Discourse Markers Used by Non-Native Speakers in Good Morning America Talk Show

Discourse markers have been studied extensively in linguistics and communication studies. Its use is very helpful in understanding the message conveyed, both in formal and informal situations. This study examines the discourse markers used by non-native speakers in Good Morning America Talk Show. Unveil the types and their functions, this study uses a qualitative descriptive method in identifying the use of discourse markers. The data were taken from conversations of non-native speakers using Biber et al (1999) theory to determine the types and functions of discourse markers. The results of this study showed that there are ten types of discourse markers interjection, greetings and farewells, linking adverbials, stance adverbials, vocatives, response elicitors, response forms, hesitators, various polite speech-act formulas and expletives. Those markers have variations functions as marker of information management, marker of response, marker of connectives, marker of cause and effect, marker of temporal adverb and marker of information participation. This study has shown that the use of discourse markers varies across languages and cultures. Moreover, the use of discourse markers can also vary depending on the context of the communication.

NOTHING WITHOUT US: AGENTIC POWER IN #MYDISABLEDLIFEISWORTHY

On January 7, 2022 Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the CDC, went on Good Morning America to discuss the state of Omicron. While explaining that more than 75% of those who died after receiving the full series of Covid-19 vaccines were people who had at least “four comorbidities” Walensky concluded, “So really, these are people who were unwell to begin with. And yes; really encouraging news in the context of Omicron” (Dodge 2022). This statement inspired the viral hashtag #MyDisabledLifeIsWorthy, started by Imani Barbarin. The goal of the hashtag, like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter before it, was to push back against the rhetoric that it is ok if chronically-ill and disabled people are dying or discriminated against. The hashtag raises awareness toward the high prevalence of chronic illness and disability in the United States while also critiquing discourse which dismisses these lives as expendable. While abled people were quick to argue that this was not Walensky’s intention, the hashtag brings to light how an inattention to disabled life perpetuates a system of harm. In this presentation, I analyze how the hashtag was strategically utilized by chronically ill and disabled people to push back on rhetoric which implies their lives are acceptable losses in a pandemic. This moves beyond the common declaration of the disabled community, “nothing about us without us,” to a new demand of “nothing without us.”

Sex Roles and the Erasure of Women from Conversations About Gender Oppression: The Case of #BoysDanceToo

In 2019, the #BoysDanceToo movement reacted in anger to controversial, misogynistic remarks made on the television program, Good Morning America. These reactions highlighted the challenges faced by men and boys in dance. Yet, previous studies have documented significant advantages for men in dance. In an analysis of the discourse used in online posts related to the #BoysDanceToo movement, I find that these broader structural gender inequalities are generally not examined. Responses also do not interrogate the antifemininity that fuels the stigma against boys and men who dance. Analysis suggests that this is due to an overreliance on the language of sex roles—which can mask the oppression of women (as a group) by men (as a group)—and the neglect of a relational understanding of gender. As a result, women are largely erased from a conversation about gender oppression.

THE ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN GOOD MORNING AMERICA (GMA) TALKSHOW

The present study is an analysis of the flouting maxim in Good Morning America (GMA) talk show in which Jackie Chan was invited as the guest star. The goals of this research are to find out the performed flouted maxim(s) by the hosts and the guest and to reveal the reason(s) behind the occurrence of the maxim(s). In this study, the researchers employed the qualitative method, and data were collected from a video. The transcript text of the utterances between the hosts and Jackie Chan as a guest consisting of flouting maxim was the instrument of this research. Then, to find and analyze the flouting maxim showed in the video, the researchers used Grice's (1975) theory Cooperative Principles consisting of four maxim types: quality, quantity, relation, and manner. The result showed that all four types of maxim flouting were committed by both Jackie Chan and the two hosts of the GMA talk show. The highest flouting maxims found were flouting the maxim of quantity and manner. Further, the study also revealed the rationales behind maxims flouting, which were beneficial to build fun communication and to elaborate more explanations.

