Labor productivity in agro-industrial complex of the Republic of Kazakhstan: growth factors

Aim - analyze the causes of low labor productivity in agriculture and develop recommendations for its increase and stimulation of economic growth of agricultural sector. Methods - systematic approach to the study of interrelated qualitative characteristics, processing of statistical data, comparative and factor analysis allowed to identify the main problems affecting the optimization of labor resource use; correlation method was used to determine relationship between labor productivity and wages, case analysis - assess the successful implementation of state programs aimed at increasing labor productivity. Results - comparing economic indicators of agro-industrial production with other sectors of economy, it was found that, despite the high proportion of employed workers, the level of their potential and contribution to GDP remain low. Close cause-andeffect relationship between labor intensity and its payment is indicated. It was also determined that in rural areas there is a process of aging of personnel, which aggravates current situation with a low degree of efficiency of work and slows down implementation of innovative technologies. Low labor productivity in agricultural sector is due to structural imbalances in composition of labor force, technological backwardness, weak positions of investment attractiveness, insufficient level of initiatives aimed at activating labor activity and developing agro-industrial complex. Scientific research of the authors allowed to draw the following conclusions - increase labor productivity in agriculture of the republic, comprehensive approach is needed, including modernization of technologies and improvement of infrastructure, advanced training of specialists, effective support of the state.

Industrial Development, Poverty Reduction, and Inequality: A Robustness Test Using Nighttime Lights in Vietnam

ABSTRACTThis paper examines the interplay between sectoral growth compositions, initial inequality, and poverty reduction in Vietnam during the 2000s, utilizing disaggregated provincial‐level data. The analysis focuses on the differential impacts of industrial and agricultural sector growth on poverty alleviation while also assessing the moderating role of initial inequality. Employing robust econometric techniques, including nighttime lights as a proxy for industrial outputs and coefficient stability tests, we find that industrial sector growth is a significant driver of poverty reduction, whereas agricultural sector growth exhibits no consistent effect. Furthermore, initial inequality does not demonstrate a stable statistical relationship with poverty reduction. These results underscore the importance of industrial development as a pathway to poverty alleviation and provide actionable insights for policymakers in developing economies undergoing structural transformation.

The Role of Technological Innovation in Economic Growth of Angola's Agricultural Sector

This study investigates the impact of technological innovation on economic growth in Angola’s agricultural sector from 2005 to 2023. The research focuses on how advancements in mechanization, irrigation systems, and improved seed varieties have contributed to productivity and overall GDP growth. Given the importance of agriculture in Angola’s economy, understanding the role of technology is essential for shaping future policies and investment strategies.A quantitative research approach was employed, using regression analysis to assess the relationship between GDP growth and five key factors: access to technology, education and training, financial support, government policies, and market demand. The study relies on historical data and economic indicators, evaluating trends over nearly two decades to establish a comprehensive understanding of technological innovation’s role in economic development.The results indicate a strong positive correlation between technological innovation and GDP growth in the agricultural sector. Increased mechanization and irrigation systems significantly enhanced farm productivity, while education and financial investment played a critical role in facilitating technology adoption. However, challenges such as policy inconsistencies and infrastructure limitations hindered the full potential of technological progress.These findings suggest that targeted investments in technology, improved education programs, and financial support are necessary to sustain agricultural growth. Additionally, policy reforms should address existing regulatory barriers, ensuring a stable and supportive environment for innovation. Strengthening rural infrastructure, including roads and electricity access, would further enhance the effectiveness of technological advancements.For Angola to maximize the benefits of technological innovation in agriculture, a multi-faceted approach is needed. Policymakers should focus on sustained investment, consistent regulations, and rural development initiatives. By addressing these key areas, Angola can improve agricultural productivity, increase food security, and drive long-term economic growth.

