The Velocity Dispersion Function for Quiescent Galaxies in Massive Clusters from IllustrisTNG

We derive the central stellar velocity dispersion function (VDF) for quiescent galaxies in 280 massive clusters with log(M200/M⊙)>14 in IllustrisTNG300. The VDF is an independent tracer of the dark matter mass distribution of subhalos in galaxy clusters. Based on the IllustrisTNG cluster catalog, we select quiescent member subhalos with a specific star formation rate <2 × 10−11 yr−1 and stellar mass log(M*/M⊙)>9 . We then simulate fiber spectroscopy to measure the stellar velocity dispersion of the simulated galaxies; we compute the line-of-sight velocity dispersions of star particles within a cylindrical volume that penetrates the core of each subhalo. We construct the VDFs for quiescent subhalos within R 200. The simulated cluster VDF exceeds the simulated field VDF for logσ*>2.2 , indicating the preferential formation of large velocity dispersion galaxies in dense environments. The excess is similar in simulations and in the observations. We also compare the simulated VDF for the three most massive clusters with log(M200/M⊙)>15 with the observed VDF for the two most massive clusters in the local Universe, Coma and A2029. Intriguingly, the simulated VDFs are significantly lower for logσ*>2.0 . This discrepancy results from (1) a smaller number of subhalos with log(M*/M⊙)>10 in TNG300 compared to the observed clusters, and (2) a significant offset between the observed and simulated M *–σ * relations. The consistency in the overall shape of the observed and simulated VDFs offers a unique window into galaxy and structure formation in simulations.

The CAVITY project: The spatially resolved stellar population properties of galaxies in voids

The Universe is shaped as a web-like structure, formed by clusters, filaments, and walls that leave large low number-density volumes in between named voids. Galaxies in voids have been found to be of a later type, bluer, less massive, and to have a slower evolution than galaxies in denser environments (filaments and walls). However, the effect of the void environment on their stellar population properties is still unclear. We aim to address this question using 118 optical integral field unit datacubes from the Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY), observed with the PMAS/PPaK spectrograph at the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almería, Spain). We fitted their spectra from 3750 Å to 7000 Å with the non-parametric full spectral fitting code STARLIGHT to estimate their stellar population properties: stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, age, star formation rate (SFR), and specific star formation rate (sSFR). We analysed the results through the global properties, assessing the behaviour of the whole galaxy, and the spatially resolved information, by obtaining the radial profiles from the 2D maps up to the 2 half-light radius of each stellar population property. The results were examined with respect to their morphological type and stellar mass. Then, we compared them with a control sample of galaxies in filaments and walls, selected from the CALIFA survey and analysed following the same procedure. To make a fair comparison between the samples, we selected a twin filament galaxy for each void galaxy of the same morphological type and closest stellar mass, to match the void galaxy sample as much as possible in morphology and mass. Key findings from our global and spatially resolved analysis include void galaxies having a slightly higher half-light radius (HLR), lower stellar mass surface density, and younger ages across all morphological types, and slightly elevated SFR and sSFR (only significant enough for Sas). Many of these differences appear in the outer parts of spiral galaxies (HLR &gt; 1), where discs are younger and exhibit a higher sSFR compared to galaxies in filaments and walls, indicative of less evolved discs. This trend is also found for early-type spirals, suggesting a slower transition from star-forming to quiescent states in voids. Our analysis indicates that void galaxies, influenced by their surroundings, undergo a more gradual evolution, especially in their outer regions, with a more pronounced effect for low-mass galaxies. We find that below a certain mass threshold, environmental processes play a more influential role in galactic evolution.