The Weight of Words: A Message to Dance Educators, Caregivers, and Society

ABSTRACTLanguage is a vital factor to shifting the negative biases and perceptions of society in regard to gender roles. In response to the national news coverage concerning Prince George, Good Morning America, Fox News, and the social stigma of men in dance, this article aims to shed light on the power of gender-biased language on the identity development of children. By using a developmental framework, I strive to showcase how the language and behavior embedded in dominant culture has a direct influence on the perpetuation of the stigma of men in dance. This article concludes with suggestions for how dance educators, caregivers, and members of society can be cognizant that their words and actions influence the path of prejudice.

Please, Encourage Kids to Write!

Dear Readers,
 I recently browsed through numerous web pages for kids on cbc.ca and much to my delight I came across an article titled “5 Books You Probably Didn’t Know Were Written by Kids.” I discovered that Alec Greven published a successful book called How to Talk to Girls when he was only nine years old. The book was published back in 2008, so Graven would be close to twenty today, but the lessons on the back cover remain relevant for today: “Comb your hair and don’t wear sweats / Control your hyperness (cut down on the sugar if you have to) / Don’t act desperate.” Graven was interviewed on several popular television shows soon after the book was published, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Today show, and Good Morning America, among others, and his publication became a media sensation.
 Graven’s accomplishment is certainly very impressive, but I was even more astounded to read about a four-year-old named Dorothy Straight, who, according to CBC, “holds the world record for being the youngest published author.” Her book titled Who Made the World? was published in 1964 and it included her own illustrations to depict her ideas about the possibility of Creation. These extraordinary stories of kids who write and publish books make inspiring reading, which is why I mention them here in my editorial, with the hope that you will encourage the children in your life to write, not necessarily for publication, but to help them read and understand stories written by other writers. There are lots of resources available to encourage children to write, including apps, websites, writers’ groups, blogs, magazines, books, and courses, so please consider doing an online search for writing materials or visit your local library to ask for help finding free writing resources for kids.

Tom Turpin: A Girl in a Long Black Dress, Little Red Chickens, and a 90 Mile-Per-Hour Fastball

Frank Tomas “Tom” Turpin is a professor of entomology at Purdue University—where he has been a faculty member for 45 years—and a Cooperative Extension Service entomologist. A popular speaker, he gives presentations on a variety of entomological and agricultural subjects to audiences of all ages. In 1990, Turpin created the Bug Bowl at Purdue University, which modestly began as a glorified cockroach race. The annual two-day festival of insects now attracts 30,000 people, as well as worldwide media attention, and features audience participation in cockroach tractor-pulls (big roaches, little tractors), cricket-spitting contests for distance, and edible mealworm stirfry with sauteed garlic, ginger, onions, and hot bean paste. Turpin has been featured in People, Time , and National Geographic World magazines, quoted by The New York Times and The New Yorker , and appeared on Good Morning America, Whad’Ya Know? with Michael Feldman, and Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion . Since 1988, Turpin has channeled his fascination and expertise on all those creatures that jump, crawl, fly, and bite into a bi-weekly column called On Six Legs , which in 2012 morphed into a podcast. FLOUTS OF THE MAXIMS IN INTERVIEW BETWEEN BARRACK OBAMA AND ROBIN ROBERTS OF ABC NEWS' "GOOD MORNING AMERICA,"

Cooperative principle plays an important role in communication. It is one of major principles which guide people’s communication. It’s application in spoken is interested the researcher to analyze the flouting of cooperative principle maxims in Interview between president Barack Obama and Robin Roberts of ABC News' Good Morning America. This study aimed to find out which maxims are flouted in Barrack Obama’s interview. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation. Descriptive qualitative method was employed in processing the transcription data. It was analyzed using the theory of Grice’ s conversational maxims. Having analyzed the data. The write found the result that there are eighteen flouts of maxims which found in the interview. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that the flouting of maxims also occurred in formal communication such as in president’s interview. The Year of the Tiger Mom

If the primary goals of an author with a new book are to garner attention, generate conversation, and sell copies, then Amy Chua could not be considered anything but successful: After an excerpt of her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother appeared in the Wall Street Journal under the headline “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” in early January 2011, the term “Tiger Mom” has entered the cultural lexicon and has been the subject of heated debate in the public square, virtual or otherwise. As the fodder for discussion on popular television programs like the Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Colbert Report, not to mention the back-and-forth it has stirred up on the blogosphere—the initial Wall Street Journal teaser itself spawned over 8,800 comments—Chua's book has thrust longstanding stereotypes of Asians in America as model minorities and perpetual foreigners into the spotlight yet again.

