostering Healthy, Sustainable, and Equitable Food Systems

In this paper, we provide an overview of the research and literature on wild foods (i.e., edible plants that grow without human cultivation and/or animals harvested from their natural habit, i.e., food sourced from “hunting and gathering”) and their ability to assist food systems in becoming more sustainable and equitable. We begin with a discussion on the green revolution and the global capitalist food system that has been created and is dominated by large agribusinesses. Next, we turn to a brief discussion of how homogenizing the food system, as large agribusinesses have, leads to a corresponding loss of local culture. We then provide an overview of the main areas of wild food research, including nutrition, reducing food insecurity, the importance of cultural and shared knowledge, and sustainability. Our discussion stresses how focusing too heavily on the dichotomy of cultivated vs. wild food is problematic. Rather, lessons regarding health, sustainability, and equity can be learned from foragers, hunters and gathers.

Elements of environmental and socioeconomic sustainability related to the food system: A meta-synthesis

This study aims to understand how the individual elements of the food system relate to sustainability through a meta-synthesis. Changes in food production and consumption in recent decades have had a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. This study helps to explain the existing gap that affects the entire process from food production to the final consumer by discussing the elements that comprise the food system dimensions of a healthy and sustainable diet. The meta-synthesis approach makes it possible to capture elements and their relationship to each other and to generate explanations about theoretical relationships. With this in mind, searches were conducted in the Scopus database, initially selecting 1,362 studies that contained previously selected search descriptors. Subsequently, an exploratory analysis of the titles and abstracts of the articles was conducted, resulting in a set of twenty case studies centered on the topic of interest. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, twelve studies remained to make up this meta-synthesis. The elements that emerged from the analytical synthesis of the articles favor or hinder the transition to healthy and sustainable food systems and have an impact on four dimensions: Production, supply, marketing and consumption, as well as on the food system as a whole. As a theoretical contribution, this study explains the elements and stressors of sustainable food systems. As a practical contribution, based on these stressors, action plans can be developed involving different stakeholders and public policies to develop public policies that promote healthy and sustainable diets.

The transition towards a healthy and sustainable food system at local level: the Brussels City case

Abstract Despite the European Union’s political efforts to promote healthier and more sustainable food systems, challenges persist, with these systems not yet achieving sustainability and still exacerbating health inequalities. The EU-funded FEAST project aims to catalyse this transition through different actions including by focusing on mapping factors shaping food environments in five European cities, including Brussels. This study focuses on mapping existing policies and initiatives by the city government supporting healthier and more sustainable food systems in Brussels City. Policies were then categorized based on Food-EPI domains, types of policies (i.e. financial incentive) and role of the government (i.e. policy development). Results indicated that while Brussels City has a clear strategy (Good Food Strategy) and objectives (Climate Action Plan) to support the transition, there is a notable emphasis on sustainability over health which could be explained by the absence of a dedicated public health expert in the local government. While there are numerous policies focused on improving the school environment (i.e. healthy and sustainable canteens, banned sodas and snack provision, forbidden advertising inside and nearby of unhealthy foods), there is a lack of corresponding measures for public spaces. Furthermore legislative policies are practically inexistent possibly due to jurisdictional barriers from higher governmental levels. Stakeholder interviews will be conducted in the next phase to delve deeper into these issues and to explore potential facilitators and barriers faced in the development and implementation process of these policies. Overall, this research sheds light on the policy landscape in Brussels City, highlighting both progress, areas for improvement and policy gaps in advancing towards healthier and more sustainable food systems. Key messages • Despite EU political efforts to prioritise more sustainable food systems, relevant barriers are still present at local level in Brussels City, hampering the development and implementation of policies. • In Brussels relevant policies for healthier and more sustainable food systems have been implemented, especially in the school environment, but health seems to be overshadowed by sustainability.