Star Formation and Dust in the Cosmic Web

The large-scale environment of the cosmic web is believed to impact galaxy evolution, but there is still no consensus regarding the mechanisms. We use a semi-analytic model (SAM) galaxy catalog to study the star formation and dust content of local galaxies in different cosmic environments of the cosmic web—namely voids, filaments, walls, and nodes. We find a strong impact of the environment only for galaxies with M stars ≲ 1010.8 M ⊙: the less dense the environment, the larger the star formation rate and dust content at fixed stellar mass. This is attributed to the fact that galaxies in less dense environments typically feature younger stellar populations, a slower evolution of their stellar mass, and delayed star formation compared to galaxies in denser environments. As for galaxies with M stars ≳ 1010.8 M ⊙, the differences among environments are milder, due to the disk-instability-driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth implemented in the SAM, which makes SMBH growth, and thus galaxy quenching, environment-insensitive. We qualitatively test our predictions against observations by identifying environments in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 using dust masses derived from the GAMA survey. The agreement is encouraging, particularly at logMstars/M⊙≳10.5–11 , where the specific star formation rates and dust masses appear quite environment-insensitive. This result confirms the importance of in situ growth channels of SMBHs.

The impact of environmental effects on active galactic nuclei: A decline in the incidence of ionized outflows

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have generally been considered to be less frequent in denser environments due to a lower number of galaxy-galaxy interactions and/or the removal of their gas-rich reservoirs by the dense intergalactic medium. However, recent observational and theoretical works suggest that the effect of ram-pressure stripping acting on galaxies in dense environments might reduce the angular momentum of their gas, causing it to infall towards the super massive black hole at their centre, activating the AGN phase. In this work we explore the connection between environment and nuclear activity by evaluating the variation in the incidence of ionized outflows, a common phenomenon associated with nuclear activity, in AGNs across different environments. We select a sample of approximately 3300 optical AGNs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13, which we match with a group catalogue to identify galaxies in isolation or residing in groups. We further probe their environments through the projected distance to the central galaxy of the group or cluster and the projected surface density to the fifth neighbour (δ5). The presence of ionized outflows is determined through the modelling of the [O III] λ5007 emission line. We find that at lower masses (&lt; 1010.3 M⊙), the fraction of ionized outflows is significantly lower in satellite AGNs (∼7%) than in isolated (∼22%) AGNs, probably due to their different AGN luminosity, L[O III], in this stellar mass range. The fraction of outflows decreases at distances closer to the central galaxy of the group or cluster for all satellite AGNs; however, only the lower-mass ones (109 − 1010.3 M⊙) display a significant decline with δ5. Although this study does not include AGNs in the densest regions of galaxy clusters, our findings suggest that AGNs in dense environments accrete less gas than those in the field, potentially due to the removal of the gas reservoirs via stripping or starvation, leading to a negative connection between environment and AGN activity. Based on our results, we propose that the observed change in the incidence of outflows when moving towards denser regions of groups and clusters could contribute to the higher gas metallicities of cluster galaxies compared to field galaxies, especially at lower masses.

The role of mass and environment in the build-up of the quenched galaxy population since cosmic noon

ABSTRACT We conduct the first study of how the relative quenching probability of galaxies depends on environment over the redshift range 0.5 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 3, using data from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey. By constructing the stellar mass functions for quiescent and post-starburst (PSB) galaxies in high-, medium-, and low-density environments to z = 3, we find an excess of quenched galaxies in dense environments out to at least z ∼ 2. Using the growth rate in the number of quenched galaxies, combined with the star-forming galaxy mass function, we calculate the probability that a given star-forming galaxy is quenched per unit time. We find a significantly higher quenching rate in dense environments (at a given stellar mass) at all redshifts. Massive galaxies (M* &amp;gt; 1010.7 M⊙) are on average 1.7 ± 0.2 times more likely to quench per Gyr in the densest third of environments compared to the sparsest third. Finally, we compare the quiescent galaxy growth rate to the rate at which galaxies pass through a PSB phase. Assuming a visibility time-scale of 500 Myr, we find that the PSB route can explain ∼50 per cent of the growth in the quiescent population at high stellar mass (M* &amp;gt; 1010.7 M⊙) in the redshift range 0.5 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 3, and potentially all of the growth at lower stellar masses.

