European Corn Borer Control on Sweet Corn, 1983

Abstract The experimental plot was planted 27 May at the Rosemount Agric. Exp. Stn., Rosemount, Dakota Co., Minn. Plants were spaced at 7 to 8 in intervals in rows 30 in apart. Fertilizer was applied at 200 lb/acre of 34-0-0 on 2 May and 200 lb/acre of 8-10-30 on 17 May. Herbicide, Lasso 4EC at 2.0 lb (AI)/acre was applied 14 June and Banvel 4S at 0.25 lb (AI)/acre was applied 8 July. Insecticidal sprays were applied 9, 16, and 23 Aug. to 2-row plots, 100 ft long, replicated two times in a randomized complete block design. Insecticides were applied to the silk area of the ears with the first sprays applied 1 day following a second generation European corn borer alert issued by the Minn. State Dept. of Agric. Sprays were applied using a CO2 sprayer delivering 46 gal of water/acre at 20 lb/in2. Evaluations were made 30 Aug. by scoring 35 ears per plot for number of ears with European corn borer (ECB) tunneling, total numbers of ECB larvae, and numbers of ears with live ECB larvae.

Abstract Insecticides were applied through two electric center-pivot irrigation systems for control of first generation European corn borer larvae in field corn. Insecticides were injected into the irrigation water by a PULSA feeder MICROFLO 680 diaphram metering pump. Water volume was ca 0.30 in. The oil tank mixed with three of the treatments was SUNOCO UN. Experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications and plot size was ca 10 acres. In early Aug., 10 plants at 5 different locations within each replicate were split in half from the tassel to the ground, examined, and the number of corn borer cavities recorded. Yields were determined by hand harvesting 0.001/acre strips at six different locations within each replicate.

Abstract Foliar treatments of registered and experimental insecticides to control first generation European corn borer were evaluated at the Agronomy South Farm of the University of Illinois (Champaign Co). Corn (Pioneer 3780) was planted in 30-in rows on May 14. Each plant in the study was artificially infested with approximately 30 newly-hatched larvae on Jun 22 and again on Jun 23 and 24. Mean extended leaf height of these plants on Jun 24 was 46 in. Insecticides were applied on Jun 30, just as larvae were beginning to tunnel into the plants. Liquid insecticides were applied directly over the plant whorls with a CO2back-pack sprayer equipped with a 1 nozzle wand (even flat fan nozzle, 4.0 ft/sec, 20 psi , 0.14 gal/min, 10 gal of water/acre). Granular insecticides were applied in a 7-in band directly over the plant whorls with Noble metering units mounted on a tractor. Each treatment consisted of a single row 25 ft long. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications/treatment. Uninfested rows bounded each treatment row; plants in these border rows were cut down 1 day prior to insecticide application to allow access of the granular applicator. Insecticide treatments were evaluated for corn borer damage (number of cavities) in late-Jul by splitting the stalks of 40 plants from each treatment (10 plants/treatment x 4 reps) in half from the tassel to the ground.

Abstract Foliar treatments of registered and experimental insecticides to control first generation European corn borer were evaluated at the south farm of the University of Illinois (Champaign County). Corn (B73 x M017) was planted in 30 In rows on May 28. Each plant in the study was artificially infested with approximately 35 freshly hatched larvae on July 9 and again on July 11. Mean extended leaf height of these plants at infestation was 54 in. Insecticides were applied on July 18, just as larvae were beginning to tunnel into the plants (mean extended leaf height = 65 in). Liquid insecticides were applied directly over the whorls with a CO2 back pack sprayer (even flat fan nozzle, 3 mph, 20 psi, 10 gal of water/ acre). Granular insecticides were applied to the whorls of each plant with a shaker can (number of holes was calibrated for each insecticide). Each treatment consisted of a single row containing 25 plants with 4 replicates in a randomized complete block design. Untreated rows (no larvae and no insecticide treatment) bounded each treatment row. Insecticide treatments were evaluated for corn borer damage (number and length of cavities) in late August by spliting the stalks of 40 plants from each treatment (10 plants/treatment x 4 reps) in half from the tassel to the ground. No phytotoxicity was observed with any of the banded compounds.

Second Generation European Corn Borer Damage Relationships in Sweet Corn1

European corn borer [Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner)] is the most serious insect pest on sweet corn (Zea mays L.) grown for processing in the Midwest. This research was designed to evaluate diallel hybrid combinations of previously identified low‐ and high‐damage inbreds by second‐generation European corn borer following artificial infestation. During 3 years 10 low‐damage and 10 high‐damage inbreds were used in each of two separate diallels consisting of 45 F1 hybrids, without parents and reciprocal crosses. While the year ✕ genotype interactions were highly significant, it was possible to identify two inbreds from the previously identified low‐damage group which consistently contributed to low damage in their progeny and two inbreds from the high‐damage group which consistently contributed to high damage in their progeny. Hybrids of high‐damage parents averaged earlier in maturity and tended to have fewer tillers than those in the low‐damage diallel although there were seasonal differences. If the sample of fines used in this study is representative, selection procedures for additive gene action should be effective. However, the range in specific combining ability effects and the significant year ✕ genotype interactions emphasize the importance of testing a wide range of hybrid combinations in different seasons.

Comparison of Aerial and Ground Application of Three Granular Insecticides for Control of First Generation European Corn Borer in Corn123

A 3-yr (1976–78) study was completed comparing aerial and ground applications of similar rates of carbofuran G. fonofos G, and phorate G for control of 1st brood Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) in field corn in northeast Nebraska. Ground applications of these insecticides were found to be significantly more effective (P = 0.10) in reducing borer damage as measured by reductions in number of feeding cavities per plant (1976–77). The insecticide × method of application interaction was not significant. The combined number of feeding cavities per plant, averaged over methods of application for each insecticide, indicated that carbofuran 10G treatments were either significantly better (1976 and 1978) or equal to (1977) the next best treatment in reducing 1st brood ECB cavities (P = 0.05). Applications of fonofos 20G were significantly better than phorate 15G in reducing ECB cavities (1976 and 1978). No difference was detected between fonofos 20G and phorate 15G in 1977.

Aspergilus flavus and aflatoxin in Iowa corn before harvest.

Aspergillus flavus and aflatoxin were detected in ears of Iowa corn on plants before harvest in 1975. Presence of the fungus was associated with kernel injury caused by the second generation European corn borer. Amounts of aflatoxin B1 in corn from a limited number of selected ears ranged from 1 part per billion to 1560 parts per billion with a mean of 430 parts per billion.
