Automatic detection of fetal movement by Doppler ultrasound during non-stress testing

A new external fetal monitor, using a defocused, wide-area ultrasound transducer has been devised in order to obtain a more accurate representation of fetal movement during antepartum non-stress testing. The fetal activity Doppler signal is easily distinguished from the fetal heart Doppler and provides an automatic record of fetal movement which is objective and reproducible. In several clinical tests, this new monitor was found to be more sensitive and reliable than either reports of fetal movement from the mother or from a physician palpating the abdomen. This method of automatic detection of fetal activity can improve the accuracy of the non-stress test by providing an additional objective criteria.

Measurement of fetal movements by moving-coil transducer.

A transducer for the detection of fetal movements is described. The transducer is based on a coil moving in a magnetic field. It produces a signal as a result of fetal movements which create changes on the matemal anterior abdomen. The transducer is not affected by slow movements, maternal respiration, and uterine contractions. The sensitivity of the transducer in comparison with other means of fetal movement assessment is discussed.

Detection of fetal heart movement in first trimester of pregnancy using pulsed ultrasound.

A method is reported by which the presence or absence of fetal heart movement may be reliably detected by an abdominal approach from the 48th day of pregnancy onwards (menstrual age). The technique involves the use of commercially available diagnostic sonar apparatus using two display and time position modes in combination.A series of 106 examinations on 56 patients in early pregnancy is presented in which there were no false results.

Pregnancy Diagnosis in Dairy Goats Using Ultrasonic Doppler Instruments

Accurate diagnosis of pregnancy in does from one to 104 days before kidding was made by using an ultrasonic Doppler technique. Detection of pregnancy 106 days and more before kidding was not possible with external transducers. Prediction of multiple births has not been successful to date. The instruments are portable and can be used anywhere, since they employ are chargeable battery pack as a source of power. Instruments with a frequency of 5MHz seem to be superior for early detection of pregnancy, whereas those with a frequency of 2.25MHz may be superior for the detection of fetal heart movement in fetuses near term.