The Local Cluster Survey II: disc-dominated cluster galaxies with suppressed star formation

ABSTRACT We investigate the role of dense environments in suppressing star formation by studying $\rm \log _{10}(M_\star /M_\odot) \gt 9.7$ star-forming galaxies in nine clusters from the Local Cluster Survey (0.0137 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 0.0433) and a large comparison field sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We compare the star formation rate (SFR) with stellar mass relation as a function of environment and morphology. After carefully controlling for mass, we find that in all environments, the degree of SFR suppression increases with increasing bulge-to-total (B/T) ratio. In addition, the SFRs of cluster and infall galaxies at a fixed mass are more suppressed than their field counterparts at all values of B/T. These results suggest a quenching mechanism that is linked to bulge growth that operates in all environments and an additional mechanism that further reduces the SFRs of galaxies in dense environments. We limit the sample to B/T ≤ 0.3 galaxies to control for the trends with morphology and find that the excess population of cluster galaxies with suppressed SFRs persists. We model the time-scale associated with the decline of SFRs in dense environments and find that the observed SFRs of the cluster core galaxies are consistent with a range of models including a mechanism that acts slowly and continuously over a long (2–5 Gyr) time-scale, and a more rapid (&amp;lt;1 Gyr) quenching event that occurs after a delay period of 1–6 Gyr. Quenching may therefore start immediately after galaxies enter clusters.

Revealing impacts of stellar mass and environment on galaxy quenching

Aims. Galaxy quenching is a critical step in galaxy evolution. In this work, we present a statistical study of galaxy quenching in 17 cluster candidates at 0.5 &lt; z &lt; 1.0 in the COSMOS field. Methods. We selected cluster members with a wide range of stellar masses and environments to study their mass and environment dependence. Member galaxies are classified into star-forming, quiescent, and recently quenched galaxies (RQGs) using the rest-frame UVJ diagram. We further separated fast- and slow-quenching RQGs by model evolutionary tracks on the UVJ diagram. We defined the quenching efficiency as the ratio of RQGs to star-forming galaxies and the quenching stage as the ratio of RQGs to quiescent galaxies to quantify the quenching processes. Results. We find that quenching efficiency is enhanced by both higher stellar mass and denser environment. Massive or dense environment galaxies quench earlier. Slow quenching is more dominant for massive galaxies and at lower redshifts, but no clear dependence on the environment is found. Our results suggest that low-mass galaxies in dense environments are likely quenched through a short timescale process such as ram pressure stripping, while massive galaxies in a sparse environment are mostly quenched by a longer timescale process. Using the line strength of Hδ and [OII], we confirmed that our UVJ method to select RQGs agrees with high S/N DEIMOS spectra. However, we caution that the visibility time (duration of a galaxy’s stay in the RQG region on the UVJ diagram) may also depend on mass or environment. The method introduced in this work can be applied to RQG candidates for future statistical RQG spectroscopic surveys. The systematic spectroscopic RQG study will disentangle the degeneracy between visibility time and quenching properties.

Revealing the properties of void galaxies and their assembly using the eagle simulation

ABSTRACT We explore the properties of central galaxies living in voids using the eagle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Based on the minimum void-centric distance, we define four galaxy samples: inner void, outer void, wall, and skeleton. We find that inner void galaxies with host halo masses $\lt 10^{12}\,\rm M_{\odot }$ have lower stellar mass and stellar mass fractions than those in denser environments, and the fraction of galaxies with star formation (SF) activity and atomic hydrogen (H i) gas decreases with increasing void-centric distance, in agreement with observations. To mitigate the influence of stellar (halo) mass, we compare inner void galaxies to subsamples of fixed stellar (halo) mass. Compared to denser environments, inner void galaxies with $M_{*}= 10^{[9.0-9.5]}\,\rm M_{\odot }$ have comparable SF activity and H i gas fractions, but the lowest quenched galaxy fraction. Inner void galaxies with $M_{*}= 10^{[9.5-10.5]}\,\rm M_{\odot }$ have the lowest H i gas fraction, the highest quenched fraction and the lowest gas metallicities. On the other hand, inner void galaxies with $M_{*}\gt 10^{10.5}\,\rm M_{\odot }$ have comparable SF activity and H i gas fractions to their analogues in denser environments. They retain the highest metallicity gas that might be linked to physical processes that act with lower efficiency in underdense regions such as AGN (active galaxy nucleus) feedback. Furthermore, inner void galaxies have the lowest fraction of positive gas-phase metallicity gradients, which are typically associated with external processes or feedback events, suggesting they have more quiet merger histories than galaxies in denser environments. Our findings shed light on how galaxies are influenced by their large-scale environment.

