Photoexcitation Dynamics of 4-Aminopthalimide in Solution Investigated Using Femtosecond Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions are crucial in photoresponsive materials and fluorescent markers. The fluorescent compound 4-aminophthalimide (4-AP) has been reported to exhibit solvent-assisted ESIPT in protic solvents, such as methanol, wherein the solvent interacts with 4-AP to form a six-membered hydrogen-bonded ring that is strengthened upon excitation. Although the controversial observation of ESIPT in 4-AP has been extensively studied, the molecular mechanism has yet to be fully explored. In this study, femtosecond infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the dynamics of 4-AP in methanol and acetonitrile after excitation at 350 and 300 nm, which promoted 4-AP to the S1 and S2 states, respectively. The excited 4-AP in the S1 state relaxed to the ground state, while 4-AP in the S2 state relaxed via the S1 state without the occurrence of ESIPT. The enol form of 4-AP (Enol 4-AP) in the S1 state was calculated to be ~10 kcal/mol higher in energy than the keto form in the S1 state, indicating that keto-to-enol tautomerization was endergonic, ultimately resulting in no observable ESIPT for 4-AP in the S1 state. Upon the excitation of 4-AP to the S2 state, the transition to Enol-4-AP in the S1 state was found to be exergonic; however, ESIPT must compete with an internal conversion from the S2 to the S1 state. The internal S2 → S1 conversion was significantly faster than the solvent-assisted ESIPT, resulting in a negligible ESIPT for the 4-AP excited to the S2 state. The detailed excitation dynamics of 4-AP clearly reveal the molecular mechanism underlying its negligible ESIPT, despite the fact that it forms a favorable structure for solvent-assisted ESIPT.

Ultrafast Water H-Bond Rearrangement in a Metal–Organic Framework Probed by Femtosecond Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy

We investigated the water H-bond network and its dynamics in Ni2Cl2BTDD, a prototypical MOF for atmospheric water harvesting, using linear and ultrafast IR spectroscopy. Utilizing isotopic labeling and infrared spectroscopy, we found that water forms an extensive H-bonding network in Ni2Cl2BTDD. Further investigation with ultrafast spectroscopy revealed that water can reorient in a confined cone up to ∼50° within 1.3 ps. This large angle reorientation indicates H-bond rearrangement, similar to bulk water. Thus, although the water H-bond network is confined in Ni2Cl2BTDD, different from other confined systems, H-bond rearrangement is not hindered. The picosecond H-bond rearrangement in Ni2Cl2BTDD corroborates its reversibility with minimal hysteresis in water sorption.

Investigating the Photodissociation Dynamics of CF2BrCF2I in CCl4 through Femtosecond Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy

The photodissociation dynamics of CF2BrCF2I in CCl4 at 280 ± 2 K were investigated by probing the C-F stretching mode from 300 fs to 10 μs after excitation at 267 nm using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. The excitation led to the dissociation of I or Br atoms within 300 fs, producing the CF2BrCF2 or CF2ICF2 radicals, respectively. All nascent CF2ICF2 underwent further dissociation of I, producing CF2CF2 with a time constant of 56 ± 5 ns. All nascent g-CF2BrCF2 isomerized into the more stable a-CF2BrCF2 with a time constant of 47 ± 5 ps. Furthermore, a-CF2BrCF2 underwent a bimolecular reaction with either itself (producing CF2BrCF2Br and CF2CF2) or Br in the CCl4 solution (producing CF2BrCF2Br) at a diffusion-limited rate. The secondary dissociation of Br from a-CF2BrCF2 was significantly slow to compete with the bimolecular reactions. Overall, approximately half of the excited CF2BrCF2I at 267 nm produced CF2BrCF2Br, whereas the other half produced CF2CF2. The excess energies in the nascent radicals were thermalized much faster than the secondary dissociation of I from CF2ICF2 and the observed bimolecular reactions, implying that the secondary reactions proceeded under thermal conditions. This study further demonstrates that structure-sensitive time-resolved infrared spectroscopy can be used to study various reaction dynamics in solution in real time.

Photophysical properties of cis-Mo2 quadruply bonded complexes and observation of photoinduced electron transfer to titanium dioxide.