Disaggregated Analysis of Economic Growth and Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation, its consequences, and formulation of feasible pathways to mitigate have attracted the attention of the experts and policymakers across the globe. Most of the theoretical and empirical models mainly focused on environmental implications of overall economic growth. Nevertheless, the sectoral level disaggregated analysis of economic growth and environmental degradation becomes imperative for effective, efficient, and productive environmental policy framework. The aim of the current study is to analyze the impact of overall economic growth, agriculture sector, industrial sector and service sector, along with other factors viz FDI, renewable energy consumption (REC), economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and international tourism on environmental degradation. This study consists of 4 linear and 4 nonlinear models using Bayesian Linear Regression taking data of selected developed and developing economies during the years 2001 to 2023. The estimates show that, in linear models, overall economic growth, agricultural, service, and industrial sector growth reduce environmental degradation. However, in non-linear models, the squared overall economic growth, agricultural, services, and industrial sector growth increase environmental degradation. It confirms that the impact of overall economic growth, agricultural, services, and industrial sector growth are statistically significant and hold u-shaped relationship with environmental degradation. Whereas, renewable energy consumption, irrespective of a model is linear or non-linear, reduces environmental degradation. However, FDI, international tourism, and economic policy uncertainty increase environmental degradation. To conclude it can be announced that the environmental Kuznets curve is valid in case of overall GDP growth rate and the separate sectors viz, agriculture sector, industrial sector and service sector. The results are robust and prove comprehensive insights for the productive strategies to mitigate environmental degradation caused by either overall economic growth or growth at disaggregated level.

The effect of macroeconomic factors on agricultural sector growth in Tanzania

The agricultural sector in Tanzania is a significant contributor to the country's economy, but its growth has been impeded by various macroeconomic factors, including inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates. Therefore, the study assessed the effect of macroeconomic factors on agricultural sector growth in Tanzania. The study used Purchasing Power Parity Theory, the Expectations Theory and Cost Push Inflation Theory. A correlational research design applied, data covering the period from the year 1993 to 2023 were used. Data were sourced from reputable institutions, including the NBS, World Bank, and BOT. The descriptive analysis and time-series analysis were applied. The ARDL was used to estimate the relationships between variables. Results indicate that the interest rates, exchange rates, and inflation have a statistically significant negative effect on agricultural sector growth at p-values of 0.0458, 0.042, and 0.014, respectively. The negative effect of these variables on agricultural sector growth means that, when these variables increase, agricultural sector growth decreases and vice versa, hence the study draws a conclusion that, the exchange rate, interest rate, and inflation rate have negative effect on agricultural sector growth. The study recommends that policymakers should prioritize stabilizing these economic indicators and consider targeted support measures to mitigate their adverse effects ensuring the sector to thrive amidst fluctuating macroeconomic conditions. To mitigate these negative impacts, the government can provide subsidies to farmers in order to offset increased costs of production, renegotiating trade agreements with other countries to reduce tariffs and non-tariff barriers so that farmers can export their products at competitive prices.

THE IMPACT OF VILLAGE-OWNED ENTERPRISE (BUMDES) MANAGEMENT ON VILLAGE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN BOTTO VILLAGE TAKKALALLA DISTRICT WAJO REGENCY

This study aims to determine the impact of the management of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) on the economic development of the village in Botto Village, Takkalalla District, Wajo Regency. The management of BUMDes is expected to enhance the village economy through efficient management in accordance with established standards. This research employs a quantitative method with a census approach, where all BUMDes managers in Botto Village are used as samples. The research findings indicate that the management of BUMDes in Botto Village is categorized as very good and has a positive impact on the economic development of the village. This is evident from the dimensions of BUMDes management, which include cooperative, participatory, emancipatory, transparent, accountable, and sustainable, all of which are classified as good. Similarly, the village's economic development, which includes agricultural sector growth, national integration, and economic justice, is categorized as very good. This study provides an overview that good BUMDes management can improve village economy through various existing potential sectors.

Is Crop Diversification Impacting the Trade Basket of the Indian Economy?

Agriculture is important in the Indian economy, with more than half of the rural population. Agriculture is imperative for the Indian economy, with over half of the rural population relying on agriculture and interrelated activities as their foremost source of income. The introduction of New Agricultural Technology in the mid-1960s brought about significant changes in Indian agriculture, leading to further alterations in the following years. Since the 1990s, there has been a perceptible growth in diversification within the agriculture sector in India. Farmers have adopted crop diversification to reduce their vulnerability to risks and challenges in agriculture while also aiming to lift their farm income. The alteration towards more profitable and high-value crops in Indian agriculture reflects deviations in the country's consumption patterns. The study highlights the impact of crop diversification on trade, which is measured by using the share of the agriculture sector in India’s exports and imports. To check the impact of crop diversification on agriculture sector growth, a share of agriculture in GDP has been taken. The study's objective is to check the direction of the impact of crop diversification on the variables: agriculture's contributions to the GDP and India’s exports and imports. The Shannon index is used to identify the crop diversity in India. Share in GDP, import, and export are taken from various Government sites such as the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Statistics, and program implementation and agriculture statistics at a glance. The results are analyzed by using a multiple linear regression model. The results show a positive impact of crop diversification on GDP and Exports and a negative impact on imports..