The Physical Properties of Massive Green Valley Galaxies as a Function of Environments at 0.5 < z < 2.5 in 3D-HST/Candels Fields

To investigate the effects of environment in the quenching phase, we study the empirical relations for green valley (GV) galaxies between overdensity and other physical properties (i.e., effective radius r e , Sérsic indices n, and specific star formation rate (sSFR)). Based on five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields, we construct a large sample of 2126 massive (M ⋆ > 1010 M ☉) GV galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.5 and split it into the higher overdensity quarter and the lower overdensity quarter. The results shows that GV galaxies in denser environments have higher n values and lower sSFR at 0.5 < z < 1, while there is no discernible distinction at 1 < z < 2.5. No significant enlarging or shrinking is found for GV galaxies in different environments within the same redshift bin. This suggests that a dense environment would promote the growth of bulges and suppress star formation activity of GV galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1.5 but would not affect the galaxy size. We also study the dependence of the fraction of three populations (blue cloud, GV, and red sequence) on both environments and M ⋆. At a given M ⋆, blue cloud fraction goes down with increasing environment density, while red sequence fraction is opposite. For the most massive GV galaxies, a sharp drop appears in the denser environment. Coupled with the mass dependence of three fractions in different redshift bins, our result implies that stellar mass and environments jointly promote the quenching process. Such a dual effect is also confirmed by recalculating the new effective GV fraction as the number of GV galaxies over the number of nonquiescent galaxies.

A Dynamical Model of the M101/NGC 5474 Encounter

We present the first dynamical simulation that recreates the major properties of the archetypal nearby spiral galaxy M101. Our model describes a grazing but relatively close (∼14 kpc) passage of the companion galaxy NGC 5474 through M101's outer disk approximately 200 Myr ago. The passage is retrograde for both disks, yielding a relatively strong gravitational response while suppressing the formation of long tidal tails. The simulation reproduces M101's overall lopsidedness, as well as the extended NE Plume and the sharp western edge of the galaxy’s disk. The post-starburst populations observed in M101's NE Plume are likely a result of star formation triggered at the point of contact where the galaxies collided. Over time, this material will mix azimuthally, leaving behind diffuse, kinematically coherent stellar streams in M101's outer disk. At late times after the encounter, the density profile of M101's disk shows a broken “upbending” profile similar to those seen in spiral galaxies in denser environments, further demonstrating the connection between interactions and long-term structural changes in galaxy disks.

Decoding the star forming properties of gas-rich galaxy pairs

ABSTRACT We extend the analysis of Bok et al. (2020) in which the H i content of isolated galaxies from the AMIGA (Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies) sample and selected paired galaxies from ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA) were examined as a potential driver of galaxy location on the WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) mid-infrared SFR–M⋆ sequence. By further characterizing the isolated and pair galaxy samples, i.e. in terms of optical galaxy morphology, a more detailed and quantitative description of local galaxy environment by way of the local number density (η) and tidal strength (Q) parameters, star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm {H{\small {\rm ~I}}}}$), and H i integrated profile asymmetries, we present plausible pathways for the broadening of the pair sample H i deficiency distribution towards both high and low deficiencies compared to the narrower isolated galaxy sample distribution (i.e. σPAIRS = 0.34 versus σAMIGA = 0.28). We associate the gas-rich tail of the pair deficiency distribution with the highest Q values, large profile asymmetries, and low SFEs. From this, we infer that merger activity is enhancing gas supplies, as well as disrupting the efficiency of star formation, via strong gravitational torques. The gas-poor wing of the deficiency distribution appears to be populated with galaxies in denser environments (with larger η values on average), more akin to groups. Despite our gas-rich selection criterion, there is a small population of early-type galaxies in the pair sample, which primarily fall in the positive deficiency wing of the distribution. These results suggest that a combination of a denser galaxy environment, early-type morphology, and higher stellar mass is contributing to the broadening of the deficiency distribution towards larger deficiencies.

