Perspectives and Challenges of Women Political Participation in India: A Study of Lok Sabha Elections from 1952 to 2024

Abstract: The present study examines the crucial role women play in Indian politics and their efforts that promote peace. The study explores the various facets of women's political participation, looking at their roles in grassroots politics as well as their participation in governance organisations. In order to comprehend the particular perspectives and challenges experienced by women in this situation, the study begins with a historical summary of the political participation of women in India. By tracing historical trends and analysing data from Lok Sabha elections spanning from 1952 to 2024, the study elucidates the challenges and opportunities encountered by women in Indian politics. This covers social conventions, lack of access to education and resources, and the social structure of the country. The paper also looks at how legislative and policy frameworks can increase women's political engagement, analysing the advantages and disadvantages of such initiatives. Additionally, the study intends to offer insightful information on Lok Sabha representation and their political equality and governmental initiatives for equal opportunity.

Mapping of Women’s Representation in Corporate Governance: A Bibliometric Review Analysis

The scholarly literature on gender diversity on corporate boards is examined through a bibliometric examination of women’s representation in corporate governance (CG). This research reviews pertinent literature, concentrating on works that investigate different facets of women’s involvement, functions and effects in CG frameworks worldwide. In order to assess trends, major topics and the effects of gender diversity on corporate performance and governance structures, this study examines 390 publications from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. To find trends in publication production, authorship patterns and citation impact over a certain time period, the analysis makes use of R-Studio, Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools. The findings show that the topic is receiving more attention, and contributions are coming from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Despite their small presence in the area, the analysis revealed a large quantity of research on women’s involvement in CG. The research consistently shows that gender diversity and economic performance are positively correlated. It also highlights growing conversations about gender equity in corporate leadership and provides insight into future research directions that aim to advance greater equality and inclusivity in CG frameworks and sustainability in contemporary business environments.

Narratives of empowerment: Through the lens of Khatwa craftswomen of Bihar

Women’s empowerment is a complex concept entailing many internal and external factors. This research article explores the role of Khatwa appliqué, a traditional textile craft predominantly practised by women, in driving social and economic empowerment among craftswomen in Bihar, India. The methodology involves interviewing the accomplished craftswomen and developing individual case studies. The research examines the narratives of these master artisans, with a keen focus on comprehending how engagement in Khatwa appliqué has been instrumental in their empowerment journey. It also delves into the sources of inspiration, techniques and materials employed in this historically utilitarian craft – Khatwa appliqué. Our findings indicate that the Khatwa craft may have played a substantial role in advancing the socio-economic empowerment of craftswomen. The craft seems to have contributed significantly to improving their financial independence, increasing their mobility, heightening their levels of awareness and cultivating their self-confidence. Together, these outcomes have resulted in an overall enhancement of their socio-economic status, resulting in a heightened level of empowerment. The research findings contribute to the limited but growing literature on the role of crafts on several facets of women’s empowerment in Bihar.

Causal Attributions of Low Sexual Desire in Women Partnered with Men.

Low sexual desire in women partnered with men has been the subject of controversy and research over the past decades, including both as construct and diagnosis. Despite discussion surrounding the causes of low desire, there is a gap in research about how women themselves understand the causes of their low desire and the potential consequences of these causal attributions. In the current study, we investigated this by asking 130 women who had low desire and were partnered with men about their attributions for low desire. Through content analysis, we identified five attribution categories: psychological/individual, relational, biological, sociocultural, and/or sexual orientation/identity/status. Many participants chose more than one category, indicating a multifaceted nature of women's causes of low desire. We then quantitatively assessed women's feelings of responsibility for, and emotions surrounding, their low desire. Our findings indicate that the majority-but not all-of women have negative feelings about their low desire. However, the specific emotions they experience are related to their attribution patterns. This underscores the significance of investigating various facets of women's attributions regarding low desire in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their emotional experiences and desire overall.

Exploring the Experiences of Regional and Rural Revictimized Women in a Group Empowerment Program

ABSTRACT Sexual revictimization can have a negative impact on many facets of women’s wellbeing, yet limited evidence exists regarding specific interventions that support healing and the reduction of further revictimization. This paper will explore regional and rural women’s experience of a group-based empowerment program, the Shark Cage program, in Victoria, Australia. The “Shark Cage” program aims to address revictimization by empowering women and girls to build personal boundaries and assertiveness within the context of gender equality and human rights. Data were collected via participant observations across the 8-week program, in combination with semi-structured interviews with participants (N = 11) pre and post intervention. All participants had access to therapeutic support outside of the program. Findings indicate that the program fostered connections among women with shared experiences of sexual revictimization, reducing feelings of isolation. Participants detailed the benefit of developing and practicing skills in reducing revictimization, such as assertiveness and boundary setting. Program learning and recovery was embedded within a network of embodied emotions, social connections, cultural norms and place-based relations that influenced how participants recovery could be understood, processed and addressed.

