This report demonstrates the feasibility of FeAI matrix / Al_2O_3 dispersion composite coatings on austenitic stainless steel by pack cementation process to form a hard and wear-resistant coating. The microstructural and sliding wear behavior of the coatings have also been investigated. It has been found that the uniform coatings form on austenitic stainless steel by pack cementation using the coating powders of Al, Cr, NH_4Cl and Al_2O_3. The tribological performance of these coatings was evaluated under reciprocating sliding wear tests against a SUJ2 ball. It is shown that the FeAl matrix / Al_2O_3 dispersion composite coating provides significant improvement in the substrate load bearing capacity.