THE WAGES OF SYNERGY

In the current economic environment, message synergy may result in a perceptible manifestation of ownership's impact on media content. That influence raises ethical issues: journalistic independence and access to the media marketplace for a variety of messages. This project analyzes the “soft news” content of the two most popular morning television news shows, The Today Show and Good Morning America during November 2007 sweeps. The analysis demonstrates that “soft news” story topic selection appears to be strongly influenced by economic connections to the parent corporation. The potential impact of this distortion of the cultural public sphere for journalists, viewers, creative artists and advertising at the institutional level are analyzed. The wages of synergy include a restriction of journalistic autonomy, confining viewers to a role that is exclusively consumption oriented, and, at the institutional level, jeopardizing the credibility of news programming which could have a long-term impact on advertising revenues.

Suspenseful Situations: Melodramatic Narrative and the Contemporary Action Film Scott Higgins Abstract The concept of situational dramaturgy, a form of narrative construction inherited from nineteenth-century theatrical melodrama, reveals continuities between classical narrative and the "post-classical" action film. This essay argues that situations bridge spectacle and narrative, provide generative structures for action plots, and are enmeshed in the contemporary three-act structure. The action film has the double distinction of being both one of the most popular and most popularly derided of contemporary genres. In mainstream discourse, the genre is regularly lambasted for favoring spectacle over finely tuned narrative. As the critic Annabelle Vilaneuva put it, "action movies don't even feel like movies anymore, they're little more than two-hour trailers for action movies."1 Nonetheless, every summer testifies to the genre's pride of place in major studio economics. Action films serve Hollywood well, displaying the production values that enable American movies to dominate world markets. Ten of the twenty-five all-time, worldwide, top-grossing films are in the action genre; event films often wear action clothing.2 Critics and studio marketers have actually cooperated in defining the genre's popular reputation as a vehicle for sensation. The master metaphor for the action film is the "roller coaster ride," or more simply "the ride," which promises to sweep the viewer through a series of thrills. This might seem derogatory, but it can just as easily be co-opted as a means of selling the films. Newspaper ads for Mission Impossible II, for example, used Joel Siegel's Good Morning America quip "put your mind on Cruise control and fasten your seatbelts." The blurb is hardly a ringing endorsement of character complexity or nuanced drama, but it is an endorsement nonetheless. This reputation has led a number of scholars to claim that the creation of marketable thrills has replaced narrative coherence as the primary concern of popular American cinema.3 In this essay, I seek a more precise understanding of the action genre as a particular kind of storytelling. Action films do appear to offer something distinct from classical narrative as it is commonly defined, but they are not wholly divorced from Hollywood tradition, nor are they necessarily anticlassical or nonnarrative. [End Page 74] The roller coaster metaphor has descriptive value, but not necessarily at the expense of coherent and engaging narrative. Rather, I argue that the action genre inherits a melodramatic narrative tradition that predated, and was absorbed by, classical Hollywood cinema. The commonly held view of narrative and spectacle as oppositional, and the emphasis on the genre's apparent subversion of classical qualities, have clouded our historical understanding of the action film. In contrast, the concept of situational dramaturgy helps bridge spectacle and narrative, and places the contemporary action film in a tradition that stretches through the classical period from historical adventures, to sound serials, to the James Bond franchise. In fact, in the action film, we often find an elegant integration of classical and melodramatic narrative practice, and this helps account for the particular pleasure of the genre, for its power to produce a "ride." Melodrama may well inform other contemporary Hollywood genres, but in the action film, it flourishes. The genre gives us privileged insight into the interaction between melodramatic and classical dramaturgy, and should help us rethink what we mean by "nonclassical." Rethinking the Spectacle/Narrative Divide Any account of the action film must confront the venerable question of spectacle and narrative. Most scholars approaching the genre are occupied with the tension between the two terms, seeing them in opposition, with spectacle dominating. Spectacular moments figure strongly as product differentiation within the genre.4 In his essay "Action Films: The Serious, the Ironic and the Postmodern," James Welsh describes action films as "products designed by committees of writers and armies of technicians with one goal in mind: building bigger spectacle in order to generate millions of box-office dollars."5 Classical Hollywood, the common argument goes, subordinated spectacle to...

