GILS: Government Information Locator Service. A brief description

GILS (Government Information Locator Service) is an application profile based on the ANSIZ39.50 standard. It has been specified as the basis for United States Federal Government online information directories. GILS locator services are made up of what are essentially bibliographic records for government information resources. GILS and its applications in the United States, Canada and Australia are briefly described. Some implications of GILS based information services for libraries and librarians in Australia are identified.

Information life cycle: Its place in the management of U.S. government information resources

This article, which provides the first in-depth analysis of the information life cycle, traces that concept in policy instruments and the primary and secondary literature. Although these contain a number of references to the information life cycle, that concept is never fully developed. Furthermore, there are different explanations of the concept. The information life cycle, however, could contribute to the management of information resources as well as to the study of government information policy. The article outlines the stages of the information life cycle and encourages further discussion, analysis, and standardization of a concept that should be evolving, not static.

The complete guide to citing government information resources: a manual for writers &amp; librarians

Reading with Uncle Sam:

To raise the level of awareness of government publications as educational and recreational assets and to further the development of children's literature as a scholarly resourdce, this paper describes and analyzes government information resources for children through a content analysis of the government literature published between 1940 and 1990. Social issues like drug abuse and consumer product safety, which have guided government policy over the past 5 decades, are reflected in children's books from the government. Although no single topic or issue predominates in the literature, most books aimed at younger readers deal with the following: safety education; drug abuse; the enviroment; health; Native American folktales; birth control; and stamp collecting. Contains an annotated bibliography.

Abstract In late 1985, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget issued its controversial circular on the “Management of Federal Information Resources. ”This article assesses that circular in four areas relating to public access to government information: information resources management, economy and efficiency in that management, the adequacy of selected definitions, and implications for the depository library program. The conclusion emphasizes that the circular is severely deficient and requires public scrutiny and modification, as well as congressional review.