Unfurling the Idyllic Social Scenarios: A Comparative Study of the Selected Works of Elizabeth Barret Browing and Nimah Nawwab

This paper analyzes the different social scenarios envisioned and portrayed in the works of two great poets, Elizabeth Barret Browning, and Nimah Nawwab. Significantly, the main aim is to determine how both poets proved to be the pioneers who unfurled the idyllic scenarios in their spectacular eras. Consequently, not only were they recognized as trailblazers in each of their respective historical times. Further, also dynamically participated, witnessed, and reinvigorated the various facets of women’s empowerment, the development of the youth, and the shifting dynamics of gender roles. Moreover, the paper employs the new historical approach to demonstrate how their poems built bridges to connect history with their vision of a progressive society. Furthermore, selected excerpts from Aurora Leigh (1856), Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s epic novel, and selected poems from The Unfurling (2004) by Nimah Nawwab are analyzed by applying this approach. Incidentally, the paper emerged from the primary research question of comparing the prevalent themes and perspectives in these works in tandem with the biographical, societal, historical, political, and cultural backdrops. Therefore, the paper concludes by unveiling the objectives and outlooks of the two poets, which are embedded in history, making their poems alive with those tenets, principles, and dreams that are acknowledged as the hallmarks so intrinsic for fostering the values of the societies in the Victorian era and postmodern Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the paper thus attempts the comparison of two poets separated by chronology, circumstances, and social norms to come together in envisioning a highly progressive society as displayed in their works.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH TECHNOLOGY: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF DIGITALIZATION ON DECISION-MAKING IN ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN

Women's Empowerment is a comprehensive and multidimensional idea. It is concerned with the economic, social, political, and other aspects of life. Because it is all-encompassing, it implies that all aspects of life must be empowered. Empowerment with regard to all dimensions of life apparently to be initiated simultaneously. Technological improvements have drastically shaken the status quo of several facets of women's lives in urban areas as compared to rural ones in the last decade in Pakistan.This research examines the influence of contemporary technology on women's decision-making Islamabad utilizing primary data inferred through quantitative methodology. The chances and challenges that women in the post-technological period encountered while making decisions were also noted in this study. According to this study, women feel more empowered to use technology to make decisions about certain issues they face as well as other issues. The study focuses on women's empowerment in Access to information, Financial management and Social communication decision-making. For immediate benefits, the study suggests that women in rural regions who have easy access to technology be made more aware of it. The study also recommends that the government support digital media, low-income training, ICT workshops, cultural inequality, infrastructure spending, and data protection laws. This will help close the gender equality gap and improve Pakistan's overall economic health as half of the population currently has little influence over decision-making. “Linton had a Very Restless Night”: Sleeplessness in the Sickroom, 1783

ABSTRACT On 11 May 1783, Lady Mary Traquair “went to Bed for ye first night, had not been in Bed for 12 nights before,” because she had been nursing her son, Charles, Lord Linton, who was inoculated against smallpox in late April. In this anxious period, Lady Traquair quarrelled with the inoculator; adapted prescribed drug regimens; lost the little trust she had in the nursemaid; and tracked Linton’s sleep meticulously. Lady Traquair paid attention to all of the Galenic six non-naturals, but she became focussed on Linton’s sleep, which was badly disturbed. Her anxiety was heightened by mistrust of some of the attendants hired to care for her son. Even after his recovery, her habit of monitoring his sleep remained as shorthand for Linton’s wellbeing. While Linton’s illness did worry his mother, her record of his overnight care illuminates other facets of women’s experiences of illness and nursing. Examining how Lady Traquair intervened in Linton’s sleep illuminates her relationships with his attendants, her medical judgement, and the role she gave herself as a dutiful, unsentimental, but caring mother.

Education, Empowerment and Eros: Fakir Mohan Senapati’s “Rebati”

Fakir Mohan Senapati’s “Rebati”, considered to be the first short story written in Odia, has now been hailed as a classic for the manner it dramatizes burning social issues that the Odia society confronted at the end of the nineteenth century, majorly women’s education, in a seemingly simple yet powerful narrative. Senapati, in the story, has immortalized the character of Rebati, the ten-year-old girl from nineteenth century rural Odisha, so as to express his views regarding various facets of women’s education and its relation to empowerment in a style that has historically appealed readers of all age groups. The paper attempts to highlight Fakir Mohan’s ideological ambivalence towards women’s education as well as heterosexual love as represented in the story.

From Sickle to Pen

This article discusses the relationship between women’s education and their everyday mobility in the rural areas of Punjab, Pakistan. Based on an ethnographic case study from a village in Southern Punjab, information from semi-structured interviews and observations is used to demonstrate an enhanced access to education has altered women’s everyday mobility trends. However, questions regarding women’s empowerment remain unresolved. Although some rural women have always been engaged in agricultural activities, there have been limitations on their mobility due to cultural sensitivities. I conclude the nature of social and socio-spatial relationships is being negotiated in some cultural contexts of rural Punjab through the changing facets of women’s mobility associated with modern education.

