Analisis Framing Pemberitaan Kasus Korupsi Tom Lembong dalam Bingkai Media Online Antaranews.com dan Tempo.co
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Jurnal JTIK (Jurnal Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi)
  • Eric Raynaldo Handy Saputra + 1 more

This study analyzes the framing of news coverage on the alleged corruption case involving Tom Lembong related to the 2015 sugar import policy, as reported by Antaranews.com and Tempo.co. The case drew attention because it involved a political figure in opposition to the government, raising suspicions of legal politicization ahead of the 2024 elections. This research aims to examine how both media outlets framed the case. Antaranews.com and Tempo.co were chosen due to different ownership structures: Antaranews.com is state-owned under BUMN, while Tempo.co is privately and publicly owned. The study uses Robert Entman’s framing analysis model, covering four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The findings are connected to Michel Foucault’s theory of power relations. News articles were collected using the keyword “Tom Lembong” from October 29 to November 30, 2024, yielding 51 articles from Antaranews.com and 154 from Tempo.co. These were further filtered by stages of the case: suspect naming, political responses, pretrial & alleged politicization, and pretrial rejection. From this, 5 articles from Antaranews.com and 6 from Tempo.co were selected as the most representative. The results show clear differences. Antaranews.com emphasizes the legality of the Attorney General’s actions, supports the legitimacy of the legal process, and relies on official sources. Meanwhile, Tempo.co frames the case more critically, questioning the legal process and highlighting broader political narratives. These differences reflect power relations that influence media framing according to ownership.

As the country’s top leader, it is common that Prabowo has become a central figure in the public eye. Recently, one of Prabowo’s statements has sparked public discussion and is considered controversial. The statement in question is his expression of willingness to forgive corruptors, provided they return the stolen assets. Many people have linked the discourse with the image of fake heroism that has been associated with Prabowo since the beginning of his presidency. The construction of this image is influenced, in part, by the role of the media. Tempo.co and Metrotvnews.com are among the online news portals that reported on the discourse surrounding the amnesty policy for corruptors. This research employs Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model to examine how Tempo.co and Metrotvnews.com frame the discourse. The research object selected consisted of news articles on the discourse of an amnesty policy for corruptors, published between 19 and 31 December 2024 with 6 articles from Tempo.co and 5 articles of Metrotvnews.com. Tempo.co tends to citicize Prabowo’s statement and does not support the realization of the proposed policy of granting clemency corruptors. Meanwhile Metrotvnews.com presents the policy discourse more favorably, potraying it as an effective approach to recovering state assets.

An Agenda Feedback Wheel: News Corp’s Coverage of the Marcia Langton ‘Racism’ Controversy
  • Dec 31, 2025
  • Journalism and Media
  • Catherine Son + 3 more

Conservative media have been shown to exert disproportionate levels of influence over other mainstream media agendas. This study explores the outsized influence of Australia’s conservative media during the 2023 Australian Voice to Parliament referendum on other news agendas and, in turn, the impact on public and political agendas. Combining conservative advocacy, agenda-setting, and frame-building theories, this study uses content analysis of news frames included in Australian news reports about the Marcia Langton “racism” controversy. The influence of conservative media frames on other news media reporting and political and public responses to the controversy is conceptualised as a self-propelling agenda feedback wheel, fuelled by deliberate media advocacy. By having an outsized influence on the rest of the Australian media’s reporting of the racism controversy, News Corp also influenced the public and political referendum debate. These findings add new insights into how conservative media power is used to influence other media and, in turn, democracy.

Beyond algorithms: how folk theories of information homogeneity differ from academic theories across the contexts of the US and China
  • Dec 31, 2025
  • Information, Communication & Society
  • Yiyan Zhang + 1 more

ABSTRACT While previous studies have examined online homogenous information experiences as theorized by various concepts (e.g., echo chambers and filter bubbles), we know less about how the general public makes sense of these encounters; their folk theories could be very different behind the same behaviors. Meanwhile, the contextual factors that shape the configurations of folk theories remain underexamined. This study thus leveraged a comparative approach, which contrasted folk theories with formal academic theories and compared folk theories across contexts. Combining large-scale computational frame analyses of social media posts (Weibo: N = 245,244; Twitter (now X): N = 171,125) and qualitative textual analysis, our mixed-method approach identified seven folk theories. They were compared with theories extracted based on a content analysis of relevant academic papers (N = 132). The cross-context comparison shows that unlike academic studies that emphasize algorithms and platforms’ roles, laypeople primarily attribute information homogeneity to political actors (US) and interest-based groups (China). This study highlights folk theories’ contextual contingencies and suggests a comprehensive theoretical framework that explains the configurations of folk theories in the current high-choice media environment.