Star-formation Property of High Redshift Galaxies in Clusters: Perceptive View from Observation and Simulation

AbstractThe evolution of star formation properties of galaxies depends on the environment where galaxies reside, and generally star formation of galaxies in dense environment decreases more quickly. Interestingly, the star formation property of high-redshift galaxies clusters vary largely even though they are at similar redshift. We have found that the large-scale environment surrounding each galaxy cluster can contribute to make this cluster-by-cluster variation. This correlation is found in the results from observational data as well as in the simulations of galaxy formation. We suggest the ‘Web-feeding model’ to explain this trend. Star-forming galaxies falling into the galaxy cluster from surrounding large-scale structure make the quiescent galaxy fraction of the cluster lower than relatively isolated clusters.

The spatially resolved view of star formation in galaxy clusters

AbstractIntegral field spectroscopic studies of galaxies in dense environments, such as clusters and groups of galaxies, have provided new insights for understanding how star formation proceeds, and quenches. I present the spatially resolved view of the star formation activity and its link with the multiphase gas in cluster galaxies based on MUSE and multi-wavelength data of the GASP survey. I discuss the link among the different scales (i.e. the link between the spatially resolved and the global star formation rate-stellar mass relation), the spatially resolved signatures and the quenching histories of jellyfish (progenitors) and post-starburst (descendants) galaxies in clusters. Finally, I discuss the multi-wavelength view of star-forming clumps both in galaxy disks and in the tails of stripped gas.

NGC 6845 Revisited: Stellar Kinematics on the Early Type Member Galaxies

Abstract We observed the compact group of galaxies NGC 6845 with GMOS-S imaging and long-slit spectroscopy. The group itself is comprised of two spiral galaxies and two S0 galaxies, and shows signs of gravitational interaction among them. While the spiral galaxies have been already well studied, the two S0 galaxies have received little attention. We investigate the morphology and stellar kinematics of the two S0 galaxies in detail in order to derive the value for their mass and subsequently incorporate them into the mass model for the group. It was found that the internal kinematics of the largest S0 (NGC 6845 C) is mostly regular, while the smallest S0 (NGC 6845 D) shows some hint of interaction, most likely with NGC 6845 C and NGC 6845 A. The new determination of the dynamical mass of the group implies that the group mass has to be 10 times the combined mass of the individual members according to their internal kinematics. The results point to an early stage of the group interaction and also to the possibility that it has still not reached virial equilibrium. From the galaxy evolution viewpoint, this group represents an example of the case of the transformation of Spirals into S0 galaxies in dense environments.

