Assessing the global energy innovation system: some key issues

Energy technology innovation has played central role in the evolution and advancement of the energy sector. The major challenges facing the energy system—ensuring adequacy supply of energy services at low cost while mitigating adverse local and global environmental impacts—will doubtless require further innovation (i.e., research, development, demonstration and deployment) in energy technologies. Yet our understanding of the global energy innovation system is incomplete, with a majority of analyses focusing on energy research and development in industrialized countries, and within that domain, on funding levels. A much more systematic effort is warranted to assess, and fill, the gaps in understanding of the global energy innovation system—only then we will able to develop appropriate policies to guide this system to enable it to meet future challenges.

Knowledge Flows in the Global Innovation System: Do U.S. Firms Share More Scientific Knowledge than their Japanese Rivals?

In this paper, I test the common assumption that Japanese firms strive to appropriate knowledge from the global scientific community while sharing little in return. I found no support for this conventional perspective in the flat panel display industry. U.S. firms shared no more knowledge with their global scientific community than Japanese firms. Similarly, Japanese firms appropriated no more knowledge from the global community than their U.S. counterparts.

TRADICIONAL ABORDAGEM DE SISTEMAS DE INOVAÇÃO É ADEQUADA PARA COMPREENDER PROCESSOS NACIONAIS DE INOVAÇÃO?

A abordagem de Sistemas de Inovação é, ainda hoje, bastante empregada para examinar processos de produção de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação. Este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar diferentes visadas sobre o enfoque sistêmico, destacando a abordagem dos Sistemas Nacionais de Inovação. Primeiramente, é indicada a origem dos estudos sobre sistemas de inovação. Posteriormente, são conceituados os sistemas de inovação globais, nacionais, setoriais e tecnológicos, conforme a literatura sobre inovação. A seguir, expõem-se algumas considerações sobre as limitações do emprego da abordagem tradicional de sistemas nacionais de inovação para a compreensão daqueles processos nacionais de inovações que são de fato dados. Espera-se, desse modo, colaborar para o entendimento do significado do processo de fomento a inovações para o desenvolvimento da sociedade brasileira.