Good and bad memories in the construction of European identity: A frame analysis on Germany’s attachment to the European Union
  • Dec 28, 2025
  • Journal of Nationalism, Memory & Language Politics
  • Yusuf Gökhan Atak

Abstract This study examines the impact of national memory on the construction of Germany as a member state devoted to the European project and identity. More specifically, it attempts to understand, in a comparative manner, what functions “good” and “bad” memories play in Germany’s attachment to the European Union (EU). The aim of this inquiry is not only to reveal the main historical events and episodes that shape German leaders’ perceptions with regard to the EU, but also to detect the degree of differentiation between the “good” and “bad” memories in this process. In order to fulfill this task, the study focuses on the Merkel era, which covers the period from 2005 to 2021. Through inductive frame analysis, it explores the historical frames utilized by German leaders in relation to Germany’s attachment to the European project and identity. The relevant dataset covers the texts of speeches delivered by Chancellor Merkel, as well as those of foreign ministers and federal presidents who held office during Merkel’s chancellorship. In light of the findings of this textual analysis, it is emphasized that national memory is a significant element in the construction of Germany’s European identity, given the high frequency of history-related frames. Yet “good” and “bad” memories serve distinct functions, as good memories are translated into Germany’s sense of debt and gratitude, while bad memories are framed as lessons that underscore the importance of the European project and identity.

Manual and automatic paragraph-level analysis of climate change framing in academic journal editorials
  • Dec 28, 2025
  • Scientometrics
  • Nicholas Badullovich + 4 more

Abstract Framing is an extensively used research method in the context of climate change communication research. Frames are an essential part of communication by which a speaker can put boundaries on complex issues and create a tailored lens through which to communicate while remaining true to reality. Though there is a rich literature looking at frames present in a variety of media and social media content, rather little attention has been given so far to scientific editorials. We extend upon previously published research on climate change related editorials from the journals Nature and Science by extending it with new data, new coding structures, new analyses, and results on automatic classification. Specifically, we show that applying frame analysis not as regularly done on text level but on the level of paragraphs (and moving to the level of individual sentences when necessary) leads to a more nuanced account of the underlying communication strategies. Next, in addition to analysing customary issue frames, we also code the rhetorical dimensions present in the paragraphs, informed by Entman’s four frame functions. In analysing the resulting data, we find a pervasive use of the Governance and Scientific issue frames in both journals, and for the rhetorical dimension a dominance of frames that represent the Describe Problem and the Moral Judgement perspectives. Finally, as an add-on to the qualitative work, we assess the capabilities of automatic text classification methods for our three tasks of determining (i) the degree of paragraph topicality, (ii) the issue frames, and (iii) the rhetorical frames. We compare various supervised und unsupervised methods and find that a RoBERTa model achieves decent performance on the frequent classes, while the rare classes pose problems. Similarly, zero-shot learning with LLMs is not yet able to provide a reliable classification, showcasing the results close to those of an SVM baseline. At the end of the paper, we situate our approach in the quest for even more fine-grained analyses and computational models of framing.

ELECTION MEMES AS PERFORMING ARTS AESTHETIC STRATEGIES OF POLITICAL MISINFORMATION IN RAJASTHAN
  • Dec 23, 2025
  • ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts
  • Priyanka Maheshwari + 4 more

This paper research explores the concept of election memes as a new kind of performing arts that tactically constructs political meaning, emotionality, and information flow misconstructions in Rajasthan. Although memes are commonly defined as humorous digital artefacts, this paper has proposed them as micro-performances, aesthetic events, which are designed to integrate folklore signals, dramaturgical and multimodal symbolism into persuasive political stories. In this sense, election memes are participatory and not merely aesthetical commentary, mobilisation of identities and dissemination of ideological affect. The study relies on digital folklore, semiotics, and performance theory in order to trace the way in which exaggeration, parody, satire, and symbolic motifs code political misinformation. A collection of memes of the Rajasthan election was collected using prominent social media, and then a three-level analysis was performed: (i) visual/semiotic dissection, (ii) textual sentiment and framing analysis of narratives, and (iii) computational clustering of aesthetic and thematic elements. The results demonstrate that meme misinformation works with culturally-instilled aesthetics mechanisms, which include regional humour, folk, and emotionally-charged caricatures, which ensure virality and credibility. Analysis of audience reception also indicates that youth, rural electorate, and partisan audiences are consuming these memes as performances of belonging that tend to support existing prejudices and add to a digital theatre of persuasion.