The Tully-Fisher relation in dense groups at z ∼ 0.7 in the MAGIC survey

Context. Galaxies in dense environments are subject to interactions and mechanisms that directly affect their evolution by lowering their gas fractions and consequently reducing their star-forming capacity earlier than their isolated counterparts. Aims. The aim of our project is to get new insights into the role of environment in the stellar and baryonic content of galaxies using a kinematic approach, through the study of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR). Methods. We study a sample of galaxies in eight groups, over-dense by a factor larger than 25 with respect to the average projected density, spanning a redshift range of 0.5 &lt; z &lt; 0.8 and located in ten pointings of the MAGIC MUSE Guaranteed Time Observations program. We perform a morpho-kinematics analysis of this sample and set up a selection based on galaxy size, [O II]λλ3727,3729 emission line doublet signal-to-noise ratio, bulge-to-disk ratio, and nuclear activity to construct a robust kinematic sample of 67 star-forming galaxies. Results. We show that this selection considerably reduces the number of outliers in the TFR, which are predominantly dispersion-dominated galaxies. Similar to other studies, we find that including the velocity dispersion in the velocity budget mainly affects galaxies with low rotation velocities, reduces the scatter in the relation, increases its slope, and decreases its zero-point. Including gas masses is more significant for low-mass galaxies due to a larger gas fraction, and thus decreases the slope and increases the zero-point of the relation. Our results suggest a significant offset of the TFR zero-point between galaxies in low- and high-density environments, regardless of the kinematics estimator used. This can be interpreted as a decrease in either stellar mass by ∼0.05 − 0.3 dex or an increase in rotation velocity by ∼0.02 − 0.06 dex for galaxies in groups, depending on the samples used for comparison. We also studied the stellar and baryon mass fractions within stellar disks and found they both increase with stellar mass, the trend being more pronounced for the stellar component alone. These fractions do not exceed 50%. We show that this evolution of the TFR is consistent either with a decrease in star formation or with a contraction of the mass distribution due to the environment. These two effects probably act together, with their relative contribution depending on the mass regime.

SITELLE Hα Imaging Spectroscopy of z ∼ 0.25 Clusters: Emission-line Galaxy Detection and Ionized Gas Offset in Abell 2390 and Abell 2465

Abstract Environmental effects are crucial to the understanding of the evolution of galaxies in dense environments, such as galaxy clusters. Using the large field of view of SITELLE, the unique imaging Fourier transform spectrograph at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, we are able to obtain 2D spectral information for a large and complete sample of cluster galaxies out to the infall region. We describe a pipeline developed to identify emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from the datacube using cross-correlation techniques. We present results based on the spatial offsets between the emission-line regions and stellar continua in ELGs from two z ∼ 0.25 galaxy clusters, Abell 2390 and A2465. We find a preference for the offsets to be pointed away from the cluster center. Combining the two clusters, there is a 3σ excess for high-velocity galaxies within the virial radius to have the offsets pointed away from the cluster center. Assuming the offset is a proxy for the velocity vector of a galaxy, as expected from ram pressure stripping, this excess indicates that ram pressure stripping occurs most effectively during the first passage of an infalling galaxy, leading to the quenching of its star formation. We also find that, outside the virial region, the continuum-normalized Hα line flux for infalling galaxies with large offsets is on average lower than those with small or no measurable offset, further supporting ram pressure as a dominant quenching mechanism during the initial infall stages.

Void Galaxies Follow a Distinct Evolutionary Path in the Environmental COntext Catalog

Abstract We measure the environmental dependence, where environment is defined by the distance to the third nearest neighbor, of multiple galaxy properties inside the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog. We focus primarily on void galaxies, which we define as the 10% of galaxies having the lowest local density. We compare the properties of void and non-void galaxies: baryonic mass, color, fractional stellar mass growth rate (FSMGR), morphology, and gas-to-stellar-mass ratio (estimated from a combination of H i data and photometric gas fractions calibrated with the REsolved Spectroscopy Of a Local VolumE survey). Our void galaxies typically have lower baryonic masses than galaxies in denser environments, and they display the properties expected of a lower mass population: they have more late types, are bluer, have a higher FSMGR, and are more gas-rich. We control for baryonic mass and investigate the extent to which void galaxies are different at fixed mass. Void galaxies are bluer, more gas-rich, and more star-forming at fixed mass than non-void galaxies, which is a possible signature of galaxy assembly bias. Furthermore, we show that these trends persist even at fixed mass and morphology, and we find that voids host a distinct population of early types that are bluer and more star-forming than the typical red and quenched early types. In addition to these empirical observational results, we also present theoretical results from mock catalogs with built-in galaxy assembly bias. We show that a simple matching of galaxy properties to (sub)halo properties, such as mass and age, can recover the observed environmental trends in ECO galaxies.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Bulge and Disk Stellar Population Properties in Cluster Galaxies

