The short life of a race drug

The headlines back in June, 2005, read “FDA approves a heart drug for African Americans”. The decision that gave the company NitroMed approval for its drug BiDil exclusively to a “racial group” represented a milestone in US drug policy. The decision ignited a debate that polarised the African American community, confounded proponents of personalised medicine, and dismayed groups opposed to reinscribing racial categories into science. Ever since Ashley Montagu published Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race in 1964, scientists have reached a broad consensus that “race” applied to human populations has no standing in science.

An Interview with Ashley Montagu

Introduction: Ashley Montagu, born June 28, I905, in London, England, and now in his ninth decade, is preparing a new edition, the sixth, of Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race [I942], as well as new editions of Elephant Man [I97Ia] and Race and IQ [I975a] and several new papers. He is among the few today who have contributed significantly to the thought, research, and ethical folkways of several disciplines and professions. Early in his career as a craniologist he wrote a i80-page paper on the pterion [I9331, the area of the articulation of the sphenoid and parietal bones. As Lyons (n.d.) has said, It is very difficult to summarize the work of someone who has contributed so much to so many fields. The stern craniologist is also a raconteur, a historian of science, a cultural anthropologist, a popular writer, and a contributor to belles lettres. Among anthropologists he is the iconoclast par excellence in a discipline whose members take pride in their iconoclasm. He is best-known for challenging racism and the race concept beginning early in the I940S when most scientists, including anthropologists, were conceptualizing races typologically. But long before that, in I925 at the age of 2o, he published his first criticism of racism in Vincula, the journal of the University of London Student Union. After his studies at the University of London he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University in I937. His thesis committee and advisers were Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict. Thus Montagu was a student at University College London in the I920S and Columbia University in the I930S when they were two of the paradigmatic centers from which the discipline of anthropology would expand and flourish. In his academic career he was research associate at the British Museum of Natural History I926-27; curator of physical anthropology at the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in London I929-30; assistant professor of anatomy, New York University, I93I-38; associate professor of anatomy, Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, Philadelphia, I938-49; lecturer, New School for Social Research, I93I-59; drafter of the UNESCO Committee's StateAshley Montagu at 74.

Man's Most Dangerous Myth

THE author's thesis is that experience rather than inborn traits determines standards of social conduct, that most so-called lower-grade human types would reach high standards in this respect if given opportunities, that we must not assume standards other than our own to be necessarily inferior but must allow that adaptations in diverse environments give rise to different standards, and that outbreeding promotes vigour. He therefore condemns racial discrimination, especially in the U.S.A., and urges a policy of social amelioration and education, looking to the lowering of racial barriers and to implementing the first principle of the American Declaration of Independence. Race discrimination has, in any event, failed to prevent widespread mixture. He spes the human individual as the developed result of a bundle of genes of many origins, the bundle re-sorting itself in the development of every child. He might perhaps have gone further in this direction by acknowledging that genes are hypothetical, even though the gene hypothesis has more in it than the race hypothesis.
