AAC Awesome special purpose spring wheat

AAC Awesome is a high yielding spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar eligible for the Canada Western Special Purpose (CWSP) wheat class. Based on 29 site-years of testing over 3 years in the General Purpose Wheat Registration trial (2013–2015), AAC Awesome yielded 14% more grain than AC Andrew, and surpassed yields of Sadash, 5702PR, and Pasteur by 12%, 22%, and 9%, respectively. AAC Awesome had similar maturity, was slightly taller, had higher test weight and larger kernels as compared to AC Andrew. AAC Awesome had excellent levels of resistance to the prevalent races of leaf, stem and stripe rust. It expressed an intermediate level of resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB), common bunt and loose smut. It also expressed tolerance to the orange wheat blossom midge. AAC Awesome is eligible for grades of Canada Western Special Purpose Wheat class.

AAC Proclaim general purpose spring wheat

Randhawa, H. S., Graf, R. J., Fox, S. L. and Sadasivaiah, R. S. 2015. AAC Proclaim general purpose spring wheat. Can. J. Plant Sci. 95: 1265–1269. AAC Proclaim is a soft red spring wheat cultivar eligible for the Canada Western General Purpose (CWGP) wheat class. Evaluated in 18 trials grown over 2 yr in the General Purpose Wheat Cooperative Registration trial, AAC Proclaim yielded significantly lower than the CWGP checks, AC Andrew and Pasteur, and was 1 and 5 d earlier maturing, respectively. AAC Proclaim was significantly taller than the checks, but had similar straw strength. Test weight was higher than the checks and kernel mass was similar to AC Andrew. Based on visual assessments and deoxynivalenol testing over 3 yr, AAC Proclaim was rated as resistant to Fusarium head blight. It also expressed resistance to the prevalent races of leaf rust and moderate resistance to the prevalent races of stem rust and loose smut. AAC Proclaim showed susceptibility to infection by stripe rust and common bunt.

AAC Innova general purpose spring wheat

AAC Innova is a high-yielding spring wheat cultivar eligible for the Canada Western General Purpose (CWGP) wheat class. Based on 32 site-years of testing over 3 yr in the General Purpose Wheat Cooperative Registration trial (2008–2010), AAC Innova yielded 4% higher than AC Andrew and was 1 d later in maturity. Compared with AC Andrew, AAC Innova had similar test weight and the soft white kernels were slightly larger. AAC Innova was resistant to the prevalent races of leaf rust and was resistant to moderately resistant to stem rust and leaf spotting diseases. It was susceptible to common bunt, loose smut and Fusarium head blight.

NRG010 General Purpose spring wheat

Based on 26 trials over 2 yr, the cultivar NRG010 yielded similar to the General Purpose checks Hoffman and AC Andrew. NRG010 had significantly shorter stature than Hoffman. NRG010 had a large white kernel intermediate in size to AC Andrew and Hoffman. NRG010 expressed resistance to prevalent races of leaf rust, stem rust and common bunt, and moderate susceptibility to prevalent races of loose smut and fusarium head blight. NRG010 is eligible for the Canada General Purpose wheat class.

Broadview hard red winter wheat

Broadview is a hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar that is well adapted to the Canadian prairies. Compared with the check cultivars (CDC Falcon, CDC Harrier) in the Western Winter Wheat Cooperative registration trials, Broadview produced grain yield similar to CDC Falcon, the highest yielding check. In the eastern prairie rust area, it yielded 2% and 7% more grain than CDC Falcon and CDC Harrier, respectively. Broadview had good winter survival, early maturity, short straw, good lodging resistance and high test weight. It exhibited very good resistance to stem and leaf rust, and is believed to be the first winter wheat cultivar in North America to deploy the Lr21 leaf rust resistance gene. Broadview is eligible for all grades of the Canada Western General Purpose wheat class.

Moats hard red winter wheat

Moats is a hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that is eligible for grades of the Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW) wheat class. It has excellent stem and leaf rust resistance and higher grain yield and protein concentration than the Central Winter Wheat Cooperative Registration Trial CWRW grain quality check cultivar, CDC Buteo. Its grain yield is similar to the high-yielding Registration Trial check cultivar, CDC Falcon, and lower than Accipiter, which is a more recent high-yielding winter wheat cultivar released in the Canada Western General Purpose wheat class. A suitable combination of grain quality, rust resistance and yield make Moats widely adapted in the winter wheat production area of western Canada.

The feeding value of different classes of wheat for grower finisher pigs

A factorial experiment involving two levels of feeding (restricted and ad libitum) and four classes of wheat, these being Australian standard white wheat (ASW), feed wheat damaged by rust (FR), general purpose wheat damaged by weather (GPW) and general purpose wheat damaged by rust (GPR), was carried out to study the effects of different classes of wheats on the growth performance and carcase quality of pigs between 23 and 70 kg liveweight. The digestible energy (DE) contents (+SD) of the wheats, on an air basis were 14.8 (+0.20), 14.8 (+0.20), 14.9 (+0.22) and 14.3 (+0.12) MJ kg-1 for ASW, FR, GPW and GPR, respectively. Wheat class did not affect feed intake of pigs or cause variation in carcase quality. However, pigs fed diets containing GPR or FR wheats did not perform as well as pigs fed diets based on GPW or ASW wheat. This lower growth performance was due to the lower DE content of GPR wheat and the reduced digestibility of protein in both GBR and FR wheats. Pigs fed ad libitum grew faster, had fatter carcases and over the weight range 45 to 70 kg required more feed per unit liveweight gain than pigs fed in restricted amounts.