Abstract We explore stellar population properties separately in the bulge and the disk of double-component cluster galaxies, to shed light on the formation of lenticular galaxies in dense environments. We study eight low-redshift clusters from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field Galaxy Survey, using two-dimensional photometric bulge–disk decomposition in the g, r, and i bands to characterize galaxies. For 192 double-component galaxies with M * &gt; 1010 M ⊙, we estimate the color, age, and metallicity of the bulge and the disk. The analysis of the g − i colors reveals that bulges are redder than their surrounding disks, with a median offset of 0.12 ± 0.02 mag, consistent with previous results. To measure mass-weighted age and metallicity, we investigate three methods: (i) one based on galaxy stellar mass weights for the two components, (ii) one based on flux weights, and (iii) one based on radial separation. The three methods agree in finding 62% of galaxies having bulges that are 2–3 times more metal-rich than the disks. Of the remaining galaxies, 7% have bulges that are more metal-poor than the disks, while for 31%, the bulge and disk metallicities are not significantly different. We observe 23% of galaxies being characterized by bulges older and 34% by bulges younger with respect to the disks. The remaining 43% of galaxies have bulges and disks with statistically indistinguishable ages. Redder bulges tend to be more metal-rich than the disks, suggesting that the redder color in bulges is due to their enhanced metallicity relative to the disks instead of differences in stellar population age.

The Effect of Environment on AGN Activity: The Properties of Radio and Optical AGN in Void, Isolated, and Group Galaxies

Abstract The evolution of galaxies depends on their environment. In this work, active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in different environments has been studied. The fractions of radio and optical AGN in four different environments have been compared using samples of void, isolated, group member, and the brightest group galaxies. Galaxies in voids show significantly lower stellar ages, concentrations, colors, and surface mass densities, and they experience more one-on-one interactions compared to the isolated galaxies and galaxies in groups. To study pure environmental effects, the biases caused by the stellar mass and galaxy type quantified by 4000 Å break strength have been removed. While the results confirm no dependence of the optical AGN activity on environment in blue galaxies and with lower significance in green galaxies, a higher fraction of optical AGN has been observed for the massive red galaxies in voids compared to the galaxies in dense environments. This may be related to the higher amount of one-on-one interaction observed in the void galaxies, or it may reflect more fundamental differences in the host galaxies or environments of the voids. The radio-mode AGN activity increases in the dense environment for red galaxies. No changes in the radio-loud AGN fraction have been observed for the blue and green galaxies. This shows that the effect of environment on AGN activity is not significant in the presence of cold gas in galaxies. We also discuss whether the efficiency of gas accretion depends on the properties of the host galaxy.

Fundamental Plane of BOSS galaxies: correlations with galaxy properties, density field, and impact on RSD measurements

ABSTRACT Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies can be used to predict the intrinsic size of galaxies and has a number of plausible application to study cosmology and galaxy physics. We present a detailed analysis of the FP of the SDSS-III BOSS LOWZ and CMASS galaxies. For the standard FP, we find a strong redshift evolution for the mean residual and show that it is primarily driven by the redshift evolution of the surface brightness of the galaxies. After correcting for the redshift evolution, the FP residuals are strongly correlated with the galaxy properties and some observational systematics. We show that the variations in the FP between the central and satellite galaxies, which have been observed in the literature, can primarily be explained by the correlation of the FP with the galaxy luminosity. We also measure the cross-correlations of the FP residuals with the galaxy density field. The amplitude of the cross-correlations depends on the galaxy properties and environment with brighter and redder galaxies showing stronger correlation. In general, galaxies in denser environments (higher galaxy bias) show stronger correlations. We also compare FP amplitude with the amplitudes of intrinsic alignments (IA) of galaxy shapes, finding the two to be correlated. Finally, using the FP residuals, we also study the impact of IA on the constraint of growth rate using redshift-space distortions (RSD). We do not observe any significant trends in measurements of the growth rate f as function of the amplitude of FP–density correlations, resulting in null detection of the effects of IA on the RSD measurements.