‘Use these strategies to advocate for yourself at your next doctor's appointment’: a snapshot of Australian online news framing of endometriosis in 2024
  • Dec 19, 2025
  • Media International Australia
  • Hannah Adler + 1 more

This paper reports on findings from a framing analysis of 98 Australian online news reports published in 2024 about endometriosis drawn from a variety of news publications. Using an approach informed by framing theory, biocommunicability and Dan and Raupp’s systematic review of health news frames, the study includes deductive and inductive frames. The analysis reveals how in the news, endometriosis is represented as a cause of individualised pain and suffering that patient-consumers must address through self-advocacy and self-education. While articles did consider thematic framings through reporting of wider issues such as medical gaslighting in endometriosis related care and widespread diagnostic delays, these issues were discussed as regrettable yet ultimately normal consequences of individual medical practitioner failures. Further, these issues were often told through narrative stories and attached to actions everyday people can take to address them, rather than considering wider, systemic-level changes or proposed solutions that could be addressed. Along with this prevalence of narrative reporting, and while pain was foregrounded as a serious symptom, infertility caused by endometriosis was commonly reported despite existing research which highlights the detriment of colluding these two issues. These findings echo existing media research, demonstrating that when reported in news media, endometriosis remains discussed as an individual condition, focused on symptoms such as fertility, and solutions related to self-advocacy. We argue that through this there is an agentless responsibility in this news reporting of endometriosis; while systemic issues are discussed, systemic solutions remain unaddressed, and the audience is left unknowing what to do beyond individual solutions.

In the year Earl Graves, founder and publisher of Black Enterprise ( BE ), passed away, the magazine also celebrated its 50th anniversary. An analysis of 509 BE covers reveals changes in design, representation, and brand growth over time. Women have appeared more frequently in the past two decades, though they remain less likely than men to be on covers. The study employed visual framing and multimodal analysis to show how BE integrates cultural representation and symbolism. These covers serve as sources of empowerment in the business world, providing new insights into magazine cover design, visual communication, and The Black Press.

Emotional practices of anger: the case of the anti-Japan-US security treaty (Anpo) protests (1959–60)
  • Dec 17, 2025
  • Cambridge Review of International Affairs
  • Chaeyoung Yong

This article explores the emotional practice of anger within the anti-Japan-US Security Treaty protests of 1959-60 (the Anpo protests) in Japan. Why and how did protesters express anger in the anti-Japan-US security treaty protests? Existing studies on the protests have underexplored emotions and offered limited explanation about why different groups had different agendas and targets of blame. Building upon practice theory and frame analysis, I seek to offer a new account for the interplay between anger practices and social protests. This article contends that the protesters practiced their anger to signal how serious the issues were to them, to identify injustices, and to demand action. It further argues that injustice frames, especially the frames of war and democracy, played a role in justifying the protesters’ anger and mobilising collective action. This article aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the emotional aspect of the Japanese popular protests over foreign policy and contributes to theorising emotional practices in social protests.

The faces of war – the human interest frame in onet.pl and wp.pl’s materials reporting on the war in Ukraine during the first year of the conflict
  • Dec 4, 2025
  • Stosunki Międzynarodowe – International Relations
  • Marta Jas-Koziarkiewicz + 1 more

When analyzing current international relations, it is necessary to move beyond the frames of the central state, as non-state agents, including the media, may have a significant influence in this area. These factors influence political decision makers through their influence on international and national public opinion. This article presents the results of a frame analysis of how the war in Ukraine was reported on horizontal news websites in Poland, onet.pl and wp.pl, during the first year of the conflict. The goal of the present research was to define the presence and method of using the frame of human interest. When analyzing the journalistic material, we used a quantitative, but above all, a qualitative analysis of the content. The study sample included 1,200 items. According to these assumptions, the newsrooms of both news services most often employed the conflict frame, and their second most frequently employed frame was human interest. This was constructed by invoking the experiences of the units or groups. The websites’ materials containing the human interest frame saw the presence of personalization, dramatization, and emotionalization. In wp.pl’s and onet.pl’s texts containing the human interest frame and related to the war in Ukraine, we identified three categories of hero: victim, enemy, and hero. Both outlets were most frequently reported by the victims. The means of using the category of hero in press materials were similar, as were the differentiation of the categories of actors in the texts.

