Journal Article Owzat? … The Run Out in Cricket Get access ALAN DAVIES, ALAN DAVIES Alan Davies is Professor and Head of the Division of Mathematics at the University of Hertfordshire. He graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Southampton and obtained the degrees of MSc(Eng), in Structural Engineering, and PhD, in Numerical Computation, from Imperial College. He worked as a Research Engineer with Hawker Siddeley Aviation prior to joining Hatfield Polytechnic in 1969. During a secondment to Unilever research in 1980 he worked as a Process Engineer considering a variety of models in the food processing industry. His current teaching is in the areas of numerical computation and mathematical modelling, with a specific interest in setting communication skills in a mathematical context. He is committed to developing innovative ways of using the potential of IT in teaching and learning; in particular the harnessing of the potential of computer algebra and spreadsheets in the undergraduate curriculum. He is the author of “The Finite Element Method” and “Introduction to Computational Geometry” (OUP) and “Waves” (Macmillian). His current research interests are in the area of parallel computing for integral formulations of field problems. Currently he is working as a Financial Analyst for Lombard Tricity Finance Ltd, analysing the pricing policy for finance in retail outlets. Prior to completing the final year of his degree, he undertook a one-year industrial sandwich place mem at H.M. Treasury, working in the Monetary Group, responsible for analysing the Monetary Policy framework laid down by the government together with possible strategies for future government policy. He was awarded an IMA prize by the university, for outstanding performance in the final year of his degree.