THE ROLE OF RURAL CREDIT COOPERATIVES IN ENHANCING THE AGRICULTURAL CREDIT MARKET

The paper examines the role of rural credit cooperatives (RCCs) as key non-bank financial institutions within the financial-credit system of rural areas, focusing on their support for microcrediting small agricultural enterprises and rural population. Despite nearly two decades since their reintroduction into the Ukrainian economy, RCCs have not yet achieved sufficient effectiveness or integrated seamlessly into the financial-credit system of the agricultural sector. They remain unable to occupy their niche in microfinancing small-scale farming and rural households, nor to complement the banking infrastructure, which continues to find this sector unattractive. The study aims at exploring the unique features of RCC development in Ukraine, their role in agricultural sector financing, and strategies for enhancing their efficiency. A systematic approach is applied, incorporating comparative, theoretical, and statistical analyses to evaluate the global and domestic practices of RCC operation and identify potential adaptations to the Ukrainian context. Findings reveal that RCCs can serve as an effective alternative to banking services, providing access to microloans through pooled member contributions. International experience demonstrates the significant potential of RCCs in fostering economic activity, enhancing social development, and promoting financial stability in rural communities. However, the development of RCCs in Ukraine faces challenges such as a lack of legislative support, insufficient financial resources, and low public trust. Future research should focus on creating optimal models for RCC functioning, tailored to the specific characteristics of Ukraine's agricultural sector, including assessing the socio-economic impact of RCCs, such as increasing rural incomes and improving infrastructure, examining mechanisms for their integration into the national financial system, and identifying risks and barriers to their implementation. Addressing these areas will facilitate the comprehensive development of RCCs and their pivotal role in ensuring the sustainable growth of Ukraine's agricultural sector and rural economy.

The Impact of Credit Policy Environment on Agricultural Output in Nigeria

The growth of the agriculture sector is a key factor in the survival of the Nigerian economy. However, the production and productivity of this sector have been lower than expected recently. The country is now a net importer of some crops that were previously produced in large quantities. Hence, with the aim to identify factors that influence the sector, the study specifically establishes the relationship between the agricultural sector growth proxy by the agricultural production index and the credit policy variables in Nigeria. The research utilized the flexible autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to determine the presence of co-integration. The estimated long-run and short-run models demonstrated the best, most efficient, and unbiasedness qualities. The findings revealed that loans from commercial banks and the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (ACGSF) have a significant positive impact on the agricultural sector's growth in the long run. Conversely, the long-run agricultural growth exhibited a negative relationship with the domestic credit to the private sector and lending interest rate. This finding underscores the importance of boosting commercial bank loans to the agricultural sector and increasing credit volume from the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund. Furthermore, it highlights the necessity of introducing more financial incentives to attract domestic private investments and lowering the lending interest rate on agricultural credit within the country.

Keuntungan Usaha Ternak Sapi Bali dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Sektor Pertanian di Sentra Pengembangan Kabupaten Konawe Selatan

The economic growth of the agricultural sector, particularly the Bali cattle farming subsector, plays a significant role in improving both regional and farmer-level economies, as evidenced by the profits gained from cattle farming. This study aims to analyze the profitability of Bali cattle farming and assess the economic growth of the agricultural sector in the Bali cattle development centers of South Konawe Regency. The research was conducted from June to August 2024. The study location was determined using purposive sampling, focusing on the South Konawe Regency in four priority subdistricts for Bali cattle development: Baito, Palangga, Buke, and Tinanggea, with 120 Bali cattle farmers as respondents. Primary data were collected directly from farmers through questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving local government officials, livestock extension workers, Bali cattle farmers, and academics. The primary data variables include farmer characteristics and production factors in Bali cattle farming, encompassing the inputs and outputs used. Secondary data were obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Department of Livestock and Animal Health (PKH), agricultural extension offices (BPP), the Regional Development Planning Agency (DDP), and other relevant sources. The Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) was used to analyze the profitability of Bali cattle farming, while economic growth in the agricultural sector was assessed using Location Quotient (LQ), Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ), Shift Share (SS), and Klassen Typology (KTK) analyses. The PAM analysis results indicate that Bali cattle farming yields a private profit of IDR 1,614,465 per head per year and a social profit of IDR 6,806,079 per year, demonstrating efficiency and viability. The LQ, DLQ, and SS analysis results reveal that the agricultural sector exhibits economic growth with an LQ value of 1.03, DLQ value of 1.17, and SS values (Rij 0.16, Ri 0.16, Ra 0.16, PBij 332.76, PNij 341.70, PPij 15.10, PPWij 6.16). These findings indicate that the sector is a competitive, prospective, and leading base sector, although its growth is relatively slow. Therefore, the government is encouraged to pay attention to and support future policies by considering the contribution of agricultural sector growth and assisting Bali cattle farmers in maintaining profitability in their farming activities.