Working Together to Address Women's Health in Research and Drug Development: Summary of the 2017 Women's Health Congress Preconference Symposium.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in clinical research, requiring physicians to extrapolate medical recommendations for women from clinical research done in cohorts consisting predominantly of male participants. While government-funded clinical research has achieved gender parity in phase-3 clinical trials across many biomedical disciplines, improvements are still needed in several facets of women's health research, such as the inclusion of women in early-phase clinical trials, the inclusion of pregnant women and women with physical and intellectual disabilities, the consideration of sex as a biological variable in preclinical research, and the analysis and reporting of sex and gender differences across the full biomedical research continuum. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research on Women's Health and the Office of Women's Health of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cosponsored a preconference symposium at the 25th Annual Women's Health Congress, held in Arlington, VA in April, 2017, to highlight gains made and remaining needs regarding the representation of women in clinical research, to introduce innovative procedures and technologies, and to outline revised policy for future studies. Six speakers presented information on a range of subjects related to the representation of women in clinical research and federal initiatives to advance precision medicine. Topics included the following: the return on investment from the NIH-funded Women's Health Initiative; progress in including women in clinical trials for FDA-approved drugs and products; the importance of clinical trials in pregnant women; FDA initiatives to report drug safety during pregnancy; the NIH-funded All of Us Research Program; and efforts to enhance FDA transparency and communications, including the introduction of Drug Trials Snapshots. This article summarizes the major points of the presentations and the discussions that followed.

Revisiting Forms of Representation by Critically Examining Men

Research on gender and politics has made use of Pitkin's (1967) distinction between descriptive, substantive, and symbolic representation to conceptualize and understand the different facets of women's underrepresentation and misrepresentation. The corresponding overrepresentation of men has seldom been explicitly recognized in this literature. We explore what the critical study of men and masculinities could contribute to the study of different forms of representation. Researching the descriptive overrepresentation of men implies recognizing male dominance and turning our attention from the factors that constrain women from entering politics to the factors that enable and reproduce men's presence. Researching the substantive representation of men also implies investigating how men represent men and identifying whether hegemonic masculinities privilege the representation of some men while neglecting others. Finally, a study of the symbolic representation of men implies identifying and describing the masculine signals and symbols that permeate political life but remain largely invisible because they constitute the political norm. Naming them as “masculine” will facilitate a gendered analysis of political institutions, practices, and discourses that are seldom questioned. We also consider the symbolic representation of men who do not conform to hegemonic masculine ideals and are not represented descriptively.

NO COUNTRY FOR WOMEN: AN APPRAISAL OF MUNSHI PREMCHAND’S SEVASADAN AND NIRMALA

Despite all the scientific and technological advancements, we survive in such a society where the needle of the watch decides the character and morality of a female. The paper attempts to vouchsafe the phases as well as the faces of a wretched woman’s entity through the novels Sevasadan and Nirmala by Munshi Premchand. The novels can be looked at not as an individual story but a piece of story expounding the extreme sorry state of multitudes of women. A comparative exegesis of two novels which represent the two facets of women opens an avenue to closely look at the tragic issues of dowry system, mismatched marriage, prostitution and its after-effects. The intended study affirms the fact that both the heroines of the concerned novels are driven to their ordained plight due to the compulsions of the society and not out of individual choice.

Female health workers: lifestyle, work, and psychiatric disorders

The relationships were studied between daily life, work, and mental disorders in female health workers from the Mexican Health Insurance Institute. The study sample (n = 170) included female physicians, nurses, laboratory workers, and medical assistants. Primary data were obtained through an interview which had been previously validated in a population of workers in Mexico. Relationships were found between mental disorders and all facets of women's lives. In relation to the domestic environment, women with higher rates of mental disorders were those who were mothers, had more children, did not have household help, and had husbands or partners. Prevalence of mental disorders in relation to paid work was associated with the length of the workday, absenteeism, and lack of job content. Skills development, job satisfaction, and creativity had a "protective" or preventive effect against mental disorders and fatigue. The main risks and conditions that functioned as stressors were heat, noise, physical effort, awkward positions, and intense, repetitive work.

Most of the recent surge in attention to women's health has focused on our breasts and genitalia. But in fact, most of health care is a "woman thing." Women account for about two thirds of adult outpatient visits, inpatient stays, home care episodes, and nursing home residents. Women play an even larger role in providing care. Seventy-eight percent of health care workers are female, as are 75% of the 7 million people who provide unpaid care at home for disabled family members and friends. Of these unpaid caregivers, 80% devote more than 28 hours per week to the task. Modern conferences on alcoholism receive research papers and stimulate multidisciplinary discussion, but this is not new, similar events took place 100 years ago. The published proceedings of Chester's conference of 1895 are reviewed and compared with recent conferences. Subjects then included alcohol's effect on the foetus, particular facets of women's drinking and increased availability in grocer's shops, the young and evaluation of educational programmes, alcohol in the workplace, long term control studies on alcoholics, laboratory studies on reaction time, attitude of the popular press, effects of restrictions in outlets and hours and lessons to be learnt from such in Scotland, and political and legislative remedies including evidence from Scandinavia. A full knowledge of earlier research and experience may modify current thinking and prevent simple repetition of previous endeavour.