Good Morning Montenegro: Transplanting American Television News Culture into an Emerging Democracy. A Case Study of Media Training in the Balkans

What happens when you take a staple of the American morning news diet—a hybrid recipe based on ingredients found in NBC's The Today Show and ABC's Good Morning America—and serve it up in the state-run television newsroom in Montenegro? Why would the U.S government facilitate and fund this effort, and what's the impact on local journalism routines during and after the training? This study reports about one faculty member's experience working as a broadcast news media trainer in Montenegro, reflects on the short- and long-term value of such training, weighs the benefits for the country's media environment, and recommends guiding principles for others who might conduct similar “overseas” projects. This research builds upon the scholarly record of the international media trainer's role, its potential impact on the newsroom culture of foreign nations, and, perhaps most importantly, what the teacher-trainer learns from overseas professionals that can benefit stateside classrooms and newsrooms. Journalism educators play an important part not only in training, but secondarily, in mediating cultural transformations.

A Tribute to Geoffrey C. Godbey

The Pennsylvania State University's Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management is blessed with an extraordinary faculty. While each member of the department is distinguished by her or his own academic specialty, there has been one individual among who has distinguished himself in a more global way. For more than three decades Geof Godbey's name has been synonymous with Penn State, and the university is bound to be a different place now without him. I say this because Godbey, as much as any other in our field, has had a monumental impact on recreation, park and leisure studies through his teaching, scholarship and service.Godbey once described himself as a pointy-headed professor (Godbey, 199Oa, p. 63). I will not argue that. He loves the thrust and parry of debate, the theatrical pomposity of those who think themselves to have answers (and occasionally who do), the hide and go seek with the truth, the endless knocking on the door of the unknowable, showing off with numbers and startling statistical techniques, the invention of arcane terms to develop taxonomies which knock the common sense out of what we formerly knew in order to 'privatize' the truth, the cocksure pronouncement, which, like intellectual Chinese food, somehow leaves your mind hungry an hour later. can only play in universities, Godbey insists, you feel home in them (p. 63). One of the things I will miss most about Godbey is his at home ness in the university, the joy and exhilaration he feels living in, and contributing to, the unfolding world of ideas.I confess that when I first met Godbey in the 1980s, he intimidated me. He is, after all, a large man. Standing six feet four inches tall, with a shock of white hair, and the look of a scrappy dog that is ready to pounce if you show fear, I feigned courage to get through my first few interactions with him. To this day I don't know how I would have fared had I been one of his graduate students. Insecurity about oneself does not set well with a big dog. Godbey's modus operandi has been to challenge what he perceives to be weakness, to see what holds up under pressure. That style has served him well on campus, on the squash court, and on television. He has a presence about him, a confidence that commands your attention.Godbey's self-assuredness comes not only from his intellect, but also from traveling and reading widely. You can't be worth a damn as a unless you he proclaims (Godbey, 199Oa, pp. 65-66). He doesn't mean reading everything within the field of recreation, parks and leisure studies. He means reading widely, reading the latest of most everything that's been written. Over the years I have received scores of emails from Godbey alerting me to something significant he had just read, and I have many of those same books in my library that were gifts from him as well.It is this gradual spiraling outward from a tighdy focused interest on leisure to wider and wider views of how leisure relates to other dimensions of our lives and how other dimensions of our lives relate to leisure that marks the evolution of Godbey's career. He has been busy placing leisure into larger and larger contexts, thereby giving leisure larger and larger meaning. This has been especially evident in his recent forays to mainland China. He has blazed the trail for several of his colleagues. This is a desirable path for a mature professor, to integrate one's own learning into a more general understanding of, and appreciation for, the overall workings of things. In this regard, Godbey has come a long, long way. In doing so, he has brought our field a long, long way as well.What separates Godbey from the rest of us is his media presence. He has served as the principal spokesman for our field in communicating the significance of what we study to the larger world. He has been interviewed on, and his work has been summarized in, a multitude of mass media outlets including US News and World Report, Newsweek, Time, Reader's Digest, The Economist, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Morning Show, New York Times, Glamour, Psychology Today, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, Modern Maturity, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, The Utne Reader, NBC Evening News with Tom Brokaw, CNN News, and The ABC Evening News. …