Digital Analytical Instruments for Sustainable Growth in Agricultural Sector

The paper analyzes the contradiction caused by unequal information during agricultural sales, leading to fluctuating prices and affecting both farmers’ profits and product availability. The author suggests a new method to solve this paradox by creating commercial country indices for wheat production and prices using data from modern farm management information systems (FMIS). This paper outlines the development of FMIS in agriculture and examines the factors that both encourage and impede digitalization within the agro-industrial sector. This research identifies leading FMIS providers in the domestic market and analyzes their systems’ capabilities in handling accounting data. The major aim of the paper is evaluating the proposed indices by comparing them to existing price and production indices from prominent market analysts. The author also considers the role of these indicators in the industry’s sustainable development and identifies the limitations of their application. The study resumes that integrating FMIS with state regulatory systems could foster state support for developers of domestic digital systems and agricultural producers who use these analytical tools.

The Impact of Socio-Economic and Climate Change on Poverty in Indonesia

Climate change can impact farmers’ incomes as agricultural production still depends on the weather. Currently, the majority of the impoverished rely primarily on agriculture for their income. The connection between poverty and climate change has been extensively studied, but further research is needed in this area. This research was conducted to provide empirical evidence regarding the impact of climate change on poverty using time series data, which has never been done. This research wants to examine the impact of socio-economics (economic growth, agricultural sector growth, inequality, inflation) and climate change on poverty. This research uses time series data from 2007 to 2022. The Central Bureau of Statistics and Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) reports are the sources of research data. The study results suggest that the government’s performance index in combating inflation, agricultural sector growth, and climate change has a positive impact on poverty. Poverty is negatively affected by the Gini index and economic growth. Government efforts to adaptively address climate change are necessary to prevent worsening impacts on poverty rates. To reduce the risk of crop failure, farmers must also practice practical agricultural management.

Impact of Monetary Policy on Agricultural Productivity and Food Prices in Nigeria: A Time-Series Analysis

The study examined the impact of monetary policy on agricultural productivity and food prices in Nigeria. The study covered the period of 29 years spanning from 1995 to 2023 which constitutes one hundred and sixteen observations. Data were extracted from the Central Bank statistical bulletin. The estimation technique used was Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL). The results showed that exchange rates boost Nigeria’s agricultural output and food prices in the short and long term. The estimation showed that interest rates negatively affect agricultural productivity and food prices in Nigeria in the long run but positively affect agricultural sector growth in the short term. The estimation showed that money supply reduces agricultural productivity in the short and long term. However, the estimation showed that money supply impacts food prices positively in the short and long term. It was concluded that exchange rate increases or promotes export-oriented agricultural products but has a side effect on imported food or production input. High interest discourages agricultural technology investment due to higher operating costs, which lowers agricultural productivity and raises food prices. Increased money supply without agricultural investment lowers agricultural productivity and raises food prices. Policymakers should reduce exchange rate fluctuations and create a predictable environment for farmers to invest in productivity-enhancing practices. The government should increase agricultural credit, ensure low-interest loans, and control prices during inflation. To avoid food price inflation and boost agricultural productivity, part of the money supply should go to real sector productivity, particularly agriculture.

Effects of FDI on the Growth of Agricultural Sector in Côte d'Ivoire: An Empirical Analysis Based on Toda-Yamamoto Causality Tests and ARDL Cointegration

This paper analyses the contribution of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to agricultural growth in Côte d'Ivoire over the period 1980-2021. The data come from World Development Indicators WDI (World Bank). The Toda-Yamamoto causality test and the ARDL cointegration approach are used. The results of the Toda-Yamamoto test show no causal link between FDI and agricultural growth, while those of the ARDL approach indicate that FDI has a negative impact on agricultural growth. There are several reasons for these results: insufficient resources allocated to the agricultural sector and the predominance of FDI in other sectors of activity in Côte d'Ivoire. Our results also show the role that the State must play in building infrastructure and increasing foreign trade.