Heritage Diplomacy at Times of War: Media Narratives and Strategic Communication of Ukraine and the EU in the ‘Global South’
  • Dec 1, 2025
  • European Foreign Affairs Review
  • Natalia Chaban + 3 more

This article introduces the Special Section EU-Ukraine Heritage Diplomacy: Media Narratives and Strategic Communication in the ‘Global South’. The section presents outcomes of a transnational research project that explores challenges and opportunities of EU-Ukraine heritage diplomacy during the ongoing war against Ukraine. As a specific direction of cultural diplomacy, heritage diplomacy and its securitization have acquired a sense of urgency for the EU. Contributing to this novel field and arguing the importance of attentive and systematic listening by the EU to its external partners, this Special section focuses on the analysis of narratives and frames of Ukraine’s cultural and historic heritage and the EU in leading media in the selected countries of the ‘Global South’ – Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, and South Africa. Our Introductory article outlines the place of the strategic communication perspective in heritage diplomacy by the EU and Ukraine. It details the ontology that guides the methodology of our multi-country comparative study and introduces five empirical cases featured in the Special section. We conclude with our arguments about the relevance and importance of the in-depth systematic research into narratives surrounding cultural and historic heritage in international relations. In a turbulent world, the securitization of cultural and historical heritage adds another layer of complexity to the international dialogue and collaboration, including that between the EU and Ukraine.

Conceptualising euro-optimism via frames analysis: case study of Slovenia
  • Nov 29, 2025
  • Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research
  • Jure Požgan + 2 more

This article contributes to the conceptualization of states' Euro-optimism by examining the extent to which analytical frames used for Euroscepticism can be applied to the analysis of states' Euro-optimistic attitudes. Building on Pirro and van Kessel's (2018) frame analysis and Baboš and Világi's (2019) continuum model of political parties' attitudes towards European integration applied to state-level positions, we propose a conceptual model incorporating two new elements: frame compatibility and degree of Euro-optimism. The model is tested through a longitudinal case study of Slovenia's traditionally positive foreign policy stance towards European integration, with emphasis on the period between 2020 and 2022, when the Euro-optimist stance was contested. Findings reveal that prior to 2020, Slovenia's Euro-optimist stance was constructed through all four frames – socio-economic, cultural, legitimacy, and sovereignty – and was compatible both within and between frames. During 2020–2022, however, while all four frames were also present, Euro-optimism persisted only in the socio-economic and cultural frames, whereas the legitimacy and sovereignty frames exhibited partial deconstruction and incompatibility between the frames. The article shows that while for Euroscepticism, compatibility between the discursive frames might not play a significant role, for a state's Euro-optimistic stance, compatibility within and between the frames is essential.

Education as a Field of Contention: Feminist and Anti-gender Struggles over Democracy
  • Nov 29, 2025
  • Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State & Society
  • Giada Bonu Rosenkranz + 1 more

Abstract This article examines education as a contentious field where feminist movements and anti-gender actors in Italy clash over the role of sexuality education. Feminists advocate for educational reforms to dismantle gender stereotypes and promote equality, framing education as a cornerstone of democratic principles and human rights. Conversely, anti-gender actors portray such initiatives as an imposition of “gender ideology,” threatening traditional family structures and moral values. Drawing on Critical Frame Analysis, this study analyzes the competing narratives employed by feminist and anti-gender actors, highlighting their divergent views on the role of state intervention, the relationship between democracy and family, and the interpretation of gender. Overall, the article argues about competing discourses on sexuality education as crucial factors that reshape democratic governance, and that sexuality education embeds larger cultural and social implications which can either enhance or undermine democracy.

Potential for recycling and reusing transformer cores made of silicon steel sheets
  • Nov 28, 2025
  • Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers
  • Pi-Chang Chen + 3 more

ABSTRACT The 3 R approach (reduce, reuse, and recycle) is recognized as a crucial strategy for achieving sustainable development. This study examines the feasibility of using recycled silicon steel sheets in new transformer cores by evaluating their magnetic and mechanical properties. No prior research has provided empirical data on the recyclability of aged silicon steel sheets used in real-world transformers. Sheets used in transformers for 10 or 20 years were evaluated through tensile testing, iron loss measurement, and Epstein frame analysis. Their mechanical and magnetic properties remained relatively stable over time and were significantly improved through annealing. Composition analysis was performed for each category of silicon steel sheet specimens. Results showed that the mass percentages of all elements remained stable over time, except for silicon, which slightly decreased with prolonged use. The results of metallographic microscopy indicated that the prevalence of surface defects on the silicon steel sheets increased with usage duration, which might have been attributable to the internal and external forces caused by an increase in the iron loss of these sheets.