Unpaid Labor of Women in Barangay San Juan, Aliaga, Nueva Ecija Towards Sustainable Gender Equality Policy Reforms

Globally, women have been a critical part of every household and agricultural operation. Despite their major contributions in the care economy in maintaining a healthy and sustainable food system, they remain largely invisible because, for a long time, economists depart from valuing unpaid work because of its non-economic value and social constructs. Barangay San Juan is one of the 26 barangays representing 7.47% of the total population of the municipality categorized by PhilAtlas (n.d.) as landlocked, referring to an area that is entirely surrounded by land. Before the agricultural mechanization, farmwomen in the barangay devoted 35 hours a week of unpaid care and 49 hours a week of unpaid farm work assisting the family in farm activities. The mechanization displaced farmwomen and deprived them of income opportunity while continuously providing domestic care to the family. This research aims to investigate the impact of unpaid labor for women in Barangay San Juan, Aliaga, and Nueva Ecija are adhering to Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG-5) by recognizing the value of unpaid work. A triangulation approach was employed through a qualitative and descriptive design to assess the effects of unpaid work on gender equality, which revealed a significant amount of time devoted by women in the care economy, hence dismissing their economic opportunity in the labor market. The observed absence led to the proposal of operational gender education, governance in resource mobilization, and inclusion of gender perspectives in ordinances that are critical in achieving equality to increase value recognition of women's labor.

Understanding the Politics of Food Regulation and Public Health: An Analysis of Codex Standard-Setting Processes on Food Labelling.

The importance of the international food regulatory system to global health, is often overlooked. There are calls to reform this system to promote healthy and sustainable food systems centred on the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), the United Nation's (UN's) standard-setting body. Yet this presents a significant political challenge, given Codex has historically prioritized food safety risks over wider harms to public health, and is dominated by powerful food exporting nations and industry groups with a primary interest in trade expansion. To better understand this challenge, we examine who participates and contests Codex standards, using the development of the new Guidelines on Front-of-pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) as a case study. The study involved: (i) collecting Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL) documents (2016-2023); (ii) identification, categorization, and enumeration of actors involved in the development of the Guidelines; and (iii) guided by a constructivist framework, analysis of how actors framed and contested key provisions of the Guidelines. Country representation was skewed towards high-income (47.9%). Member state delegations were dominated by non-health ministries (59.8%) and industry actors (16.1%). Industry actors comprised the large majority of observers (84.2%) and civil society actors representing public health interests the least (12.2%). Commercial actors used frames supporting positive FOPNL messages (eg, low in salt) opposing negative ones (eg, "high-in" sugar warnings) and called for product exemptions (eg, sports foods and baby foods). Public health actors used frames supporting simplified FOPNL to reduce consumer confusion, that hold up public health goals, and prevent inappropriate marketing. Participation in the Guidelines development process suggests stronger preferences for trade facilitation and commerce over public health. Ambitions to reform the international food regulatory system may require an examination of who participates and how to address this asymmetrical representation of interests. These results suggest the need to greatly strengthen public health representation at Codex.

Ecomuseums in the Mediterranean Area and the Promotion of Sustainable Food Systems

In recent years, the growing interest in food as a central component of heritage preservation has been paired with a reflection on the sustainability of food systems. At the same time, place-based food governance has undergone processes of hybridization, opening up to a wider range of stakeholders. We argue that ecomuseums can positively contribute to the promotion of sustainable food systems that can preserve cultural heritage without undermining the development of healthy food systems. To discuss this hypothesis, we conducted an exploratory study to assess the current diffusion and food-related practices of ecomuseums in the Mediterranean area. Integrating the information of existing databases with online research of new institutions, we mapped a large sample of ecomuseums and carried out a Web Content Analysis. The main results of the research are a geolocalized map of Mediterranean ecomuseums and their activities and an index assessing their capacity to engage users on relevant topics through their webpages. The results highlight the existence of an unbalanced distribution of experiences, and the potential for growth, especially in the east and south of the Mediterranean countries.