The effects of financial development on crop productivity: ARDL evidence from Indian agriculture

Purpose This work aims to empirically investigate the effects of financial development on crop productivity of India. Design/methodology/approach Time series data such as crop production index, International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) financial development index, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, arable land, rural population, trade openness and physical capital from 1980 to 2020 was used. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach of cointegration was used to determine the long-run equilibrium relationship between the selected time series. Also, ARDL long- and short-run coefficients were estimated to examine the effects of selected variables on crop productivity. Furthermore, to establish the robustness of results, long-run estimators such as fully modified least squares and the dynamic least squares were also used. Finally, using the vector error-correction model, causality between the selected time series was examined. Findings The ARDL cointegration test confirmed the existence of long-run equilibrium relationship among agricultural productivity, financial development, capital formation, GDP per capita, arable land, rural population and trade openness. The estimated long-run elasticities from all the three techniques and the short-run elasticities of ARDL have consistently suggested that the elasticity of financial development is higher (1.55% and 1.40%, respectively) in explaining the crop productivity of India. The short-run causality estimates indicated the presence of positive bidirectional causality between crop productivity and financial development and seven positive unidirectional causal relationships between the selected variables. Practical implications Agricultural credit being an important non-land input and essential for overall growth and sustenance of agricultural sector, the policymakers should ensure the overall development of its financial sector which will reduce the intermediation, informational and other transactional costs associated with agricultural credit. This will possibly result in timely availability and access to adequate and low-cost credit from institutional sources. Originality/value Though extensive research is available on the effects of financial development on economic growth, limited research is available concerning the impact of financial development on crop productivity, especially for an emerging economy like India. For India, predominantly studies have investigated the impact of farm credit on crop productivity but have not exclusively examined the effects of financial development on agricultural productivity. Therefore, this study not only adds to the empirical literature but also provides new evidence on the nexus between financial development and crop productivity by examining the effects of financial development on crop productivity using the composite financial development index developed by the IMF using the ARDL bounds test for cointegration and other econometric estimators.

Exploring the Potentials of Digital Economy for Accelerated Economic Growth and Sustainable GDP in Nigeria’s Agricultural Sector

Purpose: The study investigated the potentials of the digital economy for accelerated economic growth in Nigeria. Specifically, the study was guided by the following objectives; potential of the digital economy for accelerated economic growth and sustainable GPD, constraints to attaining the utilization of the digital economy for accelerated economic growth and sustainable GDP and ways of improving the implementation of digital economy for accelerated economic growth and sustainable GDP. Theoretical Reference: Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) Theory, developed by E.M. Rogers in 1962, formed the theoretical foundation of this study. It originated to explain how, over time, an idea or product gains momentum and diffuses (or spreads) through a specific population or social system. The result of this diffusion is that people, as part of a social system, adopt a new idea, behavior, or product. Method: The descriptive survey design was adopted using 130 farmers selected through a convenience sampling approach in the four North Central States of Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau and Niger including the FCT Abuja. Data was gathered using closed-ended questionnaires and measured using modified three-point Likert Scale of Agree = 3, Uncertain = 2 and Disagree = 1. The Lawshe’s formula yielded a content validity ratio (CVR) of 0.99, which confirmed the representativeness and clarity of the questionnaire. A reliability coefficient alpha (r - coefficient) of 0.84 was reported by Cronbach Alpha to determine the internal consistency of the questionnaire. The data was collected on the spot and analyzed using frequency counts (f) and percentages (%), and presented in tables and graphs. Results/Conclusion: The findings showed that the farmers understood clearly the potential of the digital economy in creating jobs and accelerating their economic status and contributing significantly to a sustainable GDP in Nigeria if properly utilized. However, the attainment of these enormous benefits to farmers is affected by the reduction in access to the Internet, affordability and quality of service, training and government support. Digital economy could boost agricultural production with wide project margin if infrastructure for implementation are available and utilization is effective. The study recommended the provision of broadband sufficient to provide extensive access to the Internet in order to accelerate utilization and improve productivity, especially among rural dwellers. Implication: Understanding the potential offered by embracing and utilizing the digital economy, as well as the difficulties and strong tactics farmers must employ to successfully capitalize on these advances in order to boost GDP and economic growth in Nigeria's agriculture sector Originality/Value: The originality of this investigation lay in its empirical evidence regarding the potentials, challenges, and strategies for enhancing farmers' utilization to support economic growth and GDP in the agricultural sector, which helped to expand the body of literature on digital economy in the agricultural sector, particularly in Nigeria.