The compounds cis-Mo2(DAniF)2(L)2 have been prepared, where DAniF = (N,N')-p-dianisyl formamidinate and L = thienyl-2-carboxylate (Th), 2,2'-bithienyl-5-carboxylate (BTh), and 2,2':5',5″-terthienyl-5-carboxylate (TTh). The compounds have been characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and emission, differential pulse voltammetry, and time-resolved transient absorption and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. An X-ray crystal structure was obtained for the thienyl complex. The related salt [(n)Bu4N]2[Mo2(DAniF)2(TTh-CO2)2], where TTh-CO2 = 2,2':5',2″-terthienyl-5,5″-dicarboxylate, has also been prepared and employed in the attachment of the complex to TiO2 nanoparticles. The latter have been characterized by ground-state Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and femtosecond time-resolved IR spectroscopy. The time-resolved data provide evidence for sub-picosecond charge injection from the Mo2 center to the semiconducting oxide particle.

Direct probing of photoinduced electron transfer in a self-assembled biomimetic [2Fe2S]-hydrogenase complex using ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy.

A pyridyl-functionalized diiron dithiolate complex, [μ-(4-pyCH2-NMI-S2)Fe2(CO)6] (3, py = pyridine (ligand), NMI = naphthalene monoimide) was synthesized and fully characterized. In the presence of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP), a self-assembled 3·ZnTPP complex was readily formed in CH2Cl2 by the coordination of the pyridyl nitrogen to the porphyrin zinc center. Ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from excited ZnTPP to complex 3 in the supramolecular assembly was observed in real time by monitoring the ν(C≡O) and ν(C═O)NMI spectral changes with femtosecond time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy. We have confirmed that photoinduced charge separation produced the monoreduced species by comparing the time-resolved IR spectra with the conventional IR spectra of 3(•-) generated by reversible electrochemical reduction. The lifetimes for the charge separation and charge recombination processes were found to be τCS = 40 ± 3 ps and τCR = 205 ± 14 ps, respectively. The charge recombination is much slower than that in an analogous covalent complex, demonstrating the potential of a supramolecular approach to extend the lifetime of the charge-separated state in photocatalytic complexes. The observed vibrational frequency shifts provide a very sensitive probe of the delocalization of the electron-spin density over the different parts of the Fe2S2 complex. The TR and spectro-electrochemical IR spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, and density functional theory calculations all show that the spin density in 3(•-) is delocalized over the diiron core and the NMI bridge. This delocalization explains why the complex exhibits low catalytic dihydrogen production even though it features a very efficient photoinduced electron transfer. The ultrafast porphyrin-to-NMI-S2-Fe2(CO)6 photoinduced electron transfer is the first reported example of a supramolecular Fe2S2-hydrogenase model studied by femtosecond TRIR spectroscopy. Our results show that TRIR spectroscopy is a powerful tool to investigate photoinduced electron transfer in potential dihydrogen-producing catalytic complexes, and that way to optimize their performance by rational approaches.

Excited-State Dynamics of 8′-Apo-β-caroten-8′-al and 7′,7′-Dicyano-7′-apo-β-carotene Studied by Femtosecond Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy

We present infrared transient absorption measurements of the substituted apocarotenoids 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al (I) and 7',7'-dicyano-7'-apo-beta-carotene (II) in the S(1) excited states by one-photon excitation (1PE) and two-photon excitation (2PE). 1PE populates the higher S(2) state, which converts to the S(1) state via rapid internal conversion, and 2PE populates the S(1) state directly. The 1PE-prepared population returns to the ground state on a approximately 19 ps time scale in I and a approximately 2.0 ps time scale in II. Distinct vibrational spectra and dynamics are observed from the 2PE-prepared S(1) state for both I and II: the symmetric C=C stretching vibration around 1500 cm(-1) in the S(1) state is several-fold increased in strength over other C=C stretching modes compared to the 1PE case, and long-lived absorptions are observed even after all the excited-state populations have decayed. The lifetimes of the S(1) state prepared by 2PE are slightly shorter (approximately 17 ps for I and approximately 1.7 ps for II) than the 1PE values. It is proposed that 1PE and 2PE lead to the population of different conformational minima of the S(1) potential surface. These two minima do not communicate on the time scale of the S(1) lifetime and have different relaxation channels on the ground-state surface.

Photoinduced Bimolecular Electron Transfer Investigated by Femtosecond Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy

Ultrafast infrared transient absorption spectroscopy is used to study the photoinduced bimolecular electron transfer reaction between perylene in the first singlet excited state and 1,4-dicyanobenzene in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Following vibrational marker modes on both donor and acceptor sides in real time provides direct insight into the structural dynamics during the reaction. A band narrowing on a time scale of a few tens of picoseconds observed on the antisymmetric CN stretching vibration of the dicyanobenzene radical anion indicates that a substantial part of the excess energy is channeled into vibrational modes of the product, despite the fact that the reaction is weakly exergonic. An additional narrowing of the same band on a time scale of several hundreds of picoseconds observed in acetonitrile only is interpreted as a signature of the dissociation of the geminate ion pairs into free ions.
